WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2020

I usually take our Christmas decorations down when hubby is off skiing so he's not under foot so they came down on the 2nd. I liked the top he got me for Christmas so much that we went to Kohls today and I got another one. I'm still working on replacing my too big clothes but I still have to wear some of the baggy ones. One step at a time.

And France is particularly known for being excessive in paperwork. The legal case(s) really bogged me down, as has the thesis work. I don't have that many momenos at all, and they don't bother me as they are tucked away and don't need to be revisited unless I want to. In legal cases lots needs to be kept just in case. But if I can toss half, I still need to go through it to toss half. If I had known I'd have legal issues I'd never have started the thesis I guess - I mean legal issues that came up in 2015 were lightyears from my thoughts in 2013. Managing both is almost impossible. And I'm also involved in some union stuff (more paper), though I've opted out from any official position till end of 2020, if not forever. I also have 2 tiny rental "student studettes" (they are bought on credit and the rent pays the mortgage till I'm 62 and 65.). Thank goodness they are going well, and I'm used to running them. They go quite smoothly for the most part (sometimes things to repair and damage issues to sort out but I get a good deposit and good co-signers and just follow the law which is pretty specific on all fronts. It takes times but doesn't confuse me much. I usually don't explain all the above since over busy-ness (or excess of paper) is common and tedious. Good idea to do some while watching videos or TV. Some takes some focus and some not so much. Some of it stresses me out, since some of it reminds me of stressful legal issues. Nice to read that the meditarian diet is still number one. It's not that hard to follow.
A lot of my paperwork comes from years and years in school. I've got 2 bachelor degrees, 2 year-long certificates, 1 diploma, 1 grad certificate, 1 grad diploma, and now I'm most of the way through a masters. I've kept most of the course notes etc. from all of that and also all the little courses I've taken in between (French, Spanish, numerous computer courses of various sorts, photography, etc.).
In addition to that there's the paperwork involved in moving to a different country and becoming a citizen ... there's a mountain of that!
Plus boxes of paperwork for the area of cycling I've been involved in (audax/randonneuring) because I've not only participated in a lot of events, I've also been involved in organising events since about 2006 or so.
And souvenir paperwork ... because I cycled around Australia for 3 months in 2004 and then my husband and I took 8 months to cycle/travel around the world in 2012, plus all our shorter trips (3 weeks here, a month there, etc.), I've ended up collecting brochures and this and that from everywhere. I would usually mail it "home" with the intention of putting it all together into some sort of souvenir scrapbook, but as usual life takes over very quickly and that has not happened.
Then my husband's accident has resulted in at least one file box full of paper.
Right now, all of this and whatever else there is is pretty much divided into file boxes. I found that the easiest way to deal with it for the time being and having everything related to one category in one file box makes it a little bit easier to find something when I go digging.
Eventually I will have to go through it all and decide what I really need to keep.

Lanette-good memory-yes I have two cats to factor in. My SIL stops in every couple of days when I am out of town. Don't know how they would take to a move. They are used to going outside here (although not as much as they are getting older). Don't think they would take to the heat well (although one of them came to me from Tucson when kids moved to England for military). They may also find the scorpions interesting , , ,
Carol-sorry about your dog. Just enjoy the time you have with him.
Funeral lunch at church went well. Since the deceased was 95 there were many older people there on walkers, canes, and in wheel chairs. We served quite a few meals to them at the table instead of the walking through the line. He was a long time member of the church. He just started getting tired the last couple of years. Recently broke an ankle that was not healing and was looking at no further mobility. He just decided he was done and chose to stop eating. He was able to pass with dignity and on his own terms with his family with him.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Son and lady friend coming over tomorrow. Going to have lunch and watch a football game.

