Things people say when you lose weight

I was able to dig deep into the bottom of the drawer where I keep my shorts and they fit. I wore them to paint a room because I had written them off.11

What I'm finding interesting these days is talking to people who didn't know me in the 'before' days. They all assume that I can't understand the trials and tribulations of dieting, on the grounds that I'm 'lovely and slim'. Even when I tell them I used to be very fat, they tend to assume I mean a few vanity pounds.
There does seem to be a general unconscious assumption in society that those who are slim have always been and will always be so, and those who are fat have always been and will always be so. This strikes me as... unhelpful.54 -
@ceiswyn I worked with a woman like you. I've known her for more than 25 years and she has always been very thin. She had told me that she used to be heavy and like your co-workers I didn't believe her. I have since apologized to her because the first time I lost weight I had the exact same experience. She just laughed, but unlike me, she kept off the weight for more than 25 years. Thru a bad marriage, having her job eliminated, parents passing, etc. she figured it out and stuck to it. It gives me hope for this second round.38

Oh, yes!! People never believe me that I used to be almost 60 lbs heavier. ESPECIALLY because I'm blessed with awesome genetics and have no loose skin to speak of, just stretch marks.
I'll show them old pictures and they just squint at it and say, "That's not even you, that doesn't look like you."
Well, no kidding. Lose over 50 lbs and someone's face is DEFINITELY not going to look the same 😂15 -
I got pulled aside by a work colleague and asked if i had developed HIV and this was the reason i looked so slim in the face!21

I can definitely relate to this also! So many people think I mean I went from like a size 16 to 10/12...not 26/28 to 10/12. Or they assume I'm exaggerating when I say I've lost well over 100 lb, especially if they see face-only pics because I always had a thinner face for my weight (no double chin for example) so it looks like maybe someone who dropped ~30 or max 50 lb, if you see a facial side by side.
My husband has the same issue as well. He's 6'2" broadly built/muscular and around 230 lb. In high school, he was almost 400 lb. People notice his weight loss but estimate he lost 60 lb or say "you weren't that big when you were younger, you're just a big guy". I think a lot of people have a skewed idea of what x number of pounds looks like.19 -
When I lost weight the first time I lost 125 pounds. I'd go to meetings with my boss and she would brag on me and say yes, Kris has lost a lot of weight, in fact, she lost me (implying I lost as much as she weighed). It didn't bother me because I thought it was funny and she was so tiny. Of course, after I put half of it back on it wasn't as funny. I would show pics too to convince them. The change isn't as dramatic this time like you say from a size 20 to a size 14 is a lot but not from a size 24/26 in my case to a size 12/14.

I got my first "but you'll be a stick!" when I mentioned how much left I had to lose, lol. It didn't really bother me, and this guy is cool, he wasn't concern trolling. Actually made me feel kind of nice that someone thought I was thin, 'cause sometimes I over-analyze my body and think I'm still way too big. Once I explained how I only had 10 to be within a healthy weight range, and that I just wanted to be in the middle so that a fluctuation didn't pop me back into overweight, he totally understood. He just said he wanted to get back into it again, that his brother was doing weight watchers.3

I seem to be losing very slowly now that I am past menopause. I’ve lost 13 pounds so far. Only comment so far has been, “oh I can tell you’ve lost - you’re face is thinner.”
That was nice. I have 42 pounds left to go. I am breaking it down into 10% increments in order not to get discouraged.
If anyone has any advice for me I am all ears!

Me: "I gained 10 pounds back after the 50 I lost and feel awful. I am really struggling. I am committing to getting that 10 pounds back off"
Close Relative: "Oh you look just fine now....you just looked so gaunt before. To thin and Unhealthy!"
WOW!
Thanks so much for the encouragement! (Sarcasm here)

Wow. He might as well just go tell all your friends you're dying. People are so...... adjectives fail. lol7 -
Had someone comment at my running group that before I was a porker and huge. Still stings. Went from around 220 to 160 but still I never thought I was huge. 😒32

I joined the other senior citizens for Amtrak early boarding and was mistaken for a business class passenger...evidently did not look over 65 to the Amtrak staff! Guess a few years vanished along with the pounds.19

I have had all positive comments, nothing negative. Looking good, doing good along those lines. I have had the have you lost weight questions from people I haven't seen in awhile, as well.4

Good: “You are looking fit”
Frustrating: “you don’t have any weight to lose” or “don’t get obsessed with your new diet”
Best :- "you look like a teenager, so youthful"
Worst :- "stop starving yourself"7 -

Or, “you look too thin!” Usually from someone who is much, much further away than you are from being too thin.6 -
A surprising number of people ask me if I am losing weight on purpose.4

I’m sorry but this is ridiculous and should be called out. There’s aren’t weight-related words that are as offensive as racial slurs. Weight related insults are certainly uncalled for because people should be nice to one another, but weight is also something that can be changed. A person can’t change the color of their skin. Calling someone a fatty or a porker is for sure rude and mean, but isnt comparable to calling someone the n-word.40 -
I have a coworker that I absolutely adore and nearly every day I walk by and she either wolf whistles or says "hubba hubba". Makes me feel good!4

10000% agreed.11 -
An overweight person in my life, who has been on 5 different eating plans, has told me 3 times I am "obsessed".
I told her no, I'm committed, focused, and learning.28 -
I’ve lost around 41 pounds since February with the help of MFP, calorie counting and some cardio now and again. My starting weight was 184lbs. In the beginning, family told me I was doing great but now I’m getting comments such as “You’ll need to watch what you’re doing, you’re losing a LOT of weight” and “You’re getting skinny, you need to stop now”
I’m far from skinny at 5”5 and 143lbs. Yes, I’ve lost a significant amount of weight and I do look slimmer but I’m definitely not skinny. I’m also in the healthy weight range of the BMI chart. If I’m seen eating a piece of chocolate or crisps, the same relatives will say Ohh, you shouldn’t be eating that, should you? 🙄
I feel like I can’t win. One minute they tell me I should stop losing weight and the next, they tell me I shouldn’t be eating certain things if I’m trying to lose weight 🤷♀️ Talk about a mindf*#ck!34 -
Friend: "You don't have cancer, do you?"
Me: "I hope not. I've been on a diet"
Friend: "Oh, that's a relief! Err, well done on the diet."5
