Partly cloudy, mid 20s F with a light breeze from the northwest. Today would ordinarily be a rest day, but the upcoming weather forecast is anything but ordinary: snow; followed by sleet; followed by freezing rain; followed by rain; followed by snow again. Not a lot of desire to run in that, so I'll make tomorrow a rest day.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders4 -
Wow miss a couple of days and I'm pages behind, y'all talk as much as you run!
Welcome to all the new faces.
@TheMrWobbly you sound about as much of a yoga-sceptic as I was. Have a look at Yoga with Adriene on YouTube, she's absolutely fantastic! She avoids all the new-age, hippy waffle and keeps it real, which has made her the only yoga person I've ever not wanted to strange within 90 seconds ;-) There's an enormous range of her videos for different issues/people/etc. etc. Seriously, give her a go.
@samthepanda good to see you back, hope you feel better soon. As others have said, just take things easy and run a little when you feel able to... I am living proof of the fact that wanting to do too much too soon tends to be a bad idea.
Having said that, I was wiped out by some kind of stomach bug on Tuesday night. I mean totally wiped out, took everything I had to crawl to the bathroom kind of wiped out. Wednesday I pretty much slept on and off all day, managed to keep a slice of toast down in the evening but that was it. Yesterday I was pretty dehydrated but managed to alternate an hour up and working (the joys of being self-employed and working from home) and an hour in bed. Managed to eat a little and worked on hydrating as much as possible.
Today I'm still needing to drink a lot of water (my weight dropped 2 kilos in 2 days, I think most of that was water and, if this morning's attempt at yoga is to be believed, thigh muscle) but have a bit of an appetite back and am eating bland food.
So.... I missed Wednesday's 3 mile and Thursday's 4 mile runs. Tomorrow was scheduled to be 7 miles. Of course, as I'm managing to stay upright today, I wanna run tomorrow. Of course, my brain wants to do the 7 miles. My sensible side is telling me that's probably gonna be too much. My side that knows what I'm like is thinking about taking enough water and gel/s with me for the 7 but with a hall pass to bail whenever I feel I need to. Then again, last time I felt I needed to bail because my knee was hurting I could have climbed on a bus but pride stopped me doing so.
My mother swears my body slammed me like that because I needed to rest and it couldn't find another way of making me see if.
Meanwhile (and I saw this coming but don't know how to deflect it) my husband has gone into panic mode following his cousin's son's death on Saturday. Because the brain hemorrage happened while he happened to be doing crossfit, despite the doctors it was due to a weaker/thinner than normal blood vessel and could have happened at any time, my husband has it in his head now that it's dangerous to exercise and is giving me lectures about how I push myself too hard. FFS, I do 90'/30' run-walk-run intervals and am as slow as a tortoise in treacle, you can't really call that over-exertion!
Sorry for the verbal (ok written) diarrhea, I had to catch up with you all!

Gone for a few days and I am now 5 pages behind. No running this trip but we did get in a wonderful hike from our hotel thru the Monterey pine forest and down narrow single track to the ocean bluff trail. Saw several runners in the forest and really wanted to join them but wasn't dressed to run and didn't want to ditch my friends. Our friends just rescued a new puppy. This is Molly and she is only 18mos old
She and Hobbes had so much fun playing!
Forest view. I was trying to get the 2 deer that were there just an instant before I took the picture
View to the ocean
On the bluff boardwalk
Exposure on this isn't great because it was taken looking into the sun but the water and flowers were beautiful!
Now on to catch up on posts!
Oh that dog is going to need something to do or it's going to make her own entertainment.
her attitude reminds me of old girl when i first got her. i wish i ran when i first got her.

Today was long. Work, life group, home, moped around.
*sigh*
Just a rough day all around. hugs from my pack to yours3 -
Ran 2 miles. inside. i was a baby and decided not to run in 9f at night in the wind. i didn't want to run but i can't do big mileage without doing the foundational work.
supposed to run 4 tomorrow, 8 sunday but thinking of doing 8 tomorrow and 3 on sunday(race at the zoo). and then if i want i can poke around the zoo after and get a few walking miles with hills. or i can go stuff my face with my fellow team members.
i'm also going to try to go to a different trail on monday. i have off for mlk day. the challenge is to find a trail that isn't made up for nordic and cross country skiing
eta @janejellyroll
snow on saturday. so maybe waiting to run on sunday instead

@Camaramandy648 I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. Today is the one year anniversary of saying goodbye to our sweet girl. I won't say it gets "better," but it gets different . . . less raw. My thoughts are with your family right now.

