Sounds like good advice.1 -
We are making solid progress on the Run the World 2021 challenge having covered 891 miles already. We left Poland, paddled around Lake Orava in Slovakia, briefly stopped to see the Spanish Horses in Vienna, skirt around the Salzkammergut mountains in Austria, had a few steins at the Munich Octoberfest, blinked as we went through Liechtenstein, blinked and it was gone. Headed into Switzerland and across the Seedamm over Lake Zurich, across the Réserve biologique dirigée de Grossman where the highest peak is 990m (I missed that day) through Northern France and into Luxembourg through the Old Quarter of the city and find ourselves heading through the Walloon region of Belgium. Now heading for Calais before running on the spot on the ferry to the UK! Luxembourg Old Quarter Roughly where we are now;

@Avidkeo I think I would go with option A too. You have to be there anyway and I'm all for sleeping in.
@rheddmobile Glad you had a nice run. My 2 cents worth is that I would run it on the trails, since it is a trail race series. I think they should have specified that in the rules. But, doing both so you can more accurately compare your times sounds like a good option too, as does running the actual course. Maybe things will get better soon and the rest of the series you will feel comfortable running in person. You could still place with that right?3 -
off to the beach for snorkeling today, but I wanted to say @themrwobbly wonderful mapping and commentary!9

I’ve been nursing a swollen and irritated ankle since the day after Christmas when I stressed it out running on snow and ice-covered sidewalks. I’ve taken a few extra rest days after I finished up the Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day running streak. I may not make my monthly goal but I think it is almost back to 100%. This morning’s run was chilly. 28F and freezing fog. Running through the fog was pretty but it was like running through a mist.
@Avidkeo – I would go with Option A also. You have to get up and out anyway. Then after ParkRun you can enjoy the rest of your day and the next day also.
@rheddmobile – That is a hard one. I’m not competitive at all so I would honor the spirit of the series and run off-road. Too bad the organizers didn’t state that in the rules for the virtual option.
Glad you’re on the mend @Faebert!
@TheMrWobbly – Thank you so much for that recap of our 891-mile journey! I’ve really missed traveling and this inspires me tremendously! (I’m glad we went around the Salzkammergut mountains instead of over them!)

Nice run @kgirlhart.TheMrWobbly wrote: »So many people want to take the effort to cheat and they are more the fools for it. One of my strava challenges has someone who apparantly runs or speed walks for 14 hours a day, every day - whatever, I'll settle for being 57,000th place if I am improving in some way in myself.
@Faebert Glad you are running and listening to your body. You'll get there. Hope you improve every day.
Enjoy your 4 day weekend @marisap2010 !
Thanks for the updates @TheMrWobbly ! So cool. I will try to add my walks on there today. I walked another 1.25 miles yesterday and hope for as much or more today.
@Teresa502 Glad your ankle is feeling better. I didn't realize you had hurt it.
Has anyone heard how @skippygirlsmom did with her surgery yesterday?3 -
@rheddmobile I would do the trails. Like @marisap2010 said, your conscience seems to know you should do it the way it is intended.
@Avidkeo I would run before Park Run and enjoy sleeping in on Sunday! It's an early Saturday morning either way and it's nice to have a no obligation weekend day.
@Teresa502 Sorry to hear your ankle is still bothering you.
@Faebert Yes, listen to your body. If your course is anything like some I know you may have a day or two where you feel pretty good then get hit with a day that just knocks you back down. It sounds like you are generally rounding the corner but be patient with your recovery.

Pre-work run this morning. It was still chilly but a bit more normal for this time of year. Around 40 F. I got out of the house a few minutes early to try and push for 4 miles. Now I know I can definitely get 4 in before work, at least in the colder weather. I'm not sure it will hold up once the heat returns, but for now it lets be keep my runs just a hair longer.5 -

And welcome to the RTW challenge @durhammfp !!
Thank you @martaindale ! TBH I have been trying to cut down on my social media time so I really love watching the challenge and seeing what folks are doing. :-)

@avidkeo, I’d run before park run. You can always split it in two - say 7-8 before and 3-4 after.
This is what I would do too, in both cases.
@teresa502 sorry about the ankle, hopefully it's fully back to normal soon.
@TheMrWobbly love the world tour! We should all share photos and take the group on a tour when we get to our locations!

