After more than two years of relative isolation because of the pandemic, I am even more grateful for our supportive community of women ages 50+. You have been there for me when I was home day after day. You shared your ups and downs and listened to what I had to say. Thank you.
This is a new month and a new opportunity to move forward with plans and goals and resolutions and hopes. Let's make it a good one.

Worked then went to the gym. Just walked on the treadmill for an hour at a speed of 4mph. Then went to the Salvation Army, got 2 shirts that I may take to the condo, then the mall to go to Belk’s. See, yesterday I got a $10 off coupon for there but it started Monday (yes, I got it yesterday – Wednesday) and is only good until Sunday. I guess by them sending it out on Wednesday they figure people won’t have time to use it. Well, I wanted a potato masher for down the condo, but the only one that they had was $15. No way. I also want a new set of sheets for down there but the cheapest ones I could find were $35. No way. So I got this thing that goes on the sink where you can keep sponges, hang dishrags, etc. We’ll see how it goes, Vince doesn’t think that it’ll be useful. If I find that I can’t use it, then I’ll just donate it. It’s not like I lost much. It was $7 and with my $10 coupon it was free.
Then in the afternoon Vince wanted to go to the allergist since he left his jacket there on Tuesday so I went and went to the Salvation Army near there. Got a potato masher for 99 cents and a DVD but I already have it so I’ll just redonate it. After dinner ran to WalMart for a few things. Tried to get my pedometer ready for when the weather is nicer and I take walks around the block, but we need to order more batteries.
Tomorrow is supposed to be nice and, hopefully, we can get the cover off the pool and at least some of the ceramics out so I wanted to get as much done today as possible’
M – my main criteria when we bought this house was that all the living area had to be on one floor. We told the realtor that if it wasn’t, don’t even show us the house. That’s a definite deal breaker. The house we have does have two floors, but downstairs is a party room, a game room, another bathroom, a bedroom, and my exercise room. So, really, I don’t HAVE to go down there. A while ago when I broke my foot, I didn’t go down the stairs. The worst that happened was that it got dusty. But all the living area is on the one floor. When Vince had the tibial plateau fracture and couldn’t go up and down the stairs to our bedroom or the main bath, that’s what absolutely convinced me to have all the living area on one floor
Allie – your condo sounds a lot like our condo in Florida!
I’ve begged, pleaded, and even more to get Vince to write down the passwords to accounts, etc for me, but for some reason he has procrastinated.
Loki went for his ultrasound. He has GI lymphoma. What is this with cancer???? The next step is to talk to an oncologist. From all our reading, with medication cats usually live a little over 2 years.
Food Lion had cabbage on sale last week for 59cents/pound so I got two heads. One of them I think I’ll use for coleslaw. Need a break from salad. The other head I’m thinking I’ll make soup with.
I was going to bake a pork loin for during the week, but I’m now wondering if I shouldn’t use my IP. Need to look for recipes
Rebecca – agree, you and Athena.
Plantlady – welcome back. I recognize your name.

Michele sorry to hear about Loki's cancer. Hugs!
Welcome to all the new ladies!
I had a lovely dinner. I had fried catfish bites, and collard greens and pecan yams. Quite southern. And a brownie for dessert. Which means I better be serious about diet tomorrow.
Annie in Delaware4 -
Evelyn - I used to brush my teeth in the early evening to keep from snacking. I need to start that again.
Machka - you always ask thought provoking questions that gets us all think about our lives and things to think about.
I grew up in an old farmhouse. When my Dad was sick he fell because his walker wouldn’t go through the bathroom doorway. He came within an inch of hitting his head on the wood stove. It was for his safety that he spent the last 3 weeks of his life in the hospital.
I think we are in a good position except our hallway is narrow. I’m not sure if a stretcher would fit through it.
Barbara - unanticipated bills are so worrisome. Our great deal for the plumber to come and diagnose today was great. However, the entire plumbing needs to be replaced. Approximately $3500. Before we do that we also need to get the place levelled which is $750. All of this is going to have the need to have walls replaced…. And on and on it goes.
Heather - I am very similar in thought. At what point are you being forced to live for others but really have no quality of life. My husband is very against my line of thought. I see a lot at the home and it sure has made me think a lot about the future.
My brother and SIL moved in with our grandmother when she was 87, when she became nervous she wouldn’t hear the smoke alarm in the night. When she was 93, she moved into a seniors boarding house at her insistence. It was just her one other lady and the lady that ran the house. Her meals were prepared, she had help getting in and out of the tub and her medications were monitored. She refused to move downstairs in her own house and she didn’t want her family helping her. She lived until 4 months shy of her 96th birthday and was sharp as a tack.
If I take after her I will be blessed.
Tina - I hear you on the pains. My exercise therapist keeps telling me it’s all about building my strength up slowly to avoid more injuries. I have a meeting with her in the morning.
Rebecca - I just love when you share bits about yourself and your navy life.
Barbie - sometimes talking through the process is a huge help.! Thanks for the new month.
I’m feeling quite down and discouraged tonight. I hate that everything is so expensive and difficult. Maybe I should look at a second job for a while to use for Reno’s.
Tracey in Edmonton5 -
Hugs ladies! Cheers to a new month! Thank you Barbie for being our leader and being an inspiration. Many of you are actually, and your wise words give me motivation!
So its 8:00 pm and I am vacuuming. I know crazy, but I really do hate vacuuming. The fact that today was bedding washing day helped though. Dear husband said to me as he was heading upstairs, "don't forget the bed is still apart". Grrr, " um thanks"??? Like he knows how to make the darn bed too. But I know I do it better. Lol! I know I could've told him to make the bed, and he would've.
Its interesting our relationship. Though we've been married 37 years, we really do make a good team. I am a better person with him, as he is with me. With gas prices the way they are, we probably won't go to the Oregon coast like we wanted. I will still go to my sisters in late June, as long as the train tickets aren't too expensive. Then do a weekend trip to see the middle son and family. I turn 60 this June, but I really don't want a party. My birthdays aren't anything big deal, we don't do the presents thing anymore. Maybe a slice of my favorite cake though, and out to dinner.
Lets see my goals:
Exercise at gym daily (well Monday thru Thursday)
Eat my 1 or 2 meals a day fasting at least 18 hrs
Walk 2 times a week on treadmill
Finish eating any of my meals by 4 pm
Start organizing my jewelry pieces for my art projects
Keep minimizing and organizing
Keep my tablet play to a couple times a day.
Arise every morning at 7:30am. (that one is gonna be a struggle)
Ok peace out ladies!

