Trish - I knew they were there. They are in a container in the door. They don’t really call to me. Now that I’m in maintenance, I might have one occasionally. I have had chocolate chips 4 at a time all along my weight loss. Not every night, but 3 or 4 times a week.
Rye - I hope the time passes quickly for you.

Heather, I am so impressed by your running. To me you are a champion. Sorry to hear that you're not feeling well today.
Allie, everyone else has said it so well to not let your brother and sister-in-law bully you into things. The fact that he is a recovering alcoholic and on meds is no excuse for his bad behaviour. I know that you've gone to Al-Anon and one of the things the program teaches is detachment from the bad behaviour of the alcoholic. It's time for you to live your life and not be dragged around and down by all the family members who pressure you to take care of them.
Pip, congrats on being debt free.
Rye, I hope you'll find a way to make your time alone and fun for you.
About Jake and his call from the PA yesterday. He got some sort of message from the office but didn't actually talk to anyone. It seems that he's fine with driving and taking the dogs out for a quick walk, but apparently he's waiting for approval to do things like wash the dishes, take out the garbage, and do laundry.
Katla, it's hard for me to sit down. I'd much rather be active so it's a rest day for me when I can feel useful sitting down. The paperwork I have is not too difficult, just time consuming.
It was drizzly all day, My clothes and jacket were soaked when I got home from the morning walk. The fence builder didn't come over and I did no weed pulling in the yard. I had a great nap in the afternoon and Jake had an even longer one. His nap was so long that I went in to make sure he was still breathing.

Just want to close the loop on the impromptu adventure DH and I took to Canon City and the Royal Gorge. He dawdled all morning when we were supposed to be on the road, so got a late start. By the time we got to the bridge, it was almost sunset, and we had less than an hour to see any sights before closing. DH cannot be rushed. Stress and dementia don't mix. Then, there was wind. Nothing extreme, but we could feel a gentle swaying. He froze halfway across, and wouldn't leave the center of the bridge, let alone look over the railing. I had to hold onto him and take baby steps together till we we were off the bridge. So, no photos. No exciting rides for me. Waaaaaaa Maybe next time.
The next day was spectacular. In the 70's and not a cloud in the sky. We took the railroad that hugs the Arkansas River along the bottom of the Royal Gorge and enjoyed the two hour excursion very much. After a 3 hour drive, got the cat back home, made dinner and crashed. Below are a couple of pix: In one you can see the train on the tracks running below the bridge. The other is yours truly in the open car of the train. I have seen trains with domed cars, but an open car was a new experience. Loved it.
Today has been a lazy Saturday. A good friend called to say she and her DH are headed here from Oregon at the end of May, so we made plans to meet up near Colorado National Monument, one of our state's 5 national parks. Yay! Another road trip, and a chance to see good friends. We already have a trip to the Poconos booked in 3 weeks to see another couple we have known a long time. Month of May will be busy, but social. I'm thrilled.
Scale was up this AM, and I'm not going to hit my fitbit's numbers this week. Will be hitting the gym tomorrow and fast to get the fresh pounds off fast.
Hugs and healing energy to all who need them. Smiles and high fives to all who are rocking your goals.

Barbie, you made me laugh with Jack's rather partial "approved" activities list. Thank you.

