There is probably more water weight loss for a keto diet than just a low calorie or low fat diet, because once you use up all of your glycogen (which happens on a low carb diet), all the water that was bound to the glycogen is gone, too. Each gram of glycogen is bound to 4 grams of water. So we should all lose a lot of weight the first week due to diuresis. Not because we are losing fat, although there is some fat loss, too. The reason this is important to understand is that you can gain 5-10 lbs overnight if you go to a birthday party and eat a piece of cake or something, and your glycogen stores are repleted. It has nothing to do with fat loss or fat gain, it's all water. Fat loss is less dramatic on the scale. Once you have lost that initial exhilirating several pounds, weight loss will slow down. I will be happy with 1-2 lbs/week.

Even if it's just water weight, is it still visibly noticeable?
Very much so! Your clothes will fit looser and your measurements will change whether it's water or fat that is lost. Conversely, your clothes will fit tighter the day after you eat carbs while on a keto diet.

Wow, I am having such an easy low carb day!
I wasn't hungry when I woke up so sipped on tea and went to Jazzercise.
After Jazzercise, I munched on raw veggies and homemade blue cheese dip, then got busy with a bunch of chores. Fixed low carb crabcakes, roasted cauliflower, and dilled green beans for dinner, all of which were delicious.
I still have calories left, but am not hungry, and feel very satisfied. That's a nice dilemma to have! Usually I am looking for stuff to munch on in the evenings. No cravings!
I am tickled with the way this is going. The raw veggies are really helping me. I didn't eat as many raw veggies the last time I did this.
I wanted to mention that there are some snacks that people might like to know about if they want "junk food". One is pork rinds. Another is Whisps.

Thanks for the snack ideas.0

Great job today, everyone!
Totally agree with the diuretic effect of the first few days, but it's a great motivator! I was sick this weekend and had to get some new meds and have jumped up 3 lbs. The key is to not give up and press on! It will sort itself out.
Been at this for 40 days and finally someone at work asked if I was losing weight. NSV!2 -
Oh, and as for keto sticks, I found them over the counter at a target in NY, but they are behind the counter in Canada so far as I can tell.
Just remember that keto sticks will be positive whether you are burning dietary fat or your own. I tend to use them after going out to be sure I'm still burning (assess the damage), usually 2 hours after. Otherwise, you should be burning most of the time.2 -
Wow so much info here!!! In the middle of my workout I was hit by the hungry bug. So I went for the PNB and then added some cream cheese.. for a make shift fat bomb, wish I had a few dark chocolate chips to add to the mix.
I am sure there are lots better concoctions but with my bottle of water it filled me up.
Thanks all I like... this new way of eating!

Hello all! Question: Is it possible to be losing weight and not be in Ketosis? I'm losing weight, my face is not all puffy, my stomach is "deflating". But is it only water weight? My carbs are around 35 - 45 a day. Thank you!!!0

There are all sorts of different thoughts on this. But you can be between 20 to 100 g of carbs and be in ketosis. There are also a lot of low-carb diets that people go on to lose weight. Water weight loss is weight loss! Before you go into ketosis you have to use up your stores of glycogen which takes an average of two days. That is where the initial water loss comes from. If you continue to eat low-carb you should convert into ketosis and burn fat. Here's a very interesting link that will answer your question.

Day 4 -the keto stick shows I am definitely in ketosis. I lost another .2 pounds today. Bringing the total since Sunday to –2.8 pounds. Thanks for all the sharing of recipes! And all the information from the people that have been on this type of eating plan for a while.
This is such a great group of people!

Diary - I wanted to point out to people that may be looking at my diary that I generally do a 19:5 fast. This is where I eat during a five hour window of time. I started this over a year ago because of my Lymes disease. It is supposed to be a long enough time between eating for your body to rid itself of dead and dying cells. This promotes the regeneration of healthy cells that are needed to combat the Lymes disease. So, all the food that you see in my breakfast lunch and dinner slot is actually eaten during a five hour time period Not really definite meals. I start eating at around 3 o'clock until 8 o'clock. I love this way of eating for me because I am a nighttime snacker and this works out really well for my eating style.

You do not have to be in ketosis to lose weight, and yes ivieland, you will lose the puffiness , bloat etc...and may see results similar all over your body, as well as on the scale, or not. Everyone is different.

Mary you probably know this already but you can go into settings and rename the current breakfast/lunch/dinner to something more meaning. Like 3:00 First Meal, 8:00 final meal, etc.0 -

Actually, I have no idea how to do that! Maybe that needs to be done on the computer. I only use my iPhone. I will check to see if I can do that!
Update! I was not able to change anything from my phone.I was able to change it on the computer! Thanks!0 -

This article it will explain the water weight loss at the beginning of going on the keto diet.

The first week initial loss of weight is probably your body using up the glycogen stores in your liver and muscles. If you go back to eating and burning carbs your body will again build up glycogen stores probably equal to what weight you lost during that first week. Not the weight that you lost after that first week though!

DDHFree- i'm so glad that your concerns are being answered! It is always scary to do something that you have never done before.

Heart Burn- I have had heartburn the last couple of days since starting Quito. I researched it today and found that that is something that does happen sometimes to some people. Usually it's the opposite where if you have heartburn it clears up. What they said is that your stomach is probably upset with the amount of fat or protein that has been eaten compared to what normally was eaten. The remedy is 1 tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar in 6–8 ounces of water. It works well and quickly! Don't forget to add it to your diary!

That was great and reassuring. I've heard horror stories that the MOMENT you start eating more than 40-50g of carbs (EVEN ON A CALORIE DEFICIT) you'll gain ALL your weight back in a day or two.

I have heard the same .. if it isn't "substainable".. it won't be a lasting lost. That is why I want to take it slow not whole hog.. (LOL pun not intended) and make this a lifestyle dietary change.1 -

You won't gain all the weight back possibly only the first week of water loss through your body using up the glycogen stores. When you go back to eating carbs your body will rebuild up the glycogen stores thus your body will retain water for that process.
