I'm sad to report that I didn't make it this morning to my training. I'm completely groggy and glad that I managed to reach the office. Don't know exactly why. My night wasn't that short or bad. (might be the cycle...)
But I'd like to answer this month's group question:
My dream was always to do something with my voice. I'd love to be a dubbing actor, audiobook narrator or alike. Later, when my singing talent was discovered and supported, I added becoming an opera singer to my list as well.
But I'm not an actor and I'm certainly not a fighter, which is needed to survive in that world.
Next idea was something related to music psychology. But that is not a simple course at the university...
In the end, I learned by accident that I really like working with computers and now I'm a certified IT specialist/programmer/technical writer and sing in several choirs/ensembles as a hobby and take lessons. (I'd still love to be a narrator *sighs*)7 -
5 miles this morning. Not going to comment on the weather because you already have heard it all before.

Questions of the month
What did you wanna be when you grew up?
I really don't remember career aspirations as a kid. The first time I remember thinking about what I wanted to be when I grew up was in high school. Back then I was a pretty good artist, so I thought commercial art would be good. Then realized I could never make money at it as it took me forever to complete a drawing. The next thing I remember wanting to be was being an inventor. I would come up with some product ideas, but then discover later that it has already been done. Next I got into electronics and repairing things. So went to school and became an engineer developing networking products and such. Did hardware design, PCB layout, system integration, etc. for years, then by necessity started doing software development. Continue to do all the above in a small engineering company I co-founded with a longtime co-worker. So really, I guess I did fulfill my artistic and inventor aspirations.
Why did I start running?
Never was an athletic person. In fact, have had asthma as long as I can remember. About six years ago I started daily walks, and as the months went by, I started trying to walk faster and faster since I couldn't ever run because I knew the asthma would start kicking in. But I kept thinking running slow would probably feel easier than walking really fast, so tried it for about 1/4 mile. That went well and I could still breathe, so the next time I tried 1/2 mile, then 3/4. Didn't ever have an asthma attack! "Whoa", I thought, "I think I have outgrown my asthma!". Sure enough, I kept adding distance, and my asthma never really came back. Every once in a while with bad air conditions it might cause me some problems, but it is rare.
I just kept adding mileage, and now have run 4 half marathons and am currently training for my first full.
Why do I run now?
It's just is who I am now. It has become a huge part of my life, and I can't imagine not running. It keeps me in shape, allows me time to myself, challenges me physically and mentally, and hopefully keeps me from being a grumpy old man.
Oh, and you guys. You all keep it entertaining, informative, and fun. Love y'all!10 -

Questions:
What did you wanna be when you grew up? I don’t know if I have grown up - lol. When I was a kid I wanted to be a mermaid astronaut veterinarian. I have switched careers a lot over the years. I’ve finally settled as a childrens librarian. It a great career chioce for someone who is over educated, likes to be underpaid and never wants to grow up.
2) Reasons i started running — I started as a way to shed weight. It seemed like a good way to burn a lot of calories. Then I found out how hard it was when I tried to finish C25K. I have a driven (kind of type A) personally. Running, and setting goals, gives me a healthy outlet for that. Plus, I have met many great people. I have to say that most runners are supportive and awesome people. Plus plus, I love the moving meditation qualities of a solo long slow run. Does that make sense? Plus plus plus, you can never have too many cheap medals and race t-shirts.
September goal miles = 175 / 44 miles-to-date

What did you wanna be when you grew up?
I never really knew. When I was asked this question (all the time) I always had different answers. Veterinarian was one of them. Teacher was. Computer nerd was one. Nurse. I ended up being an accountant.4 -
@amymoreorless Very well put, "moving meditation". I like it. Monthly Moving Meditation challenge thats where i need to be.7

Really wanna hit "hug" butt.... I don't wanna add to your discomfort.
Go buy new new shoes. I'm stuck in steel toe boots for work. Horrible when a pair doesn't work out like you need them too.

