Re: monthly question
What are your current running goals?. My current goal is to stop setting unrealistic running expectations for myself and then beating myself up for not meeting them. Oh, I also have 2 half marathons (March & April) and 2 marathons scheduled this spring.
Something about me you guys don’t know. Ummm... I have short purple hair. I dyed it a few months ago and it still makes me smile every morning. I am a librarian and library jobs tend to be pretty liberal/ flexible. Plus, I work with kids. They think it’s pretty rad (and it covers up the grey).
What’s really kind of sad/upsetting is the amount of women who tell me they wish they were “brave” enough to do something that that. Then, they go on to tell me they are “too old”. These are women the same age as me! It’s just hair people. It does not define who you are. Ugh. Can you imagine being 90 on your deathbed and regretting not being brave enough to dye your hair? No thanks.

Ended up doing my long run today. It was a mediocre run, a little sucky, and a little great, depending on what point of the run lol. My knee started bothering me again towards the end of it so I’m a little concerned. I’m starting to think it might be because my shoes are worn out, as I’ve been in the same pair since April.

And maybe tell me something about you, others may not know.
My current running goal is to be consistent with running 3 times a week. I usually get a good start and then "fall off the wagon." So far, I'm on week 10 and proud of it. I was going to say that the PR I was chasing was to better my time on the EXTERRA Panther Creek Trail Run 10K this year...I ran it 10 years ago, when I turned 50, and was planning to run it again this year, when I turn 60. I just looked it up to see the exact date and was bummed to see that it is no longer a 10K. This year they are having a HM and a 4.2 mile race. That stinks. Guess I'll have to rethink that goal.
What you don't know about me? There's probably a lot. The one thing I'm most proud of is that I was in the US Air Force for 15 years and, one of my duties was to help launch the GPS satellites...my name is floating around in space somewhere, as we got to sign a piece of the heat shield on one of the satellites.
Today after work, I took my dog for a 30 minute walk. I had talked myself out of running today - was going to put it off until tomorrow. But, it was so nice out and who knows what tomorrow will bring, so I actually talked myself INTO running. I did 30 minutes and went 2.2 miles. That's a slight improvement over the last time I did this run.
Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!!!
Your name is written in graffiti in space! You win the monthly challenge. That can’t be topped.11 -

Now, I just need to write the sequel. Need figure out how to write and do long runs at the same time!
Congrats! Share the link please. If you already did, sorry, I'm bad about keeping up in here.
I can not link to my books directly, as I am sure that would run afoul of "do not sell your junk on our forum" rules. (very reasonable rule really!) Here is a picture of the books though, so you can see the killer artwork. I really am happy how it came out:
@PastorVincent Congrats!!! I just bought the ebook on Amazon and “followed” you on the weird new Amazon blog follow thingy. I love sci-fi/fantasy novels and look forward to reading it.2 -
@amymoreorless - love that you have purple hair! I get the same reaction to my running... 'I wish I could run and workout like you do but I'm too old to start doing anything like that!' even when I tell them I was older than them when I started. pffft!7