When we moved to WA we moved on to 10 acres with a triple-wide modular home. Except for 3 steps up to the door it is all on 1 level. It has 3 bedrooms and 3 baths with a sitting room off my bedroom and a library. There is a walk-in pantry and a laundry/mud room off the kitchen, very nice when we are coming in from the barn. There is a walk-in shower with seats in it in my bath. My DD lives here with me. It is a good age-in-place home. DD did the house shopping and did a really excellent job.
Katla - glad your DD is there to help.
Lisa - glad the tornados have avoided your place.

From March:
Lisa thankful Corey was weather wise. Are tornadoes usual in Arkansas?
Tina while it is possible to improve fitness levels with age, yes, with age, other issues do seem to keep popping up. Time to be thankful for exactly what is, now, as it may be as good as it gets.
Rebecca the pic of you as Athena source.
Terri the Easter bonnet!
Barbie “first step… stop buying…” That will help me to just drive past those “Garage Sale” signs.
So what did you today instead of finishing taxes, Barbara? So much for doing taxes.
Last December, on our way to the shelter for monthly nail trims, Joe mentioned (again) how he’d like a tough, little, black, male dog, like Scooter, Robbie, Blackie. Sure enough there was a smallish, black, terrier-looking dog in the kennels: “Gino.” I wasn’t sure he was serious so we just came home with nail trims. January Gino was still there, we asked what his story was and was told that he was a little nippy. February, I figured if Gino was still there, he’d be coming home with us. He was, but we were told he’d been adopted and was being picked up the next day. We were both a bit relieved.
So today I didn’t even look for him in the yard or on the board. Joe did and saw Gino’s picture on the board. When we asked, yes, he’d been returned AGAIN, the fourth time to this shelter. He’d originally come from Red Bluff where his time had run out.
We asked to meet with him on neutral territory in the parking lot and agreed to let Tumble make the final call. At first there was some lunging and barking, Tumble sets Shadow off. Gino was totally nonreactive, allowing sniffs, sniffing back. The final test was could they get along together in the van.
While I was inside doing paperwork, Joe walked Gino along the grassy verge. Seeing them together, so much like Joe and Scooter or Joe and the General, tears sprang to my eyes. Gino will be 3 in August, just like Shadow.
First day and night and so far so good. Some growling from Tumble, some OWW!s from Joe to discourage Gino’s mouthiness, a few unexpected attempts at male marking which Joe dealt with. No blood on the floor and all three on the bed at one time or another so all’s well here, but now Joe and I are outnumbered. Good thing he’s stepped up with walking the dogs while my knee is gimpy. Now to transfer Gino’s chip to us, get him a well pet appointment with our vet (sure hope we can get in before his vaccinations are due in August) and started on flea meds.

