My coach says since my next race is a trail race I should do my long runs on trails so I decided to do that today. Not even thinking that it's been raining every evening the past 3 nights. Pretty much a slippy slidey mudfest, but a nice run regardless. I decided to run a preview of the race route except I'm pretty sure I ran it the wrong way as I started on tech single track and ended on double wide. Meant I got to coast back to the parking lot so it was all good!

@travelling_lots the Forerunner 235 does have pace alerts. You just have to set up a workout and indicate pace as the metric to monitor.2

To be clear the Garmins, Fitbits, and others all display text messages, caller ID, and the other alerts just like a "smart watch" - I honestly did not lose a single feature that I used on the Apple Watch when I dumped it for the Gramin. Instead, I gained far superior battery life and fitness features. So for me, and for my use, it was a win-win all the way around.
What watch you wear is a VERY personal decision though, so choose wisely - but choose the one that works best for YOU no matter what anyone on this thread says4 -

Another long run fail. Started walking at 9.5 miles. So I ran/walked 4.5 miles
I’m starting to think I won’t be able to do a long run until it cools off a bit. Hopefully that’s sooner rather than later!

Hey guys. Just got back from my Saturday long run. I did 12k which is the longest I've ever run nonstop. Well mostly. I had to stop to remove a stone from my shoe. And I stopped to take this pic
That's where my first 3k part ends. It's a tough climb almost all the way but so rewarding.
I did 12k in 1hr 10 mins! Super stoked with that time. I found 9k Mark a bit of a challenge cause usually that's my last km. Of course as I progress over the next few weeks that will change lol. I did a have a little left over if I wanted to do maybe another km, but I was very happy to finish when I did lol.
@MobyCarp I started running to lose weight and get healthier - calorie burn didn't really factor in my mind specifically. I started walking, got faster, decided to run and the rest is history. I Keep running because I enjoy the challenges and am working towards a goal.9 -
@mobycarp I like your sneaky way of finding out the real reasons we run.
I started running because I’d got fat and lazy, and spent too much time staring at social media and hitting the snooze button instead of getting up and DOING something. So I’d got up to do something, tried the gym lifting weights, but it was running (via c25k) that stuck.
I lost weight, my shape changed, and people kept saying how HEALTHY I looked and how body confident and full of energy I was. And I am. I could happily lose another 20lbs, but right now I’m enjoying lifting, running and doing things I didn’t expect to be able to do without a week to recover.
I run trails because I like to hike trails, and running them lets me see more, and allows me to act like a kid, leaping over tree roots and rocks. Honestly I am a mountain goat, just my body is a bit slow on the uptake.6 -

What?
Oh my goodness.
I had no idea.
Okay, so I checked the watch your right it does.
But on the watch itself doesn't give me the option to set the pace. Just to show or not
It may be going onto the actual site. I don't have the manual, but I'm going to check it out.
Thank you!0 -

Thank you, I'm going to have to do more research, after I set up my garmin to utilize it while I save. I'll research and see which way I go. This makes a big difference.
@MegaMooseEsq I too have all my products apple. My watch was the only thing out of place. But now, I may be looking at it in a different way. :-)
Who knows with research I may just end up with a newer model of garmin when I have the money thanks to @PastorVincent