"Todo"s and "done"done invest 10 mins cleaning guest room, another 10 mins cleaning office, Shadow to dog group, Purely Voice Twelfth Night.
Bonus: laptop setup continued.
to do: invest 10 mins (including dusting) cleaning LR, church, veg prep, call Carolyn, look at 20 for 20, what can you do and when?
Lisa and Katla sending good vibes that the specialists have good answers.
Tekavincent et al, yes much better, thanks. Those therapeutic massages make me sore for awhile, but the next day whatever was the problem is gone or much less. Today my right leg behaved itself and felt 90% more reliable and pain free. Feeling confident I’ll be able to do most if not all the BB&B exercises Monday.
Pip Very scary and dangerous to be riding on the road without headlight. So glad you were well lit up. Might invest in a small, wearable, headlamp to keep in your bag to strap on handlebars next time. Forgive my dark sense of humor but “we call them organ donors” made me snort!
Welcome 2020goLizgo, you’ll find the gals here compassionate, wise and friendly.
Oh Carol! What a hard start to the new year. ((hugs))
Julie, it was not a bummer to not be able to dance, and partly pleasant, partly uncomfortable. People were so kind and concerned, I was grateful but wanted to disappear. Guess my mix of extra/introvert can cope with dancing in a group better than just hanging out…
Lanette rainy walk, decluttering and SWSY? Well done!
Margaret taking your friend out to where she wanted to eat was a great kindness. You were blessed in return seeing her doing so well after her horrible accident. Some might not think walking in a walker was doing so well, but when that person was so recently near death, it looks really really good.
Karen in VA great gift card story!
Michele I’m sure you will do your weekly yoga too! You are one determined gal.
Rori smiling at all the little good things the day brought you.
Amber “stinky good time” hahahahaha
Shirley if I found a top I liked, I’d buy one in every color / pattern they had
Ginny “find scorpions interesting” that’s it. I’ve lost all interest in Arizona. Thanks!
Welcome pam ( @ple79 ), If you want to target an individual in a reply you can quote their post. If you preface their id with an @ it will notify them of your post.

Ginny that is quite a coincidence! It was abnormally cold here during Christmas. Today and the next few days will be in the 70’s. We rent our house and cabin out year round. We’re building an RV site on our property in Minnesota this spring, then we won’t have to spend money at a resort. We live in a resort town right on two major bike trails that we could ride all across the state on. This summer we are thinking of traveling from city to city and vacationing along the bike trail.
Mary from Arizona/ Minnesota6 -
Michele - I totally spoil my kids for Christmas and their spouses. I spend about 100 on each of them and also fill stockings. For the Grandkids I want to be able to do for any others that come along so I normally do 1 outfit, 1 ornament, 1 book, 1 toy and pyjamas. We also fill a stocking for the Grands.
I was very fortunate to have grandparents that did for me growing up and even as an adult so I pay it forward and remember their kindness by doing for my children and grandchildren. I expect nothing in return, I do it for me. I can’t imagine not doing it.6 -
Hi. I am 63. I'm British and live in Southern Spain. I have steadily lost about 20kgs with MFP over the years, I waver between 75kgs and 78kgs and never seem able to get below that 75. I now have a bad back problem (from 40 years of nursing and 5 of big boat sailing, I suspect).
I am determined to get down to 70kgs for the sake of my back. I usually achieve weight loss through low carb dieting. Just embarking on one week of ultra low carb, to get going. Exercise is currently difficult because of my back, but I love walking in the lovely countryside here. I'm planning to check out whether cycling is pain free when I can find a bike to borrow.

@1948Peachy I'm so sorry about your Pom
@Machka9 years of school, becoming a citizen in a different country, I'm there. it sounds like you are somewhat organised, more than I am at present. your beach is so beautiful!
@ginnytez that Is so sad, but good that he went on his own terms
@pie79 you did it! Welcome!
@auntiebk I can relate about being intro/extravert. I'm somewhat in the middle, slightly more introvert I think. I used to dance lots at parties in college, partly cause I didn't feel like speaking that much. Great job on cleaning.
Off to a slow start today. I need to return the bad computer I bought. I tossed the box unwisely so I know it's gonna be more of a fuss to bring it bad. Customer service here is laughably not good. The opposite of USA customer service. Need to have breakfast, go to gym and computer repair place or visa versa. Meeting a neighbour new friend-acquaintance for coffee at 4:30. it's been hermit-like with all the transport strikes. hard to meet people these holidays and I couldn't go away easily- plus I had all the legal gunk to deal with.
Here is a balanced video that talks about it from 3min28 to 5:30. It's very accurate. It's by a francofile person so rather fair. The most common answer is "no it's not possible". And then you hang around and you may or may get satisfaction. If you are francofile you might like this. Though not particularly this video. she talks about what she loves about France in another video, or French management style, or how to swear in France, or what not to wear in France, or French beauty secrets, etc, etc ec.
I checked online and this is a major chain and it says with no box its exchange or credit not reimbursement. Fine. Let's see how it works. I'm apprehensive. this is no LL bean or eastern mountain sports (good on exchange policies).

