happens in yoga and aerial classes all the time. so i have a tendency to wear black or patterns. seems to help @MegaMooseEsq @Elise4270
Yeah, I was hoping to exchange for black, but no such luck! Live and learn. At least I know the Baleafs don't show sweat in several colors.@MegaMooseEsq, @elise4270 and @mbaker566 - I have a few pairs of shorts and capris like that too and I will wear them to run in (not to the gym though - too many eyes there). I have found several longer shirts that I wear with them that cover in the front and back so it is not so visible. One of my favorites is a $12.99 shirt from Costco. I got one in the store and ordered other colors online and they ship for free... https://www.costco.com/Tuff-Ladies'-Active-Keyhole-Tee.product.100390351.html
Nike used to have some too but theirs and UA's all seem to be getting shorter the last few seasons.
My running shirts are just past crotch length so it's probably not ALL that visible. I'm probably going to need new long-sleeves this year but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I was thinking about buying some loose shorts to wear over the compression shorts but I'm probably not going to worry about it. As @Elise4270 said, it ain't no thing.1 -
Someone last month mentioned Gypsy Runner for shorts with pockets... Has anyone tried them? Any comments on fit? I am also interested in the shirts. They have some really cute designs.
I bought a pair and love them!
Pros: Nice deep pockets and they don't ride up at all. (I got the 9 inch ones; they stay put well enough that I'm going to buy the 7 inch ones).
Cons: They must be hung to dry, but I have to do that with my running bras, too, so not really a big deal. It does mean that I have to have another pair or two, though.
Also, they don't have a ton of "compression" to them, if that matters. I felt a little...jiggly...in them, so I prefer to wear a longer shirt with them.

actually following rest day as part of my running plan. I usually just do an easy run but today I decided to rest.7

I feel like 4 is a lot of races in a month. I am going to wait and see. I am doing no spend August and will probably do no spend September too. Having a fridge and ac go within a week of each other puts a dent in the race fund!
It depends on the races. I have 6 races in August: A series of 4 cross country 5K races, with a mile road race and a 400m on the same evening as the last 5K. The 5K course is a little short, closer to 3 miles. The races are low key. I'm using them instead of speed work for August. I don't think this is excessive. I am thinking in terms of finishing the last 5K early in the pack, so I get more recovery time before the mile than some of the slower runners do.
OTOH, the 4 races I had originally registered for in June was a very aggressive month: National masters half marathon, trail half marathon, fast & competitive 5K, and trail 5 mile. I ended up being injured after the half, DNS the trail half, and running as the day developed for the other two while worrying about aggravating my injury.
I only have two races in September: A half marathon with a tough course on September 2, and a full marathon with a reputedly easy course on September 30. Those 2 races are aggressive enough, and in total more aggressive than August's 6 races.3 -
I didn't take my phone with me on the 10K last Saturday, but a couple of pics showed up online. One is walking down the final ski slope descent, because my legs are too shot to run downhill; the other is a not terribly great shot of me in the finish chute, where I managed my fastest running of the race.12

so i've been feeling aimless. and i don't know if i have a commitment. and keeping in mind i'm a turtle
if i were to do that whole 26.2 mile thing, which plan do you like better?2 -
I was going to run 12 miles today, but I'm really thinking I'm not going to and instead will do some basal testing (i.e. diabetes stuff). To be successful, I need to fast, not exercise, etc. in order to not have any extra factors to affect BG. I'm not sure if I'll end up making up those miles tomorrow or over the weekend, but I have a busy weekend and a 23 mile run already, so I might be behind in miles early in the month.6
-
@mbaker566 On the first plan, where is Sunday? I assume that is the long run day?
MobyCarp Well, it's the month after my marathon too! But I find I need to get back out or I won't and it's too hard. I am not planning to push myself in most of these. There's only one I want to at least maintain my time because they do a special corral and you have to prove your previous time. The other 2 (or 3) I am just doing for fun.1 -
i fixed it @RunsOnEspresso1

I personally like the 16 week plan in terms of mileage and # of days running (note if you wanted to make it a 20 week plan, you could repeat weeks 9-12 after completing week 12 so you would get 2 long runs of 20 miles). While you might not be a speed demon, any sort of speed (fartlek, interval, tempo) and/or hill work is very good in building aerobic capacity and also pushing your legs/mind to work harder and prepare for the complete distance. If finishing is just you primary goal, perhaps running the designated miles and/or miles with hill/hill repeats would be OK as an alternative.
Net - There are likely 1000's of plans (free and/or paid) you could review to run a marathon in 12 to 20 weeks and depending on the goal (i.e. from just finishing, to finishing in X hours) would help determine if you could do more or less in the type of runs or how much you run, etc. Whatever plan you choose, if you get the majority of the runs in during your training, you will have more enjoyment and satisfaction when you cross the finish line on race day.
Finally, make it fun! I run with a group where the motto is "If you ain't having fun, you're doing it wrong".5 -
one other point. I do like the idea of half marathon race positioned 4-5 weeks out from your marathon. It will be a good gauge of your fitness at that stage since you would be just a couple weeks from a taper and it will help you determine how to pace your marathon, and get race ready. Also serves as a supported test of incorporating what works hydration/nutrition perspective during a race while practicing the same on your own during long runs.4

