Things people say when you lose weight

Last time I lost a significant amount of weight, I had a longtime friend who would constantly tell me it wasn’t fair, she wished I would gain the weight back so we could lose together, I was making her feel fat cuz I looked so good, etc etc. Then I got sick and had to quit exercising for a while, and I gained a lot back. Guess who had no interest in getting healthy with me?
My beloved grandmother used to constantly ask me how I was doing with my weight. I love her to pieces but this drove me nuts. She passed on a couple years ago, and I wish I could call her and I wouldn’t mind her asking how my weight is, just to hear her voice.
Least favorite comment: “You’re getting there!” Or, “Keep it up!” I lost almost 80 lbs. I know I still have weight to lose, but I’m honestly so much healthier. I feel like I’ve implemented a lot of healthy lifestyle choices, and if I keep losing, great, but if not, or if it slows down to an unnoticeable level, *shrug*. I don’t mind when my MFP friends say stuff like that to me. We’re on a shared journey and I love the encouragement. It’s the IRL folks that are eating McD’s and boozing it up that say that kind of stuff and it makes me want to punch them.
Final one, my bf lost ~40 lbs without even trying because of my healthier cooking. He still eats donuts, hoagies, and nachos on the regular, never counts calories, never works out, etc. Well, we went out recently with friends, and they just could not say enough about his weight loss. You look amazing, what’s your secret, etc. my one friend kept touching him. I had lost 70 lbs and dropped 4 dress sizes and no one said anything to me. When he told them I was the one who had really been killing it, I got the once over/up-down and an unenthusiastic “yeah, good job.”44 -

Wow, until a few of you mentioned it here, I've never heard of this phenomenon of people touching/squeezing you because you've lost weight. The whole idea makes me cringe! @GregInORL, I don't know any context in which touching/patting you on the belly would be acceptable (other than your SO or kids). Pretty sure more than my face would be telling people not to touch me!11 -

YES!!! I feel the same. When I'd lost about 80-90 of my 100+ lb I kept getting that type of comment and it seriously made me wanna just stop there!

My personal favorite from the last time I lost a ton of weight was more an action than a quote, and it requires a story. I dated a guy before I started losing the weight, and after I had lost a lot:
I was going to a theme park with my friends. My most recent ex at the time bugged me to "give him another chance" by meeting him somewhere sometime during that night. I of course did not.
Later that night, friends and I are walking to a ride, and we pass by Ex surrounded by two girls. He literally does a double take, with the big eyes and everything.
Most satisfying thing to happen when I lost weight.31 -
I don't know if you meant big head as in an ego or your head will legit look larger than your shrinking frame. . . but I've dropped 100 lbs. since May and my head has never looked largerlovelylittlegiggles wrote: »"What's wrong? Talking about my head. LOL. Can't change my head. It is the one I was born with.4 -
I'm just less than 300lbs and I'm already being told that I've lost enough and not to lose any more.
An instructor also assumed that I was close to goal and was shocked when I laughed and told her my weight.
I'm trying to take it as a compliment that I'm carrying my, still considerable, weight well but I'm so sick of saying "I have a long way to go yet".22 -
I was 295 last year when I started losing weight, became injured over the summer and gained more than all of it back by winter. I got very tired of hearing "you'll blow away" or some other nonsense, and I don't tell anyone about the weight loss unless its my wife or mother (and only her because we go over 1-2 times per week for dinner). No one has noticed this time as far as I can tell, I started at 300 lbs and when I hit the scale this morning it was 278.7 -- but like several of you, I have a long way to go and no interest in getting advice from the peanut gallery.19

My boss seems to have the most hurtful comments. Last week I was excited explaining that I was excited that when I bought a gown for a gala it was a size 14 and last year at this time I had been wearing a size 22. Her comment that ruined it for me I might add, was "I didn't realize they made dresses in that big of a size".43

Comment made to my mother in December (within earshot of me)..."She's lost so much weight, I hope it's not cancer" and, when reassured by mother that it's not, it's just will power and calorie counting "I do hope she can keep it off, it would be a shame if she went back to being as large as she was". Pretty demoralising after 12 months and 103lbs of effort but I've been in maintenance for 2 months now and have learnt to ignore the bad feelings that come when hearing comments like these. I lost the weight for myself and my health and I'm not going to let sourpusses make me feel anything but proud of myself.
@betsymoomoo You're doing great, wear your size 14 with pride and keep your head high. It's great to be excited about clothes again (something I just rediscovered after years of buying anything that would fit) so enjoy it!23 -

About 6 years into maintaining a major loss, I get the occasional comment of "it's amazing you've kept it off" or "you're so consistent" and I really like that.18

I've been here for nearly a decade... and lost 100lbs in that time yet she still seems horrified that anyone my size exists. I have some things I need to work on before I can change jobs. I was honestly just very excited to be able to not just shop at a standard size store, but not be the largest size!18 -

A couple of the nicer ones I've had recently are: "Bloody hell! You look ripped"; and "You've got a six pack. Where did that come from?" These were both from divers at my club whilst changing into my drysuit.13

A fellow who coaches an SEC team and works out at my gym suggested to my trainer some stuff for us to do together, and told her he considers us both “elite senior athletes”. Who, me???!!! We did his drills and sent video to him.
I was still in the afterglow of that one when I got home and opened my email.
I want to do the Chemin de Liberte, which is one of the escape routes Allied flyers, Jews and others took over the Pyrenees to escape the Nazis. I’m fascinated by the women involved in the SOE who facilitated this route and ended up having to escape by their own routes.
Anyway, my email inquiry returned with a very polite suggestion that as I described myself, I was in no shape to do this route.
I plan to email back and ask what must I do to be in shape for next year. I want to experience it for myself. Sans guns, dogs and traitors, of course.23 -

If people ask you "are you losing weight on purpose" - it just show they want to be sensitive to your health. You could have a medical condition (i.e. cancer) that caused a dramatic weigh loss.17

What hiking experience do you have? Have you also hiked with a backpack on for several days and camped? I'm quite an experienced hiker and used to lead groups but haven't for several years and a lot of weight gain. I'm going to shortly be starting to go on day hikes to train for longer hikes in the future. That one you have been looking at certainly looks like an interesting possibility. I would suggest you go on Meetup.com to find hiking groups and then join some of their day trips to start preparing if you haven't already.5
