Monthly question
What is your approach to the upcoming holidays and abundance of food? How will it affect or effect your training or goals?
How old are you? Not chronologically. Is there an age where you knew who you wanted to be and have found that you’ve held tight to it, or perhaps comeback to it years later? What things have always interested you?
Blah blah ——Why’s my hips hurt and yours don’t? Why my mama gotta squish me crooked and yours gave you a condo with a large pool? (I’m tired... just stalling for the next question from the ether to appear)....
You know it’s Rosh Hashanah? L’ Shana Tova. Now forgive me if I’ve offended or been unsupportive of you this year. Y’all know I do love you and wish you a blessed year and riches.
Well, someone other than me has the question I can’t seem to grasp. Out with it.
For the big meals...Thanksgiving and Christmas, I'm going to plan a loooooong run to account for each to account for the calories rather than not be a glutton. Leading up to the meals, I'm going to try to avoid the carby stuff. Maybe cook more veggies. I rarely cook Christmas cookies so that's usually not a problem. I guess I do make Swiss Bratzli's though, and they're a cookie. But they're so thin there can't be any calories, right?
I'm a big fail for Halloween. I bought the big-*kitten* Costco deluxe bag of fun-sized chocolate bars. I've already made a sizable dent in it.

Well, someone other than me has the question I can’t seem to grasp. Out with it.
Here's a question...
What one sport or physical activity have you always wanted to try but haven't yet? Why haven't you tried?
So many options, but the one that comes to my mind right now is yoga. I think that'd really be a good, life-long activity to add to the mix. The reason I haven't yet is lack of time, of course (if I had more time I'd run more...) and cost. I've looked at yoga classes and what I've found is not cheap.4 -
Yes! I really want to find a karate class... maybe kickboxing or taekwondo. Why haven’t I? Well, recently it is because I’m gimpy. But because I’ve been gimpy, I’m ready to try things I’ve only thought about doing. I’d like to find an adult soccer team, but... i kinda suck and don’t want the team to suffer. But if I find one...
I guess I never did it before because it wasn’t a priority, I never made time to pursue it. I likely just took it for granted that I’d be able too “later”.2 -
Holiday food question
Like @7lenny7 I will do long runs the day before/after the holiday, because I will not hold back from the joy of eating holiday meals. They just come around once a year after all
Other sport I've always wanted to try
I have always thought I wanted to go snow skiing, but never have. I used to be a really good water skier, back when I knew someone with a boat. But the cost of snow skiing has always hindered me, plus now that I have Raynaud's, I should probably avoid the bitter cold if I have a choice5 -
What is your approach to the upcoming holidays and abundance of food? How will it affect or effect your training or goals?
I do a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving and I don't go crazy with food. Christmas I usually do a workout (run or weights, depends what is called for). I do tend to eat more because we do brunch with my family and a late lunch/early dinner with DH's family. I don't worry about it and just try to have fun. Because one day isn't going to mess up everything.

This is hard for me. I've recently had an epiphany of sorts about me, my childhood etc and realized I'm only part me. Part of me is nothing. So I've been thinking about who I am and who I want to be lately. Cryptic huh? LOL If you want to know, send me a message. I just don't want to put it out so publically.

Right now I'd like to try stand up paddle boarding. I recently started kayaking and love it so I figure SUP is next. LOL

@RunsOnEspresso no worries. The monthly questions are almost always inspired by something I am wrestling with, absolutely not meant to lean on anyone. I really hate answering my own question.... I don’t usually have a concise answer.

Easy. No training. All the pie.

