WOMEN AGES 50 + FOR NOVEMBER 2018

Paige - I have a daughter getting married next summer, isn't it a great motivator for us to get healthier?
Cheryl - I used to have a fitbit but developed an allergy to the band. I now only use my phone too, but too often find it sitting on a counter not tracking my steps. I am looking at a Leaf now, my daughter has one and likes it.
Kim - You are a good daughter for trying to please your Mom regarding your brother, I'm not sure I could do it if I were in your shoes.
Barbara - What is SWSY?
Karen - I used to have a book that explained dreams to me as I have some vivid ones that I tend to ponder on all day. I haven't looked up meanings of dreams in ages though.
Kelly - My job will be ending on December 7th. I'm not surprised, I have not been able to get any business here at all even with my selling attempts. I had to drive to Calgary on Monday to pick up my notice letter. I was told last week my last day would be Nov 9th, but they gave me a month's notice which I am extremely grateful for! I met my husband when I was 13 - we dated for a summer as much as my parents allowed, he was 17. My Dad was not amused. We broke up and then got back together when I was 18. I was living with my boyfriend at the time in Ontario and he (my husband) asked to stay with us until he found a job and his own place. He arrived in late January by the beginning of March I had broken up with my boyfriend and Rodger and I were married in June. 31 years in so far. I don't think my Dad ever did approve completely of my choice.
Carol Ann - I understand your getting to know us statement. I followed this board for about 2 months before ever commenting. I kept coming back to see how @Machka's husband was and what had happened. I started reading the April thread but it was probably late May when I commented.
Allie - My Dad was the biggest family man I ever knew. We grew up visiting family every Sunday. We would spend the day driving going to different Aunts/Uncles and Great Aunts/Uncles. I used to know my family really well both my Mother's and my Father's sides. Now I don't live near most of them and when they come to visit some of their immediate family that is near me they don't even take time to allow me to visit. I find it very hurtful truthfully and they are actually just the older part of my generation.
I am behind the ball on the Gratitude List so will catch up
1 Smell - My absolute favourite smell is a freshly bathed baby or child.
2 Technology - I have to say the internet, it allows me to connect so much easier to family and friends in NB
3 Colour - I love the deep oranges and yellows of a Maritime Fall, I miss it so.
4 Food - This is a tough one for me as I am not a real foodie. I guess I would have to say eggs, because they are so quick, easy and versatile
5 Sound - My Mother recorded a book, Frosty the Snowman, for my Grandson in 2015. Every time one of the grandchildren listens to that book I get to hear my Mother's voice. At one point in it my Mom clears her throat, my 2 year old Granddaughter thinks it's part of the story and mimics it as much as she yells Stop at another part of the book. I treasure that book and truly wish I had one of my Grandparents and Dad reading one. If you have grandchildren it's a treasured gift.
6 Nature - I miss walking in the woods, I didn't realize how much I missed it until I visited the Ancient Forest this summer with my best friend and her family. I grew up in the forest and miss it terribly
7 Memory - Oh what a question, there are so many memories with so many people. One of my memories that has never left was when I was little, I think around 3 or 4. I had a little toy Water Pump, the old fashioned kind that people used to get water into the house. The base of it held water and you pumped the handle to get the water up into a little pail. I remember the sun on my face as my Grandfather sat with me on the porch and played this with me for what seemed like hours.

