Just in case anyone wondered what I eat when I'm losing weight ...I eat close to the same things every day ...
10:30 am - 1 crackers & cheese snack
12:30 pm - 1 banana
2:00 pm - lunch. This is usually steamed veggies, chicken, and brown rice, but might vary a bit.
3:30 pm - 1 yogurt (150 grams)
4:30 pm - 2 kiwi fruit or a mandarin orange or an apple
6:00 pm - 100 grams of cottage cheese, cucumber slices, maybe carrot or radishes + 2-4 rye crackers with a bit of margarine
8:00 pm - dinner. This varies but is usually steamed veggies with something.
9:30 pm - 150-175 grams of yogurt
11:00 pm - toast with nutella and honey ... if I've got enough calories for them. If I haven't done enough exercise, this gets dropped.
And occasionally a few cheese crackers to end my day if I'm up past about 12:30 am ... if I've got the calories for them.
This probably doesn't appeal to everyone, but after some experimentation, it works for me.
And as I've mentioned a bit earlier, I need to get back on that again ... next week.

Thursday --
Today, I walked 14.5 km in total!! I tracked some of it on Strava, but the rest was commute and a walk down to the beach and back.
It was a lovely hot day and I had to get from the university to the middle of the city to pick up my ride packet ... and the bus is just so inconvenient.
Then when I got home, my feet were so hot (black shoes and socks all day), all I wanted to do was to get down to the beach and get in the water! So that's what my husband and I did ... a lovely wade at the beach, and then dinner at the restaurant right there.
So I've done half of the class portion of this course. Tomorrow I go for my last class this week ... thank goodness. I am looking forward to a short break this weekend ... it's a lot of information in a short amount of time! And then I've got Monday - Wednesday next week. Then it's back to work, but I've got a project for this class to do. Apparently we're supposed to find out about this project tomorrow, I think.

doggie in my lap an trying to type.. going down to feed DFIL and then go get my dad and take him to the town hall and get a medical POA notarized .. with what is going on, and he told me he got a call and that the ,mass is bengin(sp) so he calls me last night with questions I cant answer, and they wont give me answers at his Dr because of Hippa , so hence the Medical POA.
my SIL said get copy of pathology report, bring it to her and she will be able to put it in laymans terms for dad .
My girlfriend Bev and I are going out to dinner tonight, we are both the same age, dealing with ailing parents and need a break.. hopefully tomorrow I can go out with Doris..9 -
Allie - Sending my best wishes across the pond. So frustrating and tiring for you. Yes, do go out and have some fun.
Lisa - You told your daughter that you would be there for her next posting and that was a great load off her mind, A great decision. After that I should make it clear now that you are your own masters. You are not responsible for her choices.
I'm very bad with uncertainty, so I always need everyone to know exactly where we stand and what our commitments are to each other. I'm like that with people visiting and everything - need to be clear on ETAS and leaving times so I can plan. I know I'm a bit of a control freak, but I try to be polite about it!
One of the problems about this possible move to Hove is that we can't hurry it up and are in the market's hands. I am trying to be philosophical about it all. No bites yet this year.

Heather - sending our luck with the warehouse your way... might take a little time to get across that big pond in the way, though. Seriously, comPLETEly understand your struggle with having your lives in other people's hands. It's not a place where we control freaks are comfortable. And I think you've got a good point, that we commit to her deployment and no further. We do need our lives, and everyone survived more than once with only one parent available. The Army will usually make it possible for only one to be deployed at a time, but the reality is that they transferred into a deployable unit, though in different sections, when they came to Fort Bragg. It comes with drawbacks.
All that said, I'm happy for the moment. Ran yesterday and today, first time it's been warm enough to deal with the temps--and I still start out in a hooded sweatshirt, and tie it around my waist about halfway through. A mile and a half in longer than I care to admit, but slight improvements day-to-day. Let's see how long I can keep it up.
Love y'all!

The reason my dental cleanings are so frequent and so brutal is that I still have my wisdom teeth and that's where the brutal part of the cleaning happens. I am adamant about keeping all my body parts so the professional cleaning is the price I pay.
Rye, I have ways of being active that are fun for me so I don't feel resentful about them. Also I pair them with fun things (audio book while walking, TV while riding my exercise bike) Keep looking for the fun things. I write in my gratitude journal every morning that I am grateful for mobility, because without it, I wouldn't be able to be active and burn extra calories.
Barbie5 -
Barbie Wow! You still have your wisdom teeth! That is amazing! No wonder you have a tough time at the dentist and have to go so frequently.
Lisa You are giving your daughter & her family an enormous gift by being there to help with the grandchildren. Like any gift, you get to decide where it ends. Some things you have said in other posts makes me think your daughter is a lot like you, so she gets it. You just have to give her quite a bit of lead time so she can arrange other options for child care when you leave, and get her heartstrings in order...

