Today's notes: First "official" day of marathon training! Today's assignment (per my aunt/trainer) was:
2 mile warm up @ 10:30
6x400m @ 8:54
1 mile CD @ 10:30
I ended up running a little short and a little slow. My average paces for warm up and cool down were pretty much right on. Paces for intervals and rests in between were off. I think that this has to do with my timing hitting the lap button each time around. I wasn't very consistent at getting it exactly right, and there was always some lag for the TM speeding up/slowing down. Other than that, a good run.
After running came core work:
50x crunches
40x mountain climbers
30x side crunches
20x in and outs
30x side crunches
40x mountain climbers
50x crunches
I didn't really ever feel the burn doing the exercises, but my abs were definitely feeling dead after the second set of crunches. All in all, it felt really good, and I'm clad I'm adding back in more core work. Hip felt pretty darn good, it only started to ache some 20 minutes later when I was sitting down driving...Moving doesn't bother it, sitting still does.2 -

11 miles this week for a total of 38 miles for the month4
-
Took a rest day yesterday, setup my new Garmin Fenix 3 HR.
Looking at my ticker, I'm 10 miles away from my goal for the month with 20 of 30 miles. Not sure I can make it.
Every time I added, I put in round numbers from each run. Just went back to my app and added up in hundredths... got 26.73. I must have forgotten to log something (actually, I know there was 1 Add where I wasn't sure it had saved) because I don't think that is all from just rounding. Anyway, I'm going to update my ticker next time I get to my home computer. I now definitely think 30 miles is achievable.0 -

So a little more explanation on the football game we had. I have 7 cousins who are all grown up and are married and have families of their own. Instead of trying to figure out who is doing what on Thanksgiving, my Aunt and Uncle basically said, everyone can do whatever they like on Thanksgiving, but the Saturday afterwards we all have Thanksgiving dinner together. As part of the tradition there is a football game that involves all the male cousins and some of the children from all the family. Ben and Rob are always the 2 team captains and pick teams at the last minute based upon who has elected to play. Add to this, the men love this one Thanksgiving dish, cheese covered brussels sprouts (which I am not a big fan of). So they called this annual football game the Brussels Sprouts Bowl. The trophy is this big pot (which exchanges hands between Ben and Rob depending on who wins that year). And the winning team writes all of their names on the pot for that year. So it's actually a big deal. I played in the very first game back 5 years ago and my name is on there, and I played this year (but was on the losing team). I should have gotten a picture of the pot.
They have waist flags, endzone pylons, and they actually paint the black borders and mark first downs. And they keep time (2 30 minute halves). So this is a big deal as some of you pointed out from the picture. It is a lot of fun.

I must be a runner...I've been consulting Dr. Google too much today. I think I might have Bursitis or an IT Band issue. When I do IT Band and Hip stretches, I can feel than I'm really Stiff. Going to ice my hip/IT band after work today. Waiting to hear if the Sports Medicine docs have any openings. Thee's only like 5 in the area, and they aren't always within easy driving distance.
Good news is that there's no pain when running, I only feel anything when I'm sitting down or, occasionally, when I'm walking.0 -

Only 5?! For me, there is 1 advertising "sports medicine" about 25 miles away... a chiropractor that includes this not as a unique specialty, but as just one of his areas of practice. There are 2 orthopedic doctors that visit on occasion from larger cities. I would think they could qualify under sports medicine, though probably deal more with aging issues. Rural areas just don't have those services. There are plenty in the nearest city around 80-90 miles away, though.0 -

The area is the size of Connecticut.... arrowhead region of MN over to ND..... Luckily I work near where some of them practice when they are in town. Problem is that it's a smaller clinic here, so there really is only a sports medicine doc within 50 miles like 1-2 days a week.