Lashing it down with rain out there! Really windy too. We are nice and warm inside and I am making chicken, lentil and spinach curry for dinner.
Poor DH is very poorly with his cold, which has gone to his chest. Hope he picks up before we go over to babysit tomorrow.
We have the aerial man coming in the morning to sort out the aerial and three TVs. We are also expecting the new freezer to be delivered and I'm hoping it arrives before 2.15 when we set out for my son's house. If not, one of us will have to stay behind and the other one do the school pick up.
I intend to have fish and chips with the kids tomorrow night and take the left over curry with us for Friday night. We have been sent a long diary of activities that the kids do, like tennis, violin, book club, computer programming etc etc. Got to remember to take the equipment for the school drop off on Friday. Ooouuufff! I'm expecting to be KNACKERED by the time the other grandparents arrive on Saturday!
Managed to clear the dining table today and find a place for a few more things. I like having a clear table. I've said it before but, I HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF. :noway:
Been exploring the little shops at the top of the road. Some useful things.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx5 -

Machka: I wonder what tipped the apple cart over here on MFP. I’m glad I can record my food and find my friends. Right now that is the most important part of it all for me.
Janet: What a wonderful birthday card from Callie. WOW!!! Happy Birthday!
KJ: Oregon is a vote by mail state & we turned in our ballots last week. They’ll count them all after polls close. There seems to be lots of crackpots running for office this year. :ohwell: There are also some very good people. :flowerforyou:
Lisa: I love this quotation, “Only love can be divided endlessly and still not diminish." It is a gift and you may see me post it now and then. Thank you!
Heather: You sound all cozied in at your new place, even though you likely still have things to do to get settled in. I love hot soup on a dark & rainy evening. (We also have too much stuff.) :ohwell:
Yesterday DH & I went clothes shopping for me and for him. I got two new pairs of jeans and two new tops. He got a new pair of pants. We were lucky to find things we liked at sale prices. We also bought a pair of drapery pullers for the RV. It will make closing the front curtains at night and opening them in the morning much easier. Yay! Regarding the election, I was able to find the city, county & state races on the internet last night and all of my candidates & ballot measures were successful. I’m happy with the outcome.

Today I am grateful for this site, and also for election results that I like.

I think it was a great experience for him and it opened my eyes to some of the process. Fortunately his campaign was not that expensive. I think that is what bothers me the most is how much is spent to try and get into office. The person he ran against spent 10x as much as he did. I would be for each candidate have a set limit to spend and it be the same for each. Focus on where they stand on the issues and not try to smear the other person. DH was not in that kind of race. He didn't do ads on TV.5 -
Whew, finally caught up.
Re: voting. The big one in GA was the governor's race. Very contentious becasue one of the candidates is also Secretary of State and supervises elections...conflict of interest??!!! His opponent, who would be the first African American governor in GA hasn't conceded yet and I tend to agree with her.
Love the daily gratitude:
Smell: The ocean
Technology: Skype
Color: British racing green or light pink (big range there!)
Food: All of them Breads/pastries/desserts
Sound: Silence
Nature: I love the desert
Memory: Meeting my husband
Short Bio for the newbies: I'm 54, married (for 3.5 years-so, newlyweds) and have lived in Decatur, GA for 22+ years. University administrator for 21 years. We have 2 cats and a 4.5 month old corgi puppy PIc is of him at 10 weeks and 18 weeks. Handsome fella holding him is my DH. My weight inched up as I aged. Many attempts at losing weight/getting fit failed. The only thing that has worked is MFP. I swore I would never count calories and it turns out that was key I work out with a personal trainer two times a week and get to the gym at least 3 other times a week. WHile I'd still like to lose another 10 pounds, I'm being practical and will work on maintaining during the holidays.

Happy Wednesday - Got in a great 4 mile interval workout last night before dark. Felt awesome, logged all of my calories for the day and stayed within my boundaries.
Cleaned out the closet looking for clothes to wear to work, loaded 4 garbage bags of clothes to big, no more size 16 or 14. Staying at 10 or 12 and I am glad I saved clothes, it is like having a whole new wardrobe pulling out the clothes I haven't worn for a few years.
Stuck at my 37lb loss the last 2 weeks. 3 more lbs to hit my goal, but would like to maybe lose 10 more after that.
Welcome to the newbies Tanya, Paige, and Cheryl (as for the fitbit I have the Ionic and I love it, my sons gave it to me for my birthday since my other one stopped working after 3 years) Great place for words of encouragement.
Barb - Good luck with the remodeling will look awesome when it's completed, it the process of getting there that is nerve racking. Hope your hubby feels better.
Elizabeth - your Corgi is adorable
Margaret - sorry your hubby lost
Heather - hope your hubby gets better, I am sure the rainy weather doesn't help much. Give him lost of TLC!!
Thank you everyone for sharing your stories it is awesome knowing others are in the same situation struggling with weight gains. Going to try to get another 4 miles in tonight after work.

