WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2018

I couldn't do my c25k today, which I've been looking forward to, as the lanes are under water! So I pedalled another 30 calories on my recumbent bike and we went out to the shops after lunch to spend our £5 off voucher. I bought two superior looking fillet steaks to have on Valentine's Day. Plus a few other bits. We never go out on that day because of the hike in prices. Plus I rarely eat steak, so it is a real treat. They are safely in the freezer. I also found a card for DH while he was in the bigger shop.
I wanted him to pick up a haggis while we were there, but they only had mini ones. I want a BIG one, which will be satisfying to stab. I've just rung our local butcher and left a message for them. By the time I'd walked round the big store a few times and back and forth to the parking I reckon I did burn the missing 70 calories.

Weigh in day today. I was shocked to see I lost 5 pounds! I didn’t believe the scale so had DH get on it. His was right. I tried it a couple more times just to make sure. I’ll take it! I know it will slow down but I hope it keeps going in that direction. The biggest change was a small one. I started walking more every day. My goal is 10 to 50 minutes each day to average 30 minutes every day. I do 10 to 20 minutes walks a couple times a day. That plus WW to monitor my food intake seems to be working for me.
Each person has to find what is right for them. But by us posting our success helps others to find what might work for them.

Barbie: Glad you enjoyed your anniversary.
Sharon: That cake is lovely and amazing. Are you sure Harmony just turned 6? She is beautiful.
Guess we all have something about ourselves that we hated. I had severe acne starting at age 10. It covered my face, chest, back, and arms. When I went to Girl Scout Camp, a swimmer asked me if I had had small pox. I suffered through this until I had a hysterectomy at age 39. Then it finally cleared up. The strange thing is that I have no scars at all on my face. And, the ones on my back are finally barely recognizable. Parents kept me going to dr’s for years so that probably helped. I spent most of my teen years eating no fats, etc. That and extreme sun bathing was supposed to help.
So, that is my story!

May I join you? I’m 55 and a little discouraged with the progress I’m making. I’m up a couple pounds but most likely because of over exercise. Saturday I went to my 1.5 hr yoga class, then we went to the beach and kayaked in the harbor and then rode our bikes... it was a full day of exercise and was so sore I could hardly wiggle. Yesterday I walked 4 miles. I’m up 2 lbs but am hoping it’s only from over exercise and water weight gain. All I want to do is curl into a ball, fast, and drink coffee which won’t help. Lol I am sore.
Reading through posts and need some support and encouragement. I decided last year to go to a weight loss doctor although all she did was give me a diet, tell me to track on my fitness pal and do labs... (waiting for results when I see her next feb 1) my first day seeing her was December 22. Since then I’m down 5 lbs total... was 7 but like I said up 2 due to over exercise.
Last summer I was at my all time high 237.5 so altogether down 15 but I’ve been very up and down due to stress, starting a new job and having a second part time job. I have to go back to college starting the end of the month to get a credential (school nurse). I had gotten to 215 but currently I’m at 222.5... start stop start stop...
What I enjoy is yoga 3 times a week and walking. Goal:yoga 3 times a week, walk 30 min a day average every day. Weekly 4 mile walk... hopefully that will get easier as wt comes off and I get stronger. I also do a little bit of dance (folk) once a week.
Just aiming for consistency and trying to avoid extremism which I’m prone to. Goal for today: (glorious holiday) 1.short walk for 30 min to get loosened up.2. Study, start my reading, write my paper, prepare for work tomorrow 3. Eat 1300 cal.4. Go to my dance class.
Anyways I read through some of your posts and feel like I’d fit in here w the over 50 group. I can sure tell weight loss is terribly difficult at this age.10 -
Margaret: I love your fortune cookie quotation, "The purpose of argument should not be victory, but progress"
Lenora: I think a person's home should reflect their interests and personality. I've never used the services of a "decorator." I might consider it if I was trying to sell my home and stage it to appeal to buyers. :flowerforyou:
Lisa: What channel/network is having the Broken Brain docuseries? I am interested.
Barbara the Southern Oregon Coastie: I fell on black ice in a shady spot and broke one wrist & a year or two later fell on ice that was hidden underneath snow and broke the other. I had a bone density test that showed osteopenia & decided that I'd rather take meds than become crippled by fragile bones. I am happy with my choices and thrilled to have improved my bone density. The fosamax PLUS weight bearing exercise enabled me to improve my bone density. I'm sure that Barbie's dancing is also great for her bones. My next door neighbor has broken two bones in the past six months. I don't know whether she's taking bone density medicine at this point, but I told her guy about my experiences. Two falls with broken bones in less than six moths waves a red flag in my mind.
Viv: I don't try to comment on every post anymore. Pitch in when you feel that you have something to say. I'm glad you're back. :flowerforyou:
Sharon: The cake is fabulous! I'm sure you helped Harmony feel special on her birthday.
Patceoh: Thanks for the information about bacteria coming into the house on shoes.
Rita: Congrats on the loss!!!
megglesroad: I credit yoga & this group on myfitnesspal with saving my health. Both have been a huge blessings for me. welcome to a great group of supportive women.
Yoga today! Yay!!! Happy MLK Day. The Reverend King was a great man who changed the world because he had the dream of equality and the grace and courage to speak out in positive ways.

