In for another 100 miles this month. Stretch goal will be 110 miles, but have a lot planned this month, so we'll see if I can squeak that out.

7.6 mile run, average pace 8:22 min per mile, with 439 feet of Elevation.
May have done something incredibly silly today, but I've gone and entered an ultra marathon trail/mountain race... It's in 5 weeks on 13th June, distance is 50k and almost 7,000 feet of Elevation. It has 3 checkpoints and a 10 hour cut-off.
Doesn't give me much time to prepare, but I have the base fitness and my runs are mostly trail and include elevation. I have another ultra booked for September (as it was postponed 3 times due to Covid) and this was going to be my first proper race ultra, I've done two before but I just did them on my own.
Looking forward to being able to do it as part of an organised race. Excited and slightly nervous at the same time.
May cumulative:
37.3/100 miles
4,366/10,000 feet of Elevation8 -

@swenson19d if you get a replacement hip do you think they will allow you to run with it? I know SO many orthopods and they all frown whenever I saw I am a runner. I need to find the 'sports' one I guess next injury.
@AlphaHowls Your HM and running streak is incredible!!! I am only slowly working my way to maybe running a half this year on my birthday. maybe.
@AlphaHowls is superhuman. 🥷🧚♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
If I get a hip replacement
It’s my hip. I’m gonna run if I want. The whole taboo is that it likely wears faster and will require replaced sooner. The only reason it wasn’t done sooner is d/t my age, I’ll need a second one if, IF I live that long. Quality over quantity any day. I’ve not run since feb 2019. Not worked since March 2019. This poor group has listened to me in pain since 2012, lol! Sorry all! But honestly, if I can get back to normal I’ll be happy and settle for hiking and biking.
ETA
Ya’ll… thanks for the hugs. I’ll take ‘em!

I had margaritas last night, as part of enjoying my favorite hobby that I told y'all about, so I enjoyed some extra sleeping in and then lazing on the couch with coffee extra long today. I texted my friend who had told me she wanted to run today and she was also enjoying a late start so we ran at 11. It was a nice day finally, about 50 degrees and sunny, so we had a nice run along the canal.
Saw some turtles, a squirrel who leaped across to a branch and missed - falling into the canal and then quickly was back up in the tree so I guess was fine - and an adorable trio of little goslings with their parents swimming along. I love seeing the babies but I was glad they were in the water and not on the trail because the geese get so very aggressive when they have babies. It can be quite an obstacle to try to run quickly past them and not get attacked. Extra sprint training.

Monthly Question?
When you fall off the wagon, how do you recover?
Like so many of you, I was kicked off the wagon. Then trampled. Self interest question, as always. Figuring out how to hitch a ride, or get upright again.
Vacation plans this summer/season?
I hope not. I hate leaving my home. Summer plans are to rehab, get surgery done if needed, anything to figure out how I am going to handle next semester with 3 clinical days per week when one was heinous last semester. I think “accommodations” are in order. And I’m toying with dropping the whole nursing program. @workaholic_nurse you done yet? Still running? Hit any more cows at 5am? C’mon back pal! (Oh it’s me Elise4270. Son died, took his account).
What is your favorite non-running related hobby?
Violin I guess. Perhaps I can practice 8 hrs a day and find life’s purpose in that?
And my cats ya know. Bear is my constant buddy.