I see this is a busy busy thread!! Will do my best to keep up 🤓🤓 I came to Italy to study for 6 months."... 34 years ago 😆😆😆 like many before me, I feel in love with the place then with hubby. I was in the shoe business for 20 years, and now I give my BIL a hand in our clothing and shoe store.
My family is important to me.... That includes my hubby , my son and my daughter in law...and my sister in law. She is a woman with Down's Syndrome and she has been living with us since my mil passed away 9 years ago.
In nature... How is it possible to limit the gratitude? Tuscan countryside still awes me, and today we even had a rainbow!

Cheryl in Florida - I too, at least as far back as I can remember have been in some sort of weight loss/ gain mode, .. I did weight watchers for like forever. I too am 62, and I am just beginning to wean my way away from WW . I did well with them when I was younger, but at this point I would really like to get away from Good/Bad foods, and learn how to balance. One day at a t time4

Gratitude:
Smell: I can not smell these days, strange. I can smell coffee though.💗
Technology: I do not own a cell phone, and I still love answering our 1957 black rotary phone!
Color: lime green, or a coastal blue green.
Food: Mexican food
Sound: my son's laughter, (Its a heehaw kind of snorting).
Nature: a quiet sunny beach, and a rainy blustery day!
Memory: I have to ponder this one!2 -
Memory ... I am very grateful that I have so many beautiful memories ... while some are very sad, even traumatic, they are balanced by many filled with laughter and love. This time of the year, I'm always thinking about my paternal grandmother. She was a wonderful cook and she always tasked me with helping her stuff the Thanksgiving turkey. It's been 25 years since she passed, but I can hear her voice as plain as day as we prepared "poor old Tom Turkey."

Barbie- I love the simplicity of your life! I know you meditate regularly; do you think the simplicity is due to the meditation or were you always a "less is more" type of person?
Most of my life has been an odd combination of "pack rat" and "less is more". I was raised by parents who grew up during the depression and taught me "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" so I kept and reused many things and had difficulty letting things go. My father taught me that "the way to save money was to not spend it". Little by little I have found ways to do well with less but not to an extreme. I didn't start meditating in earnest until I read "10% Happier" a few years ago. I learned more about how my life would be better with less by listening to podcasts from "The Minimalists". Daily gratitude practices have contributed to my feeling of well being with what I have and that what I have is enough.

All of the memories are so sweet.
It is funny - I was (I confess) playing Christmas music this morning and got all choked up all of a sudden. This will be my first Christmas without my parents. Lost my dad a couple of years ago and my mom just this past March. I don't think I got to grieve the loss of my dad as I was so busy taking care of mom who had multiple myeloma (which I would not have given up for anything in the world!). Being a 55 year old orphan is really weird!
I have so many precious memories. The one that come to my mind is with my Dad - I'm much more like my Dad - I have his brown eyes which he always said meant that we were both full of sh**! I went with my Dad nearly every Sunday morning and caddied for him on the golf course. I drove the golf cart and kept track of the balls and learned how to keep score. His friends were very tolerant of me and always apologized for cursing (probably why I talk like a sailor!!). Those early mornings on the golf course with the dew on the grass where the best.
He is especially on my mind with Veteran's day being right around the corner. He was a solider in the Korean War - and for those of you who know about these things - he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for taking a hill from some very mean Chinese (Dad's words). I was...and still am...my daddy's girl.