Good morning all! Happy Thursday! I have been in a bit of a funk the past few days, since starting back to work with the kids. Maybe I am just tired and still getting used to the earlier/busier schedule after two weeks off. I spent last night organizing my thoughts. Putting on paper the things I want/need to do to empty the chaos in my brain. My weight loss has pretty much stagnated at 235. I am sure the holiday eating and drinking are part of the blame. SO...I have decided to get back on the stricter high protein plan that I was on two years ago. I am putting a sample day in writing below:
5:30am non fat greek yogurt and 1/2 cup strawberries, coffee with cream (no sugar)
9:00 protein powder, unsweetened almond milk and half an apple
12:30 4 oz chicken breast, green salad (2 cups), either v&o or lemon juice and garlic dressing, cucumber (1/2 cup diced)
3:30 1 cup 4% cottage cheese, carrot stix or celery stix (one carrot or stalk)
6:30 4 oz chicken breast, broccoli (a cup or more), whole grain rice, pasta, or two oz potato
I will be walking on the treadmill in the evening, to start, mainly to keep me from sitting on the couch and eating. As soon as exercise becomes a regular part of my day again, I will move it to the early morning, before 5:30.
I can do this. Aiming for Onederland by June 1.
I will post later on more things on my brain. Love the pic of Edie and Bea! Heather

Just finished day 2 week 2 of c25k. :drinker: It's ridiculous how happy it makes me. My dodgy knee was a bit grumpy, but it didn't let me down.
I've discovered that most of my downloaded tracks fit perfectly with my walking pace, but not with my shuffle/run. So I'm just playing any fun, upbeat music , including my dancing play list. Makes me smile!
On to make IP soup from the IP Indian cookbook. Tomato and Coconut. My DSIL said it was one of the best soups she'd ever had! It's for my son tomorrow. Then I'm going to make some choc/nut/raisin drop things from the newspaper that we can have when we get back from the pub instead of dessert. I will have half of one of DH's.

Reading all the posts here I feel lucky - I do the Eat more to Lose weight plan with higher protein and based on Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) - 15% and my calories to lose are 1800 a day (plus I get to eat back exercise calories. Its a good thing to be 5'8" I suppose! That and I am interested in losing weight sustainably, which I have not ever done in the past (I lose it then it comes back when I return to eating normally), this time I am eating normally but just less and upped my protein by a ton to help with energy and satiation. I do 25-30% protein a day (or I aim for that anyhow). 40/30/30 is my ideal goal C/F/P.
I am on the finishing end of a really bad cold right now, so I am feeling very out of sync and not working out much this week because I can't breathe! Plus eating is a chore because everything good for me doesn't taste right - weird how junk food tastes different but still good LOL.

Happy Thursday!
Machka - you mentioned you have asked for a bone density scan and your docs say you are too young. That type of thinking frustrates me. Did they never hear of a baseline? And that test is so simple! Up on the table, a couple quick zaps with very low X-rays, the computer reads it and spits out a report. I'd keep inquiring about it, if you have any older relatives with broken bones perhaps that would speed it up for you.
Insurance companies here in the US have a list of preventative tests they recommend and often pay for. I think they need to add Vitamin D if they haven't already, especially for those of us who live in areas that don't get a lot of sun. By some stroke of luck I happened onto an OB/GYN about 15-20 years ago who was getting into Functional Medicine and as part of my yearly exam, did the Vitamin blood tests - they can be expensive and insurance didn't pay, but she had a good deal with a lab. I came back low on Vitamin D and B12 and have been taking 5000 IU of D3 ever since plus B12 supplements.
Our new doc also has access to an inexpensive lab so we pay a low out of pocket every few years to make sure we're in the healthy range.
Thanks to that doc we've been ahead of the game on for a while on cancer prevention and bone health.
Sorry for the epistle, lol.
Barbie - I think that is so neat you have a friend you can trade rides/errands with. Very important and a load off Jake's mind for sure. Hope the tests on his back problem show it's something easily remedied!
Rye - in looking at your stats, I think you did very well in 2017. It may take some tweaking but you'll find the calories and exercise that work for you doing maintenance. Hang in there as best you can, perhaps when the days get longer things will look up. And with all the extra hours you've been working, I would think that's a bit fatiguing and stressful. (((HUGS))))
Joyce - sorry to hear about your hot lips! I give you a lot of credit for getting out and attending your choir practice despite the weather and physical problems you've encountered recently.
Lisa - great topic on your blog this morning and of course you sharing your thoughts here. Dh and I still have twinges of wanderlust and what is hampering us now are his health issues. That's huge. Lots of good comments here - your mentioning it takes many of us down memory lane. It sounds like wherever you end up, you'll be within driving distance of DD and the grands even if they aren't in the same house or same town for that matter.
Heather - loved the photo of Edie and Bea. How is Jessamy doing after that hernia surgery? Is she totally recovered now?
KJ - your high-protein plan looks delicious. I bet you'll have no problem losing, especially with how active you are. Toting those little ones at times has to be some major strength training in addition to your treadmill!
One of my BFF's is going back to Weight Watchers today. I credit WW with helping to bring my weight back in line for many years and I think they do keep improving their model... I was on it online a couple years ago, and they were moving it to low-sugar. I liked it because they counted the calories for me and I was able to plug in foods I normally thought were "forbidden".
I dropped them and switched to MFP because of this community, the exorbitant price they were now charging, and their dodgy website/logging mechanism which didn't handle PC's well. And they no longer had a meeting handy where I could weigh in when I was tied to the scale.
But I can't fault the education I got from them regarding eating healthy, meal planning, etc. and am glad I stuck with them as long as I did.
Welcome newbies - I enjoy reading your stories. We're here to listen and help if we can.
On that note, I better get moving.

