9/30 Wineglass Marathon
Fortunately, my neighborhood is quite safe. I don’t run a lot in the dark, but if I do, I carry a headlamp, wear glowing arm bands, and carry a whistle. I won’t listen to music while it is dark so that I don’t miss something potentially dangerous that I can’t see.4 -
@travelling_lots I didn't take any offense. You just said that pepper spray was illegal and I was just saying it isn't illegal in the US. I didn't realize that it was illegal in Canada. I kind of thought that everyone there carried bear spray. Lol. I was just answering a question about what do you do to feel safe when running. I don't feel unsafe running, but I do sometimes see loose dogs and that is my biggest fear when running and why I carry pepper spray.7

6.7 today. I waited until late but the temps lingered near 90. Had to stop a few times and walk as I think I went out too fast for the heat/humidity/dew point. Looking forward to cooler temps.

Re: running safety, I am lucky to live in an area where I feel reasonably safe. I usually run the bulk of my distances in a park anyway, so it's just the to and from the park that I might worry about (which I don't, but my better half is paranoid about it all the time). The roads are populated with strolling senior citizens well into the night and well before dawn, and the most aggressive wild animal that ever attacked me was a wasp. I do get barked at/chased by four-legged domestic creatures all the time - for some reason in China it hasn't caught on that people actually need to train their dogs, but nothing a well-aimed kick or a hundred meter sprint can't handle. Traffic is another story however, so I wear one of those shiny reflective vest things in the dark, and assume at all times that the car doesn't see me.
When in other countries, I stick to running in daylight, in well-established running areas, and preferably with other people. That last part rarely works out for some reason.girlinahat wrote: »so I'm still here.....but my mojo isn't.
Struggling to get up in the morning to run, can't be bothered to exercise in the evening. Keep cancelling the gym.
Something needs to shift. All suggestions welcome. I think this is still post-marathon blues, but it's gone on for long enough.
Having some trouble with mojo here as well. I can't get up in the morning, and I work until ungodly hours at night, so I can't get up the next morning, and round and round.
I'm thinking about working my run into my commute. It's about 10km from home to office, and about half of that I can cut through parks to avoid traffic. Logistics with clothes, shoes, shower, computer and lunch will be a pain however, so I still haven't made up my mind.6 -

Grizzlies are around the area but not anywhere near town - to many open agriculture fields and they prefer being in the tree's. It's always black bears. If you are paying attention you can see the signs of bear activity before you encounter them, Ant Hills Dug up, Scat piles with in season fruit visible, Bear Tracks at the water holes, that certain unmistakable smell that say's they are close by. Most of the Fall Wild Berries just finished and all they really have left in the wild are Rose Hips so if you see a black thing in the middle of a rose patch, give them some room. They will wander into farmers fields - especially soy beans, peas and oats for a big feast. Cattle farmers that feed supplements have found them inside their Feed stations cleaning out the last morsels, especially if they had any salt - mineral blocks.
6.8 km of Trail Hunting in the trees tonight.
Not sure I would call it a run as I was looking for a few connector routes so lots of time walking and trying to map out exactly where I was versus where I wanted to be. Still got to get out and play. Need to organize a mini workbee to build one creek crossing ( 5 ft deep washout that is 6-12 ft wide ) that gives access to a 5km loop and a 15-20k 2nd route. I can jump it but if my plant foot ever slips I will be very wet and possibly injured. The other end of this water course at the bottom of the valley varies from 1ft to 10ft wide x 2ft deep so it is either a mad rush of water or a lazy meandering creek. last year you could cross it anywhere - this spring had a mega waterflow so lots of erosion and natural bridges were washed out. Tomorrw night one of the last events of the year for me - Roots and Ruts 10km trail race with 3-4 km on very rough undeveloped trails - more swamp navigating than trail running.

@midwesterner85 - - I love fried pickles and beer....hmmm not sure I want to travel that far for a short short short race though!
@biketheworld and @rusgolden - I had to look up that race. It looks like so much fun! I love the previous medal of Dorothy's ruby slippers! Adding it to my bucket list of races to maybe travel to!
@mobycarp - OH NO!!! I hope your ankle is fine when you get up in the morning! Maybe it is just a weird ghost taper ache and will go away!!
On the running safety - I don't run at night because I am afraid I will trip on our uneven sidewalks (I have tried and tripped previously so not an unreasonable fear). During the day I can run on the street and avoid the sidewalks until I get over to the paved trail, but it closes at sundown.
We do have a number of homeless but since they closed down the large camp along the river here it is much better. I smile and say hello to everyone figuring if I am nice to them they would come to my aid if I ever needed it.
I am mostly afraid of other dogs. I haven't seen many loose lately but we have many owners who can't control them and they come after Hobbes. Like @ContraryMaryMary, we have many who use the retractable leashes while they are walking and texting on their phones and paying no attention. They are also typically the ones who don't clean up after their dogs because they don't even notice that they have pooped!
@RunRachelleRun - One of the most effective devices I have found for deterring animals and people is a small air horn. It makes a very loud unexpected sound and is small and light enough to easily carry. It was recommended by an Animal Control officer when we were having some problems with loose dogs and coyotes along the trail.
ETA - you can get them on Amazon or at a Marine/Boating supply store5 -
I didn't think I was going to run today because I had an appointment in the morning. When I went to bed I decided I would get up and just give getting out early a shot. It was a really nice run with the marine layer keeping it cool (and humid). The sun came out on the last mile or so heading home which warmed things up pretty quickly. I was soaked when I got home but so happy to have gotten it in and done. The only issues I had was my sunglasses kept fogging up and there were so many people (walkers, cyclists people with dogs and strollers) to dodge so maybe getting out even a bit earlier would be better before the crowds! It was surprising for a Thursday morning to see so many people out.