Barbara AHMOD - Congratulations on your new addition to the family! He's lucky to have the two of you. Are you going to keep Gino's name the same? You asked about tornados:
We live in the lightest colored section on the western border of Arkansas, with the least number of tornados in the state over the 56-year time period. As you can see, there have been lots of tornados in Arkansas. We happen to live in a protected area, in a stone house, but we know we're not invulnerable. Not trying to be funny, but mobile homes seem to be tornado magnets. There have only been three tornados even close to Cedarville in the history of the town, one about five miles away last year, one 12 miles away, and one 26 miles away.
We did a serious amount of research across the entire United States on houses before we landed here--probably five years of research all told. My job had me traveling, so when we could Corey would come with me and we'd explore on the ground rather than over the Internet. This place had all four seasons, a reasonable amount of snowfall, mountains, trees, and lakes. We met and got married in a desert town in West Texas, and were sick of the desert.
We wanted land with it, and this one has nearly 11 acres all told, a good growing season for a garden, and it's one story. Wide hallways, wide doorways, as few steps as possible getting in and getting out, and so on. This house ticked all the boxes, including the "not too much renovation," and we jumped on it. It's now worth three times what it was when we bought it, not due to anything we've done, just this crazy housing market. It's also within 30 minutes drive of a VA clinic, and a ten-minute drive from an emergency room. No major fault lines - the nearest are clear on the other side of the state. Last but not least, it's 35 minutes for Corey's drive to work.
Every state has the possibility of a natural disaster, from tornadoes to hurricanes to floods to droughts to earthquakes, mudslides, wildfires, and so on. So we found the one that had the least of those and everything else we wanted, and it was here.
Whoops! Time to get Corey's coffee ground and brewing, and get lunch together for him.
Later, y'all,
Love,

Morning all-happy April 1!
Snow here (and that is no April fools). Won't stay long but could do without it. Off work at noon after a long week!
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio1 -
Oh Happy Day! It is FRIDAY!!! Whoot! I just have to make it through the next 10 hours and I will have a week off. Full house today, because school is out (spring break). So I have 12 kiddos ages 6 months through 6 years. This is my last spring/summer season with the three oldest; which is a relief, because they reach a certain age and become kind of surly. I have reached a certain age that doesn't seem to handle surly children well. Me: "What? You're bored? You think this is for babies? Well, here. (hands child cleaning supplies) You can help me, then." Anyway, I am more than ready for some time off. No travel plans. I was going to do some work on the yard for my childcare, but the weather doesn't look like it is going to cooperate. Snow and rain forecast for next week. SO...I will help DH get our taxes done and let him bore me with all of his bill paying details. And I will sleep as late as I want, take a walk whenever I want, eat at my favorite places at lunch so I can get the special lunch pricing. lol
Lisa - Wow! Good call on Corey's part! Thank goodness for the downpour! I have a funny for you. Earlier this week the little kids were talking about "scary things". All of the things that they have bad dreams about or worry about. One little guy, (age 3) told the other kids that he was home with his mom and dad and it was dark and he looked outside and he saw a giant tomato coming towards him! The other kids all laughed and the little guy looked confused and I could tell he was going over everything he had just said; because it didn't get him the reaction that he wanted. He looked at me and said, "what is that thing that spins around in the air?" I whispered, "tornado" and he said "Yes! You guys! It was a TORNADO!" Which then made the kids scream and squeal in fear. lol
Rebecca- Hello! Yup, you and Athena...those genes run strong!
Barbara- Awww! Congrats on the new pup!
Tina- Hope your knee starts feeling better!
Machka- Ooooh! I like today's task "commit to being more active this month!" Yes, I will!
Barbie- Thank you for bringing us into another month!
Plantlady- While "plantlady" is ringing a bell; it is not bringing a picture of you to my head. What do we call you and where (in general) are you from? Occupation? Welcome back!
New girls- Welcome!
Well, It is now light outside, and I need to put down some driveway salt because of snow and ice last night. (so tired of this). ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)3 -

We had another snow flurry today. Freezing cold blasts of wind. The house hates cold wind, too many gaps! We are not up to temperature in the living room. I have two long cardigans on and my feet are cold. Will, have to find my thick socks. What a contrast to the last two weeks!
Wrote this morning. I sorely miss the person I am writing about and I'm so sad about their death. I don't stay sad all day. I found this today on the Internet.
Before you move on from something, you have to honor it. Take a step back and see what it taught you, how it changed you, and honor the transformation. Allow yourself to grieve, smile, and reflect on the situation, and then you'll be able to move on.
I am learning a lot...... I hope to be able to pass on that learning.
Love to all and thanks to Barbie.