Lenora Good to hear from you again, we were getting worried about you!
Pip The wooden bike is GORGEOUS!!
Barbie Hilarious re: Jake waiting for approval to wash dishes
Machka Praying for you and your husband. I see you in my mind on one of your long, long bike rides, powering up the endless hills, enduring through the heat and rain and road conditions, and how you just keep going, keep going, keep going, one more hill, one more bend in the road, one more long stretch. I hope you can pull from that place deep within you that keeps you riding no matter what comes your way, and use that strength and determination and sheer stubbornness to endure this journey you are on with your husband. Just remember that you need fuel and rest for yourself in order to make the distance.
Terry I loved your "Hardwearables"! I'm one of those who would rather shop in a hardware store than a clothing store. My little town had the most wonderful old-time family-run hardware store, with worn wooden floors and narrow aisles crammed floor to ceiling with anything you could possibly need. I loved just prowling the aisles and gazing at all the unusual parts and pieces they had hanging from the ceilings, hooked to the shelves, and stacked in every available corner. The very smell of wood and oil is heaven to me. My dad was a mechanic in the printing industry, and always came home smelling of a wonderful, pungent combination of oil and ink.
Heather Hope you feel better soon, and things go well for the complicated house situation. Between the house, the book, packing, getting rid of some long-time possessions and papers, and finding a way to speak to your sons about the book, it's no wonder your immune system is run down.
Dana Your Dolly reminds me of my (late) Treeing Walker Coonhound, Winston. I got him as a 3-year-old foster and ended up keeping him. He wasn't the typical active coonhound; he was a couch potato, just wanting to curl up in a corner of the couch next to me.
Allie It sounds like you have some really wonderful supportive friends who love you and think highly of you, both here and in "real life". The fact that your DB and SIL seem to have a problem with you is a reflection on them, not on you. I'm so proud and happy for you making the break from TomCat and creating such a warm, inviting place for you to live and relax.
Rebecca I'm enjoying hearing about your island life. What a beautiful setting and a gorgeous house you are living in! It won't be long before you are friends with everyone on the island.
I've got all my appointments lined up for routine GYN, mammo, Dexa, and GP. Will request blood tests for Thyroid (half was removed years ago), Vit D & B, and will request the in-home colon test instead of colonoscopy. No risk factors for colon cancer, but all 3 of my sisters have had various degrees of breast cancer, ranging from lumpectomy to a very difficult double mastectomy. No genetic factors have been detected, but I feel there must be some unknown genetic factor, so my GYN is diligent.
We had a wonderful Faith & Family Conference at church today, with 4 different preachers and a missionary family from the Philippines. Long day, though, so I crashed & slept for 4 hours when I got home, then got up to take care of placing a few online orders. Time to get back to bed so I can be rested for church in the morning. Talk to all you wonderful ladies later!

Rori - Great photos! I would have been terrified on that bridge too!
Had a horrible "turn" in the night, collapsing in a sweaty heap on the bathroom floor. Couldn't stand up, feeling nauseous. I didn't wake DH up, but managed eventually to shuffle back to bed on my bottom.
I began to think it was kidneys, but I had no temperature. I set about Googling and I'm pretty sure its a recognised side effect of the antibiotic I'm on. Nitrofurantoin. I took the last one yesterday evening. This morning I am beginning to feel a bit better, but I have still cancelled my friend. Still dizzy. Headache. Aches.
Just had a text from my son who got through the huge beer and food festival he organised without a drink.
He said he is "very relieved" as he was dreading it.
Quiet day today. No gymming. Light food. Rest.
Thank you all for your good wishes.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx9 -
Heather - SO sorry you're feeling awful. I take low-dose nitrofurantoin every day, and have no symptoms, but if you continue to feel unwell, get back to the doctor, woman!
Allie - good advice from all, I agree. People who use you and abuse you verbally, emotionally, or otherwise, need to be removed from your life--seeing you so happy earlier in the week about your girl's trip tells me you have amazing friends. Many times, our true family are not the ones raised under the same roof, but those who treat us as family should.
Rori - I went to the gorge many, many years ago, and much like your DH, I froze. I have zero issues with height, but have tremendous fear of being able to see down through the surface I'm on through cracks. Not rational at all, but for many years, I found it hard to even walk over a grate in the sidewalk. I've conquered the smaller fears, but that one remains.
Rye - your photos are gorgeous... love the colors!
Dana - so glad your friend's daughter is making good progress.
Machka - You remain in my heart and on my mind.
Pip - Well done on the debt free! We love it, too...
There were more, but that's all in my memory - I've been reading all week, but not posting.
Love y'all!
Lisa in Arkansas4 -
Was in a weird, unsettled mood for two days before I left on this business trip. Things are a bit chaotic at work, as my boss finally acknowledged to the leadership team that she's in the running for a CEO position at another organization, and everyone's Chicken Littling all over the place (the sky is falling, the sky is falling, what's going to happen to ME!) The rumor had been making the rounds for a month, so it was a good move on her part.
My grant management partner and I happen to be the exceptions, but the mood affected us, as well, as we were trying to get prepped for our first board presentation. It went well, in the end, but that would be because we prepared well--and they're a very engaged board, which is quite helpful.
Now I'm on my only day off of this 13-day marathon, and awake at 3 a.m. I have things to do on the personal side, though, so no worries. Quite odd to be in a hotel room typing without the sound of my husband snoring in the background, but nice to be padding around in my bare feet and lights on, not worried about waking someone. Home again in five days--lots more driving in front of me.
Good news on my husband's side - he got a job with a landscaper/grounds maintenance company not far from us, simply by talking to our new neighbor across the street, who works for them. They literally invented a new job for him, heading up their equipment/vehicle shop, when he went in to talk to the owner yesterday, and hired him on the spot. He starts on Monday. Got to love small companies--so different than the big corporations, and he thrives in those environments. So, of course, he had to go out and buy some tools. Love that man!
For me, of course, it takes some of the pressure off of being sole provider, so I'm happy. For him, he was just starting to get bored, as he'd already got everything where we want it in the house, so he's happy. He's a worker bee, as am I, and we both need to feel useful and needed.
So, things to do, my chickens,
Thinking of you all,
Love,
Lisa in West Texas and New Mexico for the next few days

