Morning all. I have a day to myself with no working, yay!! I thought I would mow the back yard but DD surprised me and did it before she left for summer internships, good girl!
I will spend today with DH clearing the decks a bit before another long week of work. The absolute peak of hard work was last week, I only have 2 evening events this week which will feel a lot more doable.
Barbie love the pic of you and family.
Karen in VA If you haven't purchased a fridge yet, I really like the whirlpool brand, the less bells and whistles the better, the fancy schmancy models tend to break down faster in my experience.

Barbie - Your pic is great. You look relaxed and happy. Isn't that great, as I know you are not a natural socialiser!
Waiting to hear if my brother is home.

I commented that I could work on the sleep aspect of my health. Well ... to sum up ...
Machka9 wrote:
Sleep - This I could work on.
I've made quite the discovery just recently.
I have been struggling with sore, red eyes especially first thing in the morning. And I've been struggling with waking up feeling like I've just cycled a century rather than sleeping.
I've tried different things ...
-- drops in my eyes when I wake up
-- no coffee after 5 pm
-- chamomile tea in the evening
-- putting on relaxing music late in the evening before bed and turning down the lights
-- reading something relaxing before I fall asleep
-- a sleep monitor that records what I do in the night ... maybe I do get up and ride a century!
The drops in the morning helped a bit, the relaxing techniques ensured I fell asleep within about 5 minutes, and the sleep monitor revealed I snore a little right at the beginning of the night but then seem to sleep all right.
The other night, about 10 days ago, I was dozing off and somewhere in between that wake and sleep state when I suddenly felt like my eyes weren't entirely closed. Then I got to wondering ... am I sleeping with my eyes slightly open? It is a thing. It does happen to some people.
One of the simplest solutions for that is to put drops in the eyes before bed and to wear an eye mask at night. So I went out and got a lightweight one. That night ... drops in the eyes, eye mask on ... and I had one of the better night's sleeps I've had in a while! Plus my eyes were less red and sore and I was less puffy around the eyes.
I've gone to a bigger, heavier eye mask and have slept with it two nights now. So far, I like it better.
Who would have thought that a simple eye mask would make such a difference!
But there is evidence that blocking out the light can help.

NYKAREN Yes! Thanks...to you and to all who have given me ideas about good refrigerators. Yesterday I noticed one of the Whirlpool basic refrigerators is highly rated. We haven't decided what to do yet, still going around with LG, who wants to fix it for free just 9 months after we went through the same thing last August. If we didn't lose food and have a hassle, it would be an easy decision, but if the linear compressors are defective, and everything points to that, we will be facing the same thing in another 6-12 months. We bought the refrigerator March 2016 and if failed after 2 years, and now again less than a year later. LG linear compressors have a design defect, and the company is not owning the problem.

Yesterday I saw by logging how Thai take out really does add too much sugar sodium & fat to my day.
Goal: eat/drink protein with every meal
Travel with lunchbag w/ freezer pack stocked with carrots, celery, and grapes or blueberries riding shotgun
Make sure a nutritious dinner is at home waiting.
Think of this change as adding health & nutrition, not cutting out things I love (glass half full). Ex: instead of “No eating before bedtime” substitute “herbal tea or warm (skim) milk before bedtime.”
Negatively phrased statements feel punitive & judgemental.
I’d love to build up my yoga practice/mindfulness now that I am graduating from my MSW program (a huge personal accomplishment at age 53). Any advice?.
TY & have a beautiful day!

Hey folks!!
Thank you to everyone who participated in our poll for a new reaction. We had a very clear winner.
The winning vote goes to... Woo!
Since Woo is a different type of reaction than anything we've enabled in the past, we're going to start this off in beta mode.
In our community Woo means that you think an idea or approach is too good to be true.