2022 GoalsMy 2022 goals are a continuation of my 2021 goals.
Upcoming Appointments
Education/Career
Medical
House
Office
Computer
Garden
Spiritual
Fitness/Sports
Cycling
Audax Tasmania
Recreation
House > Office > Computer become more specific as they go along. I have a number of thing which need to be done in the house (sleeping room, dining room, etc.) but most importantly the home office needs a whole lot of work. And along with that I need to organise the drives on my computer into a better filing system.
The goal is to have an organised and decluttered house.
Progress: Crawling forward.
Fitness/Sports > Cycling > Audax Tasmania also become more specific as they go along. There are a number of fitness/sport things I'd like to try, with a focus on cycling, and a large part of my cycling endeavours includes my volunteer work with Audax Tasmania ... and maybe even riding some events again myself!
The goal it to improve my fitness level.
Progress: Not bad. I've been active but the paperwork side of my sport is sliding a bit.
Garden is a very small category because that's my husband's domain but I'd like to finish weeding the place and get some flowers and other plants going to choke out the weeds.
The goal is to have a relaxing and functional area outside for reading, exercise and socialising.
Progress: Making progress!!
Medical is mostly my husband's appointments, which I also need to attend because I'm his ears and cognition.
The goal is to keep him as healthy as he can be.
Progress: Slow and steady.
Education/Career ... little things like becoming really good at SQL, brushing up on VB, and learning data analysis software.
The goal is to expand my skillset.
Progress: Making progress with the new job!!
I've got another month to work with thank goodness because March was a dizzying whirlwind, an absolute blur!
FT Work - 3rd month of new job.
PT Work as Legal Assistant most evenings and some days. Hahahaha. Kidding ... sort of.
Cycling Club event, AGM, advertising, paperwork, etc.
Bit of beekeeping stuff.
Some medical stuff.
Really wonky bus schedules meaning I've been away from home longer than I like when I work at the office.
A weekend away.
My birthday.
As much cycling and walking as I could toss into the mix.
A bit of gardening.
And a massive migraine which flattened me for a couple days.
And all of a sudden it's April and I am tired.
This weekend DST ends. The great and depressing darkness descends.
It has also started cooling off toward winter. I've started wearing short sleeve tops in the office some days. It was apparently 9C/48F one morning.
On a happier note, it is the weekend and I work from home next week. Thank goodness for that!!

April, wow a new month. Barbie, thank you for being consistent at making sure we have a format. I've often taken it for granted over the years but lately it has truly been a lifeline for me.
My heart is lighter. My two sons are flying in to spend the weekend with me. I had told them it wasn't necessary to come with their busy jobs and the expense but they bought their tickets and they'll be here tonight. Gads, it's one week today since Jack died. I picked up his ashes and the death certificates yesterday. I feel a comfort having his ashes home.
Michele, I'm so fortunate that Jack had his business all in order for me. His passwords and usernames were all clear in Excel spreadsheets and he had accounts listed with contact names and numbers. We had redone our wills about a year ago because the son that cut us out of his life was listed as a co-executor. So the POA and Health Directives and wills were in a fireproof box. Jack was very organized and I teased him over the years that if he'd been a scientist he could have been a millionaire.
Barbara Gino, what a wonderful thing to read first thing in the morning. Too wonderful. Love all three of your babies and they are so lucky. If I die and come back as a dog, I want to live in your house.
Tracey, Lisa, Barbie, Allie, and others, I had things to say but have a mind that won't hold onto thoughts but one day I know I'll be out of the muddle. Just so glad to interact here. I don't drive yet, my mind won't stay focused. Damn I hope this muddle isn't permanent. My tough cookie friend and her partner have sort of adopted me and drove me to pick up the ashes and death certificates yesterday.
They are so kind.

Betsy - I woke up thinking of you. So glad your sons are coming. Being surrounded by people who love you is the best medicine. Glad you've got Jack's ashes with you now.
Heather - I was grieving at two years after my mother's death to the point that I was having trouble at work and at home. I finally sat down with a therapist, and she urged me to go to a hotel, alone, with my mother's journals that I had yet to open, and just remember her life as I read her words. She was right, it helped me finally cope with my own grief at more manageable levels.
KJ - Loved the "giant tomato" outside! That was a true lol. And I'm right there with you on the surly bit. I don't put up well with it from my oldest grandson at all. He's moving into that age where he thinks he's the smartest one in the room, and boysplaining does not go over well with me or his mother. My own mother ran the church nursery for 17 years, and about the third year, she banned any children over five years old, for exactly the same reason.
So... on the goals thing, mine were going along well... and then they weren't.
My goals and outcomes:
Be lighter - by the skin of my teeth. I was 177.7 the first day of March, and 177.3 today.
Be healthier - I guess so. At least I've got some hope in the future with Humira - but as usual with the VA and civilians having to work together, it's all as tangled and snarled as last year's Christmas lights.
Stick to the budget - Yep, with a healthy boost from our tax refunds, but then Corey's family reunion in July cost a $400 plane ticket and $500 for the room (3-bedroom suites, one for Corey, one each for our kids), so that took a chunk out of the budget plans. Two steps forward and one step back.
And... goals for April - Be lighter, be healthier, stick to the budget.
As Rori says, we can do this!
