How to become that skinny friend who eats what they want and dont gain weight

How come some skinny people eat more than an overweight person and remain the same ?I see so many skinny people stuffing their face constantly and they stay the same all the time.I dont get it do you ? I would love to be one of those people lol
yes, and Godzilla might come out of the sea....
It's a hypothetical situation my friend, and hypotheticals do not exist. Unless you've got data from several studies showing that a large majority of skinny folks can constantly stuff their faces 24/7 without repercussions, THOSE PEOPLE DO NOT EXIST. ...just like Godzilla.
So the next time you imagine some jack skellington stuffing his pie-hole with a meat-lovers pizza at several intervals throughout the day, tell yourself....yeah...and Godzilla might come out of the sea!9 -
its like the side mirrors on cars that say "objects in (the) mirror are closer than appear" things are not always what they seem. I was one of those when younger who could eat and eat and not gain anything it was because I was active(taking meds for my asthma wound me up to so that could have boosted my metabolism a bit because it was basically a type of amphetamine that was prescribed).
I could eat a whole medium pizza myself, drink 13 cans on dr pepper(yes I did that in one day),I didnt eat breakfast though, and I would snack throughout the day and maybe have a few sandwiches in between those times. fast forwards to late 20s early 30s and I became less active but still ate like that(just a little less pizza) but added in other things and boom, I gained weight. also I was taken off those meds. over time I gained the weight it wasnt overnight.
The thing is how do you know when you arent home or the person isnt home that they arent being active somewhere at some time? and if the person truly is sedentary and eating a lot and not gaining it could mean an underlying health condition or that they are still eating in maintenance. you cant worry about what others eat or dont eat. if you are that curious ask them and talk to them maybe they will share with you. But I dont worry about what others eat I worry about myself and could care less if someone thinner than me can eat more. sure it would be nice to be like that and I was that person but Im not now and I have to be more active or eat less.2 -
I used to be jealous of the people who were always thin and never appeared to struggle. Now in our 30s, the tables have turned. I'm the one who had to develop the healthy habits, had to learn self-discipline, fitness, and how to properly nourish myself. I'm flourishing. Many of the ones who were thin without trying have now gained weight, and they're trying diet after fad diet to get rid of it because they haven't yet learned the value of patience on the fitness journey.
Some of your thin friends will stay that way forever- lucky them- but many of them will find that their poor nutrition choices affect them in a very negative way later down the road. I agree with many of the statements above- you do you, and don't worry about them.8 -

No, it was a segment on a show. I can't find it in my history. I originally found it from a link on this forum.
The bottom line was that heavier friend ate way more calories than the skinny friend. The heavier woman under estimated her intake and over estimated her friends.
This isn't it, but it demonstrates a similar concept. People eat more than they think. When I first started tracking with a food scale, it was pretty damn clear why I had gained weight.
When our office has pizza parties, it's me, the thinnest one, who is eating the most pizza. That's what they see and have to go by. What they don't see is I have a small breakfast of just coffee, a measured out portion of cereal, and a yogurt for breakfast, along with a light dinner like a chicken salad (~800-1000 calories between those two meals). They also aren't with me when I'm running 45-60 miles per week.9 -

YUP.
I continue to be amazed at this.
What I thought of as a "healthy" serving is 2, 3, sometimes even 4 servings. Like for instance, I went to a Mediterranean buffet the other day and they had rice pudding. I made myself a mug of rice pudding for dessert and thought I'd made out like a bandit. Bought some from TJs the other day and measured out a serving per label.... it was LESS THAN HALF of what I'd imagined a serving was when I went to the buffet.
*AHEM*
This definitely explains a lot of the "I'm eating healthy, I don't know why I'm gaining weight"! questions.11 -
Im with you... hate those people! Haha my best friend is skinny as a rail. Hip bones sticking out and everything and she eats like a whale and hardly works out. WHY GOD WHY??18

