Had the end-of-season bowling party. I won’t be tracking since I can’t say for sure how things were made. I did have to have some of the host’s dessert. Had mostly salads, avoided the croutons, sour cream, butter, cheese. The lady gave me a lot of tomatoes from her garden. One of them was “leaking” so I put it out of is misery. Still warm from the sunshine….I know, I know, life’s tough
Heather – keeping fingers and toes crossed
Rye – how about “that’s the way the pickle squirts”?
Katla – I think a lot of the (to me) poor way the Newcomers is going is because of the president. She’s still mourning her husband’s death – big time. I know that she’ll never forget, and there are challenges. But I honestly think that she really needs grief counseling. For example, every month Newcomers puts out a newsletter and there’s a letter from the president. Now, it’s been almost a year since her husband died. Every month she has a picture of him in the newsletter. I fully understand her mourning, but, really, we need to move on. I’m sure she’s missing him. This is her third year as president and I think she’s just taking the easy way out and biding her time until her term is over. Then any problem is the next president’s. She has accepted the help of the guy who is funding the holiday party, I think mainly because that’s the easy way. He has arranged for the place, arranged for the entertainment. She hasn’t had to do anything. She’s just leaving it all to him. Only problem is that this is opening the door for problems. What happens when the next president takes over? A precident has been set. Other sponsors will want to promote their business and pay for things for us. What happens if the IRS gets involved?
Shanson – welcome!
Terry – awesome necklace
I’m the person who may keep things for a few years, but if I don’t use them I throw them out. Now Vince….that’s another story totally. I do keep cards, etc. from the kids
Lisa – good thought for your doctor’s appointments. Good job on the loss
Snowflake – LOVE that rock

Terry: I take 500mg of Turmeric every morning. It is good stuff.
Barbara: I wanted to wrap the gift to look like a log cabin, but I lack the skills to get it done, so I put regular giftwrap on it. My stress levels over the deal are back in my comfort zone. I'm not much of a "crafty" person. :ohwell:
Meg: Have a safe journey.
Machka: Beautiful rainbow photo. Wow! You live in a beautiful place. :flowerforyou:
We've had a call from VW and they're still working on DH's car. (We brought mine home yesterday and are very happy with it.) He plans to go in tomorrow to give it a test drive and/or bring it home. They haven't found anything wrong so far.

So happy it's Thursday, ladies!!
Kelly - (((HUGS)))) I agree, you are doing a VERY important job!! You are a natural and to have been lucky enough to find your niche is a blessing. Thank you for asking about the smoke -- weather report said this morning western WA was due to get some California smoke but so far, other than a bit of hot haze, no smoky smell like we had last summer. We might see a little rain this weekend - hope there's enough to cool things off on the west coast.
Carol - I feel for you cleaning out and your DH finding "gems", lol. Sounds like you have a good plan though, one drawer/room at a time. Little things add up.
Meg - safe travels! Catch up on hugs!! What a nightmare about your friend's son, glad he was acquitted but still the turmoil and hassle and bad feelings stirred up.
Katla - any smoke down your way today? Blueberries up here are finishing up, my freezer is loaded BUT still think I'll buy another 2# container to bag up and stick in there. Tomatoes are coming on and I'll put some of those in the freezer too - will thaw and cook down this winter for "fresh" sauce. Hope your vehicles get all fixed up and ready for many months of carefree driving.
Barbie - Yippee, on the mend at last ;-)
Penny - I love hearing about your strawberries and the culture there in Norway. That early early morning rainbow - what a neat surprise! We are to have a meteor shower (Perseid) this weekend - can you ladies in other parts of the world see it if it gets dark enough? Not like and eclipse so you probably can.
Machka - I am so proud of you continuing with your schooling during your DH's recovery and graduation coming soon!! Yes, photos or video's please! I was elated to hear he baked you a birthday cake!! Happy Birthday if I forgot to wish you one earlier!
Michele - Looks like intriguing things going on at the newcomer's club. I'm afraid I would have grown weary of the drama and told them adios. We have a little of that going on with the Master Gardener Board members but not to the extent of what Vince is dealing with. How nice for you to hop into the pool and relax and forget about it for a while.
Terry - can you get your daughter to decorate your cast? Love that necklace for her, by the way. So glad to see you back here!!
Regarding turmeric, what I take is Curcumin and boswellia made by Terry Naturally - Curamed or Curamin. I have found free samples at the health food store--since it's expensive I was OK at the lowest dose for months. I look for sales and use my Amazon rewards on purchases like these.
I think it builds up in the system. I know there are a lot of different brands and yes, some with black pepper which helps activate the anti-inflammatory qualities from what I've read. I love curries but don't think I could put enough turmeric in it to make a different, lol.
So Rye - if there's a health food store close by, they might give you all kinds of samples of different brands. I don't have allergies to NSAIDS but years of taking them for back pain and migraines have made my tummy super sensitive. I haven't had any stomach issues with this stuff but also take it with food most of the time.
Heather - hearing about your different papers and items you are sorting through is taking me down memory lane. I have a couple boxes of sheep pictures - our flock, which I just loved. About 20 years of photos - and I can't look at them long without getting teary-eyed. Funny, I don't have that same reaction when looking at photos of relatives, lol.
Rebecca, I think I need to hire you to paw through my sheep pix and just pick out a couple dozen nice photos and pitch the rest. Your son's ship is exquisite!! Must be fun just watching him work on it, he's very talented!!
Tracey - you are my hero with your photo organization and pitching. Scrapbooks are a great idea!
I volunteered to read a memoir and in the midst of it right now - as a "test-reader" and will post a pre-publication review on Amazon. The subject is a lady who was the mom of one of my schoolmates who died from dementia (I thought) a few years ago. Heather, it reminds me of your book a bit because he talks about his childhood growing up in rural Indiana -- they lived down the road from my parent's farm.
Evidently she was a hoarder and a writer, so she left a lot of personal papers. Even though the writer was the youngest child, he is able to pull together a lot of pertinent information and still maintain a pretty detached description of her life as he tells it, starting with childhood during the Depression in the 1920's when her father left her mom and young children to fend for themselves.
I am zipping through it right now just to get a feel for how it flows and will give it another go with more attention to detail. I can tell it's cathartic for him - but I'm curious how the eldest child would have written it. And my classmate who likely took after her mom with her own "wild streak" lol.
On another topic, someone mentioned having a house with 2 bathrooms. If I could design a house, I would have one bathroom with a toilet and a shower/tub for people to actually bathe, and then a half-bath with toilet and sink, maybe the laundry there too with close access to an outside door. So if a person is working outside and feels the call of nature, no need to either tramp all the way though the house or stop and take off shoes/boots, etc. My lucky DH - we have enough landscaping and trees in our back yard that he doesn't often have to run into the house if you get my drift.
Beth - I am going to be on the lookout for those toilet lights! Christmas is coming!
OK time to close this. I see a lot more posts have been zooming in but will check them later. Have a great evening ladies!