I am 8. I don’t know if it’s maturity or a midlife crisis or some sort of unfinished unresolved era in my life but I find I desire to be the person I wanted to be when I was 8-10. It is also when my parents divorced and so much awareness of cruel and unfair and predatory behaviors were harkened into my world. I may just want to go back to a time life was “normal”, and I was on a “normal” path. Many of you know I’ve taken up the violin, that continues. I want a pair of boots. I had a pair as a 7/8 yo and loved walking on the heels, making noise. I wondered if I walked like that due to the birth defects of my hips or maybe just kidness. I played soccer, I wanna play again. I remember on laundry day, outside of the laundry mat next door was a karate class. I wanted to join. No dice. Today I found myself listening to opera, and some classical music. I think I like the opera better. I like that music. I want to ask dh to take me to a musical, or play, or something like that. When I was 9,10 in orchestra, we took a field trip to see the ft worth symphony. I wanted to play professionally. I find it curious that my 7-10 yo self is still with me.
Dh would probably claim it’s trauma, my emotional growth was impacted... maybe so. But he wanted a grey kitten like he had when he was young, when his dad was alive and they were happy. It might not be that unusual for me to regress into the things I first found a passion for. Maybe I’m just at a place where I can hear the voice of me and not kids, work, bills, stress, stress and stress.

It's too early to think about the holidays and I'm too tired for self-reflection right now, so I'll just answer the question about sports. Like @Scott6255 I have been thinking about trying downhill skiing. I think I went one time in high school, in Iowa where there are no mountains, and it didn't go well. I tried cross-country a couple of years ago but haven't dared to go for downhill. But a friend has almost convinced me to give it a shot this year. I would definitely take professional lessons.
I'm determined to do more rock climbing too and maybe expand to outdoor climbing and not just the climbing gym.6 -

I run a lot. Also, as it's summer here over Christmas, in some ways it's easier not to over eat because it's just too hot and there are always delicious salad and fresh fruit options. When it comes to the sherry trifle, however, I have a bit of a weakness, but it's one pudding on one day (and maybe breakfast on Boxing Day) so how much damage can it do?

It's interesting reading the responses so far. Yes, there's something about the innocence of childhood before things got tough, however, as sweet as those memories are, there were tough times there too but but you forget them. I had a rough time in my 20s with the illness and deaths of my mother and younger brother and as a result have blanked out a huge chunk of time. I'd like to relive my 20s and remember them, just without all the sadness. My 30s were fabulous - I had a stunning career, my own house, travelled loads, great friends - but I remember being sad at times as I was single for most of it and had awful first date after awful first date and thought I'd be alone forever and that every single man over 30 had issues. Now I'm in my 40s life is great, except for the endless laundry, and the first signs of menopause and the rest. I guess what I'm getting at is that each stage of your life has both good and bad, and it's easy to focus on one part without remembering the whole. In my head, I guess my perfect age is about 30 - young enough, old enough, plenty of energy, plenty of wisdom, plenty of time, plenty of cash...

I'm with @Elise4270, I want to try SUP. It became a thing just as I had babies and the two don't mix. However, plans have been made, but we're just waiting for the weather/water to warm up. And @Scott6255 has prompted me to think about skiing again - I haven't skied in years and am itching to get back up the mountain before I forget/get too old. Also, synchronised swimming looks like it would be a hoot...7 -

I give myself a pass four days of the holiday season. We celebrate 2 Thanksgivings (one with my parents, one with his parents) Christmas Eve with my parents, and a Feast of the Seven Fishes with my other half a few days before Christmas (on of us is usually working so most of the holidays are celebrated a few days before). I try to get a nice run in the morning of said feasts, and eat a lighter than normal breakfast. Even if I ate 3500 calories over my expenditure is for each day, that's only 4lbs in total. The rest of the season is spent within my calorie goals.

I've always loved pets. My job is nothing close to what I ever assumed I'd do growing up. And in fact I hate it. But it pays very well, has a lot of flexibility and I only put in about 1200 hours a year versus the traditional 2000 hours a 9-5 would force me to work. So the answer to this question is No. I think.
What one sport or physical activity have you always wanted to try but haven't yet? Why haven't you tried?
I used to ride horses when I was little. I'd love to get back into it but I live in a city without a car and it would be a hassle to get where I need to go for lessons. But I promised myself that one day I will. I'd love to also try out scuba diving because I love snorkeling but I ruptured an eardrum in 2010 and since then, even getting down about 10-12ft under water, I feel a lot of pressure and I can't clear it so I'm afraid I'll never be able to without putting tubes in my ears. I'd also like to learn how to row/participate in crew.
As far as October goes for running, I'm going to say 95 which is one third of the distance I have to go to hit 1000 miles for the year. With three months left, I can't fall behind any further- I'm supposed to be at 750 miles- I'm only at 714. But I will be on vacation in Europe from Oct 5-Oct 15 and I have a 15K on Oct 19 so it'll be tough some days to get my mileage in. Going to give it my best shot though.