Vacation plans this summer/season?
What is your favorite non-running related hobby?
Oooo, good monthly questions.
1. I'd like to say I've never fallen off the wagon but that's obviously not true. I gained and lost weight so many times. Meal prepping/having a plan keeps my on the wagon. And an occasional vacation helps!
As far as running goes, I fell off that one once. Didn't get back on until I was ready. I just got bored with walking so I started C25k and here we are like 3 years later. Since then I hit a wall a couple times and needed a few days off, but then I'm usually looking forward to getting back out there.
2. We're headed to Yellowstone, Badlands, grand Teton this summer. For the second year in a row we had to cancel a dream European trip. One day...
3. Rock climbing! I love it and the ability to do it indoors makes it a year round sport. Also my family has recently gotten into hiking. The pandemic encouraged us to explore more locally and now we are hooked!6 -
May total: 16.3 miles
5/1: 5.5 miles
5/3: 1 mile
5/6: 4.8 miles
5/8: 5 miles
Drove out to the neighborhood lake trail a did a couple loops. Saw the usual collection of cranes and birds along with 1 jackrabbit and 1 more copperhead. At least I saw that one early enough to stop and let it get across the trail.6 -
Monthly Question?
When you fall off the wagon, how do you recover?
I have been kicked off the wagon a few times with injury but never really fallen off willingly for more than a couple of days. When I have been injured my biggest issue has been trying to come back too soon, too fast and sometimes end up extending my recovery, thinking I can run or run further/faster when I really shouldn't be. Logically I know this but sometimes I convince myself that it is ok, because I really want to run and not just walk.
When I get unmotivated, I take rest days and then Hobbes the Vizsla will get me out for a 'walk' and it usually takes care of itself. I love being out with him and he loves to run.
Vacation plans this summer/season?
We have plans to get together with friends to celebrate a milestone birthday but ended up postponing until October because it fits everyone's schedule better and the AirBNB/hotel rates will be lower. My hubby and I also have plans to go away somewhere (undetermined so far) for our anniversary in July. We are also planning a road trip to Yellowstone, Boise and maybe Seattle to see our daughter, in September. Our daughter is coming home in June for a visit. We haven't seen her since early January 2020. She is a frontline worker and didn't want to chance a visit with us and didn't have a lot of time to visit with us.
What is your favorite non-running related hobby?
I have mentioned Hobbes the Vizsla often and he is my favorite hobby. We run agility together and it is so much fun training and teaching him on more and more difficult courses. He loves it and it is challenging for both of us.
ETA - @martaindale just saw that you are planning Yellowstone and the Tetons as well this summer! Have you been before? I grew up in Idaho and my dad worked in the Tetons (St Anthony area) for several years. He loved to take us there and explain all the geologic wonders. My husband has always wanted to go so we are making plans now and I can't wait!4 -
@avidkeo - love the pallet playhouse! What a great idea!
@quilteryoyo, @rheddmobile, @kgirlhart and others who have posted pictures of places near them that we are passing in our Run the World trip, you are showing me that I need to get ready for when yo all come by here! Love seeing all the interesting spots in your neck of the woods!
@katharmonic - love that your favorite hobby is happy hour outside on a nice day 😊
@AlphaHowls - 3 year running streak! Great work! How many total miles are you up to now for that streak?
@rheddmobile - hope you both are feeling better soon! Maybe as you adjust to the hotter temps and humidity you will feel better.
@SummerSkier - I have heard the no running after a THR as well as with a knee replacement but I also have friends who have had them who are just as active as before. I do think you need to have a sports medicine preferably runner doctor because they get it. I will eventually need a knee replacement because of a knee injury that now has post-traumatic arthritis. I certainly hope I will still be able to run with it, assuming that I am still running but that time (I hope so!).
@pfeiferlindsey - great work on your double digit run!
Thinking about @rheddmobile's weather and dew point made me think about the dew point chart and how the heat and humidity can affect us. I think someone else mentioned posting the dew point chart so here it is. Also if you want to read more about it and how it affects your running, you can see the article here

After my walk/run/hike on Wednesday I decided to take an extra rest day on Friday especially since I was back doing lots of bending and squatting putting everything away again. I was expecting to just walk yesterday as well because I could feel the hamstring complaining with mostly every step. I pulled up a Peloton Power Walk workout and headed out. My initial attempts at running during my warmup were not good so when I got to the trail I started my power walk. It actually felt better when I was doing a slow run. As the workout continued I ran the power walk intervals (longest 2 mins) and walked the recoveries. The intent of the workout was to build to an 80% effort and then to a 90% effort for varying length intervals. I was able to get some of my fast intervals down below a 10min mile, not for long but it felt good to sprint again. My hamstring did not swell and hurt more on the walking intervals. I listened to a podcast on my way home and they were interviewing a physiotherapist who talked about having a similar hamstring issue as mine and commented on a specific plyometric exercise she did and how successful it was. I tried it when I got home and it could be coincidence but I had no hamstring pain at all after my run and none today. I will be adding that exercise to my regular daily repertoire.
Also I got my swag from the Scooby-Doo virtual race that I completed last month. I have numerous shirts and jackets and don't get too excited by them any longer but I love this jacket. It is very light weight and so soft and comfortable. It will get a lot of wear.