Morning ladies, I'm up early as usual enjoying my first cup of coffee, what a delight. Lots of cleaning up and errands from the holiday to complete today. Laundry, cleaning and grocery shopping. Also Rachel needs to have her phone repaired, what a rabbit hole that may be!
We will go back to work tomorrow, wow, that's the first time I thought about that for 2 entire weeks! Unplugging the past 2 weeks has been very good for all of us, DH and I are more in sync and the 3 of us have had time to enjoy each other, feeling grateful for my little family
"mindful" is my word this year and it includes staying on the path I've set up that includes morning journaling, keeping track of to dos with my post it note method and weekly index card . This keeps me on the straight and narrow and takes away a lot of the stress and muddle. I am becoming more aware of my actions as they relate to dealing with anxiety, I often medicate with food and sedentary behaviors to decompress. I plan on recognizing this and choosing differently or at least examine potential choices I have that don't have to mean mindlessly reaching for comfort food and the remote control!
Carol lots of love and strength coming your way, ((( )))

Home from holidays
AND
Uni Assignment 2 done!
Ready to go back to work tomorrow ... sort of. Meh. I would happily take another week or two off. However 16 days off was very welcome!
In addition to finishing Assignment 2, today I also exercised ...
Walk/Run:
Distance: 3.87km
Elevation: 46m
Moving Time: 39:48
Elapsed Time: 42:58
Pace: 10:16/km
I ran for 2 km in the middle ... you can see where on this Strava graph. I'm trying to build up to a 5 km run again ... that's a nice distance for a once or twice a week lunch run.
Cycling
Distance: 10.15km
Elevation: 75m
Moving Time: 38:19
Elapsed Time: 41:57
Speed: Avg: 15.9km/h | Max: 30.6km/h
And speaking of lunch runs, I need to reclaim my lunches!! Since my husband's accident, lunches have been so busy running errands, attending appointments, etc. etc. etc. When I'm riding in on the bus, I think that "today" would be a good day to jog to the Botanical Gardens or something, but an hour later, I realise I've got to pick up this and go there and do that. Weeks go past and I suddenly realise it has been several months since I've been to the Botanical Gardens. I need to claim a couple lunches each week for ME!!