I’ve got conflicting feelings about this.
On the one hand, I ate takeout for dinner 6 nights a week and had a couple slices of pizza every other day growing up (I grew up in Manhattan, working parents, etc.), but I never ate breakfast, walked a ton, only used public transportation, and played 3 sports... I graduated at 5’7 and 125 lbs. I was super super skinny.
In college, I still ate pretty terribly, TERRIBLY, but was on a large campus so walked a decent amount. I drank way too much but played a sport in the spring... but still, I didn’t gain much weight at all. Probably 15 pounds over the 4 years and it was across my body, not specifically in my belly. Shoulders got bigger, chest, etc.
I feel that almost as soon as I turned 21 though, things just caught up with me. My lifestyle actually got less sedentary - had a job where I was on my feet, lived in a city with no car, active social life, probably even drank a little less and I definitely ate better - no bottomless fries in the cafeteria or 25 cent wing nights. But I started to notice my size 28 pants wouldn’t fit, then a double chin when I put my head down, that sort of thing.
Fast forward to 33, and if I have a bingy weekend I notice it in the mirror. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I was able to be one of those people for a while, but as I got older, even without that much in a change in activity level from college to after, there must have been a change in my BMR.0 -
I think a key phrase here is "what they want". This idea fascinates me, because I'm coming to figure out that many "naturally thin" people just don't want that much food.
I "want" so much food that I get sick eating. That was the case when I was fat. Although I've changed my habits and even predilections somewhat, I still sometimes eat and eat and eat, far beyond the point of satiety into uncomfortable territory.
I don't think "naturally thin" people feel that way.22 -

I agree. Another key is how people deal with happiness/anxiety/stress/joy/etc. One of my college buddies is naturally very thin. Sometimes he eats a ton, but if he isn't in the mood or the food doesn't look/smell that good he just won't eat. If he is anxious or stressed out at all he doesn't eat. He doesn't automatically overeat just because it's a holiday or whatever. He didn't eat an entire pizza just because it was there. Sometimes he would eat an entire pizza because he was hungry or the mood was right. Overall he ate less than the rest of us. He has a different relationship with food than most people (myself included).
My wife is a little that way. Some days she barely eats based on her mood or what's available. Nothing puts me out of the mood to eat. She just doesn't get why anyone would eat until they were uncomfortably full.8 -

There's a great book called "Intuitive Eating" that discusses this exact point. Some people are natural intuitive eaters, i.e. they're in tune with their bodies' cues and don't have the desire to overeat, while some people (like me and probably most of America) eat more for many other reasons including emotions/atmosphere/habit/etc.2 -
Move around a lot.

See this is kind of part of the issue with the perception of effortless thinness. It APPEARS like her intake is that high because it isn't concretely quantified, but I highly doubt her daily maintenance intake is 6000 even with heavy activity.
For reference I only burned 6937 on the day of my 50 mile ultra including several kilometres of walking around Whistler AND I'm a tall broad. I really can't see Freelee putting in the level of physical effort that would be commensurate to a woman her height burning that much on the daily, idgaf what super banana powers she claims to have lol.11 -

Well the roomie doesn't work, and I'm guessing the OP does? So I'm thinking hidden cameras.
I'm thinking op.should spend more.time worrying about herself than her room mate.
Is it just me that thinks of single white female.here
Haha you are so immature .Who said it was my roomate ? And who said I was worried ?Seriously you guys on MFP need to be a bit more educated and maybe read over what I posted again
You said you live with the person. Your mom? Your wife? Sister? What difference does it make? I'm not sure why I assumed female, but if it's a guy, that's another reason they can eat more.
And it's not nice insulting people just because you're not getting the answers you're expecting. That's, erm, immature.
Where did I insult someone ? Immature is that the word you think is an insult. The truth hurts doesnt it but anyway I have the answer now so you dont need to waste your time arguing with some stranger on the internet that you will never know LOL
Yes, calling someone immature, especially where it's not warranted because YOU lack understanding on the topic and people are trying to HELP YOU understand, is definitely an insult. Quit projecting.
Oh really ? What about the comment you were laughing about with somebody else where they called me a "white single female' which I am not for your information. What if I so happened to be someone who lost a partner to death recently and you are there cracking immature jokes about someone you dont even know. Also why refer to someone as being 'white'.Why does it matter if someone is white or black ?3 -

You will have to look up the movie to understand. Or better yet, watch it. Good movie.13 -
BTW - OP - I agree with you. The childish attacks are really ridiculous. But this is the internet and you have to have a think skin. I personally ignore it.
Good luck.
BTW - I still haven't found the video I was looking for. I bet I'll stumble across it a year from now and then I won't be able to find this thread.2 -
Dewd2 - I've watched every BBC diet show from Fat Families to Secret Eaters and I love the one you mentioned but don't recall the name. My husband is one of those people that shock others with the large amounts he eats in restaurants. They don't see the work he does to balance that or that although small he is solid muscle and can eat more calories. Physics don't work differently on our skinny friends.0

