Y’all, it’s time for the January 2019 Running Challenge!
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the December 2018 Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10709529/december-2018-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until January 1, 2019 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running ). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Monthly question are posed to encourage participation and as a way for us to get to know one another. So, if you have one don’t hesitate!
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
• Use the link that ends in .png
• Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
• Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
• YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.
“I often hear someone say I’m not a real runner. We are all runners, some just run faster than others. I never met a fake runner.” – Bart Yasso
“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” – Confucius
"We all know that if you run, you are pretty much choosing a life of success because of it.” – Deena Kastor
“Most people run a race to see who is fastest. I run a race to see who has the most guts.” – Steve Prefontaine
“Get going … walk if you have to, but finish the damned race.” – Ron Hill
"If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run." - John Bingham
If you would like to join a team to cumulatively run 2019 miles in 2019. C’mon, it’ll be fun!

I'm going with 60 this month.2

@Elise4270 Can you edit the subject and put Monthly Running Challange in it as per normal to help people find it?3

I'm going to stay with 100k and hope the weather permits me to do more. December was an unbelievable running month weather wise, but I suspect January will be more like the norm.4

First thread of 2019! My current running goals for 2019 are:
1) Improve my 10K road race time
2) Try trail racing
3) Run at least 2 half marathons
4) Run at least 100 miles in a month
5) Run more than 500 miles in the year
My running-adjacent physical fitness goals are:
1) Reintegrate strength training
2) Continue to track calories in order to lose or maintain my current weight
3) Continue to practice a healthier relationship with alcohol
With those goals in mind, my January goals will be:
1) Run at least 3 times a week
2) Lift weights at least 1 time a week
3) Run at least 75 miles in the month
As always, all goals are contingent on maintaining my mental, physical, and emotional health and are subject to adjustment as needed.
Finding and becoming a part of this group has been huge for this new runner, so thanks to everyone for being so welcoming and supportive. I'm excited to run 2019 with you all!10 -

Well with the holidays everyone is busy, except for us that aren’t. Or maybe someone with visitors needs a “get away”. The monthly mileage may work to someone’s favor. I also wanted to keep in mind that we have a few folks a day ahead of we Americans and Europeans. And I might just enjoy your company, encouragement and the wealth of information shared.
It’s a good day to wrangle in some newbies.
ETA @MegaMooseEsq I love your disclaimer! And your testament to the group, lovely.3 -

We non-moderators can only edit for the first hour, so hopefully, the moderators will fix it for us.1 -

My goal is to just get running!! My objective is to start walking 4 miles a day, gradually start running in 30 second intervals....eventually running a 1/2 mile straight

Same here! My goal is to stick better to my plan. December started off well but due to unforeseen circumstances, I kinda lost my will to run. I am using this week to reset.5 -

Hi Group!!!
I fizzled out in December but back with a vengeance in JANUARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am tossing out a big goal of 100 miles for the month.
I have my HM training plan taped to my desk, my bathroom mirror and refrigerator. I saw a photo of myself from over the weekend and it was horrific!! Time to get these legs moving, heart pumping and @$$ shrinking!!!!!

I’m new to running so I would like to just be able to walk a mile and not get out of breath where my husband has to help me up the porch stairs which there are only 4. I have really bad asthma because of my weight so I’m trying to lose it so I can overcome that but also be there for my daughter22

Hi! I’m in for the running challenge! Starting back walking/running 3 days a week on treadmill at home or outside.8

Welcome! A 1/2 mile straight is a great target! You also might want to consider looking at one of the couch to 5k programs as they work the same way (walking and running mix, slowly increasing the running).3 -
I wold like to Join. I am in the middle of a couch to 5k program and and working toward jogging for 30 minutes straight. i am at 6 minutes right now. I am not sure what to put down as a goal for January. as i am trying to walk/jog 5 days a week for 5 miles.7

@AshDouglas210 @melika2011 Welcome to the group!!!0

Welcome Newbies and Returnees!! This is a great supportive group but warning that it can be addictive (both the running and the group). Also the discussion moves very fast but stick with it as it is very informative with runners at all levels, has great discussions and is just a lot of fun too!
I am in again but will wait to set a goal once I see the doctor on Friday! Hoping to be released to start running again!
5 -
Goal for January is 45 miles. And to try to get my daughter out to run with me a few more times!5
-
Welcome to the group @AshDouglas210 @melika2011 @RedStickdad and @1coolmama28 .
I'm in for 75 miles in January.6 -
I am a previous logger but deleted my account since it was linked to my Facebook and I'm looking to take a break from that for a few months. I'm in for 112.5 miles in January though I will be visiting family in the NE for 10 days so between the cold and my dislike of treadmills, I may fall behind that week. I'm also reducing my runs from 5 per week to 4 as I'm starting to struggle with the weekly volume and my work schedule so I'm reducing my "goal". If I can run on Mondays, then I will, but I won't hold myself accountable for them. I also feel like I'm running stronger during my long runs with the extra rest day- I will still be active and either walk or ride those days.
This will be my third month logging in these challenges and I have to say thank you for creating them. They are a motivator because I look forward to logging in. I also enjoy reading the personal stories posted by the members and the fact these threads always stay positive. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend.10 -
Hi guys! Welcome to the new year!
I think I can probably make 60 miles this month if the weather holds, but want to have some flexibility if the weather is terrible. So 50 miles with a stretch goal of 60. My real goals are to keep running regularly through inclement weather, and have fun at my first trail race, which is on the 6th of January. The second race of the series is January 20.
I'll be back to set goals for 2019 on the 1st of January. The week after Christmas is my down time between achieving my last goals and setting new ones.5
