I am wondering if I need new shoes? How do you know when your shoes are no good anymore? I looked at them and twisted them and they seem ok. I have had them for a long time (few years) but never started running after I bought them (lol) until just recently. Not that they've never been worn over the last few years, I have worn them now and gain to go walking or hiking in or whatever.
I was running last night and by the end of my short run my ankles were kind of hurting a little bit.
The general rule of thumb is 300-500 miles. Many people swear by that at least and many shoe manufactures present numbers in that range for their shoes.
BUT if your shoes are bothering you NOW. Then replace them NOW. No matter what the millage is.2 -

The BMI charts, as I understand it, were aimed at "average Americans" - which means they do not take in to account the simple fact that muscle weighs more than fat. The general idea, I think, is that if you are athletic enough so that your muscle mass makes a difference you are not paying attention to BMI anyways. You are looking a performance metrics instead.
Somehow over the years, BMI became the gold standard. Foolishly so, but I am sure it was because it is so simple and easy.
I ran a 4 hour marathon while "obese" on the BMI Chart. *shrugs* Guess I'll grab some chips and watch TV since I am too fat to do anything else...

Well I don't know if it's the shoes or if it's just because I'm a noob and my body is still getting used to it. My ankles just start to get a little sore and achey towards the end of my run but they don't continue to hurt when I'm done or anything.1 -

I got 4 miles done this morning during the "cool" part of the day. It kind of sucks when the cool part of the day is 82F! I think this is the hottest summer we have had in a while. It is supposed to be 108F today (and for the rest of the week). It is already 96F at a little after 11 am. I felt a little slow today, but overall it was a good run. Just hot.
@Teresa502 Way to go on the AG award and for being a great friend. I hope your friend heals quickly. That sounds awful.
@MegaMooseEsq I ran a HM in May and I modified a Hal Higdon plan. I was already running ~8 miles for my long runs and I didn't want to shorten them so I just took his plan and kind of tweaked the percentages that he increased each week and did that. I also just did yoga and walking for my cross training.
@hesn92 I usually know it is time for new shoes when I start getting random aches in my feet. I think the "rule of thumb" is 300-500 miles. But if your feet or knees or shins are giving you trouble then it is often a shoe problem. I am kind of thinking I need new shoes now even though I only have 232 miles on my current shoes.

I've been MIA for awhile. Last Thursday I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled. I underestimated how much it would effect my energy levels. I can push through pain but not when all I want to do is sleep. I'm sure the meds had something to do with it but all I know is I was like, "Wow! Eating breakfast was exhausting. Let's take a nap..." I'm finally back to mostly normal. I still have some minor pain and have that puffy feeling in the back of my mouth like when you bite your cheek. Yesterday I tackled the garden and yard for a few hours. This morning I had to go for a run. It felt so good! I don't think I'm going to reach my goal for the month, especially since we leave for vacation on Sunday. I should have thought about everything going on before I set such a lofty goal. Oh well... Luckily there is a bike/running path near our hotel so hopefully I can get out there at least a couple days.

Haha! I have a strong RBF game so I have to make an effort to look "happy" or whatever.5 -

Your shoes sound like the shoes I was using when I started running last summer. They definitely didn't have 300 miles of running on them, and probably not even 300 miles of walking, but they were a few years old and had definitely been worn for various things over the years. I ended up replacing mine after having some knee pain flare up after maybe a month and I was glad I did. Since then I've tried to be religious about only wearing my running shoes for running and keeping the old pair for walking.4 -

I seem to have resting snob face - people are always telling me, "I thought you were stuck up before I talked to you." Really it's being shy and naturally concealing my emotions.
I've gotten the "make sure you're feeding him right" thing from my MIL but she means the opposite, that my husband was getting pudgy. We like to pair up and tease him.4 -

LOL last night my son asked me why I looked so angry, then made this grimace to show me what I looked like. I started laughing and put my hand over my mouth (to not be so loud) and he was all "It's okay Mama, you don't have to hide it."3 -

BMI charts aren’t accurate and really shouldn’t be followed to a T. If you want a truly accurate measurement of your body fat get a dexa scan. That also measures your lean mass and bone health1

Welcome @Icarusgirl ! Sounds like your in the southern US? I'm in southern Oklahoma. Supposed to be 109F/42.8C today here. Yuck! Already 107 at noon.
I think i will, after this weekends duathlon, start running in the wee hours of the morning like @garygse . Be good for me to work on getting "dark acclimated".4 -