They were comparing your situation to the movie. It's nobody else's fault that you didn't understand it and found it offensive. It's not really your fault, either, if you're not familiar with the movie. Now you know.
Stop taking every statement as a personal attack. You came hear to learn, yes? So stop deflecting and pay attention.15 -
I see you posted this in Nutrition category...not the debate...so will respond to your question. I think it is genetics at their particular age at this particular time. Case in point, a few of my best girl friends were all naturally skinny when we were in teens and twenties, 30's. Couldn't gain weight for nothing even eating average of 4,000 calories of food a day. One gal was trying to gain weight focused on 4,000 cal/day. Some didn't care about her weight, average height, ate whatever they felt like. one gal was about 4'10" tall. So fast forward to we are all in our late 50s, early 60s. One gal who was trying to gain weight is now on Ensure and can't keep enough weight on even for a healthy range, the 4'10" gal is 'bottom heavy' for her size (not overweight, its just settled a li'l south), the other normal weight friends are still in that category of normal weight. Tho, none of us eat like we used to with the 4,000 cal/day or even 2,000 cal/day. We all eat a healthy normal diet. We eat till we are full and then stop. If we feel like "salad" we eat "salad"...if we feel like "pizza" we eat "pizza"..or whatever.
So, its genetics.
(for the record, I log it all cuz I'm a distance cyclist)0 -

All these naysayers...
I just want to acknowledge that what you're witnessing does happen. I was one of those people in my 20s. I'm still one of those people, to a slightly lesser degree, now that I'm older. Observe, a day in the life of my 20s-self!
Breakfast:
Two sausage and egg breakfasts (from a fast food joint, so roughly ~600 calories each: 1200 calories total)
1 Snickers (~200 calories)
Orange juice ('cause that balances out everything and makes it healthy, right?)(~100 calories)
BREAKFAST TOTAL: 1500 calories
Lunch:
Jack in the Box Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger (~900 calories)
Jack in the Box Seasoned Curly Fries (~400 calories)
Diet Coke (because...balance and negation...) (0 calories)
LUNCH TOTAL: 1300 calories
Dinner:
Mostly the same as lunch: 1300 calories
And then tequila shots with friends later in the evening! five shots at ~70/calories each= 350 calories
Followed by Denny's to soak up the alcohol: All American Slam ~900 calories
DINNER TOTAL: 2550
Oh, and there were also at least two venti mochas each day to help me stay awake and stuff. What's that? 700 calories total? So now we're at 3250.
And the building in which I worked had these really good chocolate chip cookies. I always had at least one of those. Add at least another 100, because they were big cookies.
So what are we looking at: 3350 calories a day? And not really working out? I mean, I'd run a few miles here and there, but that was about it. I still hovered at between a size 6 and 8 (4 in some brands!)
My secret? Luck. That's it. I got really lucky with my metabolism.
I mean, I think I've read that if you're some crazy kind of beast at the gym then your metabolism is always revving, but that wasn't me. I was just lucky.12 -
I feel ya! Been there my whole life. I don't think we really know all the reasons why yet, but I have read some interesting studies. The scientists are just starting to learn about the trillions of bacteria that live inside us. One did a study with two mice, where the intestinal bacteria was taken out of the fat mouse and implanted in the skinny one and vice a versa. The fat mouse got skinny and the skinny mouse got fat. So it's possible that gut bacteria has something to do with it. I also read an article that suggested that our endocrine system plays a role. The hormones insulin, is the fat storage hormone. Some people become diabetic from sugar and carbs, others don't. My take away is to figure out what works best for you and focus there. As unfair as it seems, you can't compare yourself against someone like that, or you will feel bad all the time. Oh and if you do find the answer, let me know! Good luck!

Please note: I am going to move this section to debate now. The OP has had their question answered by several different view points and I feel from here for this discussion to continue it needs to be clear this has become a debate and I encourage people to cite their sources going forward (in this discussion) than only sharing anecdotal information.
For the OP and anyone else who has posted, please abandon this thread now if you aren't interested in a respectful, scientific based debate and discussion on the topics. Its completely okay if that isn't what or even how you are wanting to have this conversation but then move along because its now in debate.