Hi Sisters, every morning I am grateful because I am another day closer to spring and another day closer to having a new baby foal to play with.
This morning I listened to Clarissa Pinkola Estes while I was doing my weights and I loved this quote of hers: "You can't fit a tiger into a matchbox." I am going to remember it as I go about trying to fit into what society deems normality. LOL. I just can't quite squeeze myself into the mold.
Here in NZ where prices tend to be high, I buy a one kg bag of turmeric at an Indian bulk foods store for $12 NZ. This lasts me for about a month as I take it and I also give it to my horses every day to keep their bodies young and healthy. I probably consume between a quarter tsp and half a tsp a day, which is what Dr. Michael Gregor also recommends in his book How Not To Die, based on what millions of Indians consume daily. LOL. If you have a queasy tummy or don't want to add it to your foods (I don't notice any taste in food at all, but it does flavour drinks a bit) you could always buy a bag of gel capsules, empty ones, and fill them at home and take it as a capsule. That might be a cheaper option. I am pretty sure it is Dr. Gregor who also recommends the whole spice rather than to just take an extract of curcurmen.
My youngest daughter just called to ask me to meet her for a meal later today. Nice to feel loved. Not so long ago she hated me and ran away from home when she was a month shy of 16 (right after I had bought a 'dream horse' for her. She went through a rebellious teen stage, dropped out of school, got into drugs and criminal boyfriend...Thank God that is all behind us and she survived and she loves me again. LOL She told me that she wants to keep the new foal that is due for herself. Maybe... She is 9 weeks pregnant herself and very happy, though quite nauseas.

Hey, just a thought I wanted to add about turmeric. I started giving it to the 'dream horse' that I bought for my daughter, right before she ran away from home. It was a pink- nosed Pinto that got badly sunburned and blistered all over her nose the first summer. I wanted to help her avoid the pain the next summer. She was a huge, part draft horse and could hold her nose way out of my reach when I tried to put sun lotion on her. Another option was a halter with a nose shade but I don't like to leave halters on my horses in the paddock as they can get caught up and choked or they rub the hair off and make sores. So I researched on the net and read somewhere that adding turmeric to the food would stop sunburn. So I tried it on the pinto and she never got another sunburn on her delicate nose. I was very impressed and started taking it myself for the same reason, as I am fair skinned and my grandfather, a redhead, died of skin cancer, and my mother has already had cancer cut out of her nose...I burn easily. Or,rather, I used to burn easily. Now that I take turmeric I have never burned again. And I haven't used suncream ever since I started using turmeric. Here's a great website of information for those who are interested in the many, many benefits of taking turmeric: http://www.ayurvedacollege.com/articles/students/turmeric Wendy3

That's very informative Wendy! Thanks!!! I have never thought about it in that wsy. I just knew it helped my MIL with her arthritis. I pretty much use turmeric and cayenne pepper on all my foods!

