The fridge/freezer went out this afternoon. I went into panic mode. It is huge and we have nowhere to put fridge stuff and limited extra freezer space. DH changed the fuse. It wasn't that. Then he randomly touched the front panel. It came on!
The cleaner had obviously wiped the front and inadvertently turned it off! Thank goodness he just had the instinct to touch it. 😅
I didn't need the stress, so had my first alcoholic drink in quite a while. Stopped at one though.
I have also cancelled my trip to Portsmouth to see G. There is a train strike on Wednesday, and on Thursday morning everything is messed up and taking extra time. It can wait. Still haven't heard anything about my railcard.
We are picking the girls up tomorrow and giving them tea. Gluten and dairy free. Then Edie has swimming, so my son will get her. They have also asked us to babysit on Sunday morning so they can go for a long bike ride. Then they are taking us out for lunch as a reward.
Love you all, Heather UK xxxxxx7 -

Heather- great that it was a very simple fix- that would be very stressful if it had been something worse.
One alcoholic drink seems in order, for sure

We love Grocery Outlet- shop at at least one, two, sometimes four or more different ones in a week.
If you have more than one near you, be sure to check them out- each are individually owned so things are different and prices are different.
It is so fun seeing what deals we find. The biggest deal from one this weekend was the chunk of parm for just .99. Bought 6 and will put them in the freezer. Shaved some onto the salad I sent over to MIL. DH said it was really good. Will be great adding it to the Alfredo sauce tonight for ds.
Debbie - so sorry about your BFF's passing. 38 was awfully young! What a gorgeous view from your grandmother's place, she sounded like a very special, loving person, planning time with each of the grands. Mine was that way too.
I can see I'll need to spend a long time next time I'm in Grocery Outlet. There is only one close by, but last time I was in there I could tell they were expanding their organic and specialty foods section. I'm excited to see what else they've added!
Katiebug - I used Quickbooks for several years at one of my jobs and modeled my self-made Excel budget spreadsheets after it. When I read about your budgeting software, it reminded me I never made a column for savings/emergency/retained earnings. So I added that column this morning and made a list of things that will have to be purchased/replaced that don't fit into the food/utilities/taxes, etc. columns. Thank you for jogging my memory. I can get really anal and break it down into roof replacement and other higher cost items that I hopefully won't have to pony up for next year, can amortize, etc. Having worked for an accountant, I really enjoy this.
Driveway update:My swell neighbor across the street, Roger, mixed up a little tank of weedkiller and sprayed the shoulders on both sides of our road this morning before the wind came up. The "driveway guy" was going to spray my driveway, but I hadn't heard from him, so Roger went ahead and sprayed the dandelions and other weeds for me. They are hanging their little yellow heads and starting to shrivel already so it looks like the spray did its job.
I called the driveway guy and let him know, he said "great" and will be out to level and spread rock in a few weeks. He was targeting by the end of August so no rush.
DH's Tractor - I think I've told part of this story before! When we moved here 15 years ago, DH traded our farm tractor for a little used Kubota with a bucket/loader. He used it for jobs that really saved wear and tear on his shoulders and joints. It's been sitting in his shop for a few years now, not used. I'm sure the battery is dead and it's dusty and the tires look soft.
Last year my next door neighbor said if we ever wanted to sell it, he was interested. Then a couple weeks ago BFF's who have helped here so much since DH passed away asked if I wanted to sell it, their aunt was interested. I said sure, I didn't have any use for it.
Last week I stopped at the Kubota dealer in town. Turns out that little tractor, while around 18 years old, is worth a lot more than I thought it would be. Probably a lot more than it was worth even 2 years ago! They are getting hard to find.
BFF's asked for photos to send to the aunt. So as I snapped some photos of it Saturday, I was overwhelmed. I had a vision of DH sitting on it, smiling, getting ready to do some job around here and it brought tears to my eyes. Happy, healthy, DH 10 years ago. Gosh I miss him.
So I'm having second thoughts. But I don't want his shop to turn into the "DH Memorial collection of this and that" I can visit to recapture warm memories.
I told Roger about it this morning, he said "if you don't HAVE to sell it, don't be in a hurry." It's true. I'm so lucky to have Roger - like a wise older brother. He merely pointed out the obvious but that's what I needed.
I know BFF's aunt and I really like her. She might not even be interested in it. So I need to stop fretting.
OK, time to march out and examine the driveway. It's a toasty 85 already.