My husband has been in the Neuro ward for just over 2 weeks now. He’s awake, breathing on his own, and swallowing on his own. They’re getting him sitting up every day. From the neck down, physically he’s all right … it’s just a matter of making the connection between the brain and the limbs.
They’ve fitted him with an automatic speaking valve, and he does say a few words … mostly “Yeah”. However, he doesn’t know his name, my name, where he lives, what date it is or anything like that. I’m not positive he knows who I am, but when I visit, he usually wants to hold my hand, so he seems to like me. However, he is starting to regain some long-term memory.
He still has his trach in, but they are hoping to remove it as soon as his chest infection clears. It’s improving, but it is taking its time.
I mentioned that my husband is regaining some long-term memory. It's not happening how I expected. I sort of expected whole stories to come back ... like all of a sudden he'd be able to tell a short story of his childhood, or something we had done together, or a day on the job when he was a journalist. But it's not like that.
It's sort of like there's a 5-million piece puzzle in front of him, and each day over the past 3 or 4 days he has picked up a piece or two ... or maybe a few ... of the puzzle. The pieces are quite different, and don't necessarily connect to anything yet, and he might keep that piece, or put it down and pick up another one.
More specifically, the pieces seem to be in two categories: physical and word phrases.
In the physical category, he's doing things like trying to get up in the morning. Or typical hand motions like nibbling a corner of his finger, or putting his hand in a "thinking" position on his face. Little things that I recognise as typically "my husband".
He's starting to do the physical things a little bit more consistently.
In the word phrase category, it is just that ... random phrases are coming back to him. Different ones each day. Like: "it depends on" or "in the sense of" or "in the context of". He'll start a sentence quite confidently with a random phrase ... and then kind of dwindle out like he doesn't know where to go from there. But that's OK, it's a start.
And once in a while, he'll say a short sentence or phrase that really fits the context ... like he's reached down and grabbed the right piece of the puzzle!
So far, he's not particularly consistent with this category and he seems to pick up pieces, use them for a little while, and then put them down again. Hopefully, as time goes on, he'll pick up more pieces and start putting them together. But this is a start.
And they tell me that when he finally gets rid of the chest infection and gets the trach removed that he might start talking more. Here's hoping that happens this week, at last!