Gosh I'm so far behind only on P38 I hope I'll catch up before the end of the month.
My get up and go has gone (again!) Had a few sleepless nights which I think is why I'm so tired today. Managed to get some housework done, and went to see dad, doctor has been and said nothing more they can do but to keep him comfortable. It is horrible to see the shell of a man he has become, he was always so full of life and fun.
Love to all

Morning, all... first time in a bit that I've had the will or energy to work on the quilt I've been putting together for the silent auction - and many of you know I'm also a writer and a painter.
Just my little bit of creative thought process for a quiet Sunday morning--it's not the creation of anything that's the hard part. It's silencing the running commentary from the critics that yammer at me from inside my own head while I'm working on any creative piece.
Note: They are the exact same ones that look at this body in the mirror and say, "Why try to change it? You will fail."
Back to my quilting--not letting the voices win today.
(And for those who think my cheese has slid right off my cracker, pardon the pop reference, but it's not "A Beautiful Mind." It's just a noisy one. )
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR8 -
Hi, everyone! I am am newbie to this group. I am really tired of not being healthy because of my weight, so, in May, I am working on logging my food on MyFitnessPal and upping my exercise game!

Hello to all! Happy Sunday! I managed to get my shopping done and got out in the yard and got part of my flower beds weeded and also burned the majority of the brush/branches in our fire pit. It has been raining off and on all morning. Colin is going to mow the back yard for me, while I finish the weeding and finish burning the last of the brush/bigger tree limbs.
Yesterday, Tim and I noticed a pair of Robins checking out the small-ish (6 foot) pine tree in front of the kitchen window. This morning I woke up and looked out the window and they (the robins) had a substantial beginning to a nest built! Over the past couple of hours they have built it up quite nicely! Funny to watch them. The male flies away and comes back with a bit of grass, string, fluff in his beak and he sets it on the base that they have built; then the female dances around on it and wiggles her body around on it. After the male makes a few trips with a bit of this and that, the female goes out (as if totally impatient with his efforts) and returns with a large beakful of debris. lol I can almost hear her scolding him "Oh, for god's sake! The way you are doing it, it is going to take forEVER!" This is working out well, because this upcoming week is backyard games week. So the kids and I will be playing all sorts of games in the backyard. That will give this little birdie couple time to settle in and lay some eggs. I might just keep the kids in the backyard for a few weeks until the eggs hatch.
I have a Maytag refrigerator. It is a basic single door, freezer on top, no water/ice dispenser. I think we caught a sale and paid around $450 for it. We have had it for eight years. I have noticed that about once a month it leaks out of the bottom (which probably means I need to clean off the coils). But other than that, it has worked fine. When it poops out on us; I would like to get one with the freezer on the bottom. Tim has a hard time getting into the lower shelves of the fridge, so maybe if the design was reversed (freezer on bottom), it might work better for him. The way our kitchen is configured, we can't have a double door refrigerator, though.
Heather- Love the polka dots! Your dance venue looks fantastic! I can tell the "serious" dancers! They have the dancing shoes! lol What fun! Glad your brother is being taken care of. Knock on wood, stones are not something I have had to experience.
Barbie- Love the pic of you, Jake and your in-laws! You all look like you are enjoying the night together!
Rebecca- Athena Rose! What a beauty!
I made mushroom and broccoli calzones last night for Colin and I (Tim was not feeling well). They turned out nice and Colin really enjoyed them. I am not big on bread, so I think next time I make them, I will just put the veggies in a bowl and eat just a piece of bread with them. I have about a dozen mini bella mushrooms left that I will make a mushroom soup with and I also have four portabello mushroom caps that I have plans to fill and grill this week. Trying to incorporate a couple of meat free "veg heavy" meals. Tim is allergic to mushrooms, so I will be putting together some black bean burgers today and freezing those to grill along with the mushrooms. The first of the sweet corn has finally hit the produce shelves here. It is still a bit pricey because the corn is just beginning to come up in the fields, locally, so what is on the shelves is from Cali and the southern states. BUT...I got about six ears. The corn looked so sweet and white and delish, I couldn't resist.
Well, I guess I better get out and finish the weeding and get the fire going in the fire pit. I have to hit the library today. Going to try to get there around 2:30 or 3:00; that will give me time to get the yard work done and shower, again. Three showers in two days! Spring is definitely here.
Love and hugs to all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)5 -
Here's what I did yesterday, with my oldest son's help. I should have taken a before. The patio set was so covered in moss and tree grime and some rust. We scrubbed them with simple green and steel wool, finished with towels, then three coats of spray paint. I added the seat cushions and pillow, and my mother remembered that she had an umbrella, so we pulled that out of a shed, and set it up. We are also working on the deck surface. We have a long way to getting it in shape, but we are done for this trip. I am beat and sore.