The same company @kgirlinhart linked to also sold a small alarm, which may be the best solution. That would likely scare an animal if it is loud enough. And hopefully attract human attention if in other trouble.
@travelling_lots I am in Maple Ridge. We have the mountains just to our north and a lot of agricultural land with berry farms. We get our fair share of wild creatures and a lot of loose dogs.
@RunRachelleRun maple ridge is a beautiful area. And still pretty safe. Mind you wild life would be an issue with open agricultural land.
With the expansion of different trains and transit system they’re should be a big change in that too in the next 2-5 years and hopefully better patrolled too. I was actually looking in that area to buy a house.
@ContraryMaryMary my area has tones of those people walking dogs on retractable leads. Some are big dogs and I’ve seen how they don’t care how people are intimidated but these big dogs running around with leads 12 feet long and if something happens the owners won’t be able to handle the big dog in time.
I constantly cross the street because I don’t know which jack *kitten* knows how to walk the dog properly and can actually control them.3 -

@kgirlhart I’m glad you didn’t take offence. Was never intended to offend.
Here the laws of pepper spray is one but even more strict on bear spray. They fall under two different categories due to the damage of the attack it potentially can do. Bear spray your aloud to carry only in the woods aimed st bears only. I’m not completely familiar with the rule to explain it unfortunately.
Pepper spray is for fox, coyote, wild dog but used as last resort. Like everything in Canada our laws are tougher with hopes people think twice if they are going to use them and hurt others or themselves.
@ContraryMaryMary that’s my issues with runs/walks are skunks and foxes, coyote but lots of dogs not friendly on long retractable leads with little or no control of their owners. I keep crossing over to the other street not sure what else to do on that one.4 -

dogs in harnesses on retractable leads. Another pet hate. I was told to 'watch where I was going' by a woman on a busy train platform with a dog on a piano wire thickness retractable lead far away from her. Unfortunately I didn't have time to stop and tell her what I thought.
Dogs on body harnesses get me. Big dogs. Muscly dogs. Unless it's a chest clip harness or halti-style, you aren't going to be able to control that dog if it makes a run for a rabbit.
We have limited dogs on leads laws here, only in some public parks and beaches during the summer, so for the most part the dog can run free, which is better than a retractable lead, because that's what training a dog is for. I WANT dogs to have off-lead time, it's good for their mental health, but please train them!!!4 -
Thanks for the comments and support on lost mojo. @MegaMooseEsq I think it was you who made me think long and hard about goals and why I keep cancelling gym time. This last week has been about me getting ready to go on holiday, but that shouldn’t be an excuse because if I have enough time to relax and watch tv. Then I have enough time to go to the gym. Small goals, daily goals perhaps.
I’m going to spend the next couple of weeks thinking about goals. I’m visiting my sister who lives a healthy vegetarian plenty of outdoorsy stuff lifestyle so am hoping I can get some inspiration from her. And maybe being forced into some unfamiliar social situations with her friends might make me feel less anxious (because that’s what I think it is in part) about going to a gym session or doing activities with others.
I’m also going to spend the next couple of weeks enjoying myself and doing lots of fun stuff, but who turned the heating off?

4 miles this morning, just before the rain started. Guess that is why it was so humid, but not sure why that is the entire reason it felt SO HARD. Didn't go fast, just felt tired. Oh well, I got the work in anyway.

1) i don't run with dogs because i'm afraid, i run with them because i am aware of where i live. same if i ran with a ccw. i don't want to but i will not be a victim. there are more assaults than sexual and even then we have had more than a few stranger/victim sexual assaults this summer. it is also why i run with the bare minimum. bags, id, phone. phone is tucked away. it is part of the reason i don't run with headphones.
2) my dogs run on a harness. it can cause damage to a dogs neck to run on a collar. canicross often has their dogs run in full sled harness as that is where the sport originated.
the one i use slides and tightens and i've never had an issue controlling any of the dogs. from a 10lb-90lb doghere is a view of the harnesses i use3) retractable leashes are stupid and are injuries waiting to happen
these work well in comparison to the step into harnesses especially with the foster dogs. these start over the head and then "paw""other paw"
4) fell asleep, no run last night. will try to get one in this evening. 5 tonight, 5 tomorrow, 10 sunday. 10 sounds so much more reasonable after last weeks 14ish. but maybe not after 5&54 -

Re: dogs on retractable leashes
Those dog owners who have not properly trained their dogs to walk WITH them and put them on those retractable leashes make me so angry. Not only because they lunge at you and trip you up when running. My husband and I adopted a severely abused young Australian Sheppard mix 8 years ago. Her ribs were so badly broken from being kicked that you can still feel where they healed wrong if you run your hand down her right side. It took a lot of intensive training to get rid of her fear response. She is very sweet and VERY well trained but she gets really nervous if any animal or person just comes barreling up to her. I have trained her to sit next to me and let me sheild her from the stressor. It is super hard to stop her nervousness when the other dog is jumping at us and the owner is loudly telling me it’s fine because their dog is “nice”. Ugh. Train your dogs people!

@mbaker566 oh yes - canicross harnesses are a different ballgame and as you suggest are similar to sled harnesses. They usually had stretchy bits too if I'm not mistaken? (and are easy to release from a waist strap).
Having said that, anyone who runs with their dog on a harness knows what they are doing and what the dog is capable of. It's the people with large muscular (or just plain fat - that's my other dog-related hate, fat dogs) dogs unable to control them that I reserve bile for.0
