I'm looking forward to doing that when the weather gets better. I find walking barefoot in the sand seems to help the arthritis in my feet.

Margaret - what lake were you at when you were walking on the beach? I have been to just about all the lakes down in that area. I would be able to picture where you were walking on the beach. Kind of fun to know somebody in Minnesota!!

Machka - Had to laugh at your weather report for Tasmania! We have pretty much the same thing, only it's Hot, Holy Cow Hot, When Will It End, and Fall. But with at least one annual hard freeze long enough to kill anything that isn't protected. Oh, and about the Love List, it's free of charge. Google "Stephen Sandifer My Love List." The legal side of things will differ, of course, but it's still a nice guide for getting the basic facts down.
Being sick, I had temporarily forgotten about this, but I've downloaded it now. Thank you!If you read, do you use an ebook? I was dubious at first because I love the printed page, but traveling is much easier since I quit having to lug bags of heavy books around! My Nook fits in my purse so I always have something to read when I'm standing in line, etc. And I do regularly check out ebooks from the Central Texas Digital Library.

I read real books. I stare at a screen for so much of my day, that it's a luxury to read a real paper-and-print book.
Now speaking of books, since my husband's accident, I've been locating and re-reading a lot of "children's" books. I find them easy to read, relaxing, and they bring back memories of an easier time. I just finished reading a Mary Poppins and now I'm reading Little Women. It's interesting reading these again after many decades. I find myself thinking about the time they were written, the history at the time, the author, and things like that which I didn't think about when I read them as a child.

Barbie – on Hoopla I can only check out 3 books per month. Thankfully, the only limit on Overdrive is that you can’t have more than 5 checked out at any one time
Rori – how wonderful for your brother…and you
Got back from seeing “Hair”. It was good, so much talent! I must be getting old….I remember when I went to see “Menopause the Musical” in Philly. At the end the audience could go on stage and dance. I did, even tho I left Vince in the audience. Now here they did that and I really didn’t want to get on stage. It’s Hickory, not Philly. Wonder why I felt that way? At the end the one guy came out draped in the American flag. At one point it was touching the ground. I thought for sure the Vietnam Vets in the audience would take offense at that, but no one said anything.

Mary It was Lake Phalen. He lives about three blocks from the Beach. They also have a nice trail around the beach. The trail is about 3 miles long. I didn't do that today. Too warm for that. This is also where they have the Dragon Festival.4

Library ebooks my library uses RBDigital. It’s not my favorite. It didn’t work on my Kindle Paperwhite or my old Kindle Fire. It works on my iPad and phone but it is a serious battery suck. I ended up buying a new Kindle Fire. There are things I like it about it and things I hate, but it is the only option for checking out ebooks from my library. It also handles audiobooks and magazines. I really need to try an audiobook for when I’m walking, but I haven’t done it yet.

Margaret - I’m very familiar with that area. I had friends that I visited near there. I got my tattoos at a friends apartment. I remember attending an event there. We may have crossed paths in the past.

Hi All, I am new to the forum and have been using MFP for a while. I lost 14 pounds using Noom. Now I am transitioning back over to MFP to continue the logging of my food and exercise after my Noom experience ends in October. I just turned 59 a few weeks ago and am maintaining my new weight so far. I have been at my goal weight for nearly a month. I have lost weight many times only to regain it. I am hopeful to keep it off now. I am 8 months post op on total knee replacement and am back mountain biking, hiking and am looking forward to skiing this winter. Life is good right now! I am glad to be a part of this group.11

Also swung by Bunnings to get more gardening stuff for my husband. It's planting season!! He enjoys gardening, so I'm happy to get him what he needs for that.

Terri - The A level I did was Latin Translation with Roman History. I too adore learning about ancient civilisations. Have you visited Egypt? We had a fantastic 3 week trip there. My favourites are the Latin American ones.
Welcome serevogel! Can we please have a name and location after each post. It helps us oldies!

Rori - just wanted to pop in before my day gets too hectic to say how glad I am that you are taking steps to widen your social circle. I remember when I used to travel to my mother's and look after her for a short while. I found myself transmogrifying into a semblance of her. I think if I had stayed around her longer I would have aged well before my time. It is so important to keep your own life going and not subsume it to anyone else.
Love you.
Love to all the carers and lovers and those who live alone. We all have our different struggles. Holding on to our sense of self is so important.

Heather - very well said... and something I need to start doing here. I need to become part of my environment here, as well, and start to do things like go to city council meetings. The hard part is the beginning.
Rori - sorry for the incipient heart attack. I got a little precious with that, but once the hour goes by, can't edit our posts, or I probably would have. I'm pleased for you that your brother is going to stay in the area... but does the fact that he's made friends with a bartender mean that he's drinking again? I know that you were awfully worried about that situation earlier on, if it's the same brother.
As Heather said, my heart goes out to all of you who are caring for another, even if it's a matter of simply prodding them to go take care of themselves. For those like Rori and Machka, I stand in awe of your strength, and that's not an exaggeration. I'm not sure that I could find it within me to do what you do on a daily, weekly, monthly basis, and you simply continue. Much respect to you both, as well as everyone caring for a loved one.
More on the next steps for me in a separate post.

