The book I'm reading right now is "Thinner This Year" by one of the authors of "Younger Next Year". It is filled with the "hows" and "whys" of healthy eating and exercise.4

Hi Gals,
Lanette - Salad dressing, I love the stuff, especially the creamy ones, so as I realized the amount of calories in them I started trying all sorts of ones and some recipes and finally found BOLTHOUSE, they are in the refrigerated section of the produce isle in Safeway and Lucky and they are yogurt based, so not too many unpronounceable things, taste good to me, and they run 40-50 calories for 2 tablespoons.
My company is running late getting here, so having a very productive morning… Love those times.
Smiles
Kim from N. California
Kim - I've had the Bolthouse dressings and I agree, they are delicious! I will look for them again. Hope you got a lot accomplished this morning! Very nice to have a surprise gift of time like that

Good evening friends. Played 9 holes of golf. It was cold and windy so didn’t finish 18. Went to dentist for cleaning and checkup Monday. Today bit into a honey graham cracker and broke a tooth. What the heck. Monday everything looked good and healthy.
Lisa- also holding my breath for the closing.
Katla-I think of you when I go to yoga. I am hoping for that good feeling but right now it is a bit hard. I know I need more practice.
Allie- Allie is soooo cute. I know he is a lot of company for you.
Better get off computer.

Hi my dear friends,
I've read a bit but missed most. Just wanted to touch base and let you know I'm thinking of you all. I'm eating better and doing a bit of exercise. I hope to get back in my routine when my schedule slows down.
My best friend from Charlotte, where I used to live, is going to move here some time this year. I'm so very excited. We were very, very close for years and I've missed her terribly.
Good thoughts for all and good health, too.
Love and miss you,
DJ

Allie, Alfie is such a cutie. No wonder you fell for him. Is he a good dog?
I have a good way of limiting my dressing in a salad. I cut my greens pretty fine and then put my dressing on. And then I toss and toss. Doing that I only use a very small amount of dressing. My husband loves it coated, really coats and dripping in dressing.
This morning when I woke up for the first time to go potty, my hand felt so much better. Not normal but not burning. I was so encouraged. But I went back to bed and when I got up for the day it was back to the usual burning.somi am hoping it means we are getting close to the dosage need to take care of this nerve pain.
Machka, you sure are a busy person. My Mom used to mak grape jam and I remember pectin and those jars. But oh the wonderful jam that would be in the pantry, she kept picked beets, jams and tomatoes in the pantry all the time. Also they had a big garden and had a lot of potatoes and carrots. Dad kept a big barrel of sand in the pantry and kept the carrots in that. He found an article in a gardening that you plant a tomato inside a potato and plant the potato. The tomato feeds off the potato in the ground. You then have a bumper crop of tomatoes above the ground and potatoes in the ground.
Well the evening grooming has begun. Melody starts on Mozart's tail and has made her way up his belly. But so far Mozart has remained passive. He looks like he is asleep. So no competitive grooming tonight????? Charlie tends to over salt our porch and sidewalk and therefore we get it inside on our shoes. Mozart loves t just lay crosswise in the hallway. I guess what is in his tail could be salt. Yuck. Melody is now cleaning Mozart's toes. I have never seen. That one before.
Michelle picked up her bowel prep for her colonoscopy today. I sure hope they find out what is wrong. I have a feeling it will be irritable bowel disease with constipation. I have the same thing only it is with diarrhea. She is constinalty constipated and bloated and uncomfortable.
Still watching the European figure skating championships. I even have the Olympic channels best of past Olypmic figure skating. I think it is mainly the women's figure skating. It is such a beautiful sport.
I agree, Pip, your bod is beautiful. It doesn't look aged att all. I think Kirby would agree. How about an ab shot of Kirby!!!!
Sun was beautiful today, did sme melting of snow. It think it got up to about 41. It is supposed to gradually warm up every day and Sunday up to 50 and Sunday night have some rain which will help some more with the snow melting. Our kids haven't had school all week, in fact Friday of last week was their first snow day and haven't been in school since. I haven't seen any snow men in the yards so parents aren't making sure their kids get out in this snow, but I guess in their defense, it has been very cold. But Ellie has been going to work with Christina since she likes her bosses an who is also 11. They have made a snow fort and done a lot of sledding. For those who don't know, my daughter Christina is a personal assistant to a man who has a lot of different businesses, most of them mining, she has an office at his house. So she goes to work at his house every day. His wife home schools their 3 children. They have Nathan, the 11 year old and then 2 teenage girls. Christina also has a teenage girl, Trinity but she doesn't have any interest in going over there on their snow days. For heir snow day home work, Ellie had a gym assingment of playing in snow. Trinity had a choir assignment of looking up u-tube musicals and singing along. So they both enjoyed those. Their school does a good job of doing daily assignments for each class. They never have to have make up days like our school corporation does because of how the teachers are on there every day putting that days assignment and also being available once a day for help if needed. But I have loved their school system from the beginning, they have one school for kindergarteners. All the tables are little, bathrooms and everything are geared to that size. Then when you get to first grade, you are in a classroom that allows you to go to a second grade room if toy excel. Also every first grader gets a welcome letter from a scone grader.
Ok, enough of me blabbing tonight. Joyce, Indiana5 -
I went to the Y totally expecting the class. And it was closed! Yup, the doors were locked. So I came home and did the Peak 10 DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jari Love's Get Ripped 1000 DVD (I do wish she'd come up with different names)
M - if you have too many cherries, you can always send some my way. I would't object....lol
Played mahjongg today then went to Lowes Foods. Got Hamburger Helper on sale, with my coupons, but they didn't have any chicken breasts that I wanted. The old excuse "with this storm, the trucks weren't able to get thru". Anyway, so I went to Food Lion and got some sweet potatoes that were on sale, Gatorade for Vince that was on sale (but not a great sale), Vince needed milk, and they did have the chicken. I'll probably make it tomorrow.
Just got back from WalMart. See, last year Jess' bf gave Vince this real neat picture. Well, Jess mentioned if he had it framed (which at the time he didn't) and I've been on his case to get a frame. He framed it but needed the wire to hang it. The frame comes with a hanger but it's not real good.
Mary - great to see you.

