Keto diet = good or bad

Her loss. She don't know what fun she's missing.
Either that or she got more than she bargained for and ran away screaming. :drinker:
Or more realistically, keto just wasn't for her, and she could not sustain it. My optimistic side hopes she just decided to log, found that suited her better, and continued to lose instead. Naive hope maybe.2 -

Btw, it goes on to list side effects for other diets, like vegans and deficient b12 and gas from eating too many greens.
Re: the runs...It's not the lack of fiber in many cases, I don't think. If you put an oil-slick in your coffee or sauces, what do you expect to happen?
Some keto folk research before beginning or get advice from those who are veterans (who actually did research before jumping in) and figure out that drinking oil and overloading the fat is not necessary. Many keto gurus on YouTube and around tell people they have to gorge on fat. Keto for weightloss is not about the fat in as much as it's about the lack of carbs and getting enough protein. Fat naturally fills in for the lack of carbs (calorie-wise), but slathering butter and cheese all over everything isn't the way to do things. Sure, cook veggies in some fat for the NOM factor. But beyond that, the fat in your meat and dairy, and modest fat for cooking and sauce, are sufficient.
I always advise people this macro priority:- Carbs are a ceiling in grams.
- Protein is a range based upon your height, weight, and activity level.
- Fill the rest of your calories with fat.
And also from that link:Sure, “Keto Crotch” is stealing the spotlight recently — but let’s not forget that smell can drift upwards, resulting in some seriously stank breath.
So stank crotch makes your breath smell bad? Say what, now?
Keto Crotch sounds like a good supervillian. Stealing spotlights and what not...with her dastardly minion, Keto Breath. Looks like we need Carb Man (suitably dressed with his unders over his unnecessarily tight pants) to rescue us from this menace.
Thank you - you picked up on exactly what I meant. I mean, not only is keto crotch awful, but so is keto, and anything else not carb loaded!
Whatever side of the fence someone is on...that guy is not the one to get the details from
I entirely disagree with you on keto being awful, naturally since I used it to lose all my weight and I did not have those side effects (bonus points, right ), but it's good for people on the opposite sides of the fence to simultaneously be rational, able to still have fun, and agree that that person should not be allowed anywhere without a responsible editor present.
I have a fondness for keto (real keto, not keto fantasy), as it served as a good tool for me. I stopped using the tool when it became cumbersome (long story involving autoimmune disease). Certain tools work better for some than others. I'm a low-carb (100gish), calorie-counting fiend now during maintenance, except on the weekends, when it's Vegas around here. My best friend is just doing moderation and calorie-counting and coming along just fine with that. She tried keto, and it made her feel like absolute roadkill even when she was doing everything right. So she wisely found a better tool. The best strategy, IMO.8 -

Well ... Oh, how easy it is to misunderstand, perhaps even intentionally. The idea would be that smells based on a problem can manifest in other areas.
Now, per the analysis a gynecologist gave, this would indeed be a misunderstanding. Keto crotch is proposed to be based on vaginal pH changes, while Keto breath is a result of acetone production and elimination. I have a hard time thinking someone is going to inform people about how a low carb diet should be done but be utterly unfamiliar with the acetone breath as a possible result of it. I've never read a low carbohydrate book that didn't mention the acetone smell as something possible, including advising hydration to help reduce it.3 -

Naturally.
How the writer expressed that idea (smells based on a problem may additionally manifest elsewhere) didn't come out quite right though.
I don't disagree with the gyno. It's entirely possible for pH changes. The female system can get upset quite regularly by a great number of things. Keto is also accused of disrupting the cycle due to hormone release during weight loss as I understand things. The weight loss can possibly make the cycle worse or better, often after about 3 months worth of complete wonkiness. And that's largely a YMMV. However, I've read doctors and keto folk alike claim that those going from higher-carb diets to low-carb or keto have less issues with various womenly infections if they had them chronically up till then. Of course, I don't doubt the reverse may be true of some subset. We human females are complicated. Many variables.
Though I am slightly suspicious that this may be a case of the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Many things attributed to keto, both beneficial and detrimental, are also side effects of weight loss. Telogen effluvium, improved metabolic markers (cholesterol and diabetes), cycle disruptions, and many others. Could the keto crotch thing be another? Maybe. I mean, few people desire crotch discussion of that type. Maybe it's a weight loss side effect for some people, they just don't feel comfortable talking about it? Or it could just be a keto thing. I'm open to legitimate evidence to the contrary of my uncertain stance on keto crotch. Jury is out for me pending better data than interweb n=1 and clickbaity articles, IMO. But like I said, I concede it's possible. The breath thing...well. That's probably just keto.
Personally, if my body responded with both those 2 villains I mentioned, I'd likely have fled from keto myself after giving Carb Man a call.
I had the breath issue temporarily only. It was worth it to stick it out as I was able to a consistently maintain a calorie deficit pretty easily.