Karen in VA: We have a Whirlpool Refrigerator/Freezer with Dutch doors on the top and a roll out freezer drawer on the bottom. We love everything about it. The ice maker is in the door. It needs to be dumped and let to refill once in a while because we aren’t heavy ice users. Good luck shopping. I hope others will also pitch in with refrigerator reviews.
Sharon near Seattle: I love your heartwarming story of a great second marriage. It is an example filled with hope. :flowerforyou:
Carol in GA: My DSIL & DBIL go to a Silver Sneakers gym and they are amazing. I go to a gym that accepts my health plan, too. That is where I take yoga and used exercise bikes to burn calories. There are lots of seniors at this place and we all tend to come in the mornings. People who are workers during the day come in the evening.
Machka: I love the beauty of your area. Wow! Congratulations on the success or wearing an eye mask. I have one right beside my bed and use it when necessary. It can make a wonderful difference.
Heather: I am happy to hear that swing dance was great fun. You look great!
Rebecca: Congrats all around—you have a delightful and healthy granddaughter, Athena Rose, AND you have lost weight. WTG!!!
Barbie: I love the group photo of you & Jake & his Brother in SIL. What a wonderful memory!
Viv UK: I am so sorry about your dad’s situation. ::sad:
CBDV: Welcome to a great group. :smiley
Felicia: The patio set looks fabulous. Your hard work has created a miracle. :flowerforyou:
Yesterday I helped my Equestrian group clear trails in a county park that is often used for trail rides. I had a grand time, and then missed my turn to go home and had a long ride in the countryside before eventually getting home.
We had distressing news from our son. His DMIL has been diagnosed with several cancers. Our DIL will be staying with her to provide help and support for the treatments that she is facing. Our son has to work and will be on his own for the next while. He’ll visit when he can.

Bit the bullet and ordered a used Wii U to replace my busted original Wii. Haven't been weighing in with predictable results, want to get back to weighing, playing on the Wii Fit balance board. Kinda glad the new, expensive Nintendo Edge doesn't yet have a balance board compatible game, so I wasn't tempted to spend the $$$.
Grateful for my plastic "grass" non-slip bath mats. Removed them the day the roofers installed the exhaust fan and was too rushed to put them back. Poor choice. I'd forgotten how slick tub floors are. Showered very gingerly hanging on to safety bar with first one hand then the other. The mats are back in and I am grateful!
Rebecca, your "messy" son is way tidier than I am and your "sometimes you just know" story, made me grin big!
Mary prayers for Linda. Does her shower have non-slip stickers or mats? ;}
Michele, did I understand that PJ will go to the daycare where Denise works? So when she goes back to work, she'll still be "with" him? The air fryer baked potatoes sound great. olive oil, yes will make skins even crispier. Foil wrapped, not so much, makes the innards too gummy for my taste ;} Who made me such a potato expert? Oops, but my maiden name IS Kennedy and I lived on twice baked potatoes for the 7 years I was a "veg"... ;}
Lanette, Machka (14 flights of stairs!!!), Carol amen on typing messages rather than texting or (shudder) Heaven forfend calling and talking! With me, I'm afraid it's a control issue, that's why sometimes my daily goal is to actually call X and listen. ;}
Julie "I can see how I'm wont to just drop everything (cleaning, exercise, etc.) from time to time, but it makes me feel worse." true words this! So which vocabulary word's mime had you laughing so hard?
pip that pg 38 Kirby pic was mouth-watering But even better was the romantic, wild, crazy story of your meeting and running away together after only knowing each other for 3 weeks. So sad for how your family treated you and Lenny, even sadder for Lenny's affliction. So delighted Kirby the blessing hottie came into your life!
Sharon 'map person' me too. Never could understand why one of my favorite cozy mystery authors said that people with maps should be discouraged at once.
Machka "might have to be sedated" for Sharon's shot in the eye. No "might" about it. Captured, tied down, sedated, then MAYBE...
Barbie, what a great pic of you and Jake! Your smiles say so much about you both!
Tracey "grandfather hadn't put the seat down" Grampa! Really?!? Bet Michaela never ever ever again "goes" without checking the seat first . . .for the rest of her life!
Kay ((hugs)) "so over..." with you on that.
welcome luxyp
Only through pg 40...
Today I will: go back to church (after skipping the last 3 Sundays), Freddie's, weed around fruit trees, walk Tumble to the cistern, make chicken mushroom alfredo...better get to it!
Lighter, lovelies!
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD

My brother is home and feeling good, but 'a bit tired'. Have I ever said how much I love my brother?
I went for a 5k today to iron out kinks. Who would have thought once upon a time that I now think of 5k as a 'short' run.
I called in on an Open House on the way back and saw a print of a painting of the seafront where we walk/run most days. I might get it if DH approves next weekend. Out of all the pictures it was the only one with three red dots against it, meaning three people want a print.
Carol - My DH said last night that, although he had started going dancing just for me, he had no idea how much he would actually enjoy it!!!!!! I think it has a lot to do with the 'community' who go and the really great music. He has also gained a bit of confidence and realises no one is judging him. Yesterday he realised he actually had more idea than some of the others. Quite a turn around.
KJ - I want DH to get some of those two tone shoes. He can also wear them on the cruise for ballroom dancing. Yesterday we sort of remembered a bit of the Tango we learnt on our last cruise. It wasn't correct, but we moved around ok!
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx4 -

I am home !! the weather turned out lovely, today ... left Albany around 5:45 am.. and got home around 8, running on fumes.. was not going to buy gas on the turnpike... I made it to the gas station and filled up and went down to nursing home and fed DFIL, he ate great .. had cream of wheat ,eggs, a waffle and some root beer and a milk.. and an ice cream with meds in it.. hey whatever works...
and his brother and sister in law and his nephew came down to visit at lunchtime and stayed till a little bit ago... DFIL again ate well... and promptly fell asleep .. full belly and all.. so will go down at dinnertime.. but I have laundry in the dryer so might lie down for a bit.. I am tired.. tossed and turned from 1 am on..
Had a blast this weekend..7 -
Heather: I’m happy to hear that your brother is home and feeling good.
I'm having a lazy day at home so far. I've done a little puttering in the kitchen—just enough to clean up the counters and steam some hard cooked eggs.

Felicia ... I have "patio envy!"
Rebecca ... Athena Rose is beautiful!
Allie ... so glad you enjoyed your weekend.
Kay ... you have had a time of it for sure ... so sorry for all the losses.
Karen VA We have a GE. Specifically wanted a GE because it had been so good to us in the past and it was supposedly American made. Nothing today, however, is made with the standards of yesteryear and just about everything has parts from somewhere else (found out when trying to order parts that our model had been outsourced to Mexico). This GE, cost about $2000 is over 7 years old and I would say it's pretty much junk. French doors, bottom freezer, ice maker in the door. I love all the features. Don't love the service problems we've had. Our extended warranty is over, so out it will go when the next major problem occurs. And I will not pay so much again for an appliance.
Older son has pretty much returned to normal since his oral surgery. Went to pick him up today from his place and he was eating a hotdog! Had issues with the agency that is running his house. When we dropped him off yesterday morning, we discovered there was literally no food in the house for 3 men and no plans to purchase any. Let's just say I lit a fire under some very lazy rear-ends. Not the fault of the staff ... poor planning by the site-manager. Today the house is stuffed with food.
I went to the May wedding I was talking about. After all that shopping, I ended up wearing dressy slacks and a very dressy top. I don't know why I worried. Saw everything from a girl who literally was just wearing a bra with her gauzy pants to jeans and sneakers?? We attended the church ceremony and only stayed for about 3 hours of the reception .... very slow food service. I wanted to see them cut the cake, but ate something that didn't agree with me and developed severe stomach pains. Fortunately the pains didn't last once home and I seem to be fine today.