Heather Wishing you a rapid recovery.
Barbie Great post. Love your dry sense of humor. I agree with Janetr.
Lisa and Rye I rather enjoy being a bachelor. I like being able to turn the lights on at 4 a.m. I like the quiet. I like doing the chores when it's convenient to me. I can relax completely when I am alone, and I need to be alone for awhile each day. My partner works from home, and her working style/way of processing is disruptive to my peace and quiet. This is not her fault. She needs to walk around, do a load of laundry, talk to the dogs, etc., periodically in order for her brain to process her work stuff. Her job is in the area of human subject research protection. Every case is unique, and her responsibility is enormous, so it is important for her to have free rein to process her thoughts in the way that is best for her. It just doesn't sync with my need for an uninterrupted interval of quiet each day. I really need to get my tiny office, now being utilzed as a repository for stuff, cleaned out and made useful for me so I have a retreat. I also need to get back in the habit of taking a walk by myself each day, which is restorative. Today I will start on the office & take a walk after work! Yay!
Rori What a great trip! I hope you get to go back and enjoy the bridge.
Machka Holding you and your husband in my thoughts and heart every day.

I just want to say that I have become fond of people on this thread, and when they don't post for a long time, I miss them. Not suggesting that people feel pressured to post often, that's not what I am trying to say. Just talking about me, here, and how much I look forward to catching up with each of you. I am looking forward to posts from Joyce, Chris, Re, DJ, Penny, Ginger, Vicki GI, and so many more. And of course I miss Gloria. The connection that I have with you gals is precious to me.

One more thing I was thinking about Joyce's hands and I was wondering if these things might help: finger-mittens, Hot Hands hand warmers, paraffin bath.3

Machka. Sending ((( )))
Spent an entire day being an extrovert yesterday at our solo festival. Lots of young teachers to help and panicky parents and adorable students oh and the best part former students coming up to me to share what’s going on in their lives and wanting hugs!! It was exhausting, worthwhile, important work but exhausting.
Have been reading posts but not actively taking care of myself as I usually do.

Today is an anniversary ... today celebrates 28 years of "serious" cycling. "Serious" meaning cycling actively, intently, regularly, purposefully, etc., of course. On April 29, 1990, I decided I was going to start cycling regularly. My first ride was 2 miles, and I had to take a break after the first mile. Cycling has taken me all over the world, and has given me a whole new life I would never have imagined.

(((Heather))) I hope you are already feeling better. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: Let us know how you like the digestive enzymes. I wonder whether they're recommended for people with gluten intolerance. (DH, not me.) I take Lactaid whenever I'm eating a meal that might have milk or real butter in it. It is a huge help. I hope the enzymes will be equally helpful for your issues digesting meats.
Rori: I am happy you & DH were both able to enjoy the railroad ride beside the Arkansas River. I love the photos. It sounds like you have lovely events planned in May.
Lisa: Congratulations on your successful presentation! Congrats also to your DH for his new job. Of course he had to have tools. It is part of male DNA.
Machka: The things you said about your DH are very encouraging. I hope that he keeps improving, day by day.
Karen in VA: I have also grown fond of people on this thread, yourself included. I'm so pleased that Lenora is back with us. I hope something works out so that Joyce will be back with us, too. I have the feeling that she is more active on facebook these days.
DH has been doing so much better since his doctor put him on a FODmap diet. The change is astounding and wonderful. We're in a learning mode right now, but the two big changes are no wheat flower for him, and also no garlic bits. We can infuse garlic into olive oil & canola oil. It is something in the solids of the garlic clove that causes problems. The infused oils are full of flavor and don't cause any digestive troubles for him at all. Yay!!! I just tried to confirm that I'm saying the right things and got a grumpy lecture. He seems to be making a habit of giving me grumpy lectures and I'm getting tired of it. :grumble:

Aw Karen I'll soon be posting more regularly, I promise :flowerforyou: just gotta get home again.
What with teaching (me) and meetings (him), my husband and I haven't been together more than two of the past 18 days. Suffering slight withdrawal, I told him to call me ASAP and ASAP was two days later. And then he said he was going to Nepal on Wednesday But at least we'll be together tonight

