Thanks all for the birthday wishes! No run today as I had to take our elderly friend for her tests and doctor appts. I have strength training in a bit and then out to dinner with DH! I will get my birthday run in tomorrow but I guarantee that it will not be 64 miles. It will be a meager 6.4 😊
@loveychar - I was 57 when I started running. I hated it before back to when I was a kid and never expected to keep running and still be running 7 years later! I hope to run as long as I can, even if it means doing a slow shuffle! At least I will be moving!
@dreamer12151 I will be cheering for the Pack too on the 15th and hoping you get your birthday present!!
Go Pack Go!
@durhammfp - in addition to what everyone else has said already I would take a couple of runs just to go out and run. No app, no plan, no pressure. Just run and enjoy the feeling of running for however long you feel like doing it. I listen to music, sing along with the songs, watch the hawks and other critters and just enjoy being outside. Other times I am focused on whatever the plan has on the schedule for me. You might even find that you end up running longer, further and/or faster without even thinking about it. You can also plan a day of having fun with a little speed work or some intervals just to mix it up. Note also there is an entire type of running built around doing run/walk intervals. You can check it out here. I tried it for a while and didn't care too much for the constant starting and stopping but some people love it. I do however plan walk breaks in my HMs - typically at every water station or every couple of miles or something like that. I am sure they are all different but I think most of the Fleet Feet stores have group runs for all levels and lots of fun runs that you could participate in just to do something different once in a while.7 -
Thanks again EVERYONE for all the birthday wishes 😊
No run today. Going out to dinner (we only go out to eat about 3-4 a year!), so I am planning on eating all. the. food.12 -

Tonight I decided to do 2 treadmill miles. I walked 3 min to warm up then began the 2 miles by running 3 min at 4mph then from there on out I sped up to 5mph for 1 min out of every 3. Then 2 min cool down walk.
Dec 1 - No run, no anything
Dec 2 - 30 min walk with dh/28 min 2 mile RUN on treadmill which was 1.5 mile at 4mph and then I sped up to 5 and 6mph for the last half mile because I thought I was never going to finish going 4mph
Dec 3 - short dog walks and some other walking then 5k RUN outside which took me 33:06 (there is a huge disparity in my outdoor running speed and my comfort level on the treadmill)
Dec 4 - took a 6000 steps walk while on the clock
Dec 5 - 2 mile RUN on treadmill

@eleanorhawkins I'm glad to see I'm not the only Jeff Galloway method fan on here. That's what I have been doing. I don't think I would be able to do the long runs otherwise. When I first started running about 11 years ago, my first goal was to run 30 minutes without stopping, because I thought that was what you were "supposed" to do. I did manage to get up to running 6 miles without stopping and it felt great. But, then I didn't keep it up. Maybe because I felt I had reached my limit. I don't know. Then I got injured playing tennis and had to do nothing for a couple of years. This go-around I am doing the Jeff Galloway training and think I can keep it up and go further and further and faster and faster - for the foreseeable future anyway. And, I'm not dying at the end of my long runs. In fact, I usually feel more energized. So, @durhammfp , as others have said, this is something you may want to give a try and see how it goes. If you don't like it, try something else until you find what works for you.6

40 minute tempo run late last night. Work kicked my *kitten* yesterday, and it took me forever to get out the door, even though I knew for a fact I'd feel better post run. Funny things our brains are.
Anyway I think I might've gotten too excited, and the ten minute part that was supposed to be 10k pace ended up being more than 5k pace. Feeling rather sore this morning. I'll call that a good workout.
@PastorVincent I didn't know the app could do that for a long time either. Had no idea what people were talking about when they complained about how they just wrote a very long post just to hit "done".
Happy Birthday @shanaber and @scott6255!
@durhammfp Taking walk breaks during long runs is a totally normal and viable thing to do if it helps. Think of it this way - most people are obliged to wait at traffic lights or crossings anyway.4 -
@shanaber and @Scott6255 Happy birthday to both of you!
10k at WC Johnson on trails. I do have a second cold, just when I had gotten over my last cold. According to my mom everyone she knows is sick, and it seems like every time I venture out in public someone coughs or sneezes right on me! We went to see Knives Out (which I recommend) and a lady behind us sounded like she had tuberculosis or something. I wish people here would wear face masks when they have to be sick in public, like people in Japan.
Anyway I’m a little tired and my nose is stuffy, not too bad, better than yesterday, but it seems like when I have a mild illness my body is unusually stubborn about getting started running. Today felt impossibly hard up until mile 6 when suddenly it felt like I could run fast forever. I guess my body is trying to tell me to go back to bed, then finally gives up and decides if I’m still going I must be running from a cougar or something, so it will let me do that first. When I finally do get going I feel much better afterwards.
It was a pretty day to run, just about 60 and cloudy. We ran beside a large buck for a while, and heard a great horned owl.9 -
@shanaber & @Scott6255 Happy birthday! I hope it is an amazing day and I don't personally know you but I'm 43 and I've only been running for 4 years!!! You give me hope and inspire me to do it until I'm 80!!! When I'm out running, there's this elderly man probably in his 80's. He's super skinny and never wears a shirt and when we cross paths he always says "nice pace." I have this feeling/instinct that tells me he was a former runner turned speed walker as age has slowed him down but not stopped him. I just want to hug him because he inspires me just by being there and with those simple words. Happy happy birthday! Enjoy it and if you eat some cake, I'd love to hear a full description of it! I'm envisioning it...Flourless dark chocolate cake with a toasted marshmallow and hazelnuts! YUM!! My favorite all time dessert.8

Ugh... have to remember not to run so soon after dinner. Not a good run. 😩. Pushed through to keep on track...