Today I got to run 4.12 miles, which included mile 3 of the Twin Cities Marathon course. This is my usual lake, the one closest to my house and the first one I ran all the way around earlier this year on my long run. Now it's an easy Thursday.
Picture from Wikipedia. What a dump, right? As Prince wrote "Sure as the drive around Lake of the Isles is cool I know, Rock 'n' roll will never die, like the Minnehaha flow."
I am nervous about Sunday, no two ways about it. Excited, but nervous. This morning’s run helped some: I wanted to run 4 miles at an 11 minute/mile pace, and that’s what I did. I don’t know if I felt up for another 9 miles when I was done, but I certainly felt like I could have given it a good shot.
There are pacers for 2:15 and 2:30 finish, neither of which lines up quite right with my 11 minute/mile pace, but I think starting with the slower one and seeing how I feel around mile 9 once I hit PR-land will be my best bet. I’ve never run with a pacer before, so any tips would be appreciated.
In a little bit of extra confidence boost, this morning I weighed in at my first new low since May 10th. I’ve been in a deficit for two months but it felt nice to enter that new number. I’d like to lose another 20 pounds or so, but we’ll see what life throws at me.
Q1: When I was really young I wanted to be an actress or singer or musician. When was a teenager I wanted to be a writer. In my 20s I had no idea. When I started law school I knew immediately that I wanted to be a lawyer. When I passed the bar in 2012 and spent the next six years looking for permanent work, I still wanted to be a lawyer. The last few months I’ve been doing contract work that’s a little more rewarding than what I was doing before, plus I’ve found ways to make life fulfilling outside of work, and I’m thinking about trying my hand at writing again.
Q2: I started running because I was on a general self-improvement kick, had gotten a pretty good handle on losing weight, and thought it would be fun. Turns out it is. Now I’m just trying to see how far I can go.
Ug, you all got me feeling all shmoopy now!

What did you wanna be when you grew up? A doctor (physician). But when I grew up, "girls" didn't become doctors unless they were exceptionally brilliant. Which I am not. I graduated 71st out of 490 in my high school, all college prep classes... and was told by my "career counselor" that "You could get a job in the typing pool in Washington, DC! They have nice apartment blocks for employees!" (and that gives some clue into how old I am!). So I spent the next 15 years getting married, having a child, working to make a pay check, and taking the occasional community college class. Working nights at the post office ( I understand the phrase "going postal....") motivated me to work "toward" something, and I gravitated to biology and chemistry. A (wise) female professor of Anatomy and Physiology asked me what I wanted to do. "Go to medical school....but I would be 40 when I graduated so....too old...."
"How old will you be if you don't go to medical school?" she asked.
So, I did.
Reasons I started running. I had lost about 60lbs and wanted to maintain it (and found that it made me hungrier....so actually made maintaining harder-but that's another discussion). Also got two puppies after my "old girls" (both >14) died, and they were very energetic and wanted to move (a lot) faster than my walks allowed.
Now I run to earn wine.
Ticker is my goal for 2018 and progress to date:

I'm 35 and sometimes wish I had gone to med school. I love my job and career but sometimes I wish it was a little more and I keep getting staff and patients telling me I should Ave meen a dr. I have a 2yr old and a 4yr old so med school really is out for me now but I'll still be a Dr one day - just PhD instead of MD.5 -

I'm not understanding that saying. Plus I don't understand sarcasm so I'm confused here.
Does it mean it's a dump?
To me the photo looks beautiful I would love to run there.
Glad you went out and ran, don't give in to the nervousness from the unknown. Stand your ground, that's the same feeling I always had the two days before cheerleading and I used to go over and over it in my head till a few hours before. Then 5 min into it ...was screw it, I know it, I can, here we go. It always turned out well.
Ÿou will do amazing.
I see your running and your run is Sunday.
I've always used this graph. Not because I've ever run a half, but always done long distance intervals at a 7:30 pace See what you think.
You may already have your own. This is from years ago and it's been good. Oops it pasted above. Oh well :-)
In regards to pacing, some people I know have it set on their garmin to beep when they are going to fast. i think it was the garmin. maybe someone here can shed some light on that if your garmin is compatible. Hopefully that way you can have consistency from the start and not get tired sooner than you should.
You go girl!