OMG love those guys. You know they are the most famous physical therapists on the Internet (probably)1 -
I haven't run yet... been sitting here catching up on all the posts I missed!
Running gear. I would be embarrassed to post how much gear I have. Like @RunsOnEspresso I have a lot. Much of what I have are from when I started running and liked ok at that time but have moved on to find things that are more comfortable and just haven't gotten rid of the old stuff. I used to wear singlets and short sleeved shirts to run most of the year but after getting beaten up by my dermatologist and spending way too much on sunscreens I have invested in more long-sleeved running shirts and used them pretty much all this last summer. I do wear the others to the gym for strength training so I won't get rid of all of them but I do need to go thru and purge. I discovered last night that I have probably 5 pairs of running shorts and I probably have the same or more capris and just one or 2 long/warm tights for when I travel somewhere colder than here. I have all of my race shirts, so 26 from HMs and maybe 6-8 from other shorter races. I am down to 3 pairs of running shoes in rotation, all Topos. I also have 2 pairs of Topo trail shoes that I use mostly for agility class and trials. Oh and I have started collecting running hats in places we visit where I can find a local running store with a hat that has some designation of the location (so far just 3 - San Francisco (from marathon), Healdsburg Running and Boise Running).
Running with others - I am also a solo runner (not counting that I run with Hobbes the Vizsla). When I was working it was my sanctuary, my time to de-stress and not have to deal with anyone else. Now I would kind of like to join a running group if I can find one with runners at my pace. I did a couple of runs with my local Oiselle Volee team but they are all very fast and I ended up alone anyway. There is a local BALG group that meets twice a month that I may try to run with even though it is a ways away. I also talked to friend who got me into running and altho she is an hour away we talked about meeting half way once a month or so.
Stretching before running - I still do some stretching based on advice from the PT. I do my PT exercises, foam roll hips, glutes and calves and do a few calf and hip stretches before I head out.
@mbaker566 - Molly's parents rescued a cattle dog previously who died from cancer about 6 months ago so they are experienced. We were noticing though how Molly's personality was starting to come out during this trip. She is a really sweet girl and clearly loved by her previous owners. We even discovered she is crate trained (tested with Hobbes crate). But my friend commented basically the same as you that they need to get her busy or she will be trouble. They are looking for classes (obedience, agility, tracking, etc.) to get her mentally and physically stimulated and tired, as well as playtime and lots of walks with them.
@kgirlhart - I am so glad your mom is doing well!
@samthepanda - I have found that getting outside especially in the cold air helps me to breath better when I have bronchitis attacks.
@TheMrWobbly - I hope your back loosens up soon! I had some back issues a couple of weeks ago and am so glad they have gone away!
I thought I would mention for anyone new who is doing the 2020 Run the Year we have a discussion group and teams that you can join or follow.

Hello, first time posting just general comments...
So I'm trying to streak. Walk at least 1km per day. I count all my steps per my Garmin and want to average 5.5 miles a day.
I was doing great for like 2 weeks, I was running 5k a day... but now I have an ingrown toenail that's infected. (bottom of toe so there's nothing I can do about it except different footwear). It's been cut and I'm on antibiotics but I don't think it's going to clear up which means another trip to the podiatrist and another 10 or so days not running. Which sucks because I was doing so well.
So I'm trying to watch what I eat and go for walks.
This is also my first week back at work from maternity leave, so that's added stress and complications.11 -

@kit_katty Ouch! I had to have one of those removed when I was around 14, it was probably the worst pain I have ever been through (yes, worse than childbirth even but then I had an epidural ;-) ). One thing I was told to do while I was on the antibiotics was to soak it each evening in warm water with a tonne of bicarbonate (baking soda) in to draw out the pus and soften it up. In the end they had to take it out and kill the roots to stop it growing back. I learned since to always cut them straight and to cut a V in the middle of a nail the minute it starts to feel like it might be going that way, so far that's been enough to avoid a repeat operation on the other side for 30-odd years.4 -
Morning all.
Well im feeling serious race envy. The Taranaki off road Halm Marathon is on this weekend and it feels like EVERYONE except me is doing it. I went to park run, and there was like 30 people there (usually get up to 60-90 in summer).
Now I'd have done this race except I haven't trained, I'm on call for work so can't go for a 2hr + run. And I've never run on trails... Too afraid with my weak ankles and lack of decent shoes.
Seeing everyone's posts on the gram is making me regret all the above now haha.
Oh well. So today! I went to Parkrun. Got there 20 mins early so did 2.2k warm up before hitting the 5k. It was a beautiful day. The mountain really put on a good show and I had to take a pic at the turn around point.
Now I'm gonna hang out with my kids, take them to mcdonalds (cause they want to go there and to a playground, kill 2 birds with 1 stone). I've got to make some cupcakes for a charity I'm part of. And then hopefully get some sleep!