Went to ACMoore for the needlenight, then went to Aldi because Vince needed milk for tomorrow and I was right by Aldi.
Lanette – if you find those toilet lights, please let me know where you found them. That’d be a great gift for Vince! I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/16-Color-Motion-Activated-Toilet-Nightlight/dp/B073TBP1D5/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1533865455&sr=8-7&keywords=toilet+lights+inside+toilet+glow+bowl Beth – is this the one?

Hello, everyone. My story is similar to many of yours. My husband passed away 6 1/2 years ago. After 3 years, I finally accepted and tried to move on by taking his clothing to a nearby organization where they could be used. Shortly after my husband passed away, I decided I, too, had to get the sugar back under control as I'm Type 2. My weight gain had reached 215. Committed myself to exercising again (hubby and I exercised 3 times a week because of his health needs). Was successful getting my weight down to 175. Then my sister (only living sibling) became ill. She lived 126 miles away. A promise to my Dad while I was caring for him that he should not worry about my baby sister because I would make sure she was OK. Drove that 126 miles weekly for 2 years and then she sold her home and moved to my hometown to make it easier on the both of us. Five months after she moved, she passed away in September 2017. Two months after she passed away, I had a total knee replacement. It has been a tough time trying to deal with her passing and my inability to be as active as I've been in the past. When the scales tipped to my old weight, I promised myself it would off. This weight gain has caused a lot of swelling that is definitely uncomfortable. As you will read in this message, I'm definitely depressed. It will pass I know; however, the fact that you are all here to encourage and support will make this journey so much easier.
Thanks from my heart,
HappyJoGardener

Turmeric is not a taste I like much outside of Indian dishes but I found one terrific use for it - my most days glass of tomato juice (which the way I drink it is actually a Bloody Mary without the vodka). I add a big dash of turmeric to this and the flavors are very complimentary.

I just got this from my 17 yo granddaughter showing me her new hair color. She had it teal green for the past couple of months. She'll be a senior in high school this year.

KetoneKaren wrote: »Machka You live on Tasmania! How interesting!
My husband is Tasmanian (Australian, of course, but born and raised in Tasmania) and we've been here (back here, for him) for 5 years. Before that we lived in Victoria, north of Melbourne.
For reference ... Hobart to Launceston is 200 km (124 miles)
The rainbow photo was Penny's ... way, way up north (Norway?)
This is a collection of mostly Tasmanian photos, with a few in other parts of Australia ...

Machka - Thanks for all the info. DH has a brother out in Australia. He went out there in the 70s and stayed. He used to live north of Adelaide, but is now out on the nearby peninsula at Moonta. After we married in Nov 2003 we went on a trip to see his brother in early 2004. Landed st Sydney, spent a week there with a friend, flew to Melbourne, spent a week there with a friend, then drove to Adelaide along the coast road. (2/3 days) Spent 4 weeks around there, including 2 weeks all by ourselves in their house near the beach at Moonta on the peninsula. Took a lot of trips out to wine growing areas from Adelaide.
I would have loved to visit Tasmania, mainly for the wildlife and scenery, which has featured on tv. I would think a reliable guide is in order for exploring. DH's uncle lived there for a long time, having emigrated out there in the 50s for work on the £10 ticket. He is now in his 90s and lives in Adelaide.
Currently, going to Australia is a bit more problematic, due to family tensions. The brother is not in DH's good books, for good reasons. They do email each other, but it is troubling. I would love to go again, but it might not happen. I know the drought situation is very bad in many areas.
Thanks everyone for keeping your fingers crossed. It all fell through at this stage last time, so we are holding our breath. I was awake in the night.
Allie - I feel your pain!
Lanette - We live in a 6 bedroom house, so we won't be doing it ourselves. :noway: The removers are estimating one huge truck and one smaller one and two days to pack. We are having them pack up this end and will take our time unpacking at the other. I hope DH will not over exert himself when we get there. I don't want injuries. We will both have to be sensible, patient and very careful. I haven't moved myself since my early twenties and would not risk my health now. Too much to lose. I do not want back/shoulder/leg injuries.
Having my hair "wet cut" today. It may be the last time I see my favourite hairdresser who I've known for over seven years. She was just a young girl when we moved here. Now she is a mother and I am a grandmother.

It was my husband's birthday ... I was all set to buy or bake a cake for him, but he wanted to do it. In Australia, it seems that people often bake their own cakes.wildhorsewendy wrote: »Machka, I am so inspired by you and how you have persevered towards your goals despite the most daunting personal setback and obstacles in your path. Oh BTW - just a technicality ...
In Australia a college is Grade 12 or Grades 11 and 12. Or sometimes a "Technical College" where you might learn a trade.
I'm in a University, where one would acquire a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, PhD, or levels in between. I'm halfway in between a Bachelor's and Master's right now.

Machka, I just went and looked for the link you said you posted in a 50+ group. I searched on the messageboard area, put in "50+" but nothing else came up. How do we go about finding this link? I see no reason why you can't post the link right here on this thread. The only links that are not allowed are ones that are advertising/profit making for someone (potentially blogs) and other competing websites to MFP, otherwise, my understanding is that links are A-okay. Am I correct in saying this, Barbara? Wendy0