Five on trails. My GPS was messing with me! It called one mile exactly as we turned onto the river trail. So we said we'll run two miles, then turn around and run two miles back, then walk the mile back to the car to cool off. We're pretty familiar with the river trail and where the mile markers are, so we were a little surprised when between mile two and three it seemed like we were running, and running, and running, and passing where we usually turn, and running some more. Finally it calls three and we turn around and run back to the trail head. Which, if you can do math, should be at exactly five miles. But it's not. It's at 4.3 something. So we ran all the way back to the car, and it shows we have now done 4.92. Heavy sigh.
Anyway we did run until the darned thing decided to call five, and then we walked a couple as a cool down. But I think based on our time, it was probably more like six miles. It's showing one of our trail miles, when we were doing a pretty zippy pace, was at 24 something pace! Ugh. Usually the GPS is so consistent for us, I wonder if one of the stations was down or something.
Anyway, despite probably being longer than expected, it was a good run! More technical than I've been doing recently, lots of washouts and gullies and sand. It was hot since it was 1 pm, but the dewpoint was only 61, and that does seem to help a lot.
We stopped at our usual Mediterranean restaurant after, and the owner has taken it upon himself to figure out a diabetic-friendly baklava I can eat. He had several samples of various attempts which his daughter said turned out the best. And an hour after eating, my bg was 91! I'll take it!

August 11th. I just found out about it and signed up in the last couple days.

@shanaber You touched it, you bought it. The heat is all yours now for the rest of the summer!
Another cooler morning today, and as it's Thursday, that meant 1½ hours running 9 miles, followed by another hour with the group running an additional 5. Tomorrow should be my first long run of the training season, so I've got 21 miles planned. That means I need to get up an hour earlier than normal to fit in the extra 5-6 miles, and seeing as I normally get up at 2:30am, I'll probably be in bed before 7pm.
In other news, my new Zoom Fly SPs arrived...the upper material is very interesting, they feel comfortable, and I like the look and styling. They're supposed to be better suited for faster-paced runs, so I figured I'd try them out with a small tempo run on either Saturday or Sunday morning. If I like them, I'll keep 'em for speed work and race days, otherwise they're going back to Nike.

The picture at the top of that page made me smile - I swear you used to see runners looking forward at the start of a race instead of at their wrists!3 -
8/1 rest
8/2 9miles
Started August with a rest day and ran 9 miles this morning. 82 degrees and sunny made it hot! Shady areas made at a little more bearable. My legs feel sore already and I was beat this afternoon. Not sure what is going on or if it’s just running in the heat that’s kicking my butt more than usual.

I am soooo tired tonight. I took the dogs for a walk, but a run just isn’t in me tonight. I figure that since I took tomorrow off work, I can just make my runs for the next three days really good ones.
It is sad when you are ready for bed by 18:30...8 -
8/1 - 1.5 miles
8/2 - 2.85 mile walk
Our tiny human is sick - just a slight fever, but we didn’t realize it until bedtime last night after having him out in the heat at the zoo yesterday. So today has been a lot of cuddling on the couch under a quilt. We did get out for a family walk after dinner - did a loop on the trail by our house for 2.85 miles. 84% humidity = terrible. But the tiny human seemed to enjoy his stroller ride and his daddy and I need the steps.
I started doing calf raises while I brush my teeth. We’ll see if it makes any difference.
August: 1.5/20 (only counting running)10 -
So I have a fasting blood draw Monday. I am debating if I run or not. I can do a 40-minute foundation run fasted but I usually eat something after. I can't run any other time of day, too hot. Do I just take a ton of food with me and shovel it in after my blood draw? I risk getting shakey, headache, and crabby with or without the run.0

Just skip the run for that day. I'm sure there will be opportunity to make it up (if you feel you need to)2 -

The exercise is probably not a good idea because it may change the levels of whatever they are testing for. Skip it, do another kind of workout indoors if you feel the need later. It's one day.2 -

I love the color on these! I've never run in these "rocking horse" type really curved shoes, I wonder what it feels like. Let us know what you think!0 -

I wouldn't run till after the blood draw, for fear of doing something to skew the results. Assuming it's just a draw for tests and not donating a unit to the Red Cross, you can run after the draw. It's up to you whether you think you'll do better eating after the blood draw and before running, or running fasted.
Assuming the blood draw is as soon as they open, it might still be cool enough for a run, though perhaps shorter than your usual run. If time till it gets too hot is a concern, food needs to be quick. I'd be thinking a banana, run, then have real breakfast given a requirement to run before the day warms up too much.1 -
Today has been super busy so I haven't gotten out to run yet. Aiming to hit the pavement in about an hour or so. One thing I don't like is how narrow the roads here are - no shoulder or sidewalk. It's hard to feel safe. Thinking I'll run in my hi-vis vest since I'll be heading out later than planned. Tomorrow is a travel day so no running.2
