@PastorVincent sorry you had to miss your race but it certainly sounds like the right call.
@RandJ6280 that 20 degree rule of thumb is a pretty good start but wind plays a huge factor, particularly below freezing. Different people tolerate the cold differently as well. I'll put a long sleeve shirt on at 40F and light tights on around 30F. Buff around my ears and very light gloves about 40F to start, then they will come off as I warm up. Strong winds will change those numbers.
I was going to run 4 today but family are in town and we were out late. I decided sleep was more important than running so slept in until 9am. Tonight's challenge is to break away from the group around 10pm. My alarm will be set for 4:15am tomorrow.9 -

I’ve heard the 20 degree rule. For a while I had it tweaked, like +20 +10 if it’s dry and sunny, +20-10 if it’s overcast... etc.
Everyone is different. I see this one woman still “bundled up” at 70f, I’d die of a heat stroke. @mobycarb ran in shorts an a singlet in the 50’s routinely. My dh went to the Tm yesterday because it was 50f outside. For me, 50 is perfect for shorts and a t, or a light long sleeved or tank, depending on the cloud cover and duration of the run. I had one run in the 30’s I pealed my shirt off because it was so sunny and warm. The temps prob crept up and I was probs over dressed.
For me, Best to do a few warm up laps/miles near home or where you run from, car, then shed a few layers and hang on to a pair of gloves. I also kept a log of the temps and what I wore and how it worked for reference.
No running here so for me it’s “don’t i need a new jacket?” weather. After all, everything I have is for running. What’d @karllundy call it? Retail therapy? Ya, sounds awesome, except I’ve gained non-runner weight and lost runner muscle... hahaha!6 -
Run time weather was 62 degrees, WONDERFUL.... I see in the forecast this week could get down close to mid 40's.

An appropriately timed question, as my runs earlier this week were in mid to high 50s and now I'm preparing to go out in 33 feels like 22. On the advice of one of the fine winter runners here, I started a spreadsheet last year where I tracked what I wore on my runs by temperature and made comments for future reference, such as today!
I can wear shorts in pretty cold weather - last year I recorded runs in shorts down to the high 30s, but I paired that with a merino running skirt (I call it my butt coat) because my tush gets cold much easier than the rest of me. I can do short sleeves into the 40s but since I usually run around lakes, wind is always a factor in the winter so I usually start wearing a thin windbreaker in the low 50s or high 40s. My race last weekend was in the mid to high 40s and I didn't wear the windbreaker but I did wear arm sleeves, which are probably my favorite piece of gear for when I'm not sure how much warmth I'm going to need. I ended up rolling them up but not taking them off.4 -

So, my body and comfort levels have changed over the last four years. I used to be able to wear my compression shorts and tank top down to 47 °F. After that, I wore my compression leggings and long sleeve shirt to about 35°F or so. Below 32°F, I had my running jacket on. If windy my cap would be on. Below 25°F, I would have second layer of leggings and my balaclava.
As of this year. my tolerance level is changing and not for the better. I am very cold after we drop past 70°F.
70 and up compression shorts and tank top
65-55 long sleeve shirt, compression shorts (really depends on north or south winds)
55-45 long sleeve shirt, compression leggings
45-32 long sleeve shirt (thickness change), compression leggings, cap, gloves
32 and lower will probably be two pairs pants, long sleeve shirt, jacket, balaclava/hat, warming (electric) gloves.

This morning, while superhumans were doing amazing stuff, I did my 2nd longest run (well run-walk-run) ever. 11 miles. And it took me over 25 minutes more than it took Kipchoge to run a marathon. Damn, I suck. But you know what? I wasn't properly fuelled or rested, my earphones died 3 miles in and it was muggy and drizzling and I wasn't dressed right, but I still did it. That's enough for me today. If anyone needs me I'll be on the floor in front of the fridge...22

14 miles for me today. The weather was absolutely perfect for running this morning. I actually waited several hours for it to warm up! Started out at around 49F, zero wind. Ended at 54F, 5mph wind. Just wore shorts and short sleeve tech shirt, left the gloves at home.
Pace felt easy most of the time. Felt like tempo pace a few times, but overall was a very good run.