But I will remember all the wonderful memories that we made over the years....4 -
Good grief! 200+ posts. I will skim over them, lol!
Gratitude diary:
5) Sound - the sound of hubby snoring in the middle of the night. Very reassuring
6) In Nature - walking along the coastline which is just a mile from my home.
7) Memory - nursing my 11 day old granddaughter at 6 am on her first Christmas morning.0 -

Retired now, but have taught at UGA and Piedmont, Athens Campus. I live in Jefferson. Peach Carol is also a retired teacher from Georgia.
Will our hot mess of an election ever be over? I just hope that whatever the outcome, the winner remembers how close the election was and governs for the best of all of us.

Did Denise Austin’s Boot Camp DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jari Love’s Ripped and Chiseled DVD.
Vince was playing with the laser pointer with Clyde and out from behind the couch comes Shadow! We have no idea how she got there. You could see she was somewhat conflicted. She wanted to be in the living room yet that meant that she would have to be with the other cats. Everyone watched everyone else. Hopefully, she’ll eventually get to the point where she tolerates our cats.
Steve left. I know that he’d like for us to stay at his house, but there’s really no reason now for us to go up that far. Denise is in DE at the very southern tip of the state.
Barbie – good to hear that you’re back on the bike!
Denise called yesterday. She went for a genetic testing and there isn’t a problem. I don’t remember ever going for genetic testing…but then again medicine has changed. She got a picture of her sonogram. The MD THINKS that it’s a girl. But I told her that even if the doctor says it’s a girl, you can never be 100% sure until you deliver. Vince didn’t know it, but at times they do make a mistake.
Lisa – I’m sorry about your mother. How old were you?
Jo – great getting rid of those clothes. Feels good, huh?
Paige – while we were at ceramics tonight, we were listening to TSO’s Christmas songs. I’m so sorry about your parents
Cindy – welcome! Great loss, by coming here you’ll keep it up

My simple life got a bit more complicated by the discovery of mold and water damage in the wall between the stove and the water heater. Jake's cataract surgery on his other eye will be Tuesday so that adds three more doctor appointments that require me to be the driver. We're having a custom cabinet built to replace the section where the double oven was and that won't be ready for 6-7 weeks. The stove will probably be installed next week. The hot water will be off for a day or two while repairs are being made to the space occupied by the water heater. Poor Bernie hides under the bed the whole time the workers are here. This is a simple small remodel and an uncomplicated medical procedure. I can't imagine what it would be like for something bigger than this.
A local measure on our ballot that was very important was defeated.
I have only three more daffodil bulbs to plant.

NYKaren - What a dream!i felt twinges of my own as I read your description! I hope you get some real-life hugs today! My memory of my second child, who was born after her dad was allowed in the labor room (Not delivery, though.), when they laid her on my chest to rest while the doctor took care of other business, was very special indeed. We knew each other from the start.
Lanette, I have severe osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, and there does seem to be a sugar connection. However, my rheumatologist identified the worst culprit - interrupted sleep. He claimed we don’t wake up because we hurt…we hurt because we wake up. I now take a very mild sleeping medicine and my pain is down to less than half most days.
Katla! Whine away! We can always scroll down! 😉
Barbara, AHMOD, cougars? You must live further into the “wild ‘n woolies” than I’d envisioned. I’m on a mountain in the middle of a state forest and my neighbors have only seen one once in 20 years we’ve been here. Whoo!
Beth near Buffalo - Oh no! Although I DO hate walking on eggshells, I’m always afraid I’ll be the first to dent a new(ish) car. Better them than me!
Oh dear, Jo! Sounds like an ill wind!
I have a song chorus running in my head! It goes, “Scatterin’ lime on the septic tank! Scatterin’ lime on the septic tank! Scatterin’ lime on the Septic Tank! To make it all grow green, Oh!” Don’t ask where that came from, just pick your own tune and sing along. A great song for scrubbing the toilet.