Stats for today:
*18,000 steps
*173 minutes walking Sasha and Bessie
*103 minutes riding the exercise bike
*taught the beginning line dance class
To add the to the discussion about spiralizing vegetables to substitute for pasta---I routinely have Jake's homemade marinara sauce over steamed cauliflower (a bag of the plain frozen stuff). It's easy and it tastes great. I have it with meatless meatballs but it would probably be good with some cut up chicken or regular meatballs.
Allie, your dog is darling
Terry, that's a fantastic name for your business.
I am looking forward to four days in a row where I can walk the dogs extra in the morning because I have no dance classes or doctor's appointments, or vet appointments. Yippee !

Terry, cool name, quite original and unique.
I took Major with me today. He was a hit at the police station where he rolled over and wanted everyone to pet his tummy. Then I took him out to Castlecliff Beach for a walk on the sand. When we got back to the van, I had to wait for it to be totally cooled down so I could put more water in the radiator, as it has an undiagnosed problem. I am saving up to get it fixed.
I saw these two ladies searching the parking lot and looking under vehicles. They came up to the van and I asked them what they were looking for. They were visitors to my town and had lost their motel keys somewhere. So Major and I got out and helped them look but we didn't find the keys.
I asked them where they were from and then they asked me the same. They wanted to know how an American had ended up in a small town in NZ. I told them I'd met my husband on a blind date and we'd just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary and had three kids and two grandkids. Literally, they both looked astonished and glanced at each other. "We thought you were in your twenties!" one said.
Take away from that encounter: sunglasses and a mini skirt and a van are essential Youthing tools!
Loving it! Wendy9 -
Lanette: Thank you so much for the broken brain links! I have gained a lot of support there for the practices I am following, and some new ideas for continuing good health. Just watched a segment on MS, but couldn't talk DH into watching it. He has MS and it could be of value to him, but he's wearing his "no" hat. :-
Wendy & Heather: Arrow has nice accommodations in comparison to many places I've seen. He has a large box stall with a roomy attached paddock. He spends his time out in the paddock beside the fence, side by side with a neighboring horse. They are often close enough to touch. He tends to get sour when he doesn't get enough attention and that has been the case lately. His owner has a husband with medical issues that have kept them both running to the hospital in Portland & I was not feeling well enough to go out and exercise him, either. I will be absent again in a couple of weeks while I travel to see my grandchildren. Which reminds me, I need to let my friend know that I'll be away for a couple of weeks. Poor old Arrow needs more attention than he is getting right now from either or both of us. My friend does an excellent job with feed, care, and cleanliness at the stable. I'm not sure how many horses are currently in residence there. I think she is about my age +/-. She loves horses and works hard to provide good care. I should have been out to see Arrow more often, but was under the weather for a while and didn't feel well enough to go. We're both doing the best we can with our personal situations. :ohwell:
Allie: Mr. Alfie is a cutie.
Karen: We're planning to find a new cleaner when we get back from our trip east to see our grandchildren.
Lisa: It sounds like you are superstitious, like me. I keep quiet about things I really want to have happen out of fear that I'll somehow jinx the situation. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. :flowerforyou:
Heather: I agree that our cleaner is too expensive. She doesn't do things as well as they need doing, either. Change is needed. :grumble:
Terry: Speaking of Rings is a great business name WTG!!!
Joyce: I'm glad you're finally feeling a bit better. Good news! :flowerforyou:
I'm starting to get excited about our upcoming trip to see kids and grandkids. We leave in only 6 days. There is still quite a bit to do, but we have the dog taken care of and need to get ourselves in order and pack. We'll solve the cleaner problem when we get back.