Remembered my run halfway through eating chocolate yesterday evening straight after a large bowl of pasta. Had to go there and then or not go at all.
So a post dinnner/post choc, late, cold, windy, miserable run. Thought I might throw up at one point. Old me would have given it up but new me carried on at a slow pace. 5k done.
December goals:
1. Distance ..........110k................22k
2. Runs.................16....................3
3. Long distance..13k..................12k
4. Other ...............10k/1walk.......3

Hi All, I am new to this site, within the last month or so. I am currently exercising predominantly on a treadmill or spin bike. While on the treadmill I am mostly walking with some short, light jogs mixed in, sort of a modified c25k program. I have a lot of weight to lose and do not want to injure my knees or ankles moving to fast. My goal for this month will be fifty miles. Thank you for listening to me and good luck to everyone with their goals.

Today I found that tiredness I didn't have yesterday. Fortunately the plan said "easy 5k". Oh, and today there were NO signs in the woods, BUT shortly after starting down the path, I realized loggers were in fact just ahead of me cutting down trees. I just turned around and went a different way, skipping the woods altogether. I don't need to waste mental energy trying to figure out where they are working.
December goal 100 miles

Motivation, sigh.
I finished my C25K app pretty well.
I immediately started the bridge to 10K app, and went through the first 2 weeks OK, and then, I don't know what happened, but I have lost most of my motivation to continue. I was on a run on Thanksgiving morning that was supposed to be 40 minutes long. I finished it and felt great.
But when I was out on my last 45 minute run, it just seemed impossibly long from the very first step and my brain kept on asking me why I was even bothering with it so I quit after about 25 minutes. I had never done that before, I mean just quit a run completely.
How do you get your motivation back when it is waning?
ETA: I do find running longer-for-me distances more fatiguing and have insisted on never taking walk breaks. Maybe I should just take a walk break in the middle of a 45 minute run. OTOH, I did not have to do that with a 40 minute run.
@durhammfp Ok, I have taken out a couple of lines of emotion so lets focus on what is left of the post as this is exactly where I was in in July.
You did run/walk to 5k until you could do it no intervals.
You now want to get to 10k no intervals. But are breaking down and losing motivation.
I did this too. I assumed because I could do 5k no interval I would just keep adding distance. I broke down amd lost motivation because I was breaking down.
If you are increasing intervals and distance at the same time you are not properly focussing on one thing and missing out on both
I got out of this by focussing on the distance amd going back to intervals. I increased distance as usual but kept a low interval rate much less than what it would take to run 5k.
When you get to 10k distance you can then go back to increasing intervals.
My long run is 12k - I take 3 walk breaks so at about 3.5k/7k/10.5k and I've been able to do 5k without stopping since June.

News shoes! The old ones have umm let's go with “way more” miles than any expert or sensible person would suggest is reasonable 🤪. Hopefully, these fit as I will be running in the soon. I have yet to try them on really. There were a cyber Monday steal at $48. 🎉

I ran last night. 2 miles with speed demon. she is still anxious about starting running but she does alright when we get moving. hopefully she'll be ok on saturday with our trail race. i'm considering using the slide halter instead of the one i'm using so she can't back out of it.
it felt fast. it was fast this time. i was heavy footed and it twinged my shins a bit. nothing major. i'm still stiff from aerial yoga.

Started my new shoes Dec 1 and 2, so hopefully will get 3 months from these.8 -
@mbaker566 - I have those same shoes! don't run in them though, I got them just for walking. They have too much cushion for me to run in but I love the wide toe box! I wondered if Speed Demon ran in her cute pink jammies. Clearly she is a very stylish runner1
-
@PastorVincent and @mbaker566 Nice shoes. Love Speed Demon too! (The dog. Not you Pastor Vincent! )
I have my first race in over 4 years tomorrow. It's a 5K to benefit a local charity that is providing emergency housing (they have built an actual house) for children that are taken out of their homes and awaiting a foster family to take them in. That way, they won't have to spend the night in the police department or DCS office. My goal is to run as I have trained, meaning actually do the Jeff Galloway run/walk method. I've been training by running 4 minutes, walking one, then repeat. When I did the virtual race in July, I did NOT follow my plan and it wasn't pretty. Hopefully following the plan will make the race a lot easier and maybe even faster. Who knows? I'll let you know how it goes.7 -
Good luck with your race tomorrow @quilteryoyo. Run like you trained, and you'll do great!! 💪😀2