Katla - regarding Broken Brain, check it out here: www.brokenbrain.com It is a docuseries streaming on the internet, at least that's how I'll watch it- I don't believe it's on TV.
Rita - good for you! I would love to walk with you in the desert for a bit. I need sun!!
Sharon - Harmony's cake is fabulous. She's a sweetie. I loved your description of the mountains - they have to be breathtaking.

Rita ... fantastic! It seems to me that you are much happier than in the past ... RVing obviously suits you!
Sharon ... loved the cake photo and Harmony looks like she was having a great day!
Shoes in the House ... This germaphobe has had to ignore all information about the germs that travel in on our shoes. As I've shared before, my OS is in a motorized wheelchair. It's like having a golf cart drive into your home ... I don't want to think about it
Since meal planning has been an issue lately, I'm working at making some things for the freezer that I eat regular ... cabbage soup, steel cut oats and crustless quiche to start.
A dreary day today and I'm definitely under the weather with this cold, but since I don't have someone babying my every minute (unlike my husband who you would've thought was dying from his cold), I'm moving along.
Beth near Buffalo6 -
Meggie welcome.
Katla I looked up The Broken Brain on Google. You can watch it for free. I watched episode 1 which was more of an overview and testimonials. Their approach is called functional medicine which is a whole person approach. I plan to watch episode 2 today on the gut. There are a total of 8 episodes.2 -
Here in New Zealand it is considered very bad manners to wear shoes inside. They are left at the door. You will often see boots left outside shop doors. Gumboots (black rubber boots) are very common here for all us country folk who wade around in mud all winter and spring and they are easy to slip off by the door before you go inside. Having an enclosed porch on the house where you keep all your boots and coats is the norm.
I've never heard of "overexercise" leading to weight gain, unless it is triggering out of control appetite. For me it's always eating that leads to weight gain, or hormones that make me retain water. I don't believe in the calorie in calorie out theory. I believe in the Hormones and Metabolism theory as well as homeostasis. I have experimented with keto but have decided it is not for me. I do fast although there are times I can eat NOTHING and not lose an ounce. I think what works best for me is to boost my metabolism so that it is constantly burning more calories even when I'm sitting at my desk. If I do short bursts of exercise constantly throughout the day, I keep bumping up my heart rate. There are also foods that raise your metabolism like cinnamon and hot peppers. I would far rather focus on moving more than eating less. But I know that I have to do both to see a big difference in my weight. I like to focus on building my muscle, as I know that makes my metabolism burn more calories, makes my body tighter and stronger and protects my back. I also think it's really important to keep my hormone levels up and I take Go-Meno free, an herbal combo, as well as Dong Quai and a progesterone cream and drink organic soy milk and add rosemary to my foods. And take turmeric. Fasting is so good for you on so many levels that I make sure I do that often, just to give my body a chance to clear out toxins.
A lot of the exercise I do is just built into my life on a farm with animals to feed, horses to ride and train and groom, a big garden to weed, lots of wheelbarrow jobs (putting down shellrock onto paths and to stop weeds from growing, and cleaning manure out of paddocks and taking heavy bags of grain uphill to the barn!) carrying water buckets, cutting back overgrown bushes, planting new areas, wheelbarrowing prunings and weeds to the compost pile at the far end of the garden. Then there is the bee keeping and moving heavy boxes and carrying frames from the back paddocks up to my queen making room. I am never at a loss for a practical reason to move my body. And on top of that I love to hike in the forest with my dogs, or go for a run and get those endorphins pumping through my body. I love feeling like I am on Happy Fire.
If i lived in the city, worked in an office 9 to 5 and had no animals or garden I would probably be as big as a house because I would feel so stressed out if I couldn't move lots, and I am a stress eater. My comfort foods are chocolate, icecream, milkshakes and wine. (I do work in an office three days a week but even there I take breaks and walk down to the bank and post office, or park and walk in and out to my car, and take a dog with me so I can take it for a walk the minute I'm done with the accounts.)
Got a full day planned. to you all, Wendy5 -
Hi just found your forum. Im turning 50 next week.....and Im at my all time high weight. back in 2004 I lost 42 lbs due to Curves and walking. In the past several years it crept back on and more. Curves closed a long time ago. I do Zumba twice a week with a friend of mine. I used to walk every day with my dog, first it was 4 miles then it was 2....now I havent walked since Thanksgiving. It is very cold where I am, a high of 13 today. The cold never used to bother me but now it does and the lack of sunlight too. The Dr put me on prozac and between that and cold I hardly feel like moving! Any encouragement and information is welcome. Just starting over today on fitnesspal/fitbit.9

