I bailed out on my run last night. I hate excuses, but after working through the list of why I shouldn't run the 8 miles I was planning, it seemed the smart thing to do.
Reasons not to run yesterday:- Raining, 40F and falling
- It would have been my 5th day in a row running (normally I run 3 days in a row, max)
- I averaged less than 6 hours sleep for the last few nights (I suck at sleep)
- I ate too much when I got home and had a full stomach (normally I don't give myself any slack for that dumb move, but hey...I'm making a list)
- I had felt a dull ache in both Achilles during the day so they probably needed rest
- My main impetus for running is a silly goal of getting my first 200 mile month.
I'm still going after that 200 mile month. I need 13.6 more miles and I'm going to try to get it all tonight...6 miles during my son's soccer practice, and the rest I drive him home.
In 9 days I have a 16.7 mile trail race. It's a loop with a 4,700 elevation change. That's twice the elevation change per mile than the trails I've been training on. I had considered entering the 50 mile event (3 loops) but as the day gets closer, I'm glad I didn't. I talked to an experienced ultrarunner who has run this a few times and he says the 17 mile loop runs like a marathon and the 50 mile race runs like a 100K. My intent is to run it as a training run, keeping my HR in the middle of Zone 2 as much as possible.10 -
@WhatMeRunning you made an awesome comeback!2

What a difference a year makes!
I was comparing long runs from this year, last year, and the year before and found the most identical runs from each year I could. 2015 is just over 18 miles, and 2016 and 2017 are just over 20 miles. All on pavement, and relatively flat.
2015: 10:32 pace -> 147 bpm Average HR
2016: 9:26 pace -> 151 bpm Average HR
2017: 9:26 pace -> 139 bpm Average HR
This makes me wonder what my pace would be if I were to push it to 151 bpm this year. Daniel's tables, which have been VERY accurate for me once I built up a good base, predicts a 9:00 pace at 150bpm. After my ultra and recovery, I think I'm going to find out if that's right.

Only 1 mile today as cool down after weights.
Getting anxious for some races. Got my Peachtree Road Race confirmation the other day, pretty happy about that!

@_nikkiwolf_ There must be something weird with my setup, but I just have zeros for all my calorie counts in Strava...I see all the other data (elevation etc), just no calorie burn. I'm not too fussed though; I get all the data I need through Garmin Connect.

Got a mile in at Orangetheory yesterday, and two miles in today. So I completed my goal for the month! I go to Orangetheory tomorrow, so I will have maybe another 1-1.5 to add to the total. I'm glad I made it! I wasn't sure if I would! I'm ready for April, also my birthday month!4

Before anyone asks, here it is. April's Challenge....

@_nikkiwolf_ Well look at that...there are all of my calories! Thank you so much; I feel like an idiot now for not even thinking about that, but thank you! Now to answer the earlier question...yeah Strava is definitely overestimating calories: 1516 (Strava) vs 899 (Garmin) for this morning's run. It was 11 miles of very easy running, so even if Strava is showing gross calories as opposed to net, that's still over a 600 calorie difference in less than a couple of hours.1

Ticked over my goal yesterday. Now it's all bonus miles. . . or maybe meters. . . ow. Dang speedwork.4

I didn't run yesterday because that sore knee from a almost 2 weeks ago was much worse yesterday. It is feeling better today, so I'm going to take a short run tonight wearing a brace. I won't run tomorrow night before the Sat. morning race. I'll still plan to wear the brace on Sat., and that is on the same hilly technical trails where I got runner's knee during a training run. The goal is not to win, but to do my best, not get [more] injured, and at least complete it. I fear that my competitive spirit will put me going to fast early on (I have this issue) and I'll either get injured or at best, my total time will suffer because I start out too fast.
The good news: More recent weather forecasts show rain will not start until afternoon. While the trails may be a bit muddy from rain earlier in the week, it isn't expected to be raining during the race and not even the prior day. So they won't be as bad as they could be.
I'm really quite nervous, but trying to keep expectations low and plan everything in order to curb anxiety. Two things I learned from the 'practice run' I did last Sat.:
1. I still have a lot of trouble starting out too fast and I need to really make an effort to restrain myself.
2. I need to not over-dress. Last Sat. it was raining and 40's, so I wore a long-sleeve 1/3 zip with wicking fabric over a synthetic short-sleeve shirt. Despite the rain and cold, I was sweating quite a bit (good thing it was all wicking, and I wouldn't go out with cotton because of sweat anyway). However, I would have been better off with just the short sleeve by the time I was done.2 -
45k ride this morning, took wrong roads and ended up on very busy road, wanted to to the usual 50km but i took it as a sign.
I'm feeling extremely drowsy, I can not sleep and then i pay.yhe price of it during the day. Also i manage to be in standby mode trying to save any drop of energy for Sunday, but the combination of the 2 makes me a zoombie.
Tomorrow I'll run final 9 miles super cautiously, then prob ride a bit on Saturday morning, finally my summer cycling kit has harrived and i want to try it, so a quick ride in the morning before catching my train seems ok
I also think I'm going to bake a fruit cake tonight, I'm very bored.7 -

