Have a great set of races, @MobyCarp !
I found this beer at the local liquor store the other day. I was tempted to buy a 6-pack until I saw it had salt in it.

@workaholic_nurse I'm a bit sore from the run for some reason, but the fall didn't seem to leave any lasting pain. I've never heard of a race which required entrants to bring snacks for the aid station. I like Oreos, M&M's, orange slices, banana halves, pickles, pretzles, and miniature candy bars like snickers. Fireball is nice too.
Instead of an entry fee, the race organizers have requested this. Works for me!4 -

OMG I'm actually excited I found this! Not a super awesome runner but I would like to get in at least 3 miles daily. I've done a few 5ks in the past 2 years and I absolutely love it. I have one coming up next month. Hopefully a 10k by the end of the year for the Resolution Run. *crossing fingers*14

Happy to see that after a slow start to the month, I'm halfway to goal. Road-trip with the running girls tomorrow for a trail adventure. Except for the 6am departure time, it should be fun!

It was so windy and warm out today both Hobbes and I were so thirsty we stopped at every drinking fountain. When I was running it seemed I was always running into the wind and my legs got really tired! Could have been the wind or strength training last night or a combination of both. Longish run planned for tomorrow and HM training starting on Monday!Coming home from our run today there was too much excitement. When we were almost home there was a dog was running loose near our house. I turned around and went back up the street I was on and called DH to come and intervene since Hobbes the Vizsla is so freaked out these days by loose dogs (ever since he was attacked on the trail). DH decided to get the car and come and get us but before he did the dog came charging full blast down the street at us. I honestly was afraid I was going to get bit or Hobbes was. Ends up it was a puppy but it terrified Hobbes even when it was clear it just wanted to play. It wouldn't let me touch it or grab its collar and when DH got there with the car I got Hobbes inside and the puppy proceeded to jump all over the car and followed it to our house and into the garage. I finally got it out of the garage and the door closed but it still wouldn't come to me or let me catch it. I took pictures though and posted on our neighborhood group so hopefully the owners will see it.

Treadmill run + circuit training today. We worked on pull-ups a bit, so I'm back at that but frankly don't think I'm much closer to my goal than I was 2 months ago. I did manage to do a deadhang where we switched the grip direction back and forth one hand at a time for a few switches - which I could not do when I tried it last week. So tiny progress.
Not excited that temps are plummeting down overnight. I didn't have enough time to enjoy the brief window of spring.
Oh, you'll all be pleased to know I made it through to happy hour. Really enjoyed that beer today.11 -
@shanaber aww I hate it that Hobbes the Vizsla is so traumatized by that attack. Glad it all worked out. Do you plan on any desensitization type work with him?
It did make me wonder if the dog had been coming after us, what I could have done. I guess kicked at it because other than my phone I had nothing. I could go back to carrying my little air horn but it is kind of a pain in the butt.6 -

1 mile and change before PT circuit training this morning, little over 6 in yesterday. Pick up the new trail shoes tomorrow and going to try them out/break them in right away. Hope is for somewhere between 12 and 18 tomorrow. Then easy runs next week, and taper the following culminating in a trial trail marathon on 3/30. I am still not sure what snack to bring for the aid station, any suggestions?
Also have signed up for a 10K in Rainsville, AL, that looks like a load of fun. this one . If anyone else in the group is running it please let me know, I will be in town Friday evening and all day Saturday before the race, and would enjoy putting faces with names usernames,
I live 10 minutes from this race and have been debating doing the 10 k. It is the only "big" race we have close. All the money raised stays to local charities which I usually know. It is just going to be so hot then I am hesitating but I can come cheer you on if nothing else.3 -

Rest day today. Spent 4 hours in the car getting to Virginia Beach. Several annoying stretches of construction and traffic, but much less stressful with plenty of time built in. I'll call the plan of taking 2 days to get here a winner.
I actually got to the expo before it closed, picked up my bibs, and went to talk to the folks at the registration desk. J&A Racing had sent me an ad to upgrade my half marathon to the Dolphin Challenge (8K + Half Marathon). But I was already registerd for the 8K. Question: Am I in the Dolphin Challenge for running both races, or am I not in it because the USATF Masters 8K is technically a different race than the Towne Bank Shamrock 8K? Turns out I can't be counted for Dolphin Challenge standings without messing up the USATF bib. But the nice lady traded my half marathon bib for a Dolphin Challenge bib, so I can get the Dolphin Challenge medal for running both races. Which is why I need two singlets, since I won't be able to do laundry between the 8K tomorrow and the half on Sunday:
And speaking of multiple races on the same weekend . . . I thought of @PastorVincent when I was at the expo. I saw an oval magnet with 48.6 inside. The caption around the margin said, "This was a Dopey idea." If I were contemplating the Dopey Challenge, I would have bought one.
Have fun @MobyCarp! I know 2 people who did the whale challenge last year. They loved that race.1 -

I'm getting some winter gloves and sleeves thanks to your recommendations. It's fun having a browse. Not sure what else I'll get. It's kinda fun!

I think this is the third year I've done the Iconic Sport Challenge. I completed every challenge both times. Can't remember if I won anything last year, but IIRC I won a couple of things in 2017. This time I'm just going for Nike till all prizes go, then see how many others I have time to do.3 -

Ya poor Hobbes. He definitely could have pick up on your anxiety. Least he understands the difference in daycare dogs and stranger-danger dogs. If a dog comes after you, you know you can always (try) to use the leash as a weapon and restrain (strangle) the attacking dog. I hope that never has to happen though.

W7D2 completed. I had to do an errand after work so I decided I would do the run right after I ran the errand. Well, this meant that I would be running a different route from my usual running route. When I was about 20 minutes into the run I saw a dog park, so I decided to take a short break so that my dog could hang out and sniff around with some new doggie friends. So, after about a 5 minute break at the dog park the dog and I finished up the rest of the 25 minute run. It wasn't the smoothest run, but it was definitely different.

Winter made another appearance overnight - had a little bit of snow in the shady places this morning. Run today done at 35 degrees F with a very refreshing breeze out of the northwest. The wooden foot bridges had a little snow and ice on them, but nothing really bad.
Wife and I got new shoes yesterday - we're fortunate to have a New Balance outlet store nearby. The difference they made for my legs was considerable, so now I know I can squeeze about 400 miles out of a pair of shoes.

10k on trails yesterday, had to run out and back four times instead of the usual loop because of flooding. Beautiful weather though. Much needed - I have friends in town and am feeling stressed with so much to do. Being an introvert isn’t always easy. It was nice just to get out and run.
Seems like we are gradually getting faster, we typically run our trail runs easy for six miles then throw in a fast finish for the last .2 of a mile on the boardwalk to make up 10k, and the last little partial split usually ends up something between 7:30 and 8 minute mile pace. This time I was really focusing on form and lengthening my stride and it ended up at 6:30! Which is easy pace to some of y’all but to me it feels like I fired up the rocket powered boosters.
I think spring is finally really here. I saw a skink in my yard yesterday. Then I saw another skink! Then a third! They are in the leaves under the rose bushes, hunting spiders. Tiny little golden skinks.
@amirahdaboss and @ContraryMaryMary Happy belated birthday, and my heart is with you and with @Avidkeo at this sad time for the Muslim community and for New Zealand. Kiwis are such gentle people typically that this is even more shocking than if it happened someplace else. And Christchurch is such a lovely town. I wish everyone would be kind to everyone else.8 -
11 miles this morning. Took it easy for the first 5 miles. Right knee started hurting again, so slowed down even more. It felt better, and I can't remember running and feeling that easy in a long time. Have been told to slow down 472 times, but it didn't sink in until now. Just wanted to stay out as long as I could in the beautiful weather

Nominal March mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Cut back before St. Patrick’s Day weekend, run the 8K hard, use the half as a training race. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage.
Today's notes – Alarm went off at 5 this morning. Do what I need to do, down to the lobby where the hotel had a limited early breakfast out for runners.* Gather with my team, and do a running commute to check-in about 1200m away. Then off for the rest of a warmup run as an out and back on the boardwalk to see what the wind is like. It didn't seem so bad.
Post-run report: Garmin says it was 52º F with 7 mph NNW wind for the commute and warmup, but 50º F with 16 mph NNW wind for the actual race. I didn't notice the temperature change, but the wind really did pick up that much.
The Shamrock 8K is a totally flat, mostly north-south race with some minor east-west jogs to shift between Pacific Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, and the boardwalk and to turn around. 2 miles at the start was south with the wind, then 2 miles along the boardwalk into the wind, followed by about a mile of north on Atlantic, back south on the boardwalk to the finish.
Consensus club thinking from last night was to run the first 2 miles however hard felt good, then try to hang behind someone faster for the northerly trek up the boardwalk. Let the stronger runner break the wind. Some people had success with this plan. On the boardwalk, I never found someone to follow like that. I passed people instead.
The wind was at its most fierce from 4 to 4.5 miles, northbound on Atlantic. Then at 4.5 miles when we turned south toward the finish, it was tailor made for a finishing kick. I ran that last half mile at a good 5K race pace, ended up finishing in 32:06 gun time, 32:02 net time, age grading 83%. Given a very competitive field, that was a middle of the pack performance: 64th of 153 overall, 10th of 21 in the M 60-64 age group. One of our stronger runners sat this one out with injury, so my team finished 4th among the M 60+ teams.
I'm happy with this one. I took what the day gave me, managed the race well, and didn't get hurt. I didn't work as had as I did 2 years ago when I ran 30:59; but 2 years ago I was fighting for a team podium finish and today I knew there was no way my team would finish on the podium. We were not particularly close to the 3rd place team.
The plan for tomorrow was originally an exercise in pace control, to run at marathon pace. I have been targeting 7:20 per mile as my marathon pace this cycle. But Meb is the 1:35 pacer, and 1:35 works out to a 7:15 pace per mile. Close enough, and a couple friends of mine are planning to hang with Meb. So that's where I will start, and if I have any sense I'll just stay with that group for 13.1 miles. It's supposed to colder (38º F at gun time, rising to perhaps 42º F as we run), but slightly weaker wind around 11 mph. Should be fun.
