Yesterday, a family member told my husband to be careful because a stiff breeze might blow me away! He also had a lot of questions about what I’d been doing and was wondering how I could have pizza and beer (1 of each) at a party yesterday. I told him I can budget anything into my calories. He seemed impressed/inspired.

I also had a mom friend text me to say she noticed I’ve looked “lean” lately and asked me what I’ve been doing. Total compliment from her because I call her “perfect mom”. Totally in shape after 4 kids, super nice and just a great person. It felt good to get noticed by her.

The comment I get that really makes me smile is from people who knew me 25 years ago and, after seeing me for the first time in years, say 'You haven't changed at all'. Of course, I have changed a lot (30lb lost - BMI 25 down to 20) but I take it as a huge compliment because they mean 'you haven't aged'.

I was joking with my dad about how everyone in the office is freaking out about how to get their 'beach bod' and he said, "That's okay. Everyone gains in winter and loses in summer." Then he stopped, looked at me for a second, and added, "Except you. You've been doing a great job."

It was pretty great and the first time anyone's really commented on my weight loss lately.

I hate hearing this and honestly I always heard it from female friends who were obese. I’m preparing myself to hear it again once I get back to my old self.

Over the holidays was kind of bad "But it's the HOLIDAYS!" "You're not going to eat ANY candy???" "But it's the HOLIDAYS!".....I don't think my diabetes cares.... lol

Had gone out to lunch with a coworker although I hadn’t been going out for a few months because I had been doing low calorie meal prep. When we came back, we’re sitting with a third coworker. I mentioned I had to log my food and the third coworker said, “oh, you ate?” Sounding surprised. The coworker I had gone to lunch with responded for me excitedly, “yeah she ate!”. I chuckled a little and said “what? You guys think I don’t eat?”. Neither of them said anything and avoided eye contact. I looked back and forth between then and my smile faded. “Are you guys for real? You think I don’t eat?” I asked. No response. The third coworker says “well you go on this diet and...” trailed off. Second coworker: “Then you just eat a cottage cheese, I mean...come on”.
Haters if you’re fat, haters if you’re thin. Their opinion changes nothing. My doctor put me on this diet and pointed me to MyFitnessPal. The “friendship” line has been drawn and you better believe I’ll continue on my journey no matter what. They’re really gonna *kitten* when I start working out and the rest just falls off! 30lbs down and still going....

Today a new friend (month long) I made at bible study got together for coffee to catch up on our homework and she exclaimed 3 to 4 times looking me up and down saying, "You're so little!" I haven't been called that since 2007. She guessed my jeans were a size zero but they were a size 2.

I've only had one comment on this recent start to my weight loss. One of my running friends, who I hadn't seen in a couple months, said I was looking skinnier. Of course I was wearing running gear, which is much more tight fitting them my normal clothes- which are starting to get loose!

@angf0679 I did Goofy 2019 when i was 75 pounds heavier, and this year I did the marathon for the 4th time

I wore my new thermals that are clingy but comfortable on a hike with a friend (3 year long so she's seen my obese phase as defined on the Asian American bmi chart) and she said I was little and shapely. I have always had an apple shaped body storing all my excess weight in my waist. My shadow showed a waist instead of the usual rectangle shape. I went home to measure for actually numerical evidence. My waist decreased 7 inches within the last 8 months or so. I don't bother taking my waist measurements because I know it's my worst body asset therefore 8 months gap between measurements.

I got as many positive comments as I did the negative.

A lot of people said " you look great " and other positive comments of that nature.

The negative one I hated the most was
"Are you sick?" As if I had some disease. People would even ask my family while I wasnt around.

I dont know how people see losing weight and then think sickness.

Interesting. My thin gorgeous friends are the ones telling me not to lose and be happy the way I am. I outweigh them all by 50-60 pounds yet.

Down 22 pounds and only 1 person that has asked "how much weight have you lost? keep it up!" I've also heard in the last 2 weeks:
"Have you changed your hair?"
"Did you buy new scrubs?"
And my favorite, "you look like you're glowing" or "you look so happy"

I don't really talk about my weight loss and what I am doing because I have done it so many times in the past and have failed, so I'm taking the mum is the word approach this time around.

This thread so resonates with me. I'm not new to trying to loose weight, but new to working with a trainer/coach and MFP. I've only lost 14.5 pounds, from over 200 lbs... but nobody has said anything/noticed yet. So I opened this thread to see all the nice comments other people were getting (and that hopefully I will get someday)... but then I saw who many people have folks "throwing shade" at them after they start loose weight and trying to get them to stop, even though they are folks that are just looking to get to a healthy BMI (not anorexic). That reminds me of the folks (yes, plural) at work who tell me I don't need to lose any weight.

It almost seems like a "crabs in a barrel situation!" Trying to re-train oneself in later life what healthy portions and healthy eating looks like is so freaking hard without people trying to get you to stop and go back to Cheesecake Factory eating habits! Honestly I'm finding this dynamic, this lack of encouragement from real world people to be more of a downer than counting calories not being able to eat a pizza (a whole, large pizza).

Encouragement is such a gift in the world, and pretty much always one that's free to give... but still so stingily hoarded... sigh...

I like pizza, but if that barrel of crabs are Dungeness, you can keep the pizza; I'll take the barrel of crabs!

I really hope all the comments people hear about "don't lose too much" come from a place of love. If you have seen someone daily or weekly for years, and then they change, it gets in your head because they aren't "supposed to" look like that. The great thing is, they will get used to it!

I had a few friends that were a little concerned as I got to my goal weight. They thought I might keep losing in an unhealthy way. They didn't realize how close I was. To be honest, my face looked thinner and more gaunt then than it does now, and I weigh less than I did then. These are friends. They care about me. Some people DO take things too far. I assured them where I was with respect to my goal, and they seemed at least temporarily assuaged. When I got to my goal, I let them know because I care about THEM too! These friends are now OK with where I am, and they should be. I'm at a reasonable place, and while I ~could~ lose a little more and be within a healthy BMI, I'm fine where I am. I hope you find this happy place for yourself over the next few years. We will celebrate with you, and then you can tell us some of the things nobody told YOU about losing weight.

Nobody told me I could still eat a loaded bagel once a week and it would be fine. I can! Pizza too, although it's been a while; I will eat some soon!

The only other reasonable explanation is that those kind of comments come from a place of jealousy. I think maybe it's said even without the person saying it recognizes it as such. So, as the person hearing it, one might say, "Wow; I must be doing pretty well if it made xxxxx jealous."

I hope you only get supportive comments. If you get others, try to take them in stride and stick to your journey.