I can't believe it too me 2 days to get here. Striking is bad for the mind sigh.
My goal, 20km per week - 80 for the month6 -
In for fifty miles again with a stretch goal of 60 and the usual disclaimer that staying uninjured is my first priority.
I have two races coming up this month, on the 5th is the Left Bank Festival 5k. Last year I won masters at this race, which is a thing not likely to happen again, but I feel obliged to defend my title! Also it was a really fun little race with a catfish festival. The week after that is the Tour d’Esprit which is a 24 hour race involving as many one mile loops as possible. My husband and I are really, really not in shape to be competitive at this event but would like to make an honorable showing. It seems like the majority of people give it six miles and call it good, while the winners go about fifty. I would like to try to make at least 14 so I can call this my half for the year. But I haven’t seen the loop and I know it’s gravel, which my knees hate. We’ll just show up and see how it works out.

I’m a type 2 diabetic, so just eating whatever I want for one day isn’t really an option for me, unless I want to spend the second half of that day extremely ill. Last year I felt like I finally had a handle on diabetes at Thanksgiving - I made sure there was a salad, made no sugar added cranberry sauce, brought a weird pie with little sugar, and ate a lot of turkey. Christmas isn’t that bad because our traditional family Christmas meal is breakfast, heavy on the eggs and bacon. The thing I miss most is Karo Pecan Pie - there’s just no way to bake dark corn syrup in a pie shell that doesn’t involve fabulous numbers of carbs - but I’m coping.
I also ran a Turkey Trot last Thanksgiving, and lifted weights on Christmas. I don’t usually eat more than the usual amount of food around the holidays, but I provide treats for myself by visiting the fancy import market and tasting exotic fruits.

Sometimes I notice that the things I enjoy today are things I have enjoyed for as long as I can remember. My husband recently got a box of his old artwork from his mom - he’s a professional video game artist today, and when he was a small child, he was creating whole books of art. Today he makes 3D models; in one of his books he drew a helicopter, and he drew it both from the front and then from the side! I, on the other hand, was writing lots of words. And I still work with words.
There was one summer when I was 12 which seemed like a huge time in my life. I can’t say I want to go back to that age - much of what happened that year was objectively awful. A close friend committed suicide. My parents were abusive. But it was also the year when I got my first kiss, and went to a house party where Steve Vai was sitting in with the band, and rode horses literally sunup to sundown. It was wild and cool, and when I look at today’s kids with their helicopter parents and remember that my parents weren’t even awake when I left the house in the morning to ride a city bus to another city, and they picked me up at night after dark, it breaks my heart a little.

I always thought modern pentathlon sounded awesome. I don’t swim well, so it’s not really a thing I would be good at, but at various times in my life I have been excellent at both show-jumping and target shooting with pistols (my dad was a international level target shooter), and I’m not a bad fencer. That leaves running which I seem to be okay at for a lady of my age. One thing that I have done in the past is archery competitions which involved running through a course, stopping at different stations, and shooting, which is similar to the combined running/pistols event of modern pentathlon in that you have to control your heart rate and recover quickly in order to shoot well. I was always unnaturally gifted at that one particular competition in archery - the other thing I’m good at is speed shooting. Anyway I don’t even know where you would have to go to find a modern pentathlon competition, I don’t imagine they are all that common, and probably there’s not a special category for over 50 beginners! But it would have been fun.

I’m hoping I’ll be back to long runs before all the carby comfort foods appear. Also, I’m not sure how much yummy food will be a big thing—we’ll be on the other coast from family, and no one in my immediate family is terribly holiday food focused (other than me!)