Welcome Meggie and Cinnamon!
Keep checking in with us, daily if possible, and you will find a way to keep the weight off for good. Slow but sure is the way to go, so you end up making permanent changes in your life style and mindset. Weight gain is a very complicated subject, as much in the head and our social surroundings as anything else. We all need the support of like minded people and we need to change the way we view food for ever. Unfortunately, in the UK and the US, most people have a very unhealthy relationship with food.
Please can all the newbies sign their post every time with the name they would like to be called and a general location. That helps everyone keep track of who is who.
Yoga tomorrow , then I hope I will be able to run in the afternoon, weather permitting.
My Portsmouth friend is passing through on Wednesday on her way back up North, so we are meeting up for lunch at the slightly better pub, a very short car journey away.
My cancer friend had her port put in today and her second chemo. The WhatsApp group posted a picture. I can't do any of the next few chemos, but I will be seeing her end of next week at the SingalongaSoundofMusic. It's her 64th birthday this week.

Beth I’m not a fan of meal planning at all, makes me feel too restricted. However I am a huge fan of cooking BiG meals, and soups, pot roasts and stews and freezing individual portions. My freezer is currently quite depleted but even so there are 5 different meals in there I can choose from.
I would go so far to say my weight loss success and weight maintenance would have been a failure without my frozen meals. When I want a meal, I often want it NOW and not every meal will suffice to quell my taste buds. Quick, nutritious, low calorie and varied meals in my freezer save me from the fast food joints. Well, and fresh fruit to snack on.
Heather I’m still “jelly” about that sing along. It sounds like a simply fantastic way to spend an evening. (“Jelly” according to my young niece is a friendly term for being happy and jealous of a friend).
My mother in law is having another pain control surgical procedure Wednesday. Her osteoporosis and spinal deterioration are certainly impetus to keep up with the swimming and weights. (The verdict is still out on the hula-hoop - kinda fun but OW OW OW!). I’ll be spending the day with her because they want someone to be with her no less than 12 hours afterwards. I should pick out a good movie for us to watch- maybe Down with Love or De-Lovely. No violence,
Sex, or politics. Hmm, maybe both of those are actually too controversial. She is VERY conservative- socially and politically and I need to make sure not to press any buttons, hers OR mine - lol. Unfortunately we watched the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice together already.
A cold and wet weather front moving in this afternoon/ evening so I’m off to work a tad early so I finish walking there before it hits. The walking is good for me, but on days like today I wish I could drive so I’d have the option.
And for anyone keeping track, our feral stray cat in the backyard ‘Sweetheart’ has started to vocalize with us. John seems to get a welcome and hurry up ‘hello’ meow as well as a thank you meow. I get a regal ‘you are dismissed’ meow after I feed him. LOL.

Happy Monday! MLK day! Read a very short book to the kids- board book style. (This is Martin. He is kind. He wants every one to be kind to each other. etc...) We made doves for craft. Kind of a hard day to incorporate into a craft and activity for the mind of a two year old. But they get the gist. Be kind to every one and treat every one the same/way you want to be treated. Seems simple when explaining it to a two year old. Hard to believe there ever were/ are people that struggle to understand the concept.