So...had a long conversation with my husband last night, as we actually went out for dinner - a fairly rare thing for us, maybe three or four times a year. Terrific dinner--I had the shrimp and grits, he had some Cajun mish-mosh thing, and I gave him all the Cajun sausage out of my dish. Still couldn't eat all mine, and he ended up eating a couple of my grilled shrimp and quite a bit of the grits. Something he's done all ten years we've been married is finish my restaurant dishes, and often enough my dinner at home.
Putting the upshot of the conversation in a spoiler, not to be precious again (I swear), just to make it easy to skip over for those who aren't interested. It's OK, you don't have to be. We're good.During that conversation we talked about the fact that applying for the job, and going to the interviews, as well as withdrawing the application, was part of the overall adjustment I'm making to a permanent life here. As those who know me are aware, I've moved all my adult life, first as a member of the Air Force, then married to an Air Force enlisted man, then after I left him, marrying a man with a taste for adventure and change. We bought this house as our permanent home in July 2018, I got the job I have now in December 2018, and I'm still trying to figure out how to be a person who lives in the same place for the rest of her life. And now, apparently someone who works for the same company for a significant period of time.
Bluntly, the longest job I've EVER had was the Air Force for four years, and they shoot you if you leave. OK, that's an exaggeration, but they will put you in jail if you leave without telling anyone. Since I left the Air Force at 23, when I chose, or when I moved, I've simply changed jobs. Considering I've moved from one house, city, state, or country to another more than 30 times as adult, there have been a lot of moves, and a lot of jobs. I've moved three times just since I got to know the ladies in this group the last four years! And in that time, have had four jobs-business proposal manager, managing editor, development manager, and now grant writer.
That's not bragging - that's explaining that, in a life that has known little but change, making a decision NOT to change jobs was kinda huge for me. I had to accept that some things aren't going to change about how decisions are made, and that I can either suck that up or move on. I chose to stay. Which has other ripples... but mainly that, in staying, I need to shut off the job board announcements that flood my inbox. I need to no longer be open to the next thing, and instead, just bloom where I've planted myself. Not a hardship, I might add. While the pay isn't super amazing, many non-profits like this one make it up in benefits:- Off on Fridays after 1:30 p.m.
- 20 days vacation a year, not accrued, you're simply entitled to them starting October 1 of each year.
- 8 to 10 paid days off during the weeks of Christmas and New Year each year--the entire office shuts down.
- Work at home 90 percent of the time - I go into the office once a month for all-staff and then whenever I have grants to print, or materials to print out for a grant meeting.
I don't know how things are going to work out with the new supervisor (I move over under her management on October 1) but I plan on killing her with kindness, largely. Bless her, she's micromanaged her current person unmercifully, but I'm hoping it's a matter of perception--and distance. She's literally an hour away, I won't see her often, and as long as I keep her informed on what I'm doing, I think she'll cool her jets with me. I hope she will, anyway. As someone at work that I love dearly told me, I'm secure enough to simply say, "no, you're wrong about that," when I know I'm in the right--as well as secure enough to say, "yes, you're right, thank you for the advice," when that's actually the situation.
Off to go turn off the electronic job boards. I can't even imagine not knowing what the job situation is like out there. And, if it's anything like romance, the minute I'm no longer open, they'll come a-calling.
Whew! OK, I'm done now. Thank you to those who read my navel-gazing, thumbs-up to those who didn't.
Later, y'all,

Hello everyone.
Ah, Saturday. The day those of us whom work M-F dream of throughout the work week. It was a very early morning for me. Up at 3:30 am and laid in bed until 4:00 am hoping to fall back asleep. Completed the morning routine - coffee, weigh in, make bed, etc..
Yesterday I decided I would walk to the grocery this morning (it's about a mile away). I made it in under 15 minutes. I was extremely happy with the time. The body has been adjusting even though I have been a sloth for the past year and a half or so. Many baby steps over the past four weeks (I started by walking in place during commercials).
The most amazing thing happened during my walk. A flock of Ibis' landed around me (approximately 30). There were many teenagers (brown feathers) in the group. I walked by slowly and spoke softly to them and was able to walk within 2 feet of them. The experience was the silver lining since it had started to rain on my way back home.
I hope everyone has a fabulous day/evening.

Morning, I’ve been skimming and unable to absorb information, I am still committed to supporting you all and adding to the comradery when I can though—and I know you all understand that!!
Work is incredibly challenging and I drove home and told DH I couldn’t make it the full four years of work that would give us the most stable pension — his response— we will deal with it, you come first— it’s your call. Yesterday was a very emotion packed day, colleague’s are turning to me for advice and support but it is draining. I will have to look a little deeper at my journals and habits to see what else I could add or delete to help with this level of stress. DH says first things first get back to exercise!!! So Off i go.

Did Michelle Dozois Shape Up DVD then because it was short I also did a DVD for the exercise ball. The plan for tomorrow is to do Kathy Smith’s Power Walk DVD
Serevo…welcome, come back often
Lisa – your spoiler was so insightful
Want to make these ginger pumpkin muffins for the gal who lets me go to the Y for free but I need instant butterscotch pudding. I thought I had it, but what I have is the cook & serve type so I need to exchange it at the store. I also need to pick up Loki’s med and get Vince milk so I’m just here waiting for the pharmacy to open
SuziQ – how neat you can walk to the grocery store. There’s a SMALL one near us. You’re in Broward County, huh? Our place is in Brevard
Hmmm…gotta think of other things to do. Maybe I’ll get the chicken ready to marinate so that’ll take some time.