Hi, I'm Sharron (from Washington DC area - Northern VA)
I've been gone from mfp for awhile. My gym has an APB out for me. I'm 53 (soon to be 54). I've got 50 lbs to lose. I bowl. I'm a youth leader in my church. I play keyboard for the youth band (which is awesome that I can do this in my old age). Looking for more mfp friends for encouragement.
I'm toying with the idea of hiking the Appalachian trail 2193 miles. Am I a hiker? No Do I have bad knees? yes
I'll probably do a section hike through the Virginia part this Spring or Fall to either solidify or dismiss this urging.12 -
This thread demonstrates so well that there is no one fits all way of eating. Everyone has to figure out what works best for them.
At 4’11” to lose weight I need to limit calories to 800-1000 a day and not eat back exercise calories (not that I have been consistent with exercise). Maintenance might be 1200 calories. I have not yet hit my goal weight and have been on the journey since Sept 2016. I was at my highest weight at 175 and in a size 14.
I recently had a DEXA scan to determine body composition. At 119 lbs body fat was 36%. My goal is to be 25-30%. Goal weight would be 103-109. My focus now is to build muscle with consistent exercise as well as continue my way of eating which is Keto. (Also learned that bone density is excellent.) I have read that there is a psychological advantage to attaining your goal weight in that you will try harder to stay there.
I love sweets and that is always what contributes to my weight gain. I am learning to make homemade Keto treats (occasionally, not daily). I have gone off plan and overindulged in sweets. The difference is that I have gotten back on plan the next meal instead of chucking the entire plan for weeks or months or years. The advantage for me of the Keto diet is that cravings for sweets are eliminated.
I have used upcoming occasions as short term motivation to keep on plan. The cruise in Feb is serving as my current motivation.
I am working out with the Wii now, because I have fun with it.

Calories Thanks for the encouragement. I did do well last year and the diet and exercise have paid off. But seeing a maintenance calorie allowance of 1250 just made me feel like I have a chronic illness that to keep under control will take many hours of unpleasant exercise a week and a strictly curbed diet. Forever. Not a happy making realization.
It does suck to be short. I don’t think 2 inches or 4 inches height difference should translate to 20 to 35% less calories. But it does. I must remember to be grateful I’m not even shorter.
Hula-Hoop I think Michelle you were the one who warned me about the bruises. I’m so glad you did! I bruise easily and on my very pale skin, obviously and quite colourfully! And this causes my DH no end of dismay, especially as I rarely remember the point of injury. This time I was able to warn him ahead of time. When he saw the bruises his eyes twinkled and he said” looks like the hula hoop won this round, huh?”
What a great core workout the Hula Hoop is Tho! I never ever did it until a few days ago (didn’t have one in childhood). I could only keep it up for 55 seconds max so I can tell (also from the severe DOMS in my abdomen) I’m going to need Lots of practice. I do not have a big house tho and there is a area two square feet wide in which I must be planted or the hoop will cause major wreckage - lol.
Exercise I’ll keep doing it- the close to constant pain alternative (not to mention that I don’t even want to imagine having even less calories!) is just not an option. And I want strong bones, muscles, heart. I don’t even hate swimming - but yeah, I’d rather sit and read a book no contest. Audio books are too dang slow and only frustrate me, so I listen to music. I’m even getting tired of that. I’m really happy but also envious of you all who enjoy physical activity. I’ve not found any that are not simply chores I have to do. Also, my disabilities severely limit my choices anyhow. So, I have tried to pick the least unpleasant ones and leave it at that.