Hello lovely ladies.
The New Year is off to a swift start for me. I am extremely busy at work closing out the quarter and the year and our National Sales Meeting starts on Monday. TG I will only need to go Tuesday evening from 6:00 through 9:00 pm. With the close workload and then a very full day on Tuesday (my work day typically starts around 7:00 am) I imagine I will be a little tired on Wednesday.
We are expected to “dress” for the event. Since I am down over 30 pounds since last year’s event and our office is business casual (jeans are OK) I had to figure out an outfit. So for the past couple of weeks I have been hitting the clearance racks at various stores and as of Friday I have a pants suit I will be wearing. The portion of the event I am attending is our “Partner Showcase”. We have almost 50 partners attending this year so with only three hours I will be running around like crazy trying to make sure I hit every table. Some of our partners include HP, Apple, Dell, Cisco, Kingston, C2G, Lenovo, and many more.
I usually keep my nails natural but since this is such a big event I gave myself a manicure. I splurged and bought Sally Hansen’s Miracle Gel. It is a gel polish that does not require the use of a UV lamp nor does one need to scrape/file/soak the polish off. It is supposed to last 2 weeks. I will say once I got the hang of using it, the polish is slightly different than typical polish, I will say my nails look like they were done in a salon.
Machka – I lean towards a Flextarian diet too. I love any type of beans and rice combination and many times add beans in to my salads and vegetable dishes. I also eat a lot of hummus. For your paper have you searched for papers on business culture, mergers, merging company cultures, and/or bridging company cultures? I am sure it’s a great discussion and it is an area where most mergers fail. I love your filing box idea. At least everything about a subject is in one box and basically in date order with the newest on top.
Barbara – Hopefully your hip is on the mend. And, yes, 10-minute exercise rule because I simply do not like exercise.
Lisa – I suffer with weather-related headaches too. They can be doozies. I can almost tell how far a hurricane system is from us by the pain in my head. I prefer not to take medications but during storm season I keep a supply of Excedrin Migraine handy. Smokey does well for up to three days. Since he eats both wet and dry food I will freeze a bowl of wet food a couple of days before I leave. The day I leave he gets an extra dose of wet food, the bowl of frozen food, a huge bowl of dry food, two huge bowls of water (plus all of the toilet seats are left up – I do not use auto-bowl cleaner), and two litter boxes.
Amber – It’s crazy what restaurants charge for food which is why every time I go out I find myself thinking – wow, I could eat for 3 days for that cost. Lately I have just been drinking water when I go out to eat but I am not a big soda drinker either. I am glad you are enjoying the time with your daughter.
Heather – A work friend told me her family now has a wine exchange for gifts. When the family gets together for the holiday each household buys a bottle for each of the attending households and brings one or two extras depending upon how many are gathering. The night of the gathering each household gets one bottle from the others and the extras are shared during the gathering. Everyone walks away with different bottles of wine they can enjoy during the following months/year and no one’s house is filled with “stuff”.
Pip – I am still shaking my head over the bike headlight. If someone took my lunch I would say OK they were hungry and could not buy food, but a headlight?? People are strange.
Mary – I am contemplating an RV lifestyle once I retire. I 100% agree with buying used. So many people purchase them and realize they use it maybe once per year. There are many on the market that are practically new and cost half of the original price. Since it’s only me I am thinking along the lines of a travel van or small unit I can tow. I still have lots of time to decide but it is something I am considering.
Carol – So sorry to hear about Pom.
Bananas – Yes, you have tons going on and I better understand all of the paper. Maybe instead of thinking of the older stuff just concentrate on the new stuff coming in and making sure those things are filed immediately. Then, as time permits, the older stuff can be attacked little by little. I really like Machka’s box idea.
Lanette – Your comment regarding DH’s desire to eat normal food cracked me up. I would say spaghetti and meatballs sounds more normal than chicken strips and fries!
Margaret – I am so happy you were able to spend time with your friend.
SuziUtah, LondonParisTexas, Melanie, sashaspiegel, Roseabc123, Linda, buzzcogs, MsGetnSexyBack, 2020goLizgo, and Pam – Welcome to this wonderful group of supportive women.
Hugs to all and prayers to those in need.

Stats Update
Even with the holidays I managed to lose a little. I do have some habits I have to get back to such as drinking 8 glasses of water a day and better meal planning. While reviewing my weight loss I see those two things result in greater loss.
It’s interesting that I am still finding I am losing weight at the same or increased rate than my younger self. For those of you who are new – I am very fortunate to not have had any major illnesses or injuries. And, WW = WeightWatchers.
2020 list of To-Dos is complete and left in an area where I will see it daily. My goal for January is to be down another 5 pounds which will bring me very close to goal.