Comfort foods - When I am feeling low, I will always turn to something warm and creamy. Pasta? Okay? Something cheesy? Sounds wonderful! Now stress eating is a whole different monster for me. That is where the chips come in. And the eating without thinking. Stress brain. THAT'S the thing that will do me in. Which is why I have gone back to strict menu following. No creamy dressings. No sugar. No alcohol. No eating out. I will have to stick to it for at least six weeks before I can allow a "treat". Now, I know many of you don't like using that word. But eating out, is a treat for me. Mainly because I don't have to cook or think about "what to make". If my DH or DYS would do the cooking once in a while, I would not feel the need to eat out. But...that is not the world I live in . Anyway...I can do this. I will hang onto all of the advice and words of wisdom from all of my "loser" friends (and I use that term with MUCH respect)!
I take my shoes off when I go to other people's homes; BUT when I am at home, I wear my own shoes in the house. My feet and ankles hurt so bad when I go barefoot or stocking feet, so the shoes stay on. I am of two minds on the germ thing. Yes, germs are icky. Please wash your hands after using the restroom or sneezing/coughing, eating, etc. BUT...I have noticed an increase in sick kids, allergies, rashes, etc. with the introduction of antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers, sanitizing wipes, and the basic bubble wrapping of our population. They are now publishing articles telling you to let your kid eat some dirt, play in the mud, taste the mud pie, share a spoon, cup with a healthy friend/relative, eat your boogers (truly, they have found benefit in that little nose "nugget"). Anyway, I don't MAKE people take their shoes off when they come in any more. The kids, yes, because I have seen what they walk through and don't even notice. But most adults, through a lifetime of habit, tend to watch where they step. Most take their shoes off anyway.
All of our snow melted last week except for about a foot high snowbank along the driveway and roads. But it has gotten cold again, and it has been snowing for over 24 hours non stop. We have about another 8 inches already! Yipee! Nice clean white snow!
Ooooh Lanette- Back in the beginning of 2015, I read a book that my daughter left here, Revolutions in World Missions and it just struck a very loud chord in my soul. How absolutely greedy, and wasteful I was with my food and overeating, when there truly were people going with a bowl of rice/watery broth (or less) every day. And many of them were expected to work, HARD back breaking work with this little bit of nutrition. Anyway, I finished the book just as lent was approaching. I have never been one to give up anything for Lent, because I was not brought up that way and it just seemed shallow to give up Starbucks or sodas or something that doesn't make you "feel" the pain. That year, I decided to dedicate Sunday as a day of mindful eating. Rules: From 7pm Saturday night to 6pm Sunday night I would allow myself 1 cup of broth, 1 cup of cooked rice, water, tea, 2 cups of black coffee. It really kept me mindful all week and kept my view on food and my relationship with it, constantly in the forefront of my mind. Because Lent is 40 days. I did this for 40 Sundays. It took me all of the way to the Sunday before Thanksgiving. That Thanksgiving, was as if a spotlight was shown on my home and table and I really could appreciate the absolute abundance that I have. lol Sorry, this is much longer and seems very dramatic, but it truly was a game changer for me.