Barbie, iDO hope your husband’s cataract surgery goes well! It was such a revelation to be able to see perfectly without glasses again. Don’t skip all the eye drops, though! They’re very important.
Carol Ann, Welcome! I too am 75, and a former Buckeye (resident of Ohio)! I also have kitties much younger than yours, 8 and almost 4.
Oh, Rebecca! Suki has the perfect backdrop for “The Sound of Music”!
Janet, you look great. I hope my results will be as good as yours. Your flowers are just lovely. Many many happy returns of the day!
Karen in VA - I do SO miss thunderstorms! It’s not that we don’t have them here, but they’re a pale imitation of the ones in summer in Ohio. That being said, we had one last fall here that was the most intense and dramatic I’ve ever seen. It lasted for six or seven hours off and on, with several strikes I could see through my acrylic roof on my sleeping porch that appeared to be directly overhead. We had the internet knocked out all over our community here on the mountainside due to a fried router in the main office, and several tree strikes just behind my and the neighbors’ house. It would diminish a little, then roar back to life with assaults of rain and bolts coming closer and closer, then lumbering off to the north to terrorize the rest of the Puget Sound Area. What an experience!

Hi Gals,
Good to hear from everyone – its fun to read the gratitude’s all with the same theme, yet so different.
Today the car was at the repair guy’s and I’m $441 poorer tonight but it is working better, there is an additional $600 repair that needs to be done but I can wait 3-4 months, so I will. Got a lot of embroidery done today but have a bunch more to do, so will work tonight.
Hugs to those who need them (that’s all of us), cheers, and support to all as well.
November Gratitude’s
1. Smell = clean dog
2. Technology = smart phone
3. Color = sunrise
4. Food = herbal tea
5. Sound = silence, but heard the coyotes talking, and loved hearing them
6. Nature = the waves
7. Memories = I think one of my favorite memories, is a conglomerate of memories – in the summer when I was a kid – Dad and I would go out to the grass to “pull weeds” we would pull a few, but really we would look at the clouds and point out the things we saw, or make up stories about were the airplanes were going overhead, who was in them… We were not in a flight path but way way high you would see a plane occasionally. And sometimes a small plane those were even more fun to make up stories about.

I have very negative childhood memories but I have fond memories of watching my children learn how to play hockey at the early age of three. They could hardly skate and when they lifted their stick to hit the puck they would tip over like dominos. It was funny to watch as most all of them would be scrambling to get back up off of the ice
Sarah4 -
My sister-in-law posted this and I thought it was good ...
So ...
Nov 1 - my roses.
Nov 2 - social media and staying connected with family and friends.
Nov 3 - blue. The blue of the mouth of the river/bay/start of the ocean out my window. The blue of the sky. My new blue sleeping top that was nice and comfy last night.
Nov 4 - food ... cheese. I ate a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches when my husband was in hospital. They were my comfort food. Also cheese has calcium which I think I need. Unfortunately, cheese does tend to be a bit high in calories so I shouldn't eat too much of it. But anything cheese-y is comforting.
Nov 5 - sound. I like listening to the waves and the birds, but I think the sound I'm most grateful for today is my husband's voice. Just the fact that we can talk to each other again.
Nov 6 - "What in nature are you grateful for?" ... That's hard to narrow down to one thing. Oxford dictionary describes nature as "the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth". I am grateful for all of it. I find that getting out into any sort of nature helps to relieve stress.
Nov 7 - "What memory are you grateful for?" ... Another one with so many choices!!! Recently, I've been grateful for two memories. 1) June 2017 ... my husband and I had a wonderful visit to Canada and did several things to make great memories ... hiking, cycling, visiting my family. I clung onto those memories during the months he was in hospital. 2) When I was 9 years old, my family moved away from where my grandmother lived. One of of the last days there, my grandmother took me to her window and showed me a full moon outside. She told me that on every full moon, we could both look at it and know that even though we were far apart, we were both looking at the same moon. That's a memory which has stuck with me all these years, and every time I see a full moon, I think of my grandmother. She's 97 years old ... but not doing so well ... so I've been thinking of her a lot. And I've also been very glad that my husband and I were able to see her when we visited Canada in June 2017.