I use keto as a lifestyle and not just a diet to lose weight and find a magic pill result. My health has never been as good as it is now. Processed carbs do damage to your health. my blood pressure, Cholesterol and sugar are great now. i no longer suffer from joints and lower back pain. Keto helps with inflammations. In less than a year I have lost 82 pounds and my energy levels are high. you have to educate yourself about keto and not just say you are doing keto and end up doing it wrong. you could do more damage than good.21

Process foods in general, carbs or fat, aren't beneficial to your health outside of a mental aspects. Overall weight loss is going to reduce chronic inflammation. Because there are many carb based foods linked to reduced inflammation such as fruits, veggies, beans, etc..5 -

Your weight loss is most likely why you're feeling better, not because of some magical macros ratio.

What does "sustainable" mean, on a group/population level? Or are you just talking "for the majority", in a general way?
Not trying to be confrontational; it's just that I've always thought of sustainability (in a "can a person/people keep it up" sense, not the ecological sense) as an individual thing, so hard to generalize about . . . so curious.0 -

You were doing pretty well there until you told us what we need to do.
My body weight, BP, cholesterol, and general health are fine, now, just from losing weight, while eating around 200g carbs most days. Joint problems also improved dramatically (though the torn meniscus for which I'm deferring surgery is not magically fixed). I never had problems with blood sugar; but didn't eat truly huge amounts of processed carbs even when I was obese.
Personally, for me - especially as a vegetarian - cutting way back on vegetables, fruits, and legumes would be really dissatisfying. Also, I doubt that eating fewer vegetables is generally a good idea for most people.
I recognize that some people find themselves eating more vegetables while keto then they did previously, which will be a change for the healthier, for them. But my routine is 5+ servings minimum daily, often hitting servings in the teens, and recently hit 24 servings one day, which may be a PR. I would need to dramatically reduce veggies/fruit to reach keto levels of carbs, and I don't think that would be a healthier choice for me. (I'd also have to reduce dairy intake, something my Northern European genes make me tolerate just fine, and which I enjoy.)
Keto can be great for some, and seems to be sustainable for some. That's wonderful! The evangelical approach of saying it would be best for all . . . no. And I'm betting that "you must" is not the most effective way to convert those who are on the fence, either.12 -
It's good if it helps you stay compliant, eliminate trigger foods, helps you form better relationships with foods and helps you long term to meeting a good weight.
It sucks if you struggle with diets that are super restrictive, and enjoy and are satiated by healthy carb sources likes fruits/veggies/starches.
This! I've only been doing keto for the past 2 weeks, but it helps me with my food addiction, keeps me away from my trigger foods, and allows me to truly listen to my body and tell when i'm actually hungry or just wanting to eat to eat. It's great to be able to stop eating when i'm full and actually leave food on the plate! With my trigger foods: fried foods mostly, french fries, things like that- i always felt "compelled" to eat the rest, even if it made me so stuffed i felt sick!
It's interesting how often (as here) trigger foods are perceived as "carbs" but really are carbs + fat, often about half and half. Fried foods are inherently high fat, not inherently "carbs" although they can be also high in carbs if they are potatoes (fries are about half and half fat and carbs) or you add breading.
Anyway, that aside, I agree keto can be a satiating way to eat (as can just plain low carb or for some ignoring macros and focusing on what they feel satisfies them). Low fat also can (lots of people who can't stop eating fries or burgers have no issue with vegetables, plain potatoes, fish or leaner cuts of protein), but low carb is more likely to feel like you can still eat lots of indulgent foods on it, so it's not hard, for lots of people who do really like fat or meat.
Interestingly, plain potatoes typically score as about the highest satiety per calorie score, where's fried potatoes (particularly fries) or other combinations of potatoes plus fat (mashed potatoes with cream and butter) score much lower.
Anyway, others may feel much more indulgent on a lower fat, higher fat, but nutrient dense diet, and so find that more enjoyable and easier to stick to.
I think everyone's trigger foods can be different
Of course they can, but I'm referring to the specific foods that people call "carbs."
Fried foods (including french fries) are fat + carbs, not just carbs. Some fried food could even be low carb.
Cake and cookies and pizza and donuts are fat + carbs -- those are often mentioned too, and referred to as "carbs." If someone loves fried rice or pasta in a cream sauce, again that's going to be high fat, but still sometimes gets referred to as "carbs."
I just find it odd.
Yes, you don't see a lot of people "addicted" to plain pasta, or just the pizza crust
Now Pizza crust - that would be my no. 1 trigger food. And bread, and rolls, croissants, naan bread, pumpernickel, crackers - AND whatever I can pack inside and on top. I could eat easily two loaves with whatever else I could find and 4000 to 6000 calories for such a meal are not exaggerated. Since I understand "trigger food" (thank you MFP and the supportive members) I have nearly entirely cut out bread and you know what? Now I just can't eat those huge amounts of protein, fat, ham, bacon, eggs, sardines, cheeses, butter, chicken skin, roast beef any longer. For me the combination of bread and fat / protein was lethal. Now I (finally) listen to MFP, have a daily, balanced meal plan, stick to the MFP calculated calories, do as much exercise I can do with my huge weight and the surplus weight is coming down slowly. Over the last 350 days I averaged about 30 % carbs and 35 % fats and protein each. I don't need to cheat and am happy to continue with this meal plan long term. For me it seems to be balanced and I feel healthy.6