Ouch, 14, that sucks. I haven't had to have it removed yet, just cut all down the side, but I don't think she went far enough. This has already happened to me back in March, so there's talk of taking out even part of the nail and killing the root so it wont grow back. I'm not looking forward to that. I hadn't heard of baking soda! I was told epsom salts? But even then I mentioned it to her and she's like oh yeah, sure. I do cut them straight now. I've never heard of cutting a V. I'll keep that in mind! Can't hurt! She did tell me to get new shoes so I've done that. Wtih more support.5 -
Hello everyone.
Jan 2nd I watched "Brittany Runs A Marathon" movie. At the risk of sounding cheesy, not only did main character inspire me but so did the actress playing Brittany. I thought a person was born into being a runner. Brittany and Jillian Bell showed me anyone can take up running and succeed in their own level. So here I am: Taking this running thing 100% seriously but needing to be held accountable as well as encouraged.
Here is where I am at so far: I downloaded the app Jillian Bell used to get started, joined a gym and a hired a trainer (temporarily - with my Christmas money) to help with getting on the right track, accountability as well as muscle building.
Progress:

Jan 9 .016 miles
Jan 10 .081 miles
Jan 11. .021 miles
Jan 14. .94 miles

@Camaramandy648 So sorry for your loss. I know it was harder being the anniversary of your mom's death too. Hang in there.
@shanaber I love the way Hobbes is looking at you! There should be a clever caption, but I'm brain dead from working with 2 year olds all day. Thanks for the link to the RTY discussion group. I didn't know there was one. I probably won't read all 9 pages I'm behind, but will try to look at it often.
@eleanorhawkins I'm glad you are feeling some better. Take it easy. You don't want to overdo and have a set back. I think your husbands concern is part of his grief process. He cares about you and is worried that others close to him will pass too. I was so "overprotective" of my parents right after my husband passed away. I think in part because I don't think I could have made it through another death and didn't want to find out anytime soon. Hopefully, he will come around in time.
@kit_katty Hope the toe heals up soon. Sounds painful.
Welcome @melbarre ! Great start!
Today was a rest day for me. I worked at the daycare for the first time in almost two weeks. I was in the rambunctious 2 year old class today, so I got some exercise, just not walking/running...more weight lifting and catching 30 pounds as they unexpectedly jump toward you. They are so smart and loving. I'm glad I had some time at home, but was glad to get to be there today. I'll probably be ready for another break in a couple of weeks since I'll be working 8 of the 10 days.

Another short run done on the treadmill after rock climbing. Still having some SI joint discomfort, although the run was not so bad once I got started.
Funny that you mentioned Bob and Brad on Youtube @emmamcgarity and @Avidkeo - I watched one of their videos about SI joint pain. The technique they showed didn't seem to help me, but I also didn't have quite the right setup (a table to lie on) so maybe didn't get the full benefit. Stretches I've been doing seem to help temporarily, but it is still irritable.

13k today. The combination of the morning sunlight and the frost on the road made it look like I was running on sparkling diamonds in places. It was only temporary, though. By the time I returned home, it was mostly gone. I saw some pheasant, dogs on the loose that couldn't be bothered with me, a cat, a little boy out for a pony ride, and I tried out a different road that goes around and connects back to a road I already run on. All in all it was a nice quiet, peaceful run.
Also I found out that Ravi Zacharias has a podcast, so now I can listen to his beautifully worded thoughts on faith and philosophy while I'm running.
Got home and hubby is getting us all together to go bike around the lake. Warm clothing required.

