Bad advice?

For example, someone was told to lose weight she had to cut out carbs. There was no medical reason for it. Just cut out carbs and the weight will all fall off
What's the worst advice you've received? Or heard about?
That definitely is bad advice if they don't know the reason behind it!
It sounds crazy but counting calories and carb grams actually can make weight loss easier. When we eat carbs, if they are not used up immediately by exercise, we store them as fat. Not to mention, carbs need extra water to be absorbed properly. So when you cut them out, you not only lose fat, but also water weight. (The Ketogenic Diet makes use of this theory)
However, if you're doing regular exercise, carbs are still good because your body will burn them up for fuel and not store them as fat
Not to mention, going really low-carb is hard, because carbs are in almost everything!!
^ Fitting that this is in the "bad advice" thread. Because it's bad advice, and completely wrong.14 -

Hahahaha, I've heard the same thing. Also, you don't want to go heavier than 5lb dumbbells or you'll bulk up and end up with arms like a bodybuilder. Yeah, cause I'm sure Arnold Schwarzenegger curled 5lb dumbbells to get his physique....6 -

So true! The myth that a female just needs to step within a few inches of a dumbbell and she'll turn into the Hulk. Seriously, I wonder where that absolute nonsense came from. Once you're educated it's truly t laughable.6 -

It's even more laughable when you start lifting and actually trying to build muscle mass, and discover that it doesn't happen quickly, it doesn't happen easily and it doesn't happen accidentally.
There would be a lot more really, really big, muscular people (both women and men) walking around if it was as easy to 'get bulky' as some people think it is.8 -

I think it ultimately stems from the vestigial taboo against women exercising at all. You know, because we might become strong and healthy,* or temporarily lose our periods (and thus the reproductive capacity on which our value depends), or (gasp!) actually leave the house....

I saw a post on a facebook community group earlier, where a mother was complaining that Sprite is now 'lower sugar' and therefore has aspartame in it. She was angry that her kids were now unknowingly drinking aspartame and she would rather they drink sugar. SIGH2

That you must drink a tonne of water in order to lose weight.4

On the other side of the coin, when I lost a bunch of weight I had several people ask me how I did it. I could see the disappointment on their faces when I said I just count all my calories and stay in a deficit. It’s like they wanted me to give them bad advice 😜11

“Counting calories doesn’t work” is most common (though not the most entertaining) bad weight loss wisdom I encounter.
I think the bad advice I enjoy the most is the extremely specific, looong lists of requirements, as if losing weight is some sort of arcane ritual.
Guess those fruit popsicles I love so much will make the spell fall flat lol6 -

This.
I was told years ago that I had to drink my body weight in oz of water in order to lose weight. I weighed 240lbs at the time and there was no way I was going to be able to do that daily.6 -
I completely forgot this.
said to me by our practice nurse while I was having an asthma review
"make sure you work out in the mornings, dont leave it till the evening because you will be too tiered, eat food instead of work out and that food then sits in your tummy all night turning to fat because you dont work out to burn it of"
she said this to me knowing Id been going to the gym at 8pm every night for 5 months and had lost loads of weight

If you have Amazon Prime, there's a great scene in "The Incredible Ms. Maisel" that shows what was considered a "workout" for women in the late 50s (with the sole aim of getting or keeping a man, of course). I think it was the second episode of season 1.2 -

Not the 1950s I lived in. But we weren't Upper Middle Class.
TV about the 1950s is not the 1950s as the 1950s were for most. Heh.
Mom did try that vibration belt machine thing once or twice, though.4 -

I thought that it shakes the calories out of it! That's why I ask for my martinis shaken, not stirred.
I remember someone here said his/her coworker told them that if they shook the salad it would be less calories. is this what you are referring too as well? if so I remember that too lol

the one I like the most is. weight train while losing weight because building muscle takes the place of fat and muscle weighs more than fat. so you will build a lot of muscle and lose the same amount of fat.
another one is waist trainers will make you sweat more therefore burning fat if you use one when working out and it makes you lose inches faster.2 -
It's only bad advice if it doesn't work.9

They wanted you to tell them about some miracle pill or the latest fad diet.2 -

When I was in the best shape of my life I used to work out in the mornings... but I worked third shift, after the gym I would go to bed.
I have heard the don't eat before you go to bed thing several times throughout my life.2 -
I have also been told to eat breakfast to lose weight as it boosts metabolism. yeah no2

Terrible, false and somewhat frequently seen “advice”: Calories don’t matter when doing keto and/or IF.9

I felt sooooo left out I have been racking my brain trying to think of anything.
Best I have is something someone said to my sister.
Don't eat melon after your meal as all the water will flush the nutrients out.
Cheers, h.
@nutmegoreo, if you are short of pine cones, hit me up. I will swear all the neighbours pine cones land in my back garden. (Will need a percentage of profit)4 -

@middlehaitch reminded me of something someone once said, you should eat your salad AFTER the meal, all that roughage helps push the food through your intestines.5