I've enjoyed reading all your memories.

Lanette, your elevation down there is about the same as mine here in Issaquah. And if I don’t actually GET snow, I can always see it on the slope of Tiger Mountain above us. So beautiful!
Lisa in AR, Allie & KJ (Kelly), what wonderful memories! And you tell them with truly touching simplicity. I teared up at all. Allie, I remember Sardines very well, and trying to suppress giggles when we were hiding together. Also Monster Tag played out of doors on summer evenings with “it” carrying a flashlight, and had to hold it on you for 3 seconds for you to be out. That got to be a LOT more interesting when we were about 12 or 13. I got my first kiss during a game of Monster Tag!
Cindy, Welcome. Do check with your doctor about protein levels. It really helps keep hunger away when I get plenty of protein.
Rita, I hope you were warmer than you look! I love Skype and FaceTime!
Elizabeth, both the corgi and your spouse are darling.
Welcome, Rene! We are indeed a talkative bunch! Tuscany is on my Post Weight Loss List.
Margaret, my second husband ran for school board once in a small town in Oregon. This was the early 70s, and he came in 2nd out of four because his hair was over his ears and he had a mustache, lol! I don’t know what they’d have made of my late dearest. He had a Santa Claus length white beard and long silver hair below his shoulder blades, and he rode a motorcycle. He was also a house-husband. I was a Teamster, had short curly hair then, and lived my family, but loved working too. We were a perfect pair.
Paige, I honor your dad’s memory. The Korean War was a Big Scary Thing when I was a girl. My cousin served in that one as a pilot. We lost a lot of them, but it was men like your dad, on the ground in the bitter winter cold who held the line and defended those hills. Tough job.
Barbie, I know it’s a pain, but I’m glad you found that mold and water damage. It can wreak havoc if it’s not found. Hurrah for the last 3 daffodil bulbs. I love that mine come up and spread a bit more every year.
Sarah, I’m glad you gave your children happy memories! I’ve tried hard to do that with mine and with my grandkids with skywatch parties to watch meteor showers, camping trips complete with ending sleeping in the car because I’d pitched our tent in a beautiful grassy spot between 4 trees that also happened to be the lowest spot in the campground when the rain came. So many adventures! My mom taught me to see the adventure in everything and to make my own when life felt too dull. She’d but my brother and I a bag of White Castle hamburgers and take us down to the little river near our house and teach us to skip stones.

Me ... these days ...
(And incidentally, no, Tasmanian Devils don't actually spin. )
Every time I think I'm getting on top of things ... there's more!! I hardly know where to begin.
One of the things that has happened is that my husband's good carer has left to spend some time with her mother who isn't doing so well with her health. I didn't realise how much I'd miss her!! We're at Thursday, so it has been 3.5 days without her and I want her back!! She was organised and had several things under control ... now I'm having to do those things. Also, we have one carer who we met about 6 weeks ago, and she's all right but so far doesn't do a whole lot ... then last night we had to meet another carer who seems nice enough, but just a bit scattered.
So on top of everything else, I'm trying to coordinate their hours based on their availability and personality ... as in, who is most likely to take him for a walk or help him in the garden, and when. Things like that.
Machka in Oz4 -
I'm having a stressful time. My adult sons moved in with me. I worry about my younger son since he just changed jobs. I started a new exercise routine at the gym since I was given the ok to exercise after an injury. I've join MFP when I shifted to maintenance mode. I'm eating less than I should. I lost three pounds the last two weeks of October, but the weight loss has stalled since.4