That was definitely sarcasm - I am amazingly fortunate to have such a beautiful place to run! As for the Prince lyric, it's from a song called "Rock'n'Roll is Alive (And it Lives in Minneapolis)". I believe he's saying that he's confident that the drive around Lake of the Isles (which is the name of the lake I ran around) is a nice one, and he's equally confidant that Rock'n'roll will never die. "Minnehaha flow" references the name of several Minneapolis landmarks, including a creek and a waterfall, which presumably will also never die.
7:30 would be waaaaaay too fast for me if we're talking minutes/mile, but minutes/k wouldn't be bad. I think the 2:30 finish pacer will be a good speed for me. I use an Apple Watch and I don't think it has that function, but I'm going to check now because that would be really useful!
ETA: It looks like pace alerts is coming in the next OS upgrade but isn't available yet. Dang!3 -
04/09 3.15 miles
05/09 3.18 miles
06/09 3.20 miles
07/09 3.17 miles - very happy to have four runs this week, the evenings have been mild and cool and no insect repellent needed.
What I wanted to be when I grew up: From a very young age I wanted to be a primary school teacher but when the time came my I didn't get accepted in to teach training college because my I wasn't fluent enough in Irish. I still studied but went in a completely different direction. I now work as a self-employed accountant/tax advisor, I really enjoy it but it can be very stressful.
Reason I run[/b]: To de-stress, nothing like fresh air to run off a bad day, also it makes me feel stronger and better about myself.

Why did I start running?
Wasn't my choice.!
My dad had me in a sport everyday after school, baseball, soccer, ping pong, hockey, mon-Thur. Since I was no good at volleyball, tennis, basketball he stuck me in running track on Fridays. Yup 5 days a week and track also on weekends plus two of my weekdays and some lunch hours close to competition. It was nasty! That was my elementary.
The funny part was the first two weeks I thought it was the most stupid thing to do. My brain was : why am I running? There is no danger, no fire or anyone chasing me. What the hell is this?
Then it changed I started to feel the wind, the moving quickly from one place to another better than walking, then I realized man my head feels clear. Such a lovely feeling, then winning happened I was wow!
The bad thing was I had no time for my friends or going out doing things with them, I wanted to be a winner it was train, train, train. Was a life of solitude after the track run. The only good thing was I never did homework.
High school well, once again sports everyday, but this time I wanted to take a drawing class Fridays. I loved graphic design the first years.
Then I started checking out the football team since the captain smiled at me every time he walked by. I thought ok let's start running again and get noticed in shorts. So, the track team was a good place to be. Since the football team practice in the centre.
Little did I know there were two things trying out that day. Running track and cheerleading. I was to busy checking out the guys when I was up to put my name down well, it was not for track. I thought holy crap! I quickly said sorry thought it was track. The captain of the football team came up said " excellent I'm jaime see you after practice" and walked away.
The girls said okay, so we have you down for cheerleading tryouts then? Two said forget about track, think of your date after with Jamie. So I gave my name and walked away so nervous. Tryouts were in a week. I told my dad he could not stop laughing. And said "and so life begins"
All I can think was oh my god, his going to see all my fats, I was running around that track everyday after my sports and first thing in the morning before class. I lost weight that week. Tryouts and interview day- They weighed me, measured me, made me dance, move on command, you name it, I felt dissected like a bug on a platter.
I passed the drills and everything everyone was happy then she goes. "You need to put on 10 lbs" . It blew my mind away all my work. She said I need to be at least 90 lbs.
well, I ate and kept running twice a week, just because it gave such a freedom and relaxed me so much. I loved running then.
The weight well, I ate and ate I could not get any heavier than 87 lbs. but I finished my last two years of high school with 87 lbs, cheerleading and the guy I liked.
University came, well first day on the track to clear my head I met another guy that invited me to run everyday around campus but doing intervals. Since he was good looking thought ok let's try it out. We did 10-13 km daily 6 days a week. With no other pressures or commitments, and could eat everything I wanted and never get to 90 lbs. The freedom and enjoyment I got out of it made a huge difference in my life. Running intervals long distance was my thing. I was hooked!
Now,
Back injury turned life upside down. These past three years are getting better and my hopes are to jog long distance intervals outside. I miss nature, moving around quicker than walking, the freedom, the clearing of my mind, the wind in my face, so many things, the being alive feeling.5 -

Thanks, that makes sense now :-)
It is beautiful!
Let's hope it's around and never dies. We need more places like that. You are very fortunate!
Oh man, that's too bad about the pace alerts. My garmin 235 doesn't do pace alerts and I was thinking of an Apple Watch.
How are you finding yours? How long have you had it? What model? Sorry lots of questions. I'm actually saving up for one.
My pace was of 7:30 based on km. I was told when I go back this time it will never be faster than 8:00 pace. And I'm ok with that. I would be grateful to get out and jog even at a 9:00 pace. As long as I'm out.
Now, I was told that there are assigned pacers on some 1/2 marathons. Maybe you should reach out to them and confirm, then on race day maybe you can run close to one that is your pace and go from there.
The chart I sent was for 1/2 marathon training chart if you didn't have one. It's so you don't over train and ease up on runs before your race day.
I've used it so I don't injure myself ie. even if I've ran 10km 5 days straight and I had a bad day on the 6th that chart kept me from exceeding distance. Just because I wanted to destress. This chart is in miles I just convert it to km but I still used it.
So passed it on just in case for you. :-)
But at least you have a beautiful watch and when iOS comes through you will have a complete and beautiful watch for your next 1/2 marathon.