I'm the "disagree" because you absolutely don't suck. I heard someone (Kipchoge's coach maybe???) explain the "no human is limited" to mean that no matter where we are, we can always "level up". Your 2nd longest distance covered on foot at one time sure sounds like you're doing just that.15 -

Thanks 😁 it was said pretty tongue in cheek, for a long time I fretted over being a slow runner and various other comparisons. Now I understand I'm only competing against my former self and I'm also learning to accept that what matters is showing up and doing your best.8 -

Longest run in 5yrs. I had been struggling a little with going from 5k to 10k. So I have decided to go back to run/walk intervals, felt much better at the end of todays 8k than last weeks 7k.
Goal for October:
1. 15runs.......6
2. 80km.........33km
3. 8km long...Done 12 Oct
4. PB 5km......Done 5 Oct

Just got home from my training run. It is my new longest run ever at 5.04 miles. Each Saturday run on the training schedule gets a tiny bit longer with the race scheduled for Nov 2. I’m really enjoying this workshop/training program so far. The coaches are very supportive. They offer it again in the Spring. So I might join again. Feels like a good value at $40 for a 10 week program.
In other news, Thursday night I met with another group in town and did my first trail run. I discovered that I don’t like trail running. I struggled halfway through with some anxiety not knowing what to expect next and just wanted the run to end. A lovely run/walker reached me and asked if I needed to rest. I explained my anxiety. Then she stayed with me the rest of the way and assured me I would be ok. I was so happy to reach the end and know it was over. On my way home I resolved never to do it again. Now after having a good night sleep and time to reflect, I’ll probably go again this week. I don’t always do new things well and I think the anxiety was from not expecting the swampy parts, high grass and narrow paths in some areas. Now that I’ve experienced it once it might be easier next time. I might need to run trails a couple more times before absolutely deciding to hate it.20 -

My husband and I usually walk new trails once before running them, so we know what to expect. If you can’t do this, it helps to slow way down! Don’t let faster, more nimble people push you into going faster than you feel comfortable with. It also helps to have good trail shoes and something to put over your car seats on the way home.
Trails are great for learning to move in all directions and give your legs a break from repetitive motion. Plus you get to see deer, birds, and beautiful wilderness. I hope you eventually decide you love them!

I had a good night's sleep after my allergy experience yesterday - a boatload of Benadryl definitely helped with that. I went out and did a pretty short "long run" this morning - one week out from my double half marathon weekend. It felt good. I'm starting to feel more rested with the tapering and my legs seemed pretty fresh. The temps were great at 47 degrees to start. Relative to the discussion I wore capris today an a long sleeve shirt that I thought I would take off at some point but never did. I also wore gloves for the first while, my hands get really cold and I have mild Reynaud's as well.
After the run, we had a walk for suicide prevention in the same park. One of our running friends lost his son to suicide a few weeks ago just before he was due to leave for his freshman year of college. It is so sad to hear him talk about how he doesn't understand why and his son never reached out for help. It's so important to make it okay to talk about struggling. I know I had more than a few thoughts about suicide the year after I lost my sister. I didn't tell anyone other than my grief counselor, but even that was so hard.

Race day! I did my first 10 mile race today. It unintentionally ended up not being that different from my training run pace. My GPS was acting up and it threw everything off. I was trying not to get caught up in the sprinting at the beginning so when I checked my watch and I was going too fast, I backed off. By the end when I was getting tired my pace naturally slowed down even more and I ended up quite a bit slower than I was hoping for. I have to get my GPS issues fixed.
On the upside, the weather was cool and I dressed perfectly! It was 52F at race time and I wore compression shorts and a well vented long sleeved wool blend shirt. Also, the race is impeccably organized and about 15 minutes from my house. Definitely will do it again!

My October goal was 1 indoor and 1 outdoor run each week. Today I ran my third run of the week! Woo hoo! Another couple miles under my belt! It was amazing!9

I ran 3 miles with the dogs this morning. It was right around freezing again, which for me means tights, a thicker long sleeve top, gloves and two buffs - one for my ears and one for my face. I bought some new buffs on Amazon this past week and some of them are so slippery, one wouldn't stay up to cover my nose or cheeks very well and my face was red from the cold when I finished. Still a good run!10