I got a text at 6:30 AM. “B” who is on vacation nest week opened the facility but she thinks she has strep throat and can I come in to reliever her. ( that would mean working from when I got there to 12:30 then again at 4:00 to 8:00pm. And I live a 35 minute walk from work, so it would not really be worth it to go home in that interim. Good news is that I slept through that text. Problem solved ( she got “D” to come in). Bad news is I just know I am going to be asked to fill in tomorrow or Saturday.
Ugh got to face that now. The weekly work conference call starts in 30 minutes ( I can call in from home)
Looking for my happy face here in Texas,

Hey Sharon, Welcome to the group! I think it would be amazing to hike the AT!!!!
NYKAREN2 -
I am officially trying to find my maintenance calories. In 2017 I was tracking for approximately 39 weeks. I lost 40 pounds (but that includes the start a diet woosh of 12 pounds). MFP tells me I averaged 1197 calories. This is very discouraging since my exercising isn’t represented there (— no additional calories no matter what my weekly exercise regime). These numbers tell me that I can eat about 1250 calories a day + something (considerably less than Apple Watch estimates) for exercise.
These pitiful numbers ( sorry there is no way for me to be satisfied on 1250 calories) are one of the reasons I am trying the fast this week. At these calorie rates I can never have a gyro or serving if my husband’s King Ranch Caserole ever again unless I eat nothing else at all that day. Grump Grump. Yeah I’ll probably get a couple hundred extra calories a day from exercising but My average week is walk 5-10 miles, swim 2-3 miles, strength 2x a week, HIIT 3x a week and some irregular miscellaneous rebounder, hula hoop and dance. That is still a pittance caloriewise for all that. And I don’t see any increase in that because frankly I hate it all. If my health didn’t demand it I wouldn’t be doing any of it. Grump Grump.
Ah well. This is the hand I’ve been dealt and have to make the best I can. Sorry folk, I’m probably just tired.
Everyone take care
Rye
I am with you, sister. I have to admit that I do get a little depressed about it, at times, but I can't change it, so it is what it is. Being more active does help, but really, you can only do so much, and I burn only about 70 calories for every mile walked. That's like a small apple.

Pip: Love the photo of your dog and her teddy bear.
Becca: Love the Simple reminder to give your best. I love soup, too. Yours sounds interesting & tasty.
M in OZ: I had a bone density test several years ago after I fell on black ice and broke a wrist bone. It showed that I had osteopenia-a condition where the bones get thinner but not to the "osteoporosis" level. Since then I broke the other wrist in a fall & a finger when I wrapped a horse lead rope around it and the horse took off bucking. My new doctor decided I needed a second bone density test. I had amazing results. My bone density actually improved and is now better than it was at the first test. I didn't think that was even possible. Both wrists tend to ache in certain weather conditions. I attribute the improvement to the combination of medicine and weight bearing exercise.
Janetr: I haven't seen a post from Sue in WA lately either. I'm pretty sure I saw posts from her in December. :flowerforyou:
j953071: Welcome to a great group of supportive women. Post often to give and get support.
Lisa: When I was teaching I had a student whose mom was in the army. My student was living with her maternal grandmother. There was also a much younger brother by a different father, and I think the brother was with his dad. Life can be challenging for kids with two military parents. I am sure that you are a blessing in the lives of your daughter and grandchildren.
Heather: It never occurred to me that short people might have any more or less trouble losing weight than tall people. I know that physical challenges occur for everyone and disciplined eating and drinking is the key to good health. :flowerforyou:
Barbie: You are fortunate to have your wisdom teeth. I didn't have room for them in my mouth and they were removed more than twenty years ago. I haven't missed them. :flowerforyou:
sjcook23: You've found a good group of supportive women. Welcome!
Cathy in Arlington: Great job with your health! Your photos prove how well you are doing. :flowerforyou:
Yoga today and we're meeting a prospective dog sitter for our upcoming trip to see kids and grandkids. I didn't go to the horse enthusiast meeting due to fatigue yesterday. I'm still experiencing low energy. I suspect my body is fighting off a virus & that is why. I'm not actually sick--just tired.

Cathy - you are looking fantastic! And only 10 lbs to go! Of course, that's the hardest and longest ten pounds (mine took me ages), but you have to keep reminding yourself you already look great!
This is a constant struggle for the rest of our lives. No parole for good behaviour. Luckily, after many years of saying I hated exercise, I now find I quite enjoy it and feel very cheated when I can't do it because of other commitments. I hope my son and girlfriend will be up to at least a walk tomorrow, but our lanes are rather waterlogged. I'm running/walking to the big puddles and back again.
Lanette - Haven't heard how she is doing. I'm assuming no news is good news.