Hmmm. I don’t think so! I’ve had lovely things happen and really hard things each decade, so I’ve been grateful in the moment but also happy to keep moving ahead.

Ok, this will sound silly, but I think skateboarding. It just doesn’t seem like something to pick up as a (46 yo) adult, and I’d be worried about injuring myself and not being able to do other things I’d like to do. I learned snowboarding as a young adult, and some surfing a bit older than that, and given that I like both of those things, I feel like I missed an earlier skateboarding chance! I’m also super curious about triathlons, so using my foot/plantar fasciitis running pause to explore that a bit. So next new activity up, realistically: open water swimming. I only wish I’d developed this interest a few months ago, though—it was 38 degrees here this am...

It helps to live in the UK. The only big food event we have is at the end of December (no, I can't yet say the word). It'll be a few days of drinking a lot and snacks and big meals, plus a few work and social events. There's no other festivals. I've not been doing well on my diet recently, so between now and then I need to get a handle on it.

I'm living the dream RIGHT NOW. Yes, my childhood years were full of exploring the woods and bike riding, but they were also full of having my hair pulled and my fingers bent back at primary school, my granddad dying the day before my 12th birthday (my birthday always feels cursed), moving house and starting in a new town, a family friend's suicide when I was 15, socialising and drinking too much and walking home along the beach (a shingle beach which I loved back then....) at two in the morning, my uni times both good and bad, curled in a ball crying with no friends but good times and parties and looking back lately at photos of parties parties happy smiling laughing people, my 20's I headed off to Japan to teach english, then came back and didn't know where I fitted, and it's take me 10 plus years of trying to figure that out.
but the time I feel the most ME? It's now. When you are a teenager or in your 20's it's all bravado saying you don't care what people think of you, now, as I am about to turn 44 tomorrow, I REALLY don't care what people think of me and it's liberating. So maybe I wanted kids, but it hasn't happened so move on next chapter. I've got a good education, I've worked up into a position of responsibility at work and am respected in my career. And I'm constantly trying new things. And going out having adventures. Adventures can be whatever you want.

So we have something called MoveGB which is like a cross-sport gym membership. It means I can try pretty much any activity I want. Lately I've been doing Stand-up paddleboarding (will leave that aside as a summer hobby), along the harbour which has been great and I've met good friends through it.
I want to get back into rock-climbing so am going to do some indoor climbing over the winter.
I've yet to find the sport I'm good at, and have to remind myself that it should be more about doing things that are fun rather than just be good at something. Things I want to try -
skiing (I've had one lesson, and was okay at it)
boxing - this is a tricky one, because I hate, hate, hate the whole concept, but I can see how it's a really good discipline from a fitness point of view
parkour - because who doesn't want to leap over buildings????? In my head I'm an agile mountain goat.
I plan to do more yoga (Yin yoga is a really good one for runners, and if you don't have time for a class then yoga with Adrienne on Youtube is brilliant), more hiking and more fun stuff.9 -

Yes, he would, but at 18 or 20 (pending on his maturity) he would be able to take care of himself and carry on. *shrugs* it is probably silly, but it makes sense to me.3 -

This is a good point. I have serval food issues (including blood sugar) that will moderate the "eat all the things" answer I gave. Also, I have found as I age that stuffing my belly to the max is a far less pleasant experience than it sounds.

My Oct runs will be cut back to running 30 min every other day in order to eliminate plantar fasciitis. I plan on adding strength training on my off days, maybe some cross training.... Mileage is a guess, I'm hoping I can start adding more mileage - we'll see what my foot says....