It was hard for me to log that 0 yesterday, so I can tell there is lingering run streak obsession there. I'm glad I broke the streak right away or I would be in for another year I can tell. Today I had to cancel my strength training so I didn't go to the gym early as I normally would. Which meant putting off the run until late afternoon. It was relatively warm out though at about 40 degrees, so not a bad run but I was way overdressed. Still, the last two miles were under a 10 min pace so much better than I expected going into it.
Thinking of @skippygirlsmom and hoping her surgery went well.9 -
Hi all. Just a quick stop in. The surgery went well. They gave me a nerve block from the knee down. It started to wear off around 10 this morning. For some reason I’m having a hard time shaking the anesthesia, I’m just dizzy. I’m actually really not in pain. The anesthesiologist said when I feel the tingling of the block wearing off take a pain pill so I did. That was about 6 hours ago and though I’m uncomfortable at times I’m not in pain. I read somewhere to put an ice pack under behind my knee since you can’t put it on the ankle itself and that seems to help. Skip is taking good care of me. I was so out of it leaving the surgery center she called my friend who is a doctor and she came over to help get me in the house and into bed. She stayed for a while since I got sick so Skip felt better having her here. One of my besties is a doctor the other is a nurse, the nurse is heading over tonight with some soup.
Thank you for the prayers and well wishes.17 -
I made it through the past 82 messages I've missed
We took a trip with our trailer to the new house. The trip that normally takes 6 hours, ended up taking 12 because of a snowstorm and hubby stopping to sleep. I did run this morning though, and found that it was really hilly (I will be SO strong if I can get used to it), snowy (YAY!) and unfortunately the busy road to get anywhere from the house has no sidewalk. But I'm happy to keep exploring
Now we're back for final packing and a final week of school here for the kids.14 -
@skippygirlsmom awesome update, glad you are doing well (overall) and have support!2
-
So option A definitely wins haha. Had pretty much decided that anyway. And I'm used to early morning runs, will be wonderful. As long as I start my run no later than 620am, Hal said I should do it in 1hr 15 mins, I'll have plenty of time to finish, and get set up for Parkrun. I'll be starting and finishing at the Parkrun start anyway to make things easier.
I get to pull out my running pack. I haven't used it since June!! I'm so excited. And it's actually 11.5k. Woo hoo!9 -
@skippygirlsmom You're off to a great start for your recovery.4

Today's run was so much better than yesterday's. I ran the same 5 mile route today that I ran yesterday. But I enjoyed it a lot more. It was warmer in the low 40's and just felt a lot easier. I wore a tshirt and a jacket. I should have just worn sleeves because I had to stop and take my jacket off because I was a little warm. I knew I didn't need long sleeves and a jacket like 'dress my run" said. I am still ready for winter to be over, but I'll take the 40's over the 30's any day.
I now officially have 441.99 miles on my shoes. But it's ok because the FedEx guy dropped off my new shoes this afternoon. 😊
I still have not had a chance to read through the thread yet, but I will do it after I post this.

This morning is the first time I've run into the city since I was followed by the creeper to the police station several months ago. I'm pleased to report there were no dodgy looking people in sight today! It was nice to feel comfortable running that route again, I've always enjoyed running through town when all the shops are closed and no one else is around.
I'm way behind on posts, work is keeping me busy so I don't have a lot of time to comment at the moment, but great running everyone!10 -
@skippygirlsmom Glad the surgery went well and that you have Skip and such good friends taking care of you.
@kgirlhart Nice shoes!4 -
Had a great snowy run this morning, part trails, part road, and it was fun seeing the places where I was the first human on those paths today. My goal was the top of a hill where I have a picture, from the same spot, in every season EXCEPT winter. Until today. My collection is complete.I think there's enough there for me to pick out a few favorites (from the same angle/frame and all seasons included) and make a collage to hang somewhere in the new house. For someone who hates being cold, I really loved being able to run in snow today. Maybe winter and I will become friends after all.
They look better in the full views, but here's a rough idea:14 -
Glad to hear Skippy'smom is back from the hospital and surgery and healing can begin. Afraid that first couple weeks is going to be pretty tough and so happy to hear you have good help!
Quiltersyoyo you are also making great progress in your recovery. Take it slowly and before long you will be very active again without an aneurysm to worry about!!!
Kgirl, love the new shoes. I haven't used Saucony much and mostly stick to Nike these days. I did a fun experiment last year and googled all the BEST running shoes and brands for 2019 (back year) and was able to try out a bunch of different ones. I am not sure Saucony was on the list tho. I was disappointed in that I had bought some Mizuno's a few years back that were like floating but follow on styles sucked. I enjoyed the HOKA also but they were "slow" running. And I have no clue still why some days are slow and I can't even break an 11 min mile and others I can keep under 10.
Karthamonic I am really bad about forcing rest days. I have been that way all my life so typically the ONLY real rest day I take is when the weather is really bad (think cold and rainy or icy). And usually I will find time to at least get a walk or ride (my horse) in anyway. I find inactivity makes me lethargic and activity increases my energy (plus well you know - endorphins!)
I started making a list of things which effect pace:
shoes
clothes
sleep
tempo
stride length
injuries
weight
food
footing
weather
elevation
cardio fitness
how big is the dog chasing you
training
attitude
medcines
measuring tools
water
rest
I haven't put any significance as far as weight of each item yet but I do know that sleep is critical.
Another thing I started doing this month. Bene of working from home I guess and winter in Tx. Is doing 2 runs a day to increase training stamina for longer runs without putting too much strain on my knees and other joints. I have always been a FIRST thing or it doesn't happen gal but it's been COLD here in the mornings and when the day warms up to 50 and 60 at lunch that seems much nicer to run in than 30's and dark. Of course the summertime will change that up again but for right now it's been interesting. I was used to taking a 20 minute walk in the morning but work got extremely busy and running is more bang for the buck right?

