Did anyone who watched Trump’s address tonite from the Oval Office on coronavirus think he seemed a little wheezy? He was with people a day or two ago that have tested positive for the virus.
Well, he's a habitual wheezer and sniffer. I didn't notice anything different from his usual breathing/speaking.2 -
NYC St. Patrick's Day parade officially postponed. And all state and NYC colleges are moving to online classes. Now NBA suspending the season. Crazy times.3

There was a minor Jewish holiday yesterday and part and parcel of the celebrations involve a festive meal. My synagogue has one every year (Hubby and I go to a friend's). This year, it was cancelled amid Coronavirus fears.
The day of, my rabbi sent an email blast inviting people to drop in at his house for refreshments, promising two types of alcohol would be present in abundance: wine and hand sanitizer.
(Should probably point out that, at present, there are a total of two confirmed cases in my city, neither of which are in the community.)
Also, after services last Saturday, instead of the refreshments being self-serve, volunteers donned gloves and served out.3 -
Today our entire country (Italy) is shut down. I can only leave my apartment for necessities. All other businesses are closed. There is little to no traffic and few people hurrying down the street. This will last 2 weeks by government decree and I expect a month.
This morning on the front page of one of our newspapers was a picture of a young soccer player in the hospital with a respiratory mask. He said "I thought I was young, healthy and invincible--I was wrong". He also said "All of a sudden, I couldn't breath".
Please don't travel unless absolutely necessary. You will be saving lives--maybe your own.23 -

Well it is actually only the Schengen area that travel has been banned from, there are a number of European countries that are not in the Schengen agreement including the UK, Ireland, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus. BREXIT has nothing to do with it, we were never part of the Schengen area.4 -
I am glad to see that people are starting to take it more seriously in the US.10

OK, so I keep hearing about this apocalyptic toilet paper shortage going on. Every time I go to the store lately I keep expecting to see empty shelves and rampaging mobs. I haven't seen any of that where I live in Southern California. I've been to both regular grocery stores and club stores. Plenty of supplies on the shelves. No crazed crowds in sight. It's been pretty chill as far as I can see...so far...
P.S. I actually need to get toilet paper soon. Not for hoarding purposes - just for wiping. But I feel a little self-conscious buying it right now. Don't want to spark a panic or get accused of stockpiling.
Then I got home and read about the numerous developments late yesterday evening, and it wasn't quite so funny anymore. I've been cautiously preparing for the possibility of self-quarantine for myself and our family but at the same time not terribly concerned. *kitten* is getting real, though.12 -
Yeah, it's time to mask up and talk to the neighbors and see if the older people on street need me to get things for them. Be kind to each other, we will all need that in the upcoming month. Just stay your distance. Keep pressuring government for more masks and test kits. Not sure it will help at this point but it won't hurt.
I'm lucky, I work from home and have a home gym. Wife is absolutely going stir crazy, though. Two weeks ago, she said I was nuts. She doesn't work, but she's normally busy -- out nearly every day. I ask her not to do that weeks ago. She's now, at least, thanking me. Luckily, we just got bikes, so we can at least ride around the area on our bikes and get out in nature.9 -
My school district is closing tomorrow to give the teachers time to prepare 3 weeks worth of online lessons for our students. It's interesting that my perspective changed so quickly from 'why are people panicking?' to, 'hmmm, is my family ready for this?' My answer is yes, we're ready and I think that my school is probably going to close sometime next week. The cases of Covid are creeping closer and closer to home. Calm on the outside for my students, worried on the inside.6

My husband just canceled his trip to Nashville today. He was going with a group of friends for a birthday celebration. He's bummed. He's on the phone w/ the airline trying to get a reschedule or refund.
I'm waiting for my workplace to send out an email telling those of us who can telework to do so for a week or two. Which works great for me! THe only thing is, if they cancel school for a week, I'll be stuck home w/ two bored kids. Not fun for anyone. *sigh*6 -
Damn. I have a holiday booked in Vietnam next month (where there is lower chance of getting the virus than the UK, actually). But the Vietnamese seem to have suspended visa applications for Europeans.7

My initial belief was that this virus, was gonna be like other viruses & not hit, close to me since I, reside & otherwise stay within the suburbs, which's approximately 100 miles south of New York City.
My only insecurity currently's knowing that I just've 6 soup cans, whereas normally I've 12 for a potential hurricane and/or tornado but even that isn't enough, for a potential quarantine. I did purchase other nonperishable items to replace them but it's an uncomfortable choice. It makes me uneasy, to go online & see that much, of what I'd purchase's outta stock.
Meanwhile, things here're otherwise normal.4 -
Carnival just canceled all their cruises for 60 days.8

Don't worry--I can tell you with all my heart that you made the right decision. My son cancelled a trip to Ireland. It hurt him, but we all have to learn to make those calls. Hugs.7 -
Just got email (work) asking if we traveled recently etc. Or plan to travel between now to April. 😳2

They’ll all probably be canceling all cruises. Floating Petri dishes.
Still have full shelves here. Rural area, small town, but my daughter who lives in St. Paul, about 40 miles north of us, says there are a lot of empty shelves.2 -
Duke & UNC are going strictly online classes, and new cases announced, bringing our total to 12. Seriously starting to question my decision to work in healthcare, when clearly there are many other things I am able to do.5

I think this idea has merit. Don't punish people for calling in sick to help prevent the spread. Yes, some people will take advantage of it. And it will be a burden on many organizations, but at least people will be able to stay home if they're unwell without fear of losing their jobs. Plus 2 weeks of sick pay if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 (assuming you can get a test...)
