Drinking water...glass after glass trying to flush my system out. But no complaints as it could be so much worse and I could be reporting that I have to start over on Day #1. But no, Day #15 is almost here. Congrats to everyone who is celebrating any AF day! Woot!
Oh dear!! "Tonight I sit here drinking." Yeah that scared me for a second, ha ha. Good job on writing it that way, ha ha. Good job on keeping the demon alcohol away. Like you would need that right now.....3 -

Happy early Birthday 🎁 you too!5

Well I am all snowed in and even have alcohol in the house as we were supposed to have a family lunch here yesterday. I am feeling strong though and able to resist. Day 14! Almost halfway through the month. Some observations:
1. facial redness completely gone.
2. Skin is less dry.
3. mood calm and stable; not having arguments with the husband.
4. I can remember everything from the day before! Not waking up feeling shame, embarrassment or self loathing.
5. despite eating every sweet thing in sight, I have lost 2 lbs since Jan 1.
So I'm not seeing any downside to this yet. I did think I'd be sleeping more soundly but maybe I've been drinking too much coffee. I'll try to be more mindful of that.

Happy Sober and hang over free Monday. Saw this on fb this morning and thought I’d share here too
“You see, despite all of my resistance to religion and certainty that until that moment, I hadn’t HAD a higher power, I very much did have one. Alcohol was my higher power. Addiction was my God. It was the altar I knelt before and begged for relief for my transgressions. It was the sacrificial drink I took in a magnificently misguided attempt to wash away my many, many sins. My church was a bar, a smoky garage, a house party, a baby shower, a wedding, wherever I could freely display my worship and devotion to my 80 proof Savior. I prayed for weaker hangovers and stronger drinks. I paid more than my share of tithe to any false idol with a handful of pills or bag of blow. I didn’t need any saving, because I was baptized daily by the hand of almighty intoxication. And my friends, there is nary a murderous, brainwashing cult that could compare with the seductive and deadly allure of the dogma of drugs and alcohol. It will steal your soul and demand more. And you will gladly hand it over, slackjawed and transfixed with that telltale borderline insane gaze of religious fervor, eager to give everything you have and then some to satisfy it’s endless, greedy, deceitful demands.”

Have been noticing some changes with giving AF living a try for the new year:
1.more productivity at work
2. less junk food cravings
3. more stable emotions
4. losing weight with barely trying (about 4 1/2lbs so far)
5. more enjoyment from workouts
6. more water retention/moisture in skin5 -
@tifano. Very powerful stuff. I saw a photo of Artie Lang, a comic, on line yesterday. His nose is completely destroyed by coke. I've never seen anything like it. Friends on twitter are apparently begging him to seek help. Addiction really is a monster that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. I am glad my only vices have been cigarettes and alcohol. Those are bad enough.5

The biggest impact that drinking had on my diet was two fold - choices I made immediately after and what I ate for breakfast to try to quiet my stomach the next morning. Sometimes I think we should learn to use salt licks like animals. Not that I think that's healthy, but a lot of times that is really what I was after when I would eat a bunch of potato or corn chips.4

I just went out and looked.... So heartbreaking. Addiction will gladly take anything and everything. So cunning, baffling and powerful

I have been sober for 14 days and counting and I am into it! I just feel happier and more stable, because my hang overs were the worst and it didn't take much for me to get a really bad hang over (and the moods that went with it). I haven't really noticed any other changes, but I have been sick with a cold for weeks so maybe I'll notice other things once I get 100% well again. Looking forward to discovering what this new lifestyle will do for me moving forward. Happy to make new sober friends on mfp - feel free to add me.12

Day 14 of Dry January and feel great! I worked out this morning and agree with @thiswillhappen awesome not to be hungover.
Still very motivated, but I am a bit surprised as Monday’s are my weigh in days. I know it’s just a number; however, my scale did not go down from last week. I have cut out alcohol, eating healthy (no cheating) and working out! I think my body may be in shock with no alcohol. I am drinking a lot of water and hot tea. I feel the best I have for a really long time and that out weighs the scale!! I know I am doing all the right things. It took me awhile to put on my additional 14lbs over the years and it will take time and not a week to take off. Best to all! Happy Monday!5 -

