Unwarranted Advice

People love to offer advice. My favorite was when I was still over 200 Lbs someone told me not to lose "too much" weight. Of course, I replied that I had a sensible goal in mind and that I would stop losing weight when I was happy with where I was in my weight loss. My ultimate goal is 115 but if I'm happy with where I am at 130 then that is when I'll begin my maintenance.
The other one was a lady I met in park the summer before last. I had already lost about 130 Lbs or so and she asked what I was eating, I was more honest than most people want me to be and told her what I ate and my philosophy for eating the way I do. She proceeded to tell me that what I was doing was wrong and that she had lost 40 Lbs and proceeded to explain exactly why I was wrong even though she had gained more than half of her weight back. I finally had enough and I was more than a little snarky and frustrated when I told her, "I've lost 130 Lbs and so I obviously know what works for me."
The truth is that what works for me might not work for anyone else but at this time I've lost 219 Lbs and am 159 Lbs. This is a huge accomplishment but I have worked my butt off to achieve what I have so far and continue to do that everyday.
By the way, the stupidity of peoples advice leaves me speechless sometimes as I was also told not to exercise "too much". This is in no way helpful as, of course, I don't think I exercise "too much". I love to exercise now which is great for me. I always listen to my body and if I'm exhausted, I call it quits for the day. Granted, I do have a tendency to push myself hard and I personally think that is a good thing.21 -

Because if you do, the weight will be cumin off.
(and yes, I know that's not how it's pronounced)

Great thread. Made me laugh, often. There should be a cup for the best worst advice! I'd award joint first place to the banana moron and the water-talker.5

lol. I hear this a lot too. It's one of my favorites. But if you actually can't digest it, shouldn't that be helpful for weight loss since you would be just pooping it all out before your body got any of the calories?3 -

Yep. That is exactly how a malabsorption issue works and why those with them struggle to keep weight on.1 -

Lol, I was just going to say that. That's why it annoys me when people who know I have malabsorption issues tell me to eat bagels and refined carbs to gain weight.
That's not how this works.

I find it really annoying when I mention anything I'm experimenting with in diet/fitness to anyone who has ever had an opinion on the subject because 95% of the time that person believes their way is the ONLY way and wants to lecture me about why I'm doing it "wrong".1

I have to say that the most annoying recently is people who HAVE lost the weight who swear it was because of their special diet i.e. vegan, gluten free, keto, etc.
Ugh I have to keep my mouth shut. It’s like okay...that special diet was just a means to a calorie deficit. The calorie deficit is what did it. But noooooooo they swear it was the gluten. Face palm1 -
my company got invited to test some kind of health project recently...comes with workoutplan, dietplan and videos to reduce stress...
I asked if it was just another low carb diet...and they said "no no..this is food for everyone"...
I got the costplan and was mildly in shock...they suggest I eat 2400 kcal a day (female, 77 kg and 168 cm)..excercise less than 2 hours a week to loose weight...and the diet is insanely protein packed...
I read the plan, tossed it away as I dont believe those numbers....
Then I reactivated my account in here, and have since had a small but consistent weightloss each week (1,5 kg in 4 weeks)...with a net kcal/day of about 1200-1300:) I eat my bread, my vegetables and some protein each day1 -
''You need to stop losing''. It seems to a lot of people that the best a former obese can or should do is being slightly overweight. I'm shooting for actually thin thank you very much.12

That I should sleep in a cold room to burn more calories.3

I was at the gym the other day when a man spontaneously came up to me and said wow, I can't believe you've got the squat balance right! Most women don't get it right, they're always wonky. And then proceeded to ask me if I want to learn how to do a front squat, lol no.5
-
Also once I didn't lose weight for about a week after I'd started running regularly for three weeks or so. My partner said it's because I'd been doing the same exercise for too long and wasn't burning any calories from it anymore...2

Let me give you the link to the best diet pills ever because you're losing weight but you can lose it faster.....3

What's the most annoying unwarranted advice that you've ever received about your diet?
Mine was today at the gym, when I mentioned that I would like to do a body analysis at the gym before my breakfast/workout. The owner said "oh no! you should always eat a snack before working out, and never eat carbohydrates after working out".
Never eat carbs after working out???? That is the BEST time to eat carbs! Aside from all the time that is...6 -

Peanut butter right before bed so your metabolism will spike while you are asleep.
I have used 5:2 IF; it's all about whether the pattern of eating is easy for you to stick to. It doesn't make you lose faster or slower with a given number of calories per week versus more even distribution. But I have had people argue with me both ways. Some people believe it kills your metabolism and you lose more slowly. Some people believe that it keeps your metabolism high because most days you eat more than you would given even distribution. The most annoying of the two are the people who believe it kills your metabolism. They would ask how I was losing the weight (because they noticed) and then tell me how I was doing it doesn't work. Huh???2 -
A man who was at least 70lbs more overweight than me tell me that if I wanted to lose weight, “you don’t want to eat protein like we do, you want to eat nothing but lettuce.” I’m still trying to figure out who he was talking about when he said we. Of course this is the same man who told me he doesn’t do squats or any other leg workouts because he thinks it hurts flexibility. Of course being obese doesn’t though.3

That I need to buy (insert whatever MLM shake company) and replace two meals a day if I really want to be healthy and lose weight.
That I must eat a big breakfast before working out in the morning or I will not burn enough calories. For the record, I prefer working out first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. My husband does the opposite...we are both in a calorie deficit and losing weight.
Apple cider vinegar with magically get me to my goal.
Protein shakes and pre-work out supplements are essential.

Because of my screenname I get a lot of bitching about how cardio is the devil and I need to do heavy lifting yesterday or I'm sabotaging myself. I've lost 30Ibs and increased in muscle mass.6
-
My husband made comments when I used my extra calories for treats. "It doesn't really work that way." When I told him it works EXACTLY that way he responded "yes, maybe. But it would work much faster if you didn't. " this at a Time when I was consistently losing 1.5-2 pounds a week7

Last week I was told that I should not run at my age. I'm 51.7
-
I'm sure I got some but honestly if advice is unwarranted I tend to just flat out ignore it since it is pointless and then I forget about it, so I don't remember.4
-
Uh oh; I am calling out another poster - people who tell me I can increase muscle mass while losing weight. With some very limited exceptions, that ain't happening...5

I was working out and some young guy who looked like he might have just started to work out (no muscle definition or mass, but had gloves a weight belt and every other "device" imaginable) came up to me and said "You shouldn't curl like that, you wont get the max benefit" I looked him up and down and said "Son if I wanted to look like you, I would work out like you" Put my headphones back in and continued to curl................the wrong way apparently33

"You look good now, you should stop losing weight" despite the fact I'm still overweight.
I mean, I understand them, I've been obese my whole life and seeing me get smaller is definitely a change, but I don't think it's their place to tell me when I should stop losing weight.11 -