Yep ... happens to me after every long bicycle ride. Up 1-2 kg until about Wednesday ... then pee like a horse all day. And Thursday I 'm back to normal.
It has happened after my run on Sunday too.
But it doesn't happen after short or light amounts of exercise.
It's very common. I frequent cycling forums and it's talked about there. I've also heard bodybuilders talk about it.

That's good to know. I don't think I get too much inflammation from my large amounts of exercise maybe because i take turmeric daily and maybe because my body is just used to being used all the time. Use it or lose it. Wendy3

Greetings all! My weigh in this morning did not go my way. I was up 2.8 lbs from Friday. I know I didn't eat enough to gain 2.8 lbs, heck, I didn't eat enough to gain at all. I KNOW it is water. Now, tell my psyche that. It is amazing how much control the scale has over me. It didn't send me into a meltdown or anything, but it did momentarily make my mood plummet. That is one of the things I'm trying to work on, not letting the upward blips affect my mood. Weirdly, if I have eaten a bunch of crap and it goes up (like NYE), it doesn't bother me in the least. I know what happened and it drops back off relatively quickly. When I haven't done anything "wrong" and it goes up, it messes with my head.
That's all I've got for now. Stay warm and safe for those of us in the ice storm warning area.....you would think the end of the world was coming here in the Austin area. Luckily I work from home so it won't matter to me one way or the other.

If I'm really fit it doesn't happen until I do something like cycle a double century (320 km /200 miles). If I'm less fit it might happen after a 100 km (60 mile) ride. And even less fit it might happen after something as short as a 50 km (30 mile) ride.
It's one of the ways I can determine my fitness level.
Or sometimes it will happen if I do something different like go for a strenuous 12 km hike or run 10 km or put in a particularly heavy weights workout.
But it doesn't happen after just ordinary every day stuff.
I'll also add that hydration and electrolytes play a part in this too. Get the balance right and a person might only gain a very small amount after long and strenuous exercise. Get it wrong and you can see some wild fluctuations.
Other factors like heat and sunburn can play a part too.

Shoes My family and my in-laws family are shoes on in the home families. My mother would probably had rather died in a puddle of shame than ask a guest to remove their shoes.
I wear shoes from the moment I exit the bed in the morning. I try to change them up and wear different pairs, but slippers dont have arch support and the floors of a pier and beam home are COLD. I would never go barefoot more than the one or two steps (from the bath tub to my towel to my shoes).
Once or twice I’ve been in a home where I was asked to remove my shoes. I don’t think I’d voluntarily go back. I do not frequent Japanese restaurants that require shoes off for the same reason. Nothing against shoes off homes or places, they very well might be more sanitary. But I am certainly not comfortable taking my shoes off except when I’m swimming, sleeping or bathing. I even have water shoes to use in the pool for aqua classes- lol.5 -
Thanks for all the congrats. And yes, I am much happier now than I was in the past.