Hi All,
I am 60 and new to My Fitness Pal. This looks like a very wonderful and supportive group. I posted a discussion on the general community page, thinking I was posting it to this page but, I figured it out! Thank you, DebCountsAll for responding to my community post! My goal is to lose weight, which is hard but not impossible, and keep it off, which is the impossible part! Something has shifted in me and I really want to do this now for myself and I am determined. Thank you all for being here, I am really looking forward to becoming an active member of this group!8 -
Lannette I am up to bottle strength 3 out of 5 full dose. No reactions yet yet and I agree, it does work!
Been a slug lately. DH has been grouchy bringing my depression on which then makes him angry and makes me feel worse. In a spiral. We really need to move to traveling again. Change is good.

T'ai Chi session yesterday started with a different teacher leading a 45 minute qi gong warmup. Lots of new moves and a really WARM warmup. Audience immediately faded to a blur. Our group's exhibition (that sounds naughty) went very well, unrushed, mostly flowing in unison, and was met with enthusiastic applause at the end. While I had a few too many treats at the pot luck, portion control was right on and managed to stay under CICO-wise.
Lanette cold serum in big shot, owwwww. New good vibe neighbors=cause for rejoicing
pip debt free before 60? Happy dance! sleeping pup pic=Awww
Rebecca How much turmeric and cayenne does your MIL take every morning? Your DD is a crackup, glad you have someone who can match you laugh for laugh.
Katla too bad the food at the rooftop restaurant was disappointing, sounds like wine and companionship to enjoy the view is just the ticket. Tired of grumpy lectures, you betcha. When Joe is being grumpy to me, I have a code phrase that tells him, without p!$$ing him off, to back off before I blow. Is that something that might work for you?
Michele wishing Jess safe travels on the beginning of her new journey.
Sue in WA "ride on native horses wherever they go" what a great plan. Guarantee of new take on familiar experiences. Does your DD blog about her way cool vacations for vicarious riders?
Heather collapsed in bathroom? Side effect of antibiotic??? Please let your MD know and mark this on your chart. Scary! How wonderful your son feels "relieved" to have made it throught the event AF. That's a really positive sign!
Carol in GA "hate that I lost dental insurance when I retired" you SAID it sister. Joe and I have spent nearly $4K on dental in the past year with another $500+ scheduled. Foo.
Wendy thank you for that hope-inspiring story. The body IS wonderfully wrought.
Machka and Dana the roster idea in Wendy's story works. When my BFF was in hospital after a serious car crash her injuries made it impossible to ring for help. Her mother, sister, another dear friend and I divided the days and nights up so she was never alone. we started and ended our shifts with healing hands. Hope that's not too "woo-woo" but whether or not it had a physical effect, it let us come in and leave with a positive "I CAN do something to help" attitude. Her recovery went much faster than predicted and was more complete.
Lenora like your idea of reclaiming your studio from being everyone's storage area. Maybe your sister can help with that Then YOU get to enjoy the prize! Would love to see some of your art
Allie even tho' your brother called to patch things up can you distance yourself from his wife? The more boundaries you can set between you and your SIL, the better... imho.
Evelyn "happy that he'll be so much closer...and that he won't be moving back in with us..." not terrible at all but HEALTHY! Means you did your job and raised him to be able to care for and support himself. Well done!
Terry holding good thoughts that MRI results will give non-surgical fix.
Rye WOW now that's some fridge door ART. How do you get it to stay on? Couln't see any magnets or holders...
Barbie "...waiting for approval to do things like (housework)" HahaHAH! Is the MD in cahoots with him?
Janetr Hobbitlike I resemble that...
Lisa " Many times, our true family are not the ones raised under the same roof, but those who treat us as family should." Wise woman! "invented a new job for him" That is AWESOME. What a boost for him and relief for you. Yay!
Machka What a mix of strong emotions must be surging through you... the frustration/grief/sorrow tempered by seeing glimpses in the physical motions. Ditto what others have said, please continue to fuel and care for yourself to sustain you through this marathon. (((hugs))) for your serious cycling anniversary.
Karen in VA, amen sister. One of the downsides to retirement and a homebody husband is I get so little time alone in the house. "Today I will start on the office and take a walk..." what concepts! Every word of your "fond of people" post was both beautifully said and true for me too.
Hoping the rain will back off this afternoon so I can scrape out the raised beds and lay down the hardware cloth vole barrier.
Oops! So enjoy catching up with you all that time got away from me, again. Can squeeze in a quick meditation then gotta dress to shoes and dash to church.
Enjoy the day, lovelies!