Beth - Isn't it great when you get older and realise that no one is looking at you and most people don't have a clue! I always tell myself, when I'm getting ready for an occasion, that I'm not going to be on the red carpet for the Oscars and no paparazzi are lying in wait for me. I used to worry about the least little bit of smudged nail varnish. Now I really don't care. I'm going to a school year reunion at the end of July. I want to look good, but I don't have to be perfect. Right now I hope I don't put on weight with all the food I'm eating, but I tell myself, I'm nearly 70 and so are they.

Karen in VA, I don't have a make of fridge that I would recommend, but I would strongly suggest you NOT get a Samsung. I have one, and to be fair, it works great, but (there's always a but! lol) this is the second one, the first one never did work properly, the tech was out to our place 7 (yes 7!) times fixing, replacing one part or another. He finally had enough and recommended that Samsung give us a replacement. This whole process took about 3 months and I was getting quite livid about all the runaround I was getting when trying to call customer service. I finally talked to someone who told me not to bother with trying to explain to the first person that answered but to ask for customer continuity or something like that. It's a step above basic customer service, these folks have more power and can authorize more stuff.

Evelyn That's enlightening about customer continuity. Maybe LG has that. I will check. I am applying for reimbursement for spoilage for our 2018 debacle. Can't apply for this episode until the tech is out and confirms that it isn't somehow our fault that the refrigerator is 50 degrees and food is spoiling. I wonder how much they will actually reimburse. Anything is better than nothing.3

Are too much for dinner, it was Mexican night, and that's my Kryptonite!!
Tomorrow will be a lean eating day.

I had plenty of energy today for walking dogs and riding my exercise bike but no brain energy for anything that required thinking. I'll be in bed early and after some sleep should be ready to tackle something that makes use of my brain. All the left-overs are gone and tomorrow I'll be back to eating my regular food. Thanks to all the sodium, the scale tells me that I'm a blimp.
Heather, your dancing event looked like fun and you looked great.
Allie, I know you'll take the spiritual rejuvenation of your weekend with you to work.

Had good weekend. Walked with friend at reservoir yesterday for an hour and forty five minutes. Was good to be outside. Even though it wasn't that hot then (mid 70s), heat still bothered me. The thyroid suppression therapy makes me heat intolerant. I dress light in warm weather. Wear vented hat. Have scarf type things that have frozen ice packs in them. I decided the last year or two that I may have to try to be sensible, but I will not give up on all activities outside. As it gets warmer, I will take outside walks in early morning or evenings. On really bad days, just use treadmill or recumbent bike.
Church today. Had extremely high winds here today and some storms (more moving in), so in addition to early morning treadmill, did another bout this pm for about 50 minutes. Have had over 100,000 steps each of the last two weeks.
Good luck to all searching for refrigerators and other such items. I went with whirlpool for the kitchen appliances I bought when I redid kitchen a couple of years ago-have been happy with them thus far, but it is only me using them so can't speak to what they would be like with heavy use. Hope they are the last set I ever have to buy!
Tomorrow is weigh-in day. Have done well with calories and exercises so am hopeful. Also, going to SIL after work. My husband's half sister is in from Switzerland. We only met her once, but we liked her. Going to try to take a day off while she is here and take her to outlet malls (she loves to shop). Her English is not bad so we are able to communicate.5