I realize CT isn't square, but just to make the math simple. CT = 5,543 square miles (Google) Square Root of 5,543 = 74.45 If you are in the center of such an area, then 74.45 / 2 = 37.23 miles to get to the edge So it could be a bit bigger than the size of CT, more or less. In either case, it sounds like we are in similar circumstances. The rural midwest just doesn't have that same access. I'm guessing that dr. probably comes in from a larger city like the twin cities, Fargo, Grand Forks, or Duluth? In my case, I believe the orthopedic drs. come from Omaha. My endocrinologist comes in once per month from St. Joseph, MO and is the only one here. I notice a lot of people don't want to travel very far, but on weekends I'll visit Omaha or Kansas City or somewhere else for various activities. I don't have time to do that very many weekdays (and then only at night after work), but this is the benefit to having a car. Because of dr. hours, though, that means taking a half day at least off from work to visit a dr. in the city.0 -
@7lenny7 That Donut Day run sounds awesome, but I'm already registered for another 5k that morning. My family is doing the Jingle Bear 5k in White Bear Lake. Congrats on your running purchases this week! Please let me know how you like your Vivosmart HR; I'm thinking about upgrading to one from my Fitbit Charge HR.
I've been a bit MIA lately. I had a horrific migraine on Wednesday and was a bit sensitive to light (read: computer and phone screens) the next few days. Then, we had family time and threw a party at our house.
My family ran a 5k Thanksgiving morning. I took it easy because I had spent the previous day in bed with that dang migraine. If I pushed too hard at the race, I got lightheaded, so I took a few short walk breaks so I didn't pass out. My pace was much better than I expected, considering. I finished in 33:40. This was also the first race that my son didn't run with me more than the first block or so - he PR'd with a 31:04 (faster than I've ever run a 5k). I'm so proud of him! He's finally gaining enough confidence in running to run his own race at his own pace. We're working on convincing him to give cross country a try.
Week #1 of marathon training is officially done and I'm on to week #2!

Training for: Key West Half Marathon, Jan 15, 2017
A mIshap and a miscalculation led me to push off my long run from Sat to Sun and . . . finally, to Monday morning. I'm off work today, so decided to knock out the long run I should have done 2 days ago. Glad I did, as it was a lovely morning. A bit breezy, but seriously unseasonably warm.
My butt hurts. Have I mentioned that? ;-) This is the chronic running niggle that has plagued me for over 5 years. I know what to do (stretching, foam rolling, lunges, squats) but I've been crappy about doing those things and it's starting to show now that my mileage is starting to pick up a bit. It didn't used to bother me while actively running, but today everything after the half way mark was fairly painful.

I just realized that there are only 2 more days left in the month!
It looks like I'm going to squeak by my goal with just 2-3 miles to spare. Since I'm adding in other cardio and cutting back some on mileage (Long Runs are same, just a higher % of weekly miles) I'm thinking that next month's goal will not be as high.1 -

Hi All! Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! I have not been totally MIA, I have been keeping up with this thread, just haven't had much time to post.
Congrats to all on your great runs, especially @Orphia , @MNLittleFinn and @RespectTheKitty and anyone else who had time or distance PRs. Awesome job!
I had a good 4 days of running at my BIL's house in Greensboro, NC. He lives in a beautiful neighborhood that surrounds a few small lakes with a network of wooded trails. Tons of pretty houses with lots of tall trees, so lots to look at while running. I did hit the trails for a few laps on two of my runs and had a complete trail run (including a mile with Stella) on Sunday before we drove home.
On Thursday, my husband, niece, our dog Stella, and I did the Greensboro Gobbler 5K run/ 3K dog run. We had a great time. The 3K was first. My husband, who doesn't run much and wasn't feeling up to a 5k, ran it with Stella. She has never done anything like this before, so we were not sure what to expect. She did fantastic. Eric said she ran the whole way and stayed focused. He even took a little video. They finished 53 of 350+, with a 10:01 average pace. I was super impressed when I saw them heading for the finish line. I thought they would be at least 5 minutes slower.
My niece and I ran the 5K together. I wasn't sure if I was going to run all out, or just stay with her. When I found out that this was her first real race, other than sorority 5Ks in college, I decided I she might appreciate me running with her (even though she told me that she did not mind if I "left" her). We were lined up towards the middle of the pack and there were close to 2000 participants, so if I had any hopes of a PR, I would have needed to start out front. In the end, running with her rather than racing on my own turned out to be a great decision. We finished in around 31 minutes. She was on cloud 9 and did not stop talking about it for most of the day. She said I helped to push her up the final hill. All in all, it was a great day and the memory I have of running with her trumps any age group award I might have gotten. Here is a photo after the race. I am not quite sure what me dog is so angry about!

@lporter229 great job running with you niece! Sounds like you created a memory that will last her a lifetime!
I got lucky this weekend, my mom offered to run with my wife so I could go PR hunting. It paid off for all of us. I got my PR, my wife ran her first 5k (first run longer than a mile in a LONG time) and my mom got to see what real easy running was like.0