Feburary Goal: Just keep trying

with the possible exception of @Tramboman, I am the oldest poster on this challenge....
We're not the oldest -- we're just the most youthfully challenged...
@Tramboman and @HonuNui - Love this!! So now I am youthfully and height challenged I like to tell people (my doctor especially) that yes, I am getting older but I am NOT old.... Also I think @mobycarp fits in here somewhere too.
I love the genealogy stories! My parents families have been in the US a long time (pre-revolutionary) and are pretty well documented going way way back so I didn't have much to research there. My husband's father though was 1st generation from Hungary so he has done a lot of research and found relatives here and in Hungary. It is really a lot of fun especially with more and more records being made available online. I am on FamilySearch (free) and he had an Ancestry account for a while. I think I found as much if not more on the free site other than things like military records.
@shanaber Check with your local library about free genealogy resources. Our library offers free access to Ancestry.com. They also have free intro to genealogy classes and store the county’s genealogy records.4 -
Hey all. It's the morning after my run and even though it was just a fun run for charity, I thought I'd do a run report.
This was a walk/run event raising money for blood cancers by the local fire service, so started at my local fire station and finished at the fire station in the next town - though they extended it out a little further to the town hall (about half a km). Remember we are rural towns so only a few hundred people living in each town.
I woke at 4am, and couldn't go back to sleep. At 5 I finally got up and just chilled on the couch, watching trashy TV for a bit. 6 I started to get ready, out the door at 635. The run started at 7, and the start was at the local fire station, only 400m up the road from my place (Nice to have!). Get to the start and there are only around 20 of us! I had hoped they would get more. So the fire engine siren goes off as the start gun and I started running.
I was immediately at the beginning of the pack - everyone else was walking! I kept my pace slow - between 7min/km and 630 min km. I was quickly joined by a young 18 year old guy who paced me for about half a km but I could tell there was no way he would keep that pace, he was breathing way too hard. He dropped off then a work colleague who also runs caught up with me around 3ks and we ended up doing the rest of the run together. There were 2 big hills on the course, at 7km and again about 14km. We decided to walk up the hills and run the rest. We had a blast, chatting away and generally just getting to know each other better. At the 17k mark we decided to walk for a few ks, my hips were starting to protest haha. Then ran the final 2.5 to the finish line. The run was mostly on rural roads so car going past at speed. The lead car was pretty good but I kept wanting him to further ahead, he pretty much stayed only a couple of hundred meters ahead the whole way. It was really disconcerting being at the front haha.
So we lead the whole way, and got to the finish in 2hrs 57min. I was hoping to do it in around 3hrs so really happy with that. Stretched and had a rub down. My hips and calves were really sore. A real reminder of why training and building up to that distance is so important!
At the start, with the fire engine
Happiness cause we finished!
At the finish line
Then a friend and I were going to the next major town so I could buy a new phone - old one having some issues again, only a few months after getting fixed for the same issue. So I spent 3hrs total in the car going too and from town. I got home about 530, had a hot bath, relaxed and played with new phone then crashed.
Hips are still sore, calves feel better but today will be resting, stretching and rolling.
My new hydration pack was awesome! Absolutely loved it and was so glad to have it. Pockets for phones and other bits and pieces, I had an extra bottle with gatorade (thank goodness for that!). No chafing or anything just comfortable. Best $30 spent ever! Oh and shoes were fine. I got the occasional niggle but put that down to road camber more than anything. No pain there now20 -

Nominal February mileage goal: 190 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the February races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – Garmin has it at 27° F (-3°C) with 14 mph NW wind when I started running. That's a few degrees warmer, and a more northerly wind, than was forecast. Yes, the wind really was more northerly; the warmer part wasn't significant enough for me to notice.
At 4 AM, my driveway was black. By 4:30, there were white streaks. When I drove out to go to the group run, I left tire tracks. Things being as they were, with the group run closer to Lake Ontario and part of it going through Mt. Hope Cemetery, I chose to wear the Peregrine Ice+ shoes. Good call.
The group route featured a partial course preview for the Flower City Half. I really like that course, and the preview went through the best part: The climb up Goodman Ave, the little hills crossing from Goodman to Mt. Hope, and through Mt. Hope Cemetery. As expected, there was ice under fresh snow in the cemetery, and also on the sidewalks and the side streets. Fortunately, traffic was light and I was able to run salted asphalt for the major roads.
The verdict is in for the Peregrine Ice+. They aren't magic. I still have to pay attention to slick surfaces. But they are better than any other shoes I've worn for running on light snow, packed snow, and ice. There were places where the ice bothered most of the group and I barely noticed; there were also places where it was so slick I had to be quite careful even in good shoes. Spikes might have helped there, but I also had a lot of clear asphalt to run.
10 miles with company was pleasant. Then off to find another 10 on my own. Took another jaunt through the cemetery, then intended to run the rest of the Flower City Half route. That plan got canceled by snow-covered ice on the Riverway Trail part of the race route. Took a bridge across the river, chickened out and crossed back perhaps one bridge before I should have, and headed back to the store needing more distance. Okay, a shorter jaunt through a pleasant cemetery; I hit 18 miles just before reaching the Gettman mausoleum the third time. And it wasn't quite enough.
Mental toughness exercise: After I stretched the third trip through the cemetery for as much as it was worth, it looked like I'd get back to the store at about 19.5 miles. Bleah. I got myself to run an out and back to make the distance. It's really mentally hard to run an out and back to make up a half mile, but a half mile is too long for OCD circles in the parking lot. Got it done, and I've now had a longer training run than I had last year in the Boston training cycle.
Garmin says average pace was 8:20 per mile. That's plenty fast enough, given that I initially set out with the 8:30 pace group and the road conditions were not conducive to consistent fast running. I feel pretty good about this right now. I haven't had many true long runs, because I've had a busy race calendar. Plenty of medium long runs, but now I've had a true long run. It makes a difference mentally if not physically.
Another race next Saturday, but I expect to be back at pumping out a Saturday long run the week after next. I'd certainly like spring weather to get here soon, but winter has not yet totally defeated me.