Dang!
No worries! I really like the Apple Watch, especially since my husband is a full-on Apple nerd so basically all our devices are Apples and work together pretty nicely (I can use the watch to unlock my laptop, for example, or ping my phone if I can't find it). I have the Watch 3 and haven't had any issues with it on runs so far. I know some folks have run up on the battery limit but I think that was around the 5+ hours of continual use range. I got it in October when the 3 first came out. I'd guess that there are better dedicated fitness trackers, but I like having the smartwatch functions as well, so it works well for me.2 -
Oh right on. I was looking at the 3. And yes, because it's a smart watch. I'm tired of looking for my phone when someone messages. By the time I have the money saved the next one will be out. Thank you.0

Also, what I said about the battery limit was for 5+ hours using the workout function not connected to a phone. Normal daily usage I've never run out of battery if I charge it overnight.2 -
Rest day today. Since so many people have responded to my proposed monthly questions, I suppose I ought to supply my answers.
Why did you start running? In 2011, at the age of 55, I got serious about taking off some weight. I set what I considered an aggressive goal of 175 lbs., as a male 5' 11.5" tall. I had bounced off 185 a couple times just trying to not eat when I wasn't hungry and get some exercise, but this time I started tracking what I ate. The internet and computer technology made diet tracking possible for me.
When I got down to 182 lbs. in August, I was out for a 5 mile walk and felt like running a bit. Ran 200 paces, walked some, ran 200 more, walked some. Got home, and wondered if I could get in shape to run the entire 3.5 miles of the Chase (no, JP Morgan) Corporate Challenge the following May. I found a program similar to C25K, and turned myself into a runner. I became a runner, took of 20 more pounds, kept them off, and slowly realized that I was faster than people expected me to be.
Why running instead of some other form of exercise? Because it was something I could do alone, and there would be no one to laugh at me or make me look bad. Physical Education in the public schools had done a good job of teaching me that I was physically and athletically inferior to every other male of my age, pretty much any way fitness and athleticism could be measured. When it came to team sports, this was incredibly humiliating. More than three and a half decades later, I wanted nothing to do with team sports.
Why do you keep running? Somewhere on the way to my first half marathon, I fell in love with long runs. Somewhere in my history of running races, I decided that I actually liked them in spite of the crowds. After peer pressure got me to my first Boston, I decided I liked that experience, notwithstanding how incredibly extroverted it is. And somehow, in the running community I came to be both the popular kid and a jock. It's the high school experience I never had.
So, this guy who took up running because he could do it alone and there are no teams is off to run cross country next Sunday. I won't be good enough to win the age group in that field, but I'll be good enough to help my team. Life can take strange and totally unexpected turns.
I keep running because I love to run. I keep running because I love marathon training. I keep running because Boston on Patriots' Day Weekend is a really cool place to visit, and I can't justify the cost unless I run the race. I keep running because there are a lot of running experiences I enjoy, and there are some I'd like to try that I haven't got to yet. I keep running because I *can*.
Why the question? I've seen a lot of people online say they want to take up running because it burns a lot of calories. Running does indeed burn a lot of calories, but I've always thought that was a lousy reason to run. This group is full of hard core runners, and I was curious to see how many took up running just to burn calories; I expected to see that everyone who has kept running for more than a year has found a better reason than just the calorie burn.12 -
In for 50 miles again! Really missed the mark in August. I have been on vacation x 2 weeks, and have done a lot of walking but no real running.
August 6.....5.22 miles on the Monon trail. First run in 2 weeks due to being on vacation. The first 2 miles were really hard, was out of breath despite being in the zone. After 3 miles, felt better and got some sprints in. Light rain for the first mile, then it stopped. Temperature was 72 degrees, humidity at 64%, dew point was 72. Honestly felt very humid and hot.
Looking forward to seeing how everyone is doing this month.4