Dressing was something I had to get used to in Australia. The places I worked in Canada were fairly casual - engineering offices. Here, most offices dress up ... dress uniforms or black skirt, nice blouse, etc. My office is slightly more casual. We don't have a uniform, and we have casual Fridays where we can wear jeans. But the rest of the week, I'm usually in a skirt or dress.
I also use gel nail colour. Maybelline has some, but not a wide colour choice. I like it much, much better than regular polish. I've just removed my Christmas red and green and have applied clear.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,
Kylia - So glad to see your face smiling out at me! We've missed you.
Kate - Thank you so much for the pics of Spain--like Lanette, I live traveling vicariously through you, as well as Heather and others, as I have no desire to do much of it anymore.
My favorite time - Sunday morning, I can hear my husband's snores from the bedroom, so he's enjoying his Sunday off. I've got laundry in the washer and the dryer, so my domestic sounds are all doing exactly what they should be. Egg (my cat) just left my lap, as she's not fond of the tippy-tap of my keys on the keyboard, nor my elbow movements over her chubby little body.
I've been thinking hard about what my word for 2020 will be, and I think I've settled on "kintsugi," as the most appropriate word. See the spoiler if you're interested.Kintsugi as my word for 2020 goes far beyond my current medical woes, to healing up some old, psychic wounds, practicing mindfulness and learning to love the scars that live in my battered psyche. If you haven't seen kintsugi, first, the definition:
A kintsugi bowl:
And an image from the art world that speaks to me:
It seems appropriate for me, something that's been on my mind for quite some time. It's the right time for it.
I... am going to enjoy my last day off before I go back to work tomorrow, pressures of which are already pushing me around the edges. Hope you all have or had a beautiful Sunday.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR12 -
On pets and travel - When we had our first Great Dane mix, he could happily be left at home "alone" for 3 days. I say "alone" because our neighbor would come over each day to pet his head and put down food for him. She often would stay and read her book for awhile and pet him or just sit with him beside her. Our last Dane mix was not the same. He would go outside and howl because he was lonely. He knew when the suitcases (or backpacks or whatever else we used to try to fool him into not thinking we left) left that he was alone and he would howl. We could go from dawn to dusk and he was fine, no suitcases meant we were coming back and he happily went in and out his doggie door and was a good quiet boy.
Okie in the TX Hill Country4 -
Hello all! Happy Sunday! I have had a relatively easy couple of days back to work, and now this weekend seems to be flying by with activity. Yesterday morning I got my exercise in and got my shopping and a couple of errands run. When I got home I was busy helping my son get ready for a get together with his friends. (He was making an appetizer and bringing ingredients for a couple of drinks). Then I had to get ready for my brother and his family to arrive for dinner and a visit. They brought a crock pot of stew, so I made a green salad, bread, and drinks (they don't drink alcohol, so that made it easier for me to provide). It was a good day, but busy. Today I will be cooking for the week, and also running a couple more errands.
I think I told you that I have had interviews (for childcare openings) scheduled the past couple of evenings; those went really well. The first family that I met with are looking for mainly before and after school care for their two school age boys. They will begin care this Tuesday. They just moved to the area from the eastern part of the state, so Monday mama is taking them to school so that she can meet the teachers and turn in paperwork. The second family I met with is a young mama with a seven year old daughter and a two year old son. Her husband passed away a year ago in a car accident. She is not happy with where her two year old is currently attending (it is a center) and is looking for something more intimate. We got along well and her two year old was a happy little guy, playing with my toys while we talked. They will begin care in two weeks. So! I am back up to my current limit of six children (yea!) while I still wait for zoning approval. (*sigh) I have an interview on Monday night with a couple whose baby is due in April and would need to begin care in late June or early July. I already know the wife as she was in my care when she was young! So it is really just a matter of meeting her husband and making sure he likes me enough to have me watch their baby. lol I am very excited to watch their baby; this will be the first "second generation" daycare family, for me! Woo-hoo! My daughter is very excited about this, as well, as this woman is a friend of hers from school. They were friends from about third grade through high school and have kept in touch since.
Carol- So sorry to hear about your pom! Sending lots of love and hugs your way!
Karen VA- I absolutely love that you are gifting a teacher this way, each year! What a great act of respect and love to someone who probably did not expect that when she met you!
Michele- Generally we get our kids (ages 26, 30, 33) Visa gift cards for Christmas (that way they can use them for whatever they want). So far, I only have the two grandsons, far away in Texas. We usually give a separate gift card for them and let our daughter and son in law decide what they would like to get them. Joaquin's first Christmas (he was about eight months old) and my daughter picked out some clothes and some blocks/stacking toys. Joaquin's second Christmas I suggested an art desk and she picked one out and they have it set up near where his dad does his painting (art major). This year, they got a water playmat for Miguel and a water table for Joaquin and (for now) they have them set up in the former breakfast nook in the kitchen (because if mom is in the kitchen, that is where the boys want to be).
Hmmm...more of you I wanted to respond to, but my brain is not pulling anything up. I have a feeling as soon as my request for zoning is approved and my licensing renewal is done (next month) the fog will be lifted from my brain. It is just a very crazy fog of swirling "to-do" items. Determination to just tackle one thing at a time and focus on my healthy habits. OH! That reminds me! lol I decided to change up my theme for the month. On Friday, my provider friend who built an igloo for her kiddos out of milk jugs, has asked if I want the igloo for my kiddos when she is done (end of January). I said "SURE!". So...This month we are going to study healthy habits as it is also Family Fit month. January is a good time to review/learn about foods, portions, and exercise. Our polar explore weeks will happen in February.
I guess that is all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Happy Sunday, ladies!
Barbara AHMOD - glad your hip is feeling better and hope the laptop is ready, willing, and able shortly. I know you've missed her terribly. By the way, I get hip "twinges" too. Have started a few gentle hip flexor stretches in the morning to keep them in shape. Maybe we need to go ride horses with Katla, that would stretch them. Mercy!
SuziQ - you will look smashing at that sales meeting. Expect to get hit on.
Beth - thank you for info re jumping feet first onto the 19:5 IF train. Watched a couple fasting videos by Jason Fung yesterday, liked his explanation of our bodies burning glucose then switching to fat once that's burned off after 10-12 hours of not eating. Now I better understand how Keto and IF works to burn fat and give our aging brains yummy ketones.
Kylia - great to see your smiling face. Catch us up when you have a chance. You were missed! Loved seeing your car photos.
Pip - organ donors! I see people walking along the road wearing dark clothing and I think the same thing. A little bit of my morning walk often involves a stretch on a busy county highway. When I hear cars I step a few feet into someone's driveway so the traffic doesn't have to swerve to miss me. Gloria comes to mind - but I think she was running after her dog when her accident happened.
Margaret - gave me happy chills to hear about the meal with your friend. What a tremendous gift to both of you.
Jsophie - welcome, our Kate from the UK just got back from Spain! Do you two know each other?
Welcome to all new ladies, by the way. Keep posting so we get to know you and please add a name and general or specific location to every post. Helps us keep everyone straight.
Now, go have some fun today!