Rye - What a wonderful fridge you have. Isn't it great when you get monetary reward for something that gives you pleasure!
Still lounging around in bed, just reading, and nodding off every few minutes, but I am improving hour by hour. My friend wanted to call in to say hello, which was sweet, but I didn't feel like being sociable. I'm going to make roasted cauliflower and tomatoes for dinner to have with the cold chicken we have, that DH has kindly taken off the carcase. Couldn't face wrestling with it myself. I may, as a very rare treat, have some basmati rice with it.
Katla - I'm so glad that your new regime is helping your DH, at least in the stomach department, if not in his attitude. He may be something like mine, a bit jealous and suspicious of this thread. I have to be very careful how I refer to it.
Machka - I really appreciate your updates. Thank you.
Penny - Nice to hear you are going "home" . Now I can picture where you are!
Barbara - I have emailed the practice, telling them of the side effects. They are on the Internet and on the piece of paper that comes with the capsules, but my nausea, aches and dizziness was horrible. I have never had "side effects" of that nature to anything before.

Machka My word I chose for 2018 was strength. Every time I bring that to mind now, my mind’s eye keeps showing me your profile pic. I have no words for the enormity of what you are facing, and I hope I have 1/2 the strength in me that it appears you have. I am so relieved to see your exercise stats again. Please keep taking care of YOU.
Wendy where are you? Happy with all the horses (including the sweet new one) I am hoping. We are close in age, but you are so different from me, and I learn so much from your accounts of adventure or daily life.

Frivolity: Rye goes to goodwill and gets clothes!
I took advantage of DH’s absence to walk to the Goodwill store and really shop. I do NOT like shopping, generally, (unless it is a hardware store or the ever vanishing book stores) but DH really and truly HATES it.
I spent 70 dollars. That is like my ‘pin money’ for an entire month or more. I got a pair of jeans, 6 tops (one casual, 5 for work) a pair of work pants (almost too tight for me! good incentive not to gain the weight back), 3 belts (Necessity!), and 3 dresses! (Plus a work shirt for husband, a spatula, and set of metal measure cups).
Imagine, me buying dresses! From age 29 to 52 I didn’t own or wear dresses! Only had a few necessary black skirts for the infrequent ‘occasions’. But I could not resist, the dresses were cute on me, and FIT!
But I hit the jackpot in tops. I have to wear black tops to work. But since I live in hot flash city I want sleeveless and open neck. But I still want a modest neckline (no visible cleavage) and it can’t be a tank/workout muscle shirt look for my workplace. This is a hard to find combination, I tell you! And now, instead of the two I’ve been wearing and laundering every night after work, I’ll have options!
————
I keep checking the ‘find my friends’ app to see if hubby has started trip home. He has not done so yet. That means probably very late tonight. I know he is having a good time, yet I wish he’d cut it short and come home. Selfish. I’m going to go read a book and try to stop thinking about it.
Warm wishes to all
Rye

I discovered that my grandson was a tree hugger last night!
The weather has been so beautiful for walking the dogs the last few nights. I am beginning to forget all about the long winter we had.
We are taking mother in law for lunch and a drive for a ferry crossing today for her 89th birthday. It’s hard to come up with an activity for her as her dementia worsens. She used to take the little ferry a lot with DH when he was young.
Have a sunny day peeps!