Guess who ran SIX WHOLE MILES this morning? That's right - this girl! Woo hoo!! In 1:08:17. Now I need to start looking for a reasonably local 10k. It wasn't "easy", exactly, but it wasn't torture, either. I decided to go run on campus this morning because my park of choice was crowded. Joke's on me, because apparently today was a home baseball game today. So, I spent a not insignificant portion of the run dodging/weaving through crowds. But I still managed to average an 11:22 min/mile pace, so I'm very happy with the day.
Something you don't know about me: I'm not just a horse person - I'm a lifer. My M.S. research was a project that combined equine nutrition and equine exercise physiology. I spent almost a decade lecturing horse people about the dangers of obesity and weight management strategies before I finally got motivated enough to apply those principles to myself. I got tired of being a living "do as I say, not as I do" symbol. Fourteen months later, I've lost over 63 pounds (I'm only 5'1"!) and gone from taking four weeks to get all the way through the first C25K workout to running six continuous miles!
Genealogy: I'm a descendant of Jack Daniel.

@Avidkeo Good job! Must have been fun pulling away from that 18 year old!
Does anyone get any sleep the night before a morning race? I know I never do. That's one thing I like about the series I'm currently in, all the start times are 2 pm, which is when I usually run anyway.7 -

Ran with my running group this morning, followed by coffee - such a nice way to start a Sunday! When I got home I took the children for a run around the block (separately, so 750m x2) as they're keen to do the Kids' Dash at the event I'm doing at the beginning of March. Hopefully we'll do this 2-3 times a week before then.

Awesome work @Avidkeo. Great effort and great result. *Goes off to find small rural event so has a modicum of a chance of having podium finish*3 -

No pain there now
Wait... does that mean you won?
Technically joint first as my friend and I ran across together. So yeah, in a field of about 20 where most people were walking (it was called a walkathon but described as a walk/run) I won.
Actually I did get in about 10 mins ahead of a guy who looks incredibly fit, has the typical runners physique. Didn't expect to be ahead of him16 -

This was a walk/run event raising money for blood cancers by the local fire service, so started at my local fire station and finished at the fire station in the next town - though they extended it out a little further to the town hall (about half a km). Way to go! And I don't think you should worry about your pace at all. As a fellow "turtle", I'm a firm believer that distance is what really matters!

And maybe tell me something about you, others may not know.[/i]
...goal, just keep moving to try to keep the joints from stiffening up...because (you may not know....)
with the possible exception of @Tramboman, I am the oldest poster on this challenge...
Would you mind sharing how old you are?
WTG @debrakgoogins, That's fantastic!
@Avidkeo WTG! Sounds like you had a great time AND won!!! Beating an 18 year old would be awesome!
@greyparks206 You're doing great!!!! Keep it up!
@amymoreorless Thank you! I finally won something. I guess I never thought of it as graffiti, but I guess it is.

How about a monthly question?
What are your current running goals? Do you have a PR your chasing?
And maybe tell me something about you, others may not know.[/i]

Oh. I corrected that for ya
You edited the wrong word - you should have changed "oldest." Wisest
my her-o is 88. My new goal is to meet her before she’s 90. In Kona. So, “old” is not a protected status here, as a runner. It is, in fact something to treasure and aspire to. (Because running is continually elusive for me).

W5D1 completed. It has been one week since I last ran. With the historic snowfall over this past week in Seattle it was impossible to not only run outside but even travel anywhere. Now that most of the snow and ice are melted I decided today would be a good day to go out for a run and the rain wasn't go to stop me. I wasn't sure how I would feel on the run considering I hadn't ran in a week, but I decided to start with W5 and give myself the ok to reduce the running intervals if it just didn't feel right. Well, after the first running interval I felt great and I continued to feel great over the next 2 running intervals and even the dog was feeling good.
