what NOT to eat

I just stopped drinking alcohol. We will see how long it lasts...
Anyway, I want to get lean. I know WHAT to eat but not what NOT to eat.
Any suggestions as to what NOT to eat so I can eliminate it from my diet and thoughts?
Thanks!

You don't need to eliminate anything you enjoy eating-that just leads to frustration and long term adherence failure.
Just eat what you like, but learn how to fit it into your calorie goals.
eta: almost 4 years into maintenance here and I drink alcohol every weekend42 -
Foods that have gone bad, make you sick, or that you don't like. And if you're planning on losing weight, too much food.50

I'd strongly recommend not eating those little Silica packets that come with new shoes.126

Also, anything you're allergic to.
That's about it.
There's no need to make dieting hard by eliminating foods in the name of losing weight.
It's easier to eat foods you find satiating, and most people over time find themselves not "spending" calories on foods that don't fill them up and aren't satisfying to them in some way, but there really aren't "shoulds" when it comes to food on a diet beyond calorie amounts.
Nutrition is important, of course, but that's a secondary issue.21 -

True but I just want someone to tell me. It's easier than left to my own devices. lol6 -

But there's no set list of things to eat/not eat-we all have individual preferences, weight goals, fitness goals etc, that will change our calorie and macro intakes from someone elses.
OP-what are you working towards-weight loss? Fitness goals? Something else?3 -

Weight loss and fitness goals.
For weight loss the only thing you need is to be eating at the correct calorie deficit for your weight goals. Doesn't matter what kinds of foods you're eating to make up your calorie intake though. Weight loss, weight gain and weight maintenance is only about CICO
For fitness goals-you may want to play around with macros a bit more, depending on what kinds of exercise you're doing, but I'll let the more experienced fitness people chime in here with more about that2 -
Here's a list of things you should not eat:
Under-cooked chicken/turkey/meat of any kind
Food that has been stored past its 'eat by' date
Beyond that there's nothing you shouldn't eat.. well except offal.. gross. Just practice portion control, and if you're trying to lean up, eat at a deficit and watch those macros closely. The deficit is all you really need to lose fat.9 -
Limiting sugar intake helps a lot too!6

Vegetables - they are contaminated with vitamins and minerals...especially broccoli. This vile weed is responsible for the deaths of millions!8

Eat foods that you like in portion sizes that fit your goals.
Get plenty of fats & protein for health and satiety.
Get plenty of fruits & veggies for the micronutrients.
Fill in the rest of your calories with carbs, sweets, and treats as you see fit.
There are no foods that you must avoid, just like there are no foods that you must include in your diet. You may find as you progress that there are some foods you don't consider worth the calories, but that's going to be highly individual. Start logging for a few days and make changes as you go along until you find what works best for you.12 -
Don't eat cake, ice cream, maple syrup, candy, donuts, potato chips, cookies, juices, bagels and stay away from sodas.12
-
Yes, get rid of all yummy foods11

And if I got rid of ice cream I would be very unhappy. I have it a few nights a week, just in smaller portions than I used to.6 -
If there is a food that you find that is near impossible to keep your serving amount at a healthy level of I do not think it is a failure to just eliminate it. I know that most jump on and say you can eat anything you want. But it is ok to acknowledge if you have a trigger food, and if so, avoid it. Everyone is different of course, and it is up to us to do what we need to do for our own success. No shame in that game. Edited to add.....if you find your list of these items is several things long, then that is different than what I am referring to here.17

Don't eat too much...that's it.
You could eat those things that "you know what to eat" and see exactly zero results if you ate too much of them.6 -
Any food that makes you go over your maintenance calories.6

Honestly I agree about not eating foods you don't like. I do not like salad and resent eating it. It makes me cranky and I still crave other food. So now I've eaten salad AND something else which defeats the purpose. Just think it out and know your calories and how much you should consume. I know that sounds simple, but I think eating SHOULD be simple.....3