Good evening friends
Sorry been a busy day.but a good one, stopped and got Homer outside and took Alfie with me even tjough uts still hotter than the devils chili outside.
And then brought him home and went and picked Doris up and we went to the Chinese buffet down in Willimantic. Its about 19 miles away but a favorite of ours, she took me for my birthday..
Tomorrow cardiologist appt and hopefully ,evening outdoor concert.4 -
Lanette- I liked the fragility video. Interesting stuff! And thanks for the book suggestion (Tim Spector 30 plants...). I will have to check out the whole book, but in the meantime, I was curious as to whether I was getting 30 plants in this week. So I made a list.
Cucumber, peppers, onions, brown rice, black beans, garbanzo, kidney beans, corn, tomato, chili pepper, lettuces, carrots, mushroom, zucchini, broccoli, pea pods, garlic, strawberries, blueberries, lemons, lentils, flax meal, chia seeds, spinach, ginger, cilantro, cumin, turmeric, saurkraut, almonds, evoo, yogurt, tofu.
These are the plants I am eating this week. I have eaten (or am working my way through) all but 13 plants. And those last 13 will be made and eaten beginning Wednesday.2 -
Worked today. Went to pick up Lexi’s ashes then took my sewing machine in to be repaired. Stopped at Michael’s to get needles for the plastic canvas I’m using. Wish they had a better store. Painted some – brought home what I was working on in ceramics since I have the paint but took some of their black.
Tomorrow I’m hoping that after work I can get to the gym. Wish there was at least one day when she didn’t have that lunchtime yoga class. But such is life.
Barbara – speaking of washing machines woes. I usually rinse out by BK shirts (mainly because I can’t stand the smell of BK). The washer was totally unresponsive. We tried shutting off the breaker, but that didn’t fix it. Called an appliance guy and he said to leave it off for 24 hours, maybe it’ll reset itself. So I just took a shirt out of the wash. No one there will care that it smells. The “I Can’t Believe This Has No Sugar” Cookbook is by Deborah E. Buhr, ISBN #0-312-15551-4 (can you tell I have it handy?) Before we leave for the condo, we always go to the bank and get like $20 in quarters. They do have pay machines at the condo, but they aren’t nearly as expensive as going to the laundromat
KJ – how heartbreaking. Am I to assume that she was with a foster family after the birth mother shook her? Didn’t Sesame Street broach the topic of death when Mr. Hooper died? If you can, maybe you can get some hints on how to broach this subject from SS
Don’t ask me to explain it, but Jerry said that it was OK to ask him to put the pickles in the sink for me. Remember how he used to give me a very hard time? Well, even tho one of the managers told me not to ask him, HE said it was OK. So I do. He does it. Yes, there’s grumbling. But I just remind him that “HE” told me it was OK to ask him so that’s why I am. The other day when I had to go to Winston-Salem for the hospital, I told Jerry the day before that we couldn’t make any stops when I took him home so the day before he asked me to stop at the store for him so that he wouldn’t have to ask me the next day since he knew that we couldn’t stop. I’ll have to tell him the same thing tomorrow since I have a dentist appt. Wed. at 11
barbie – to this day, I rinse out jars (like of spaghetti sauce, things like that) and wipe off the wrappers from butter and I can still hear my grandmother saying “we paid for that”. Yes, when the choice was between buying a roll of aluminum foil or a new pair of socks, she reused the aluminum foil. Oh, yes, the odd meals. Sometimes I have weird things for breakfast to use up some item I have so that it doesn’t spoil
KJ – I just remembered that when a girl in Bryan’s class was beaten to death (he was in 3rd grade at the time) what they did was they planted an evergreen tree in her memory, something that would never die. Also, what they did was they took a balloon and everyone wrote her name on a card that they taped to the balloon and then they released the balloons
Started to take a walk around the block. It was spritzing but then it started spritzing harder so I came home and painted the ceramic snail some more.

who will probably go work on the plastic canvas craft she’s doing while the paint on the snail dries.3 -

Kelly - good job! Your microbiome should be very happy!
Many of those are on my list too. I eat Ezekial bread which has - sesame, wheat, barley, millet, soybeans and spelt - most of them sprouted. Looks like that's 6 plants right there. Gosh it's gotten so expensive it BETTER be good for my guts!
Tim Spector's book is called "The Diet Myth". I loved it, it showed how powerful our gut microbes are.
If you have the time, his Youtube videos are worth checking out and are a quick glimpse of the book. This is one of his shorter ones.

Heather- so glad your husband tapped the fridge/freezer into working. Panic city! Good for you one drink. I would have eaten every frozen treat in the freezer just to keep it from going bad.