Well now I wanna skateboard, rock climb, no sky diving... sorry just falling? I can do that from the ground. We don’t have the stand up paddle boarding here, I saw it in Hawaii, I think I’d like it.I wouldn’t mind scuba although I find the older I get the more I experience anxiety with my face in a mask. Happened at fire school in the scba too and even a bit at the Y pool. I tried the rock climbing wall on a cruise ship, but I was just to fat to pull my self up. Maybe I can work on that. I want to add a pull up bar that I can toss a jump rope over to do squats when my hip is better. Maybe I’ll get strong enough to wall climb.
I have inline skates. Maybe I’ll get to use them.
@girlinahat haha! Ya it’s just holidays to me too. I’ll go on a rant about the commercialization of ..... just lots of food which is easy to embrace here with it being cold and football is on and dh buys logs for the fireplace... @rheddmobile I think one November I ate 4 of those Karo pecan pies, ok 6. They are no on my no-no list, a list of abused foods I can’t have responsibility.

Upper 60s F and humid today. Thought yesterday's real rest day would help my legs feel strong, but they felt wooden instead. Plus, I picked up a pain in my left foot during the night. Don't know what caused it, but it wasn't enough to stop the run. Eventually felt better, so it might be just a bruise from stepping on a hickory nut during Sunday's run. Who knows where old people's pain comes from?
I'll have to do a little thinking on this month's questions...

Wow questions.
Ok, first: food and the holidays. We don't have Thanksgiving here in Spain so that's one I don't have to worry about. Christmas (yuck, I said it) here includes dinner with the inlaws on the 24th, which is interesing as I'm vegetarian and my mother in law can't cope so makes me cook and take my own dinner, while she cooks lamb for everyone else. I usually end up making a quiche or something and pigging out on cheese and crisps and junk. Last year I was injured and unable to run, so I went hungry and was miserable. This year I intend to do a VERY long run that morning and then stuff my face with crap. Christmas day we usually have to go back and eat the leftovers from the night before. I expect another run will be needed for that. My birthday is New Year's Day so we usually eat out. Oh well, calories don't count on birthdays, right?
Second: age. Like @girlinahat I'm currently at the DILLIGAF point in life, maybe it's something about early 40s. I feel younger and happier than I had since early childhood because I refuse to take *kitten* sitting down anymore and have stopped caring what people think about me and started doing/being what I want to do/be. Still not 100% what I want to be, but I'm learning.
Third: sport. Like someone else said, I did a lot of horseriding when I was young but then went chicken. Now my daughter is taking lessons and I spend the whole time worrying she'll fall off. So as much as I would like to get back into that I don't think I'm brave enough. Another thing I've always wanted to do is boxing, but I have a feeling if I got into that my husband would end up severely injured or worse (see answer to previous question LOL).

Welcome to October! I’m not on the running board yet, but I did sign up for three more races! I was already planning on doing the Turkey Trot 10K and the Reindeer Run 10K, then I got an email that reminded me that there’s also a Halloween race in the same series and doing all three gets you a special medal holder. Since I don’t see myself necessarily wanting to to the Turkey Trot again, it seemed like I might as well go for it this year.
Seeing as I’m set to run more miles this month than all year, I’m also upping my lifting to try and hit three classes a week. We’ve got a max week planned at the end of the month, the fourth since I started at the gym, and I’ve had to skip the last two due to not having attended enough classes. This month I want to bust that 200 lb deadlift PR wide open!
Monthly questions:
1) I don’t really do holidays, so I don’t really stress out about it. We don't have kids or live in a good trick-or-treating neighborhood, so we don't have a lot of Halloween candy around (I don't have much of a sweet tooth anyhow). I usually do a fairly quiet Thanksgiving dinner with my mom and husband, nothing to get worked up about. I work from home so there’s no extra office food to worry about, and other than my mom, all our family lives out of town. Sometimes we visit my in-laws for Christmas but they’re not huge food people so again, not a big deal. My issues with food is about the day-to-day, not a few weeks out of the year.
2) I’m 36 and I like the age I’m at right now. Every decade since my teens I’ve gone through cycles where the early part of the decade sucks, the middle gets better, and the end is pretty great. Right now I’m in the middle of my 30s and things have definitely been on an upward trend, so here's hoping that continues.
3) Ever since I learned it existed (probably when Casino Royale came out) I’ve thought it would be cool to try parkour, but first I was in terrible shape, then I got my endurance up but had weak noodle arms, and now I’ve been working on my noodle arms so maybe I’m in a good place to give it a shot this winter! ETA: Since people always ask about parkour when I've mentioned it before, basically it is navigating obstacles on a course as quickly as possible only using your body. Lots of jumping, vaulting, rolling, etc. It's gotten popular in action movies since Casino Royal - the guy in the clip I linked who isn't Daniel Craig is one of the early developers of parkour.