Sharon, Harmony is such a sweet looking girl! And that cake!! Holy moly, your daughter is so talented!
Terry, laughed out loud about your hubby thinking what a great *kitten*, while you were concerned. He's definitely a keeper!
Lisa, Corey is also a keeper, so glad you dumped the other one and found this one!
I do so enjoy reading all the posts, nice to read about others lives, tricks and strategies. Also nice to hear the issues too, reminds me that I'm not the only one that has to deal with bumpy roads sometimes!
Wendy, great words of wisdom there! The world would be a much better place if we all focused on treating people how we like to be treated instead of concerning ourselves with how people look.
Today has been a good day. Got to the gym, did some time on the elliptical trainer then did a TRX class. The regular trainer has been away sick for two weeks now. Sure hope she is better soon, for two reasons. One, she's an awesome trainer and two, she's an awesome person and is quite an inspiration to me when it comes to staying fit. She's 73 and does stuff I couldn't do at 23!! Mind you I wasn't in great shape then, but still.... Definitely want to keep working out and staying active - gotta use it so I don't lose it! Breakfast and lunch were good, lo cal meals and dinner is going to be stirfried chicken with veggies and some quinoa. Yummy!
Hope everyone has a good one!

Hi Gals,
So I’ve been reading and adding to my post, but not posting it, don’t know why… finally here it is…
Lisa – sometimes I wonder if things not in our “normal” for you living looking forward, is not an opportunity to grow… and the memories you are building for the little ones and the peace you are giving to both DD and DSIL knowing you are there is a legacy that only could be left by you doing this.
Allie – great job on getting the poa!!!
Katiebug – I hate it when I get dates confused…
Rye – picture one you look great, picture two you still look great! A little flaw makes you human, not disfigured!!!
Comfort/snack-stress foods … my comfort food is my mom’s homemade marinara with meatballs on pasta, I do it more often on spaghetti squash now… and my snack food is sweets or sweet cocktails
Sharon – that cake is amazing!
Shoes - I wear my shoes in the house, am happy to take them off if others request it, but as I need arch supports and my feet get cold easy, if I am going some where that I know I have to take my shoes off I slip some slipper socks in my purse, doesn’t give me support but at least I’m not cold.
I’m feeling sorry for my Mom, she’s almost 89 and in the last 2 years many of her friends have passed away and this weekend her best friend passed, she has always had friends a few years older, which seems like no big deal until you are 89 and they are 93 - - This was her bridge buddy, they played together in 2 groups of ladies, and now she has to find a new partner, she is talking about giving it up; I am encouraging her to not give up both…one seems to be a nicer group than the other.

Shoes in the house, my mom had inside shoes and outside shoes. We usually take our shoes off, but if I'm bringing stuff in from the car I will keep them on for that. We do have a garage, with a rug in front of the inside door, so I do wipe my feet, but when the last of the stuff is in, it's off with the shoes and on with the slippers. I find my slippers much more comfortable than shoes!3

I’ve always been self conscious of my large butt so when I got up to use the restroom at the movies I had to scoot past the seats to get out. My only thought was how big my butt must look and that I probably wouldn’t have a second date. Obviously we did have that second date. After we had been together for a number of years we were talking about that first date and I shared how I felt when I got up to go to the bathroom. My DH said that was funny as he was thinking “what a great looking *kitten*”. Taught me to never think you know what others are thinking.

Ha! Terry - When I saw my now-ex-husband for the first time, I was about a size 10, and honestly the hottest I ever was, before or since. I asked him at a later point what he was thinking when he saw me. He said that he thought, as I was walking toward him, that I looked hot, but as I walked past him, he thought, "Naw, her butt's too big." I gained another 180 pounds after we married, so it ended up being a prediction, I'm thinking...
Please note, I realized long after I left him that he was the master of the hurtful... I asked him once what he thought of my new haircut, which I'd gotten for an upcoming interview. He said he didn't know why I'd "get a Burger King haircut to interview for a $50,000 a year job."
The current and final husband tells me I'm beautiful, even when I feel at my worst. I think I'll keep him.
Love y'all,
Lisa in NC
I totally get how you feel. I always thought if my ex ever said I looked good my answer would be “I always dad, you just weren’t man enough to know it “. Of course he has never told me that and I never expected him to. I’m like you and have a husband that no matter what size I am he still thinks “great *kitten*”.4