Barbara - interact should have said interac. It’s the debit card system here. We couldn’t even use The ATM’s at another bank that wasn’t our own.
Kelly - what tragic news and what a terrible thing to happen to that poor baby.
Funnily enough that isn’t my daughter, it’s my youngest daughter’s best friend. I love her like my own though. We were at a demolition derby.
Carol - I think if I was to have to buy a new washer/dryer I would go with the most basic I could find. All of these computer driven appliances drive me a little crazy.
Barbie - I wish I had been taught the financial lessons you were. My parents were both spenders and I try not to be. If I didn’t have family and people I loved it would be much easier for me. I like spoiling others.
Kaye - thank you for that information. I will have to look into it. I need to do something.
Carla - that sucks on the AC being kapoot. I have a friend whose daughter has given her years of grief, she is now a mother and I think has learned she may have been too hard on her own mother. I hope your daughter learns that lesson sooner.
Debbie - I don’t know what I would do if I lost my best friend. It has to be so difficult.
Lanette - it might be worth it to have the tractor looked at to know what it’s worth when you are ready to sell. I know my Brother has a kubota and the resale value is quite nice.
Michele - I remember working in restaurants and the grease smell that permeates everything. I used to wash mine every day too.
I was given a raise today, not a lot, but every little bit helps. It wasn’t what I was promised though and I’m feeling miffed.
I was invited to apply on a job last night which I did. We’ll see if that goes anywhere.
I received a call today to have allergy tests on August 3rd. I’ve been waiting for the appointment for a couple of months now. Last time I was tested I wasn’t allergic to anything, that was over 20 years ago.

I did a quick count of plant foods for the last few days and got to 31. Some of those were spices, but I know my diet is super healthy. I'm trying to make it even better, by deliberately varying the veg. Different coloured lettuce, or cabbage, are two different items. The darker the better. Red is also good. I do eat the occasional bagel, and focaccia, but I'm looking to have those less often. I rarely eat sugar. Fruit juice is very bad for you.
Barbara - The Cuban beans were from a microwavable packet. I feel guilty when I use something in plastic, as it is terrible for the environment, but DH is not as keen on beans as me, so it is super convenient. I hope they can sort out an environmentally friendly version soon. My DDIL won't allow plastic packaging, except where there is no alternative.
Anti fragility. My DDIL is currently writing her next book on PTG. Post Traumatic Growth. Most of you know what a difficult childhood I had, and it took me most of my life to understand it and come through it. It is only really since I started writing my memoirs that I have felt at peace with it. For me, happiness comes from accepting the difficult truths and growing through them. For many years I was wandering around in a fog. I highly recommend "The Way of Integrity", by Martha Beck.

I accidentally posted this to the main page but meant to put it here.
Hello, I am new here. My name is Victoria and I live on the east coast of the US. I've been on a health journey for nearly 10 years and my biggest struggles are with diet and exercise. I've done (what seems like) countless elimination diets (to find foods best for my autoimmune condition) and when I do, I am all in on these. Usually, I feel better and lose weight but get overwhelmed with being "perfect" in my choices. It isn't sustainable for me. It can also be isolating. When I am on such a strict diet, it's hard to be social, go out with friends, etc. I realize this isn't a discussion of my issues rather, it's a discussion of health. So, I am here hoping to find a place I can share successes and find some accountability. I suppose this means also sharing my missteps and poor choices. I had lost over 30 lbs as of April 2021 and gained back 20 of them. While I was barely eating anything then, my goal is to lose about 10-15 lbs which is where I should be for my height and build. Oh, I also don't exercise. I've felt so awful over the years that I have given up. It's a time thing (well, that is one excuse) and I get started, go for it then stop. A dead stop. I am either all-in or all-out. That's how I roll. There isn't much in between that for me. Food choices - I am all-in 100% or on a free-fall.
I (mostly) know what I need to do, but I just can't seem to get there. I just turned 49 and would like to make some solid changes before I turn 50. If you made it this far, thank you and I am open to thoughts, etc.
To begin, my goals are to reduce my sugar intake, increase my fiber and maintain GF/DF to help my gut.11 -

Welcome Vickster.
One small change at a time. Building good new habits takes time. Be kind to yourself.
My payments for the railcard are still in the pending slot. I have written again to the company as I haven't heard anything back.
Luckily, my friend G has decided she is happy to make the journey to Brighton on Thursday. I will meet her at the station.
DH found some cargo pants yesterday. They are a sort of khaki green, but that was all they had in his size. He does have some t shirts that will suit.
Picking up the girls today from their art club. I've poached a chicken and bought wraps. I went out for the chicken at 8.30! Bea will probably not like it, but we love cold poached chicken anyway. We will pick up Edie's gluten free wraps on the way.
My elder son, Tom Hibberd, has just started a new podcast on Apple, called Food Glue. It will be on other platforms eventually. So proud of him. He already does AATV on YouTube. This is someone who has spent many years crippled with anxiety. He has also turned his health around after a breathing and heart scare.
Love you all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx6 -
Welcome Victoria I hope you keep coming back, This is a good place for encouragement and support and to share what's going on with you.