Parkour could be fun, it really does look like it, but not until I get farther along in my anti-t-rex plan I think.

October goal: 100 miles

Today's run was really good. I planned to run the first mile as a warm up and the next 3 as negative splits and then the last mile as a cool down. And I was able to accomplish my goal! I ran miles 2-4 in under 10 min/mile which is what I want to do on Saturday for my 5K race. I did get a little carried away and kept going after mile 5 but I made myself stop and go home and get ready for work. I really did want to keep running even though it was hot and there are still no signs of fall, it was 77°F, Feels like 78°F, Humidity 81%, Dew point 70°F. One of my weather apps said the feels like was 83°F. It definitely did not feel like October, but it was still a great run! Last week I felt so slow and discouraged, but today I felt like I'll be able to do well in my race on Saturday after all. I am really just hoping to run it in under 30 minutes, and since my 5K PR is 29:47 I should be able to get a PR if I can stay under 30 minutes. Either way I just want to run well and feel good about it. I know that not every race will be a PR. If I run like I did today then I'll feel good. If I run like I did last week then I'll probably be disappointed.

What is your approach to the upcoming holidays and abundance of food? How will it affect or effect your training or goals?
My plan is to do what I did last year. For the most part, things don't change. I still meal prep like normal and just don't prepare anything for the actual days of the holiday. I don't tend to gorge myself, so I just eat what I want then get back to normal. Actually lost weight during the holidays last year. The goal this year is just maintennce. I also don't prep when I'm traveling so my outdoor climbing trip after Christmas is just trail food. High energy, low preparation stuff.
How old are you? Not chronologically. Is there an age where you knew who you wanted to be and have found that you’ve held tight to it, or perhaps comeback to it years later? What things have always interested you?
I am 39, chronologically and otherwise. I never get too caught up in the number and I generally feel happy with whatever age I am. I don't look back and wish to be younger. I'm living in the now.
What one sport or physical activity have you always wanted to try but haven't yet? Why haven't you tried?
I would try more water sports like kayaking and SUP I guess. In calm waters. I have a fear of falling or jumping into water over my head, so no white water for me and definitely a life jacket. But I love the water and those seem fun. I also want to skydive but my husband won't. My daughter is interested but too young, so maybe for her 18th!

There are no Turkey Trots in my town, but I'll try to get a nice run in on Thanksgiving and then I'll just enjoy all the food. It is just one day and there are lots of foods that I only eat at the holidays. Christmas isn't as big of a food holiday, but there will still be plenty of treats and I'll enjoy them too. I probably won't run on Christmas day, but I'll try to stay active in the days before and after so I'm not going to stress about it. We don't have a lot of holiday parties and I work in a very small office and we don't have holiday food out so that's never a problem for me. And we never get trick or treaters and our kids are grown, so I probably won't even buy any Halloween candy this year.

What things have always interested you? This is a tough one. I don't know how old I am. I don't feel as old as I am chronologically. Or maybe I just don't think that 51 is old any more. I don't know if I've ever really known who I wanted to be. And while there have been good and bad things about all ages, I am enjoying my 50's so far. Most of my life I have put other's needs ahead of my own and now I am starting to care about myself more and care a little less about what others think. (Although worrying about what others think will probably always be a bit of a struggle for me.)
What one sport or physical activity have you always wanted to try but haven't yet? Why haven't you tried? I don't know if there is one sport I've never tried that I want to try. I would like to do more hiking, but that would require travel. I guess I would like to zip-line. I am extremely terrified of heights. I have no desire to ever skydive or bungee jump and I'm not sure I could do either even if someone literally paid me thousands of dollars. But I think I could zip-line. Maybe.2