Happy birthday
I am celebrating on the 25th the 10th AF birthday for me
I started a tradition on my 65th running 1/10th of a mile per year
This year I will run 🏃 7.1 miles to celebrate 71 years
This is what my sobriety and weight loss has given me the ability to do every year
Fortunately I am celebrating this year at my daughters house in California
I hope to continue this till I am 80 and run 8 miles11 -

I remember Artie from back when I listened to Howard Stern,I think he was sober-ish for some years? So sad,I told my daughter that an alcohol problem is almost worse than other drugs cuz it's everywhere and so accepted, almost encouraged in some situations, sounds like everyone is trucking along just fine,I love it!6 -
I found the Artie Lang article online. Very sad. Sounds in terrible pain over his addiction.
@Ke22yB Happy Early Birthday! xo
@thiswillhappen Congrats! Yes it is amazing even in 14 days how calm we feel.
@JenT304 @KristaFIRE Great observations of all the benefits!
@tifano “the seductive and deadly allure...... “ love the last few sentences especially of your quote.
@Fitness327wk Stay motivated! You’re doing awesome !2 -
@whitpauly It is EVERYWHERE! You’re so right. It’s even in my house constantly. I am actually pretty proud of us .... for those who have it in the house , because our SO drinks is an amazing sense of accomplishment. Husband just went out for a drink with a friend. Came home and said hello. Poured a scotch and went outside to sip it. Here i am Making my third or fourth cup of tea. I guess we are doing what is best for us. Other people can take care of themselves. I’m trying to save my life. Stay strong and keep busy!10

@RubyRed427 I feel ya. My husband has never expressed a desire to quit drinking along with me, even for a little while. It is discouraging but I too am trying to just take care of me at this point. I must admit I feel slightly smug as I bounce out of bed all cheery in the morning while he is lying there bleary eyed. It more than makes up for the slight jealously I may have felt the night before, watching him have a few drinks.8

Or water??2 -
I am not annoyed much by people who are controlled drinkers; my issues aren't their fault.6

Interesting view from an addiction counselor about the root of addiction stemming from abuse. It's on YouTube, "Complex Trauma 1" No real surprise as far as I'm concerned. It's an interesting watch. So far I've only watched part of it but it is in line with other videos on CPTSD & simplifies it with a very clear break down. If anyone has been diagnosed with this, it's worth watching. Hope it helps anyone affected.3

I want to share the lesson I learned today: Taking care of myself can be something as lame as saying, "I changed my mind, I am not able to do that now." OR before I agree to do someone a favor, "Let me think about that, & get back to you...." OR "NO!! But, if I change my mind, I'll let you know."
Is anyone else out there recovering from people pleasing??8 -
@JenT304 and @RubyRed427...I've said it before, BUT will again, I totally admire anyone who chooses to remain sober while living with others who drink. It's obviously much easier to control your environment to lessen temptation when you live alone. Either way though, it takes determination to remain sober and you ladies along with others on this thread have that and it is truly an inspiration to me.7

I don't know what to say but it's interesting hearing what your saying1 -
@carvedTones RubyRed and I aren't bothered much by controlled drinkers either. We are bothered by our husbands that do not seem to be supporting us much at this time. Nevertheless we have each other (we text all the time) and we are strong and face this challenge with determination and a bit of humor.8

Yes and I have been saying, "Let me think about it" a lot now. It is my thing to do. Otherwise I say I will do it and get overwhelmed quite a bit and have the potential to drink or overeat.....4 -

My hubs has no desire to quit either,it doesn't really bother me cuz he seems to have it under control, what DOES bother me is his stinky beer breath when hes all trying to kiss me,feel like barfing!6 -
104 days for me, alcohol & substance free.15

My wife is a mix. She doesn't drink much and rarely at home but she doesn't react at all wen I tell her how I am doing. We have other issues outside of this. Really not sure why we are still together; she made up her mind that it was too late, will no longer trust me or be physically or emotionally intimate. But then goes about day to day as if everything is fine. There are things worse than drinking around you that can threaten sobriety.9