Morning, afternoon and evening, y'all,
Victoria - welcome! Sounds like you're on the right track. Just let us know what you'd like us to call you and a vague location to identify you. Becoming 50, by the way, was awesome, and 60 is even better.
Barely 8 a.m. and over 80 degrees already--predicted to get to 104. The straw-colored grass is crunchy, it's so dry. We're under water restrictions of course, and a burn ban. The current streak of high temps is supposed to break late Friday and through the weekend, with high rain chances... but next week we step back in the oven. Bleah.
Did go to Walmart yesterday, and somehow completely skipped over the one thing I needed most. I'm going to swan down there as soon as I hit reply on this. Need to stop at the quilting circle on the way back and see if any of them knows anyone who works on water wells. We need ours tested and possibly a new pump and pressure tank. We need the water well going in order to get off city water that we pay for by the gallon.
Onward and upward, my chickens!
Love,

OMG Heather, what a panic! We have a freezer in the garage that we worry about all the time! I really have to get one of those magnet locks for it... one of those "gotta-do-it" things. It's very old, but totally reliable, but the way it's positioned, there's just "this much" of a vacuum that prevents it from closing if you don't PUSH IT closed. Every so often, one of the littles goes in there to grab an icee and forgets and it's just a smidge and we don't notice until we do. Usually it's not a huge deal except for the caked frost!!! Unless it's 90deg, in July or August (or like it was in June this year) Hence the magnet idea. We finally had to tell them just NOT to go in there at all. Heck, Freddy's even had it happen to him, so we can't really get mad at them.
Oh geez, Michele, that's horrible! The tree is a wonderful idea.
BUT...
I HAVE TO CHIME IN HERE about the balloons!!! PLEASE DON'T RELEASE BALLOONS!!! They're so terrible for the environment and I am NOT a huge tree-hugger at all, but the balloon releases are horrible for the birds and wildlife and they clog up the rivers and stream and they end up landing in peoples yards and well just anywhere and everywhere. It's really just disgusting. Don't even get me started about those "memorial" Chinese lanterns! Those things are even worse! Do you have any idea how many fires those have started?!? On trees, bushes, even homes!
Sorry, not really sorry. That's just my soapbox. I'll stop now.
It's funny, Tracey. I think I've apologized more to my mom in the last thirty years than I ever did while I was living with her. I know what your friend is talking about. For better or worse, our daughter has an only son. I don't think she's going to ever "get it" because I don't think he's going to give her nearly the heartache.
Hi Victoria! Welcome! Good luck with your choices and your journey. We're here for you.
That's all for today. Carla, in MN2 -

Hugs to those having doctor appts, dealing with physical issues. I hope life treats you kindly, and healing is swift and strong.
To those of you in hellish temperatures, I hope you get some relief soon, maybe a wee bit of rain to lower the temperature a bit. Its suppose to be in the upper 70's today. That's as hot as I have seen it. We have all the windows open and appreciating the breezes!
Yesterday I made vanilla cupcakes for husband as he had picked it out last shopping run. It was wonderful having the scent in the house. They came out light and fluffy. I had three... With chocolate frosting... I ate each like a sandwich with frosting in the middle of it. Saw a video of a gal twisting off the bottom and lying it on top so when you take a bite, you don't get frosting up your nose. Brilliant! Today is a new day, plus yesterday I closed my eating window early at about 4 pm. Eating lunch today at 12 noon so that's 20 hrs fasted. It feels nice to wake up empty, plus I sleep better without a meal in it. Getting back to a 20/4 which is the routine I love. I sometimes share the evening meal with husband, but I either fix it early for my mail meal at noon, or I eat my portion the next day. This week we shared taco meat so it wasn't a big deal to just make him shells at 5 pm, warming up the meat.
Yesterday was a breakfast burrito, eggs, bacon, slices of tomato, guacamole, and cut up hash brown patty in a warmed flour tortilla. It was heaven.
Last night I went to sleep listening to our owls in the trees. So lulling.
My eldest sailor got his birthday box (fairly quick as I sent it a week and a half ago). He was happy. I should hear from Chaplain sometime this week about youngest sailor. Fingers crossed.🙏👍
On August 1st I get my second dose of the shingles shot. Not looking forward to that!
Hugs all!

To the person with the broken washing machine (was it Carol?):
A friend of mine is a plumber, and he's always told me to avoid electronics on washers and dryers as much as possible. Go for dials instead. That way regular plumbers have a good chance of being able to fix a machine when it breaks.2 -
Picked up the girls and had fun with them. My planned meal was a hit! Even Bea ate it!
Then my son arrived to take Max and Edie to their swimming class. He left Bea with us for another hour or more. Not in the plan.
We watched Madagascar, which I had recorded and we all enjoyed it. We definitely needed a drink when he finally came back to pick her up.
Next time on Sunday.
England/Sweden women's semi final tonight. DH will be watching.
Will edit another chapter tomorrow. I wimped out this morning with shopping and cooking and washing hair etc. Tomorrow is clear.