This is the bedside table I got on Freecycle. The guy delivered it!!!! I am delighted as it is more or less what I would have bought!!! It's stained grey, so goes with my colours. Sometimes you just have to ask.
Michele - you don't need a ring at all for yoghurt. I use a glass lid, but even a large plate will do.
Bananas - thanks for the video. I am a Francophile and have stayed in Paris around 17 times. A lot of what she says is true, but a lot of it is just big city life in general. The smoking gets to me the most. In Hove it's rare to see people smoking. My husband can't sit outside a café in France for the smoke. I must say I turn into a French person when I am there, even to the shoulder shrug and the Boff. I hope your computer return went OK.
I've replaced the string on the fallen picture and we both put the Christmas decorations away in the garage loft. Still haven't taken the new mirror out of the box.

I have about 70lbs. to lose, but am taking it 10 lbs/5kg at a time. I am in good health beyond my excess weight, so this *should* be easier for me to just get started (in that I don't have any health limitations preventing me from exercising or anything), but I'm finding the mental motivation is much harder this time around.
I recently gave up hair dye and finished my silver sister transition; there were periods of difficulty adjusting to the new image in the mirror, but I made it through and am happy I did it. I'm hoping I can leverage that same mental strength to finally lose the weight I've been carrying around for years, and move into the next phase of my life strong and energetic.
Thanks for listening

WELCOME all the new ladies! When you sign off always leave a name and general location so we can sort you out.
Lisa - I love your word. I once saw a house renovation programme where they had poured a new concrete floor and it had cracked in a few places. They decided to fill the cracks with gold coloured stuff, (not pure gold I imagine). It looked amazing. We can all be strong at the broken places and beautiful as well. Best wishes for the health issues.
Off to do some bonus rowing.

Welcome PAC I am about the same age as you also retired and married. I eat my breakfast at my computer and read this thread every day. It helps me focus on being healthier and more active.
Welcome, Christina in Canada I have had my hair its natural color almost all my life. I hope you'll enjoy it. It has helped me to take my journey to weight loss and fitness one day at a time and concentrate on behaviours that will help me.
Heather, your new table is beautiful
Lisa, I love your word. I hope you'll mention it from time to time in case I forget it. I want to add to my vocabulary.