No, for a man at 5'7" and 158 lbs., you are in the "Normal / Healthy" range with a BMI of 24.75. If you gained 2 lbs., you would be "Overweight" with BMI over 25. To reach "Obese," at your height, you need to weigh more than 200 lbs.
I'm 5'7" and hover in the low to mid 150's lbs. But I'm more interested in body fat %. I would like to reach below 10% and that means losing around 12-13 lbs. For now, I'm maintaining weight as I increase mileage. I'll worry about those last few lbs. later.5 -
@hesn92 - One trick that I use in my mileage posts is to include a word that isn't common. In my case I go to agility class each week with my dog (it is truly a workout in itself) so I note the agility days along with my run mileage. I also have races listed that I can search on as well. That makes it easy for me to find and copy a previous post and add to it.
@MegaMooseEsq - I run 5 days a week typically with a midweek rest day and a weekend rest day. I also lift twice a week with a trainer and lifting heavy as well. On those lifting days I typically run in the morning (3-5 miles) and lift late in the afternoon. My trainer always checks in to see how I am feeling, did I run that day and how far/fast and adjusts what we are doing accordingly. Doesn't necessarily mean less just maybe not as much focus on legs but more on full body or upper body. He also cuts back on the lower body impact the week or so before I have a race. For example tonight will be my last strength workout before my HM on the 29th. There have been days where I have a specific run on the plan that I had to modify after a tough lifting session but I have also had some where I thought my legs would be too trashed to run the next day and they felt amazing.
@pastorvincent - funny how our societal norms still have the expectation of the woman taking care of the husband and somehow being responsible for what and how much he eats or not. I personally don't have that kind of control over mine and wouldn't want the responsibility. Besides he would hate me because I would take all of his junk/sweet food away Like @kcs76 says - my mouth would get me in trouble in that situation too!
@polskagirl01 - The charts are ok as a reference point but even a lot of practitioners don't like them, especially when used alone. You can have very low BF and still be too high on the BMI chart.
@hesn92 - over time the cushioning (foam) in your shoes will dry out so if you have had them for years, whether you ran in them or not I would get new running shoes and keep those for walks and hikes and other non-running activities. Running shoes have changed and evolved a lot too with many options and levels of cushioning, etc.. I would recommend going to a running focused store and have a gait analysis done to get you in the correct shoes. Just use caution if they try to sell you orthotics.1 -

Thanks @PastorVincent, @kgirlhart, and @shanaber! Last October I posted one of those “do I really need a rest day?” posts on the fitness forum and got some very helpful advice that mostly boiled down to “yes” and “never jog in place at stop lights”. I realized that I’ve primarily been struggling mid-week after my Monday deadlifting workout, so I think moving that forward a day and adding a mid-week rest day is probably the simplest tweak. I had a really good stretching session earlier today so that’s going right on the schedule going forward.
I think I’d like to work up to running a half marathon, but I’m not in any sort of rush - I just want to keep running, keep lifting, and avoid hurting myself. I realized looking at the HH plan that I’m really not ready to commit to more than about an hour of “workout” time most days. Given my current pace, the HH plan would have me at about an hour and a half three days a week and I’m just not down for that right now.
So for the rest of July going into August I’ll start off with this and see how it goes:
Monday: 3-3.5 miles
Tuesday: 1 mile/lift (deadlift/inverted row/OHP)
Wed: rest/stretch
Thurs: 2-3 miles
Fri: lift (squat/BP/1h row)/stretch
Sat: Long run
Sun: rest/stretch2 -

I had a 4 mile run scheduled for tonight, but it is POURING outside with lots of thunder. I took tomorrow off, so I suppose I’ll try to get up while it is still cooler to get it in before my strength training later in the day.3

Also, I had planned to order new running shoes tomorrow since it will be pay day, and the sale price went up today! I’ll probably still order them, but I am bummed.0

Well, yesterday turned out to be a rest day since my daughter needed me to drive her around to appointments (she goes to get her license tomorrow...pray for us all) and I ran out of time to run, which was a shame because the weather was perfection. It was still really nice today so I ran 5 stinkin' miles at the lake and I'm really proud of myself! I have faith that I'll be running 6 by the end of August (if my bra chafe doesn't kill me first), so I'm going to start shopping around for a 10K in September. There's one at the park where I normally run, but it might be nice to do something a little different.
Thanks, everyone who weighed in on wearables. It sounds like I'm going to need to do some more research! I'm wondering if someone local would have a used one for me to buy to make sure I like it before dropping the $$$ on a new one.
It's supposed to be nice again tomorrow, so I'll have time for a run and perhaps begin my ark-building before the next 7 days of forecast rain and thunderstorms...

I ordered more Nike Pegasus 34s.
Loved my first pair. I've worn them for fast 5km runs, and on my 50 km run. Never any problems.
The 35s are out, but I really wanted to get another pair of 34s since I know they're awesome.
