Things people say when you lose weight

"Please don't report me to HR or EEO or anything, but how much weight have you lost? You look fantastic."
I had been afraid no one at work noticed my hard work. Turned out they were all afraid to make a comment and get reported for harassment. (I'm the only woman at a construction company.)

"You've lost a lot of weight haven't you?"
"What did you do to lose that much?"
They're all very surprised when I say that I'm not on a diet but just watch and weigh what I eat.
Most annoying question is: "I don't want to be rude, but do you mind if I ask how much you've lost?"
They're curious about my weight now and my weight then, I used to be secretive about that, but I'm getting used to just being open about it and receiving the "compliments".9 -
I've received a variety of responses to my 62 lb. weight loss, a mix of negative and positive:
Negative:
"You look pale. I think you need to stop losing weight."
"Don't get too skinny."
"Have you lost weight?" (-very overweight coworker who sits next to me after I've lost like 65 lbs.... Um, yes.)
"If you lose any more weight you're going to disappear."
Positive:
"You look totally different from the last time I saw you."
"You look great/amazing/very nice."
"You're so tiny."
"You've done an incredible job."
"You're my inspiration."
"I see other people lose weight but gain it back, but you have continued losing. What have you been doing?"

Today a coworker told me. "Look at you, girl, you're withering away!"
From anyone else this would have seemed rude and been very annoying, but this particular coworker always means well and she said it beaming from ear to ear and followed it up by asking what I've been doing. She looked shocked when I told her that I only work out when I feel like it and when I don't I just don't.9 -

I had a relative that would always want to do this after we went to the gym. Update: she's still fat.

One that really peeves me off is, "Keep losing weight, and soon you won't need your cane anymore." I don't use a cane because I'm too fat to walk. People much larger than I am can walk without assistive devices. I use a cane because I was injured in a car accident. Even if I lose another 100 pounds, that's never going away.50

That is really awful.

I had just completed a difficult 4 days over 2 cities across the county to present to Gonvernment auditor. A very stress full time but I rocked it and passed all audits. My boss was traveling with me and when we parted at the airport to go to separate sides of the country, she hugged me and said she was so proud of me. I was on cloud nine, she did notice what a rock star job I had done! But then, right after she said she was proud, she said "loosing weight is very hard". Nice either way but it took away from the excellent work I had done for the audits. I will take it anyway!19

I was able to dig deep into the bottom of the drawer where I keep my shorts and they fit. I wore them to paint a room because I had written them off.11

What I'm finding interesting these days is talking to people who didn't know me in the 'before' days. They all assume that I can't understand the trials and tribulations of dieting, on the grounds that I'm 'lovely and slim'. Even when I tell them I used to be very fat, they tend to assume I mean a few vanity pounds.
There does seem to be a general unconscious assumption in society that those who are slim have always been and will always be so, and those who are fat have always been and will always be so. This strikes me as... unhelpful.54 -
@ceiswyn I worked with a woman like you. I've known her for more than 25 years and she has always been very thin. She had told me that she used to be heavy and like your co-workers I didn't believe her. I have since apologized to her because the first time I lost weight I had the exact same experience. She just laughed, but unlike me, she kept off the weight for more than 25 years. Thru a bad marriage, having her job eliminated, parents passing, etc. she figured it out and stuck to it. It gives me hope for this second round.38

Oh, yes!! People never believe me that I used to be almost 60 lbs heavier. ESPECIALLY because I'm blessed with awesome genetics and have no loose skin to speak of, just stretch marks.
I'll show them old pictures and they just squint at it and say, "That's not even you, that doesn't look like you."
Well, no kidding. Lose over 50 lbs and someone's face is DEFINITELY not going to look the same 😂15 -
I got pulled aside by a work colleague and asked if i had developed HIV and this was the reason i looked so slim in the face!21

I can definitely relate to this also! So many people think I mean I went from like a size 16 to 10/12...not 26/28 to 10/12. Or they assume I'm exaggerating when I say I've lost well over 100 lb, especially if they see face-only pics because I always had a thinner face for my weight (no double chin for example) so it looks like maybe someone who dropped ~30 or max 50 lb, if you see a facial side by side.
My husband has the same issue as well. He's 6'2" broadly built/muscular and around 230 lb. In high school, he was almost 400 lb. People notice his weight loss but estimate he lost 60 lb or say "you weren't that big when you were younger, you're just a big guy". I think a lot of people have a skewed idea of what x number of pounds looks like.19 -
When I lost weight the first time I lost 125 pounds. I'd go to meetings with my boss and she would brag on me and say yes, Kris has lost a lot of weight, in fact, she lost me (implying I lost as much as she weighed). It didn't bother me because I thought it was funny and she was so tiny. Of course, after I put half of it back on it wasn't as funny. I would show pics too to convince them. The change isn't as dramatic this time like you say from a size 20 to a size 14 is a lot but not from a size 24/26 in my case to a size 12/14.

I got my first "but you'll be a stick!" when I mentioned how much left I had to lose, lol. It didn't really bother me, and this guy is cool, he wasn't concern trolling. Actually made me feel kind of nice that someone thought I was thin, 'cause sometimes I over-analyze my body and think I'm still way too big. Once I explained how I only had 10 to be within a healthy weight range, and that I just wanted to be in the middle so that a fluctuation didn't pop me back into overweight, he totally understood. He just said he wanted to get back into it again, that his brother was doing weight watchers.3

I seem to be losing very slowly now that I am past menopause. I’ve lost 13 pounds so far. Only comment so far has been, “oh I can tell you’ve lost - you’re face is thinner.”
That was nice. I have 42 pounds left to go. I am breaking it down into 10% increments in order not to get discouraged.
If anyone has any advice for me I am all ears!

Me: "I gained 10 pounds back after the 50 I lost and feel awful. I am really struggling. I am committing to getting that 10 pounds back off"
Close Relative: "Oh you look just fine now....you just looked so gaunt before. To thin and Unhealthy!"
WOW!
Thanks so much for the encouragement! (Sarcasm here)