Upper 30s F with a gusty southeast wind today. For some reason my brain wanted to count strides today. So that's what I did (inconsistently). Kilometer 4 took 1,224 strides and kilometer 6 took 1,188 strides. Kilometer 6 was faster than kilometer 4.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)4 -
Kinda late in the month. But long time, no see!
Not gonna lie, I've been making excuses. At first it was, "I don't have time, blah blah blah" after having my son. Then it became, "Well, I hate running in the winter because treadmills suck and I don't want to slip on ice."
But I've kicked myself in the butt and admitted that all they are are lame excuses. So, I joined a RunBet. Because I hate wasting money.
If I have time to sit on my phone and watch TikTok's, I have time to take a 30 minute run. Especially since my son is now almost old enough to come with me in the running stroller (although I don't want to subject him to the Wisconsin winter's cold quite yet.) I don't have a mileage goal, just to actually take it seriously again.
Also, bit of a tiny update, because I know you all like puppies! This little girl will be my new running partner in a couple of years. She comes home in 5 weeks! ♥ Her name is Millie and she is a standard Australian Shepherd. She will replace my Australian Cattle dog mix as my running partner (only as my running partner, he's not going anywhere!) He's 8 years old and starting to get arthritis, so I want to retire him soon. My mini Aussie will still be running with us, but she's small, and I feel safer having a) two dogs with me and b) one of them being of decent size.

Yeah, so... it's been a while. Happy to say I still remember how to run.
@polskagirl01 That is awesome.
@kgirlhart Nice shoes!
@skippygirlsmom So glad to hear that, keep us posted.9 -
@brittanystebbins95 awe sweet new puppy!!! Congratulations on the new addition
Thanks everyone. I'm considering calling the doctor to discuss the dizziness. I've never had this after surgery before.6 -
@katharmonic That's a great idea to share photos of our locations when we get there in RTW! Great running. I know it's hard to "stop" something, so totally understand being glad you did it right away and don't have to worry about that being held over your head.
@skippygirlsmom Glad your surgery went well and that you have Skip there, and your friends, to help. Praying you continue to be relatively pain free and the recovery goes well. Yes, I would call the doctor and ask about the dizziness. It can't hurt and I'm sure he would rather address it sooner rather than later. I hope it isn't anything that can't be "fixed" easily. I have noticed that I have gotten visual migraines every day since my surgery. I hadn't had one of those in a really long time. Since it really doesn't hurt anything right now, just annoying, I am going to wait and talk to the doctor when I have my follow-up next week. It's probably must my body recovering from the trauma.
@polskagirl01 Beautiful picture. I know you are going to find some really great places to run near your new home. Good luck with packing. Moving is hard on so many levels - at least I think it is. Nice pictures and glad you got a Winter picture for your collage. I think printing it and putting it up in your new home is a great idea.
Love the shoe porn @kgirlhart ! Excellent run too.
@kirstymn Glad you got your confidence back to run that route again, and that there were no creepy people around.
@brittanystebbins95 It's great that you are getting back into running. Your new puppy is so cute! I love Australian Shepherds. They are so smart.