I am no @alphahowls. She is amazing. I was trying for a year of at least a mile a day, but the stomach bug has throw me for a loop today. Walking to the kitchen is hard, so there will be no exercise for me today. I made it 117 days. That will give me a number to beat next time.11

I was away a few days so I need to go back and catch up on the chat. I went to help Skip pack up her dorm and bring her home for the summer. She’s exciting to be back to working at Fleet Feet this year, they opened a location about 10 minutes from our house so the owners welcomed her back with open arms. With all the moving I walked a lot of “non purpose” miles as I call them so I’m only counting the one day her and I ran around campus in my total.

@AlphaHowls I'm also in awe of your amazing streak and high mileage. I had no idea there was a United States Running Streak Association. I know you run through a lot of adversity and I give you all the credit for that too. After completing a one-year streak myself, but with nowhere near the mileage you get, I can only continue to say wow and keep sending you the best wishes for continued health and running.
@quilteryoyo I'm sorry your streak is ending. You'll beat it! Hope you feel better soon.
@shanaber cool swag. That does look like a nice jacket! Thanks for sharing the dew point table. I think that bottom row is a bit contradicting though - running is not recommend, but "just run"
@martaindale your summer plans sound awesome. Will you be rock climbing on those trips?2 -
Feel like garbage so took an extra rest day. Chesty cough. Sigh. I HATE being sick.
Happy running everyone9 -

35.86/100 miles completed for May
I had a pretty good 10 mile run this morning. I thought it might suck, but overall it was pretty good. I wanted to get up early, but I didn't so I was worried that it would be too hot. But I got dressed and went outside. It was 72°F, but there was enough cloud cover and wind to keep it from being brutal. I swallowed a bug early in the run and at about 7 miles in I really needed to use the bathroom so I stopped at a convenience store and use their restroom. I have never had to do that before.

So it finally seems my body is getting used to the new speed work - was able to do my long run yesterday without spending the afternoon snoozing! My ankle protested last night though - weird how it doesn't hurt when running.
I now have yet another brand new pair of shoes (yay!) and all my old ones have been given away (there's a wonderful woman in my neighbourhood who works with teens with aspergers. Often they don't like wearing shoes - it's a sensory thing, apparently - so she's always on the hunt for trainers as they're more comfortable for the kids but unfortunately often too expensive. And the joy of putting 500km on a pair of shoes in a few short months means that while they're no good for running any more, they're still in really good nick for everyday use for these teens.)
As for monthly questions - when I fall off the wagon, I do my level best to hang on until I can pull myself back up. I focus on the fact I have done this more than once before so can do it again. The key is to not let go of the wagon, and definitely don't let it run you over!
Summer plans - well, winter plans down here - I'm itching to go skiing. We usually head to Fiji mid-winter but I'm not leaving New Zealand this year for obvious reasons. Instead, I'm trying to persuade hubby to head to the South Island for a week in the white stuff. The kids haven't been to the snow yet, and the last time I skied I was pregnant with my eldest. That being said, our new house will be nearing completion in August, so we might want to stay nearby for those last-minute unexpected decisions.
My favourite non-running hobby is gardening. At the moment I am busy designing the garden for our new property. It's a hectare of land so the garden will potentially be enormous. The key here is to design it so it looks fab but doesn't take all my time to maintain - lots of trees and grass, flowering shrubs rather than annuals and perennials, everything mulched to within an inch of its life to stop the weeds coming up! We'll be buying a ride-on mower and teaching the kids how to use it!8
