But I also have had a very sad festive season due to losing the chap in my profile picture very suddenly the week before Christmas. It prompted me to just go eff it, I need to look after myself emotionally more than anything right now and I will resume where I left off on the 1st January. So I have eaten all the foods, am super bloated and have really rather enjoyed it!

Thank you! Not sure if that was more to do with forum fatigue than anything else. I will probably disappear again about 6 hours into the 1st of January when I can no longer take the onslaught of derp that's coming!6 -
I love this. Now let me put down my water and go PP.2

Fair enough. I'm thinking the same thing.0 -

Well, it's the fifth day of Christmas! Time for some golden rings, Definitely better than all those silly birds.
Or did you mean something else?
I never knew those started after Christmas! Wow, thanks for teaching me something. This really is a great day!
Uh. The 25th, and what's the 24th, Christmas eve, so that's two, Boxing day, New Years, New Years eve, two Saturdays and Sundays, that's nine and three other days, which I believe are the Mystery days.1 -
I had to come back and take a look at this thread again. So inspired!

Last year I read a bunch of posts about what people where going to do for thanksgiving and if they were going to bring a scale to the table! I replied my plan was to try as hard as I could to eat 10,000 cals and my only fear was that I wasn't going to be able to!
This Christmas holiday, I did do my diet (IF) and stuck to that and I didn't eat a single piece of candy, not that I was afraid of gaining weight, but because I read sugar contributes to gout and I've had a lot of problems with it lately so I haven't had a single piece of candy for this whole holiday and I didn't miss it because i associate it with gout. And, my gout has subsided the last few days! Also I lost 2-lbs this week which is crazy for this time of year and I ate a lot but just not sugar (cheeses were my go-to indulgence this holiday).1 -

Jake, Jake, don't you know the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas"?1 -
I gained 5 lbs after Christmas. I ate a little of everything, but reduced my portions, kept up my excercising especially walking--4 hrs Christmas Day, and another 4 hrs the next day, St. Stevens (a holiday here). I took your advice and drank extra. After 2 days the extra weight was gone. Yay WinoGelato!! Thanks for being there when I needed you.1

Jake listen to the song. On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me---"5 golden rings". You'll understand the "birds" if you listen to it all.1

Two more nights of bacchanalia for me, before I get back on the wagon.2

Measured my waist this morning out of curiosity. Only 1" gain. Considering I've done no exercise for at least a month and am salt and carb bloated, that's pretty good going! End of January is when I'll see the true damage and by then I'll be back to routine and will care even less than I do now.0

So glad it was helpful! I too am back down to my pre-Christmas weight as of this morning. It's a couple pounds higher than my pre Thanksgiving low but still within my maintenance range. Yeah for perspective!

I'm 0.4lb above my pre-Christmas weight, but I started lifting again, so I suspect some water retention in there too. I love the awareness that this community brought to me.0 -

Yes - the twelfth day (Shakespeare's Twelfth Night) is the Eve of the Epiphany - January 5th.
In England, it is the traditional date for taking down Christmas decorations. Is that the same elsewhere?
That's what my family always did. I didn't carry on the tradition. I'm already sick of them. The house has started to feel cluttered. I want my regular house back.1 -
Can I add a perseverance P? Like don't throw your hands up and say its all over just because you spent a week (a few weeks) mostly in the Red? Keep on keeping on and turn it around!5

Great post. I didn't weigh in the day after Christmas but the day after that it was up a few pounds. Now it's under what I was before the holidays. Any time my weight goes up, I talk myself off the ledge by reminding my panicked brain that I did not eat that many calories above my maintenance numbers.
@vintagefeline I'm so sorry for your loss. In August I lost my bird after 25 1/2 years, so I know how much our animals mean to us and that everything gets magnified this time of year. When it first happened I lost a few pounds because I couldn't eat for a few days, then went the opposite direction and used food because I just didn't care about anything at that point.

I learned to dislike the feeling of being too full and eating in excess. I didn't, apart from 25th maybe. I still went over my calories some days, but for me being sensible during Christmas, as I aim to be any day is better approach. I didn't dread Christmas at all, I had plan of what treats I will indulge, in what quantities, when I will find time for a walk, swim or gym session
I had great time, and still have a meal out today but I am really happy that I didn't go into Christmas period doesn't count mode. I feel better when I eat the right quantities food and I exercise. It's the time with the family, catching up with friends, feeling good about how the year went, feeling good about what did I achieve this year, feeling good about myself - it's wonderful to finish the year like this!
I actually found being sensible and feeling as I do at the end of the year enjoyable. More enjoyable than eating pie while already full
However, I agree with the post. If you gained few pounds there isn't point of losing sleep over it and making too big deal. Half of it is probably water weight. Get back to normal and the weight will be gone in no time

In Ireland we take the decorations down on the 6th and call it "nollaig na mban" (womens christmas). Basically, the menfolk take down all the decorations and take on all the house duties for the day (cooking, cleaning, child minding etc) and the ladies get the "day off" to go and do whatever we want.8 -

Oh I love that. I'm part Irish, I'm totally going to try to sell my husband on this idea...4 -

I just read through this thread for the first time. Don't know how I missed it last year. It's awesome! I decided around December 21st that I wasn't going to get on the scale till January 7th. It's been difficult because i'm a daily weigher. But I want to give myself time to "normalize" to see what the true damage is. Yes, I've eaten over every day. Yes I've had bailey's in my coffee in the morning and wine with dinner. But I've also cross country skiied just about every day. Should be interesting to get on the scale.
I read somewhere else that it's not what you eat between Christmas and New Years that's the problem......it's what you eat between New Years and Christmas. So true!
Here's to a fantastic 2017 and may we all have a healthy relationship with our food9