Hi Katla, thought of one more idea that might take some of the pressure off you as well as improve Arrow's attitude: If his owner agrees, maybe there is a horse-mad girl who hangs around the stable or in the neighborhood who would come and give him attention and/or ride him a couple days a week when you are not able to. THat is one of the reasons I continue to have students despite my Busy Bee schedule, because my horses love the attention they get from those horse-mad girls. I can go out riding, and a student will ride one my horses with me, so I am actually able to exercise two horses at once. Appeals to my multi-tasking get 100 things done at once side. LOL. If you don't actually know a teen with horse fever, I bet putting up a notice in a local store would scrounge some up. LOl Wendy2

I was at work from 9 to 5, teaching, prepping, and grading papers, but I still got in 9,500 steps. My commitment to 2018 is to continue living without sugar, to eat healthy, and to walk/jog/workout 6 days a week. Knowing I am fitter at 70 than in my 40s is no excuse to slack off.

Barbie - I love both those books. They are full of really good advice, backed up by real science. Plus humour. Plus they are not smug. I reread them both from time to time, mainly for the science bits. Aren't our bodies just amazing?!?!
For anyone who hasn't read them - YOUNGER NEXT YEAR FOR WOMEN and THINNER THIS YEAR. Exercise is the focus of the first one and gut health of the second. Some of the info is a little out of date, but the principle holds.
Another thing we talk about in this group is Mental Hygiene. Equally important.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx4 -
Saturday -- While my husband was busy with the cherry orchard, I decided to get involved too ... and made cherry jam! My very first attempt at jam. I'll find out tomorrow if I was successful.
While I was doing that, I also put butter chicken on in the slow cooker ... chicken, lots of veg, chickpeas and a butter chicken sauce.
Then I went out for a bicycle ride and tackled some climbing.

Machka, have a scone for me please. my DD starts classes next week. She is taking Statistics, Java, Physics and Algebra. Good thing she quit her job. I think she is going to be very stressed. After this semester, she just has her internship over the summer and then she will graduate with her Associate’s degree. She is a late bloomer but I’m so gal she did it. She is on the Dean’s list and hopes this semester doesn’t bring down her GPA. Then she wants to find a job with benefits and will pay for her Bachelor’s.
Good for her!! I hope she continues to do well. It can be stressful, but also very rewarding.

Machka – interesting about not finding pectin, and jars easily, all of the grocery stores, and even many of the discount or hardware stores carry them here.
I did find pectin in three places. Two places had 50 gram packets (which is what I ended up using) and one had quite a large jar of it. But all the recipes talked about a much bigger variety and specifically a pectin for freezer jam. Neither of the two varieties I found referred to freezer jam at all. And I looked everywhere!
Although that said, I didn't check the health food stores. Maybe that's where I need to look.
One place also had sugar with pectin ... jam setting sugar. I got some of that too and when I added the sugar, I used a bit of it.
Speaking of sugar, the recipe called for an astronomically high amount of sugar!! I halved it. And even then, when I taste-tested it, it seemed really sweet.
Now I know that sugar is also needed for setting, so I hope it's OK and will set. I did the "set test" and that seemed all right.
As for jars, there were all kinds of glass jars for traditional jam, but nothing to go in the freezer. I was surprised! I finally found two sizes of a plastic jar with screw-on top. I got two 500 ml and one 1 litre container, and I've filled all three!
I've got 2 litres of cherry jam setting on the counter!!
I hope it's good after all that!