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be all the typical little girl things; ballerina, veterinarian, doctor, teacher, mom. When I got a little older, I wanted to be a rock star. In high school, I wanted to to be a nurse. I am a nurse, and I am almost done with my NP education. However, if I could do it over again, I'd be a vet for sure.
Why did you start running?
I started running by accident, really. I was doing a walking for weight loss program by John Bingham that ended with running. I was like, "what the heck is this?" I ended up quite liking it. I progressed through several of his programs and then started looking for more advanced ones. Now I use Hal Higdon programs and I am currently training for a half marathon.
Why do you keep running?
I quite like it. I'm healthier. It's alone time. It's stress relief. I can. I never thought I'd be able to.7 -
Questions of the month
What did you wanna be when you grew up?
Like others I really don't remember any specific career aspirations as a kid. I grew up on a farm and as the youngest I got all of the really pleasant jobs ( ie low skill ) Dad had 10 Square Grain Bins that he inherited from his uncle - nothing like climbing into a square bin to shovel grain into the corners to completely fill it while grain is being dumped into the bin = Grain Dust a plenty, and this was before masks or secondary ventilation were available. The other winner was cleaning the Barn and Chicken coop - nothing like Cow, pig and horse poo and some ammonia from the pigs to chase you from the farm.
The Industrial Arts teacher ( work shop, carpentry, metal fab, welding etc ) was building a score board for the school gym and I got assigned to work on it in class. More electrical and relays than electronic but that hooked me on Electronics. I was the first one in the family to go past high school so had to pay for it myself. Spent a year in the Sub-Arctic Oilfields where you only shut your vehicle off to change the engine oil, you traveled in 3 vehicle convoys with 1/2 mile between vehicles and like the Ice Road Truckers show most of the time you were only doing 10-30 Mph due to crappy roads and Ice Crossings. Many ice crossings I had both doors of the truck tied open ensuring I could bail out in a hurry. It paid for my 2 years at a Technical College ( NAIT ) for my Electronics Engineering Technologist Diploma, some say Degree. Pretty much worked in the Telecom side of Electronics every since.
Why did I start running?
As Cross training to complement my swimming, especially since the pool closes for September each year for a complete maintenance turn around, pumps, filters heaters, tiles etc. So I needed something to fill the exercise hole. Started as walk run cycles late in the evening after dark. Later in the year one of the guys in the swimming pool suggested I should do the Triathlon since I already swim and run - biking would be easy to add to the mix. So now Running is 50% of my activity, swimming 35% and biking 15%, summer is short here and the bugs are big so when you hit one at speed it's a real experience.
Why do I run now?
Not that I am any world class athlete but 2 year's ago the trail bug caught me and there is something about smushing through mud ( as @JessicaMcB said "Mud on the tires" ), getting slapped by a branch, tripping over a Spider Web that is challenging and so much fun. I have 3 events in September - all on the Bush Trails in fall conditions. Could be absolute Mud Pits, carpets of leaves, snow or the proverbial Indian Summer of beautiful but cool days providing ideal conditions.
Now to gear up and go play in the Hills, forecast rain for tomorrow so try to get a bit in tonight8 -
All the comments about women not being encouraged to get an education is breaking my heart! I just have to say - I grew up in a Christian home and my parents could not have been more proud when my brother graduated from university! My dad died just months after my brother graduated - I was 11 - but my mom absolutely kept that education torch going! They were humble farmers who wanted us to get an education!!!! (Can I use any more !!!!!) When I quit school after 2 years to get married, I think it broke my mom's heart. Fortunately, I did eventually go back and finish. A college education was something I just always assumed I would complete.
Which segways right into the question. I always wanted to be a writer. But my degree is in Finance (long story there). If I could do it all over again - I'd spend a couple years travelling because I didn't really know what my options were. Or even join the military. I might have been more focused had I done that.
@quilteryoyo - so sorry about your husband. What heartache that must be. But I'm glad you're learning how to cope and enjoy life again.
@MegaMooseEsq & @Avidkeo - beautiful pictures!
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 55/57 miles

I run because I like to eat
I keep running because I keep eating
Oh and I really like the sense of accomplishment when I run distances that all my friends think are insane.
Also, when I think about 5 miles being a “short” run when not too long ago it was my long run.9 -

and the look on your friends/families face when you tell them you pay $$$ money for Race Events to Voluntarily run that long distance in crappy weather all for a cheap metal, half a banana and a so-so tech shirt with questionable colors/design.
I think every runner goes through the transition where 5 miles (10 km for us metric system countries) becomes a short run and a 1 miler - that's not worth putting your shoes on.6 -
@GabrielleCP Come join us in the Monthly Running Challenge. Some of the people who replied to your shoe question pop in and out and the answer's they gave would have been parroted by many in this thread. Go to page 1 and have a read to decide if you are interested in this group of wonky - motivating - jokers.2

Just a short shake-out run after work, before tomorrow's half. It didn't feel the greatest, so I'm hoping tomorrow goes okay.

