40+ Club : Where the Cool Kids Are

My daughter and I enjoyed the last Beach Race of the series yesterday evening. The series is run by a local running club and is very well organized. The course was pretty challenging for me.
The sand and hot sun really drained me the first time. I think I ran that first one in June in 32:08, which happened to be good enough for a 3rd AG.
I ran the second one in July. The course was even hotter and pretty torn up from storms and tourists. We all spent a lot of time and energy jockeying for flat ground. I’m pretty sure everyone’s times were slow, especially since I landed 1st AG with a 31:56.
Last night started great. Overcast skies. A great breeze off of the water. And then you hit the turn-around. My goodness, that wind at your back isn’t very cooling, is it?! Right around mile 2, I wanted nothing more than to dive into the Gulf! But I made it to the finish line where water and wet towels awaited. My 31:16 was good enough for 2nd AG.
These were some pretty challenging races for me. Even though my times aren’t very impressive, I’m thrilled that I improved with each race. Now it’s time to start adding miles in preparation for my first half in November.
Oh, and I finally finished and hung my new race bling holder! No more piles of tangled medals on the vanity. Yay!

@BettyM1017 Congrats on the second place age group finish!! Running on sand is TOUGH.
I love the "bling holder". I'm looking at my tangled pile of race bibs and finisher medals........and thinking that I need to follow your lead.1 -

@gam3rguy Awesome run! Enjoy the Warrior Dash. I loved it. For you it's going to be a walk in the park.0

Quit the gym today for home and outdoor workouts, only went a hand full of times since I joined, so I've been wasting money the last year thinking I would get more into it, but the only thing there I used was the treadmill then I'd leave.I have a spin bike, weights, rope, bands, DVDs, stepper at home I think I'm covered and I love the outdoors walking . This is my plan for dropping the pounds, so many wonderful examples here of success and sticking to it hope it runs off on me. Goodnight all ☺2

Hi,
I am 49yrs old and would like to join.3 -
hi. I'm 45 and struggling to lose all the extra weight. I've picked up about 8kgs this year, mostly due to not eating and exercising enough. looking forward to the journey ahead.3

Ran 3 fast miles, followed by some lifting. Hubs joined me at the gym, which is rare, so that was nice.2

This thread is so fun! Seeing all these activities people are doing and goals people have is inspiring.0

Backed off the high mileage this weekend and changed things up with a race simulation effort. It was a beautiful morning, sunny with low humidity. Four of us started with an open water swim, then rode a 2 hour bike course, finishing with an hour run. Felt pretty good to push the pace. Rest day tomorrow.

So I would like to join this group. My name is Jules, I am 53, married with two adult children and for the last ten years have sat on the couch eating and my way into lethargy. Don't know what woke me up but this summer I found myself with 66 lbs to lose and a whole lot of bad habits to change. I am starting slowly though. I joined a gym and discovered lifting using the 5 x 5 programme which I do 3 x weekly. I have discovered yoga and go to one class a week but practice at least 3 more. I hate cardio but am slowly working on getting my steps up and this week will introduce an hours swim to my exercise calendar. Foodwise I have cleaned things up but being Scottish, alcohol is the last to go. I have cut it back to 3 nights a week though lol - baby steps. So far I have lost 3 lbs but I am desperate not to give up. Hopefully joining this group will help keep me on track. I found your stories so motivating, thanks for sharing.7

Hi, I'm 47. Can I join the cool kids? Please?3

Well done cool kids! So many of you are just knocking things outta the park daily.
I had a fun weekend, that left me totally wiped out last night. I did a nice 40+km bike ride on Saturday. It's an out and back route, and going out was a breeze. Took me 47 minutes to ride the 13 miles. On the return I had a nasty head wind, so the ride took me exactly an hour. As I got to the last 10km, I crested the hill into a wall of thick fog! When I left, it was sunny.
Sunday we decided to go kayaking on the lake. By the time we headed out, the winds were picking up and the waves were getting bigger. We didn't get too far, so we decided to head back and stick closer to shore. Soon, there were white caps that were crashing over the boats. As we lined up to head to shore, I capsized. Thank goodness I knew how to wet exit and that the water was warm. Came up with my hat and sunglasses still perched on my head. We traded the kayaks for the open spirits and tried surfing the waves. I got pretty beat up as I was being rocketed to shore. Decided to just play in the waves without any boats. It was glorious. Body is sore this morning.2 -
I start back lifting today after a two-1/2 week vacation break. Yeesh....I am afraid of the DOMs, so am choosing to do only two sets for each workout this week. I can ramp back up to three sets soon enough.
Meanwhile, I have started my diet! I am using a macro-program to help me with this cut....and I hope I don't want to chew my arm off, but even if I do, I really need to drop some bulk. My back is sore nearly all the time, now, and I can only attribute that to bulk I have put on, in strange places, since menopause. I have a birthday in about ten weeks, so aiming for ten lbs down by then.

3m easy on the treadmill. Ran in between two very fit young women and didn't feel like a lumbering elephant by comparison. Winning!4

Well I've been on vacation for over a week so there will be a lot of workout needed when I get home on Saturday! Burgers, fast food, Smores, kit kat, chips, beer, nachos, ice cream, oh my! No hiking yet and I remember now how poorly I sleep while camping.0
