My husband just canceled his trip to Nashville today. He was going with a group of friends for a birthday celebration. He's bummed. He's on the phone w/ the airline trying to get a reschedule or refund.
I'm waiting for my workplace to send out an email telling those of us who can telework to do so for a week or two. Which works great for me! THe only thing is, if they cancel school for a week, I'll be stuck home w/ two bored kids. Not fun for anyone. *sigh*6 -
Damn. I have a holiday booked in Vietnam next month (where there is lower chance of getting the virus than the UK, actually). But the Vietnamese seem to have suspended visa applications for Europeans.7
-
My initial belief was that this virus, was gonna be like other viruses & not hit, close to me since I, reside & otherwise stay within the suburbs, which's approximately 100 miles south of New York City.
My only insecurity currently's knowing that I just've 6 soup cans, whereas normally I've 12 for a potential hurricane and/or tornado but even that isn't enough, for a potential quarantine. I did purchase other nonperishable items to replace them but it's an uncomfortable choice. It makes me uneasy, to go online & see that much, of what I'd purchase's outta stock.
Meanwhile, things here're otherwise normal.4 -
Carnival just canceled all their cruises for 60 days.8

Don't worry--I can tell you with all my heart that you made the right decision. My son cancelled a trip to Ireland. It hurt him, but we all have to learn to make those calls. Hugs.7 -
Just got email (work) asking if we traveled recently etc. Or plan to travel between now to April. 😳2

They’ll all probably be canceling all cruises. Floating Petri dishes.
Still have full shelves here. Rural area, small town, but my daughter who lives in St. Paul, about 40 miles north of us, says there are a lot of empty shelves.2 -
Duke & UNC are going strictly online classes, and new cases announced, bringing our total to 12. Seriously starting to question my decision to work in healthcare, when clearly there are many other things I am able to do.5

I think this idea has merit. Don't punish people for calling in sick to help prevent the spread. Yes, some people will take advantage of it. And it will be a burden on many organizations, but at least people will be able to stay home if they're unwell without fear of losing their jobs. Plus 2 weeks of sick pay if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 (assuming you can get a test...)

Got weird vm from MD senator last night.. having a online townhall q&a tonight. 😣

A lot of people are genuinely confused. COVID went from something to be (vaguely) aware of to "Be prepared to get sick" in a short period of time. As long as your senator has his facts straight, a virtual townhall meeting is a good idea. People generally want to do the right thing.
We here in North America are the lucky ones. We get to learn from the mistakes made elsewhere, especially the complacency that has turned out to be so deadly. It is knowledge that was given to us at a great price and I hope we don't squander it.13 -

I definitely think it's worth suffering some abusers to keep the actual sick people home.9 -

Maybe you could attempt to reframe this... childhood is gone so fast and you will have some precious days to spend with your kids that you otherwise wouldn't have had. Plan some fun things, stay off your devices, and reconnect.14 -
Yeah.. practically doing a daily briefing since the first case.1 -
Had a bosses like that once most are understanding but you get that one
dip-bleeps who threaten to fire you even when your so sick the toilets as far as you can go. I found leaving that job for another was always the end result even after fighting to stay. The next job was better every time3 -

Schools have been closed here north of Seattle for the past several days. I take walks every day out to a local park. Yesterday I was thinking how nice it was for kids to have time to go play in the beauty of nature.
Then I watched them for a couple minutes playing on the playground equipment. All that touching. Good thing kids aren't likely to get as sick, but bad for their older relatives. I supposed it's possible none of the kids there would have contact with older relatives, but I see those kids out all over the place. Social distancing means - distancing.
Lesigh. Get off my lawn.

Ah that’s such a bummer. We have a prepaid Disneyland trip planned for our 4 kids over Easter. I’m pretty positive we aren’t going and also pretty positive that the Hilton Hotel we booked won’t be refunding our hefty 2 room fee astoundingly, the airlines have been very accommodating.
But you’re right, money is money but my children’s health and well being is paramount.

We are in the same area--Cary, NC. Our friends were the "parents" who were just tested but turned out negative--they closed their daughter's school for a day just in case. My husband works at Duke in research, and they are talking about essential/nonessential employees, and whether or not he can work from home for a while. I'm not sure where you work, or what your job is (Dr, nurse?), but I wish you good health while this all plays out!2 -
Re hotels and Disney if can't get money back yet wait they might decide over next few weeks to start letting people get refunded or change reservations to next year spring break3

This was the headline before the Utah Jazz player's test came up positive... guess he made his point.

He must have already been positive during this little stunt, and then all the reporters had to come handle the equipment. *eye roll*
Between him and the congressman who thought it would be funny to wear a gas mask on the floor of Congress and then had to self quarantine, perhaps openly mocking covid-19 is not the best idea. It seems to have a vindictive streak. I hope it hasn't achieved self-awareness
Best post of the thread. Thanks for the giggle. A little gallows humor is a good thing.
*looks around guiltily*

Currently the line at Costco goes around all the way to the back of the warehouse... like Six Flags except it's the paper towel coaster... 🤣😂8

It's interesting that my perspective changed so quickly from 'why are people panicking?' to, 'hmmm, is my family ready for this?' My answer is yes, we're ready and I think that my school is probably going to close sometime next week. The cases of Covid are creeping closer and closer to home. Calm on the outside for my students, worried on the inside.
I think we are headed that direction. One private middle/high school is closing for a week starting today to deep clean and then evaluate when to reopen. My husband and I have a toddler, so even though we are allowed to telework when necessary, not much work would get done at home. I'm worried about how much support I would receive at work because most of my colleagues are retirement age or at least have kids in high school who are able to be at home unsupervised and can self-entertain.
Yesterday our state had the first reported cases and there was rush on all of the stores. Every grocery store we passed driving home had a packed parking lot. I'm just hoping there is still food and basic supplies left when I do my usual Friday grocery shopping.2 -