It has been at least 1.5 weeks since I have run. The longest break in my memory. I do not even taper this long for an ultra I got sick with something where I could not breathe because I was coughing so much. Forget run, I could not get more than stutter sleep in for days. Then I finally went to the doctor and they prescribed a ZPak which tore up my GI system. I took the last of those yesterday.
It was sunny in the 50sF and 60sF here for all of that and I would have run extra days instead of lay around and choke. Ah well, now it is in the teens and roads are covered in ice so I am of course getting better.
I will probably try a few miles on the dreadmill and see how my lungs are today or tomorrow. Plenty of yogurt on the menu for the next few days.

Glad you're feeling some better @PastorVincent . We've been missing you around here. Hope the dreadmill run goes okay.2

Running gear nailed down after 10s of thousands of miles of trying stuff.

I track everything solely on the watch

Garmin watch prompts me while I run for workouts
Thoughts:
Even after all I have run, I am still tweaking nutrition. I wish Tailwind did okay in my GI system cause that stuff was great. I am looking for a competing product now. I encourage you to try it though. Most people tolerate it fine and most people do not have my GI issues in general.
Under Armor costs way too much, but the stuff lasts me for years and at least the pieces I buy perform better than the Walmart/Target/Kmart brands do. Some of my running clothes have years and multiple 1000s of miles on them. 4 years and counting on all the cold gear for example. The initial cost makes me choke a little, but at least for me, and my use, the stuff is worth it. I do not use the hold on the Cold Gear top, instead, I use it as a mock turtle idea around the base of the baklava which really needs a scarf like thing.
The Northface Jacket is by far the most expensive piece of clothing but the thing is insane. I have run into 20-30 MPH headwinds with sleet and etc and nothing got through the jacket. I actually get hot and have to open it to let some wind in. The sales rep that convinced me to try it was right. Though it is ridiculously expensive, IMO.
The UA Ignitor 2.0 sunglasses have the best lenses I have used, but I prefer the look of the Oakleys. The UA are also only like 30% of the cost of the Oakleys, so function and price beat form. Sadly.
The Garmin Footpod measures stride length and cadence - something your watches only roughly estimate. With the foodpod I can run with no GPS (like on a dreadmill and indoor track) and get very accurate distance measurements (it does need calibration, but I did all that). And if I am running with GPS tracking on, and lose GPS signal, Garmin is smart enough to fill in the gap with the foot pod data. It is a great little accessory that you clip on to your shoes and do not have to think about at all once set up. The battery lasted over a year.
There that was way to long and probably no one read it, but maybe it helps someone.9 -
@PastorVincent I read it! So helpful! It will be forty degrees for my run today and I should have already gotten out for it but alas.... slow lazy morning for me, after a long, difficult week.
Scheduled to run 16 miles today - i will go to the gym first, then probably park my car at home and leave for the run from there.
It’ll be a long day, but hopefully quite productive!3 -
I'm in to comment on the Running Gear.
I own:
Too many pairs of Athletic Works Capris from Walmart. I discovered that the fitted ones have a lower rise than the flared yoga ones, but I prefer shorts, anyway, so I cut off the bottom 11 or so inches of all of them, so they hit just above my knee.
Too many racer-back tanks from Walmart, mostly cotton, a few blends, and at least 2 poly mesh ones that I never ever wear.
The socks I prefer work just fine in my running shoes, so I don't buy special socks - likewise underwear.
I wear all of the above regularly as well, none of it is designated for "running only."
I am blessed(?) in my anatomy that I don't need a lot of support, so I have a drawer full of sports bras from Walmart, and I recently discovered that Fruit of the Loom makes a Cotton Racerback Pullover sports bra that works well for me, at $10 for a 3-pack. So another dozen of those.
I believe the last count was 15 pairs of shoes, at least 10 of which are Merrell Bare Access, one TOPO, one Brooks Glycerin, one Xero, and 2 Mizuno Wave Universe 5.
One Hydration Vest.
Fitbit Charge 2, worn round-the-clock, Garmin Vivosmart HR+ that I thought I might replace the Fitbit with, but now only run with on outdoor runs, and a Sole F80 Treadmill that I do most of my running on.3 -

With my full winter set up, I have run in weather cold enough to have my sweat freeze to my face and been fine. My full set up is too warm for merely "freezing" temps. My big problem right now is I have clothes to run in 20 and below in, and clothes to run in 50 and above. The gap in between is a vast wasteland off too cold/hot1