Really wanna hit "hug" butt.... I don't wanna add to your discomfort.
Go buy new new shoes. I'm stuck in steel toe boots for work. Horrible when a pair doesn't work out like you need them too.
Thanks I haven't given upon the new shoeshoes2 -

I have multiple iPads, MacBooks, and what not. That is exactly why I started with the Apple Watch. Bought my wife one too.1 -

Wow!
I know there were sacrifices, bad situations and horrible and scary ones too working in the oil fields. But I find it impressive and interesting. I've seen so many documentaries and I've always found interesting and have admiration for people who would go out there and do those jobs. I think it would be a fantastic experience but I would be a chicken to do it if I had an opportunity like that. Good for you, for going out there and giving it a shot.2 -
Well, I did my cardio and then walking after sunset it was dark.
I was careful in an area there are skunks. No good lighting but I was looking side to side ok, ...clear ,keep walking . next clear.. keep walking.
Came to a bench with cement legs and as I'm going to take a step, out pops mr Skunk. I froze, but he did too as he finish getting out from underneath the bench from in between the legs reason I didn't see him till last minute. We were about 11/2 metres away from each other.
I saw his tail come up and I'm like " ok, now. And saw him put his tail half down, didn't smell anything yet. Then I realized I was talking out loud to the skunk saying " Play nice! .....I'll walk this way ....you walk the other way. ....
Neither one of us stopped starring and then it slowly moved opposite from the bench.
I think that's when I realized I was holding my breath and slowly released.
All good no smell, but wow what a way to close a night.11 -

Since I got the phone I have not been able to synchronize my watch and my phone, had issues with Bluetooth yesterday so I thought maybe it's the phone. When you said about the pace alerts I went through all the settings and realize what I missed and now my phone is synchronized too.2 -

I think I wanted to be a nurse when I was small - a least that is what a drawing my mom still has from me in Kindergarten says. Later, it was a paleontologist and then an ichthyologist (I had an aquarium and decided I wanted to study fish - that was short lived though). The goal then changed to med school and pediatrics. In college, I took some psychology classes and considered psychiatry. However, I decided to not go to med school and to stick with psychology, and then I got my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. I now work for a large national mental health contractor, and I’m the Mental Health Director at my site.
I started running with a friend as a way to improve fitness and lose weight. I was an overweight and non-athletic child and teen. When I realized that running worked for me, I started signing up for races, and I just kept going from there.8 -

I have been a slacker this week, which is awful considering my marathon is this month. I just let a lot of stress get in the way.
I did get in 5 miles this morning. It felt cool out, so the run went well. Tomorrow will be my last really long run, and then I will start my taper. I feel confident from my last 20 mile run that I will finish the marathon, but I know with my slacking my time may suffer.8 -
Oh I miss those days.0

It's finally cool enough to get a decent pace going in long runs. Developed a blister around 8km, but made it home in one piece.
Upcoming races:
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k
20181118 Shanghai Marathon (maybe)7 -
I didn't post yesterdays miles. It's a PIA on my phone. LOL
9/6 3.45
9/7 3.1
Total 6.55 /100
I was a little slower than I would have liked yesterday but I had less snot than on Wednesday so I guess it's a win? LOL Seem to be mostly over the sinus infection. Also, it's been only 80 degrees at 4:30 am!
To get back on track I am scheduled for 14 miles tomorrow. My goal is to run/walk/crawl those. And if I finish 14 miles I am ending at Starbucks and getting a salted caramel mocha. And maybe some cookies if they have the goodie girl mint thins.8 -
Excellent article on running/mental health. Teared up a bit at the end https://www.runnersworld.com/runners-stories/a22997220/rob-krars-greatest-victory/
Also, if you haven't seen the new Oiselle video, also made me tear up. For different reasons.3