3.2 miles this morning, came home with a new running partner. This little lady decided halfway through my run she wanted to be with me. She ran home with me, I took her to the vet no chip, drove around to ask all the kids at the bus stops if they knew this dog. So now I'm truly hoping the police don't come knocking on my dog to ask why I was doing the "missing dog" routine at the all the bus stops this morning ha ha. I posted her precious face online everywhere and finally had to break down and call animal control. She become like instant attached, she wouldn't go more than 1 foot from my side and decided to sleep on my feet. Ah!
I hope her owners comes go to get her, she's a gem. In the second picture she was sound asleep, I just stood there for 20 mins until she woke up. Dang why is she sideways. You'll just have to turn your monitor screen ha ha

@midwesterner85 -Good luck this weekend!
@skippygirlsmom -She is a beauty! Did she have the bandana around her neck already? If so, at least you know she belongs to somebody. I'm sure they will come for her. If not, I might just drive down there and get her!3 -

Notes:
Just some easy miles this morning. One of my goals for this month was to actually do my easy runs at an easy pace, and I've done a great job sticking to it! I'm definitely starting to appreciate the power of slow runs Just one run left this month- some goal race pace miles tomorrow. We'll see how it goes, right now the forecast is calling for cold (mid 30s), rain, and high winds (15+ mph) so I might call it a "tempo" run instead of race pace that way I don't feel bad running a little slower than goal when I'm heading into the wind
Love all this talk about Boston! It helps keep me motivated for some of my long-term running goals! One of which is to qualify for and run Boston
@girlinahat what a lovely place to vacation! Love the pictures
@MNLittleFinn welcome back! I definitely understand needing that time away, it's hard to stay active on here when everyone is doing what you love while you cant
@autumnblade75 OMG I'm dying!! I wonder if there is a world record category for fastest race while dressed as a dinosaur? Could be a fun goal
@WhatMeRunning Awesome comeback, congratulations on crushing your goal for the month!
@7lenny7 That's some amazing improvement! It can be hard day to day to notice any changes, but I always love hearing about long-term improvement like that. Keeps me motivated to get out there and keep working hard!
@skippygirlsmom Aww she is too cute! I hope you can find her owners, they must be missing her so much
Training For:
03/19: Excalibur 10 Miler (Viera, FL) 1:19:00 - new PR!
04/23: Ravenswood Run, 5K (Chicago)
05/21: Chicago Spring Half Marathon
10/08: Chicago Marathon
11/26: Space Coast Half Marathon (Cocoa, FL)3 -
@skippygirlsmom that dog is awesome! It sounds like she's already got you wrapped around her little paw. It will be hard to give her up.@7lenny7 That sounds like a fun race! 16 with 4700ft vert NIIIIIIIICE! I'd be all over that! Might be a good idea to use poles for those climbs. I've been thinking about getting some.
I've got poles but I don't if they'd hold up to that abuse and I don't have time to try them out before then.
I misread the vertical...I thought it was 4700 gain/4700 drop, but that's total, so *just* 2350' each.
They also hold a 50 mile and 100 mile race next weekend on the same loop. Next year I'll sign up for the 50, which has a midnight start. After the race I'm volunteering to help clean up, pack up, and haul out. I think I'm looking forward to that as much as the race.
Here's how it looks on paper:
