Had a really good week of runs this past week. The only negative was that a new pair of New Balance shoes of a different model than I have used before, has been causing some blisters on my instep/arch. I'm going to continue to try them on shorter runs to see if it improves and if not I'll have to just have them be my gym shoes and not use for running. I think I have enough life in my Brooks to get me thru the next few weeks to the next HM before I need to purchase another pair.

OMG and hugs. I hit a cow a few years ago, my car looked a little better than yours, but was still written off. Looking at that pic, I am so glad you guys drive on the wrong side of the road! I saw the side all caved in and feared the worst, then remembered you would have been on the other side of the car.
I'm still getting over mine, anytime I see an animal on the road (frequently where I live annoyingly) I get that adrenaline pumping.

Monday for me. I did 6k this morning. As I was doing the final km I was tempted to push it out to 8, but I reminded myself I am easing back into it, and I will do 8k tomorrow as one of my longer runs this week, and this is about building up again. so I stopped at 6. I'm feeling really good again. Though i nearly got myself run over by a logging truck, that wasn't fun. Ill be a little more aware next time.8

Today's run was awesome. The weather was perfect. I waited until after church, and it was so nice. It would have been a little chilly for me if I had gone earlier, but it was about 60°F with just about 4 mpf east winds. It was such a pretty day that I ran out to the lake and then I had my husband come pick me up at Walmart so I ran a total of 10 miles.
My son and his girlfriend were here this weekend so I got kind of behind on this thread.
@ContraryMaryMary Those pictures are beautiful. Except for the last one. Lol. That one kind of gives me a panic attack.
@workaholic_nurse I'm glad you are ok. That car looks awful.
2019 races:

@workaholic_nurse - Oh Wow! I am so glad you walked away from that but I suspect you will be pretty sore in the morning! It is sad about the cows but did the farmer have a reason that they weren't in his field? Growing up in Idaho we had a few (maybe more than a few) times that gates were not secured and cows ended up on the highway, usually at night. It never ended well for the cows and often not for the people in the cars. The farmers also got hit with fines and covering the damage costs.
@MobyCarp - another fantastic race! Love the bling, especially that hat! So where is your picture with Meb?
@kgirlhart - what a beautiful place to run!
@girlinahat - I love that you can ride a train out and then run back! How did it workout with running in the hiking shoes or are they more like trail runners?1 -
@workaholic_nurse I’m so glad you’re ok! And so sorry about the car and the cows.
@ContraryMaryMary What a gorgeous hike/run!
@MobyCarp It seems like you’re in excellent shape for Boston, and that the two races worked really well together!
I got to run my much-anticipated 5K—not new to these but I’ve never tried to race one because I’ve always run them with kids. I was hoping for below 30 min, but ended up with 30:41, but that seems a good number to beat next time! What especially tickled me was that I was 9th out of 50+ women in my age group. It was really fun to try to run fast (I have never really done that, except for a handful of fartleks here and there. My base hasn’t seemed to be enough to do much in the way of speedwork, and I have that novice issue of running too fast, with negative splits every run, so am always trying to focus on slowing down) I felt so great the rest of the day! And my daughter didn’t mind me just taking off, and had a great time too.
I did realize I needed to do more with hills, though—I ended up walking briefly on two. They totally threw me for a loop! There are plenty of hills around, so I just need to bite the bullet.
I was really curious about my splits, though, because of the overall pace and how slow I ended up on those hills. But I could not get my Fitbit Ionic to sync the run! Argh! I was so annoyed—I’d upgraded from a Blaze to have the GPS, and considered switching to a Garmin at that point, but I’d been tracking data for years and was used to the interface, etc. So, since I was just in the window for REI to take it back with no questions, I switched it out for a Garmin yesterday afternoon.
Today was cross training according to the HM plan, and it was a gorgeous bluebird day for some spring snowboarding, so we went for that. But I was so excited to take the Garmin for a spin, so I ran a very easy (unauthorized by the plan) three miles in the sun before we left, which felt great and was beautiful. And now I’m pretty sleepy!
The only thing about the Garmin is that the calorie import was so different today—I’m going to have to keep an eye on it. Garmin was more generous with calories than MFP—that was the same with Fitbit—but I never got a negative calorie adjustment for over 14K steps like I did today! (And I’ve found the Fitbit + MFP system super accurate and helpful for losing 1 lb/week, eating all exercise calories) But all in all, I like the way it looks and works better overall. I ended up getting a Forerunner—the touchscreens on both the Blaze and Ionic were bothersome (so much rain and dampness here!), and I like the buttons & other features much better. So far so good.

Wow @workaholic_nurse those are ALL the injuries you have from that? Very very lucky. Sorry about the car, but good to have you still with us.0
-
@girlinahat - I love that you can ride a train out and then run back! How did it workout with running in the hiking shoes or are they more like trail runners?
They were the inov-8 roclite 325 they’re very lightweight hiking mid-boots. So not quite Trail runners. Easy enough to run in due to them weighing little more than a normal pair of running shoes though. I’m not really a heavy boot fan, and prefer to strengthen my own ankles rather than have so-called ‘ankle support’ in a boot.0 -
Haven't been online all that much recently, way too much work and life and not enough free time for anything (except exercise and overeating!). Yesterday was the 2nd on the local race series, 5km (supposedly, although my app registered 4.89). It was the first time I'd run that far in one go since my injury in December, so I was perfectly happy with my time of 31:04.
Not so happy with my husband, who had agreed to walk it with our daughter then spent the rest of the day bitching and picking fights over everything out of frustration that he had had to walk it all when he felt (note he's overweight and does not run regularly, only when he decided to come to races with me) he could have run more and not come in almost last. **sigh**
This leaves me with two things to consider. The third and final race in the series is a 7km. It was scheduled for the 28th of April, but then the government here decided to call elections for that day, so it's been moved forward to the 31st of March, just 2 weeks away. My easy gradual training plan would have had me ready for a 7km on 28/04. For 31/03 it calls for 5.6km, so just under a mile less than the race. So, considering his lordship's bitching, if my daughter wants to do it for the T-shirt (you have to finish all 3 in the series to get that) I am going to have to walk it with her and let him run (then I will feel justified in bitching myself when he passes out after a couple of miles or DNF or ends up walking even slower than us!). My quandry is, is it fair to try and force her to do some sort of run/walk combination in the hopes she can complete the whole thing that way and I won't come in dead last, or should I just write this one off, walk for my T-shirt and refuse to take them to races with me from now on?
Oh the joys of families.
Anyway, well on track for goal with 24km run of 40, also keeping up with my 2 x total body and 1 x upper body strength workouts each week. Stretching is not as regular as I would like, but that is always first to go out the window when time constrictions appear.

@Mobycarp great race! So awesome that you had Meb to pace you, and you can actually say you past Meb Keflezighi in a race!
@HonuNui congrats on your 10K. That is impressive that you just wake up, sign up, and run a race.
@simcon1 way to go on your first 5K race! Just over :30 is a great time!
@eleanorhawkins congrats on you 5K as well. I think you should ask your daughter what she wants to do (not necessarily force her to do a run/walk). Somehow running and family are always seem to cause an argument in my house too. Hope you can work it out.1 -

Hah! Well done That is the best way to do it. No pre-race jitters and doubts if there is no time between sign up and race.0 -
@MobyCarp congrats on a nicely run race that shows how prepared you are for Boston. I'm excited for you. How cool to have Meb as a pacer and to run past him. A friend of mine was just posting that in the Atlanta half marathon she was in a few years ago Meb started last and earned $1 for charity for every runner he passed along the way. He raised $23,000.
@HonuNui congrats on your 10K - I did that "wake up and go run an unplanned race" once for a 10k too (and my only 10k race so far). Having no pre-race expectations or jitters was great.
@simcon1 and @eleanorhawkins congrats on you 5Ks!!
This is way in the future (October 2020) but I'm considering doing the I-35 Challenge Kansas City and Des Moines either half or full marathons. You can do any combo, and my friend is planning the full-full combo to get two of her 50 states in. I would do the half-half most likely. Anyone done the I-35? Or just the KC or DSM races? I'm mainly interested because I have friends and family in both places and to support my friend. Not sure how I'd train in terms of having one as a goal race or just trying to survive both. I kind of wish it was this fall because it would be a great goal to work towards now but my friend's marathon schedule is booked way out (she has a 5 year plan to finish the rest of her states). Who are my midwesterners? @7lenny7, @midwesterner (LOL), @kristinegift (former Iowan, right?).2 -
Congrats to all who raced this weekend!
@workaholic_nurse Yikes! That looks and sounds like a horrible wreck. I hope you don't feel too beat up today, and your injuries heal quickly. Sorry about the car (and cows) though.0 -
@workaholic_nurse WOW! So glad you weren't hurt any worse than you were. So sorry about your car. Hopefully your insurance will help you get a new one!
@MobyCarp Great run! Congratulations on your AG 2nd place - esp. when you weren't really trying to win. That's amazing.
@kgirlhart Great pictures of your run. A lot of you have such picturesque places to run. I mostly go up and down my driveway. I may need to change that. LOL
@simcon1 Great race! I hope you find the Garmin works for you. I love mine.
@eleanorhawkins Great race! One perk of being single is that I don't have issues with family about my running/races. Hope you figure that out so that everyone wins.3 -

I agree you should ask her if she wants to run some of it. Depending on her age and how fit she is from other activities, she may be able to run more than you think. My daughter (10) really likes to run but doesn't have a lot of time to train due to other sports. But she gets out every now and then with me and could easily walk/run that distance. Probably more tun than walk. If she is interested, she may surprise you!1 -
i had a rough run. i've been sick with a cold. just in the head but i needed to run. marathon is on the sixth and i've only had a few longer runs and none above 15 lately.
i set out hoping for 20 miles or 5 hours. whichever came first.
the truth is a felt like i was moving well until i looked at my watch. i only had 1 mile under 13min. i just couldn't keep it under 13min as hard as i tried. there was lots of bargaining. just make it to the tree. just make it for another few min. the last 4 miles had more walking than i did since my last hard run.
eventually, i had to call it at 18. i had nothing left to give. the mud on the trail didn't help much either. my abs were so tired i barely had energy to sneeze and cough. the good news is i used my vest and it was awesome. the bite valve took a little practice and i had to take a deep breath. drink. gasp for air. drink. my nose is all stuffed up8 -

Trouble is she's at that age where they know everything (13.5). She can walk it perfectly well, in fact I've been making her walk a lot recently as we're doing a week's hiking holiday along the final 120km or so of the Portuguese variant of the Camino de Santiago at Easter. She could run/walk it perfectly well IF she's listen. BUT she insists on trying to run flat out, gets winded after a couple of minutes then pretends to be dying the rest of the way. Voicing how much she hates running as loudly as possible in the meantime. I really don't know why her father insisted we all sign up for this thing. But then I told her it was ok, that I understand if she doesn't want to do the last one and she said she wants to go. Argh! lol.
@quilteryoyo believe me there are a lot of times I wish I WAS single.

@katharmonic: Minneapolis here!
@eleanorhawkins: I’m a bit of a hardass, but if signing up as a family was your husband’s idea and your daughter wants someone to run/walk with her, it sounds like it’s his job to keep her company.9 -
@eleanorhawkins I wish there were some kind of magic right answer for you, but unfortunately, there isn't. Just keep doing the best that you can and everything will work out.
When I was 13.5, I probably should have been in a Juvenile Detention Center.

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Another nice day to run: temperature in the low 30s F, light breeze, and plenty of sunshine.
Amazing what replacing broken down shoes will do for you. Last week I was feeling bad about my running; this week I'm feeling good. Rest and equipment are as much a part of training as running.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K
6-1 Freedom 5K
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K7
