Today's feast:
Wilted spinach, cottage cheese, onions and mushrooms sauted, in a nice marinara sauce with diced tomatoes, some cut up meatballs, and cheesy ravioli. It was delightful. Dessert was sugar free dark chocolate, a sugarfree coconut chocolate piece, prunes and a fig Newton with coffee. Very satisfied.
My son sent photos that his wife got a crested baby gecko lizard. So they have quite a menagerie of dogs, fish, snails, shrimp and a lizard. Oh and Athena!😂💖

Discovered yesterday, according to opthamalogist, I do not have eye infections. I have scleritis which is an inflammatory condition. They are not sure what causes it, they think related to underlying autoimmune/inflammatory disorder. Treatment right now is steroid drops every two hours. May have to use oral steroids. Can last for months. Can have recurrences. Can have some bad effects if not handled. Well, at least I have something with an interesting name! There are much worse things in life. As I tried working today (eye still painful) I thought "Why are you doing this? You don't have to work." Yep-the end is in sight.
Daily list:3 Let go of at least 5 items in your house-I have two boxes of "stuff" I packed up before my surgery that I haven't been able to get out of house due to lifting restrictions-they are going to Goodwill Saturday

I did my dumbbells Yay! And I ate well today. Yay! And little Teddy is recuperating from having his teeth pulled. We are listening to the rain together.
Tomorrow is a busy day- groceries, tea with my aunt, call the insurance for my dad, and pay a bill that I keep forgetting. I better set some reminders. That's the only way I can keep up.

Lanette: My new DIL is Hispanic and my son works on his Spanish. My language is to play around with Mandarin because I like the calligraphy that goes with it. I haven't done it this past year, but do have a Coursera course I could return to and start again.
Tina: Great you are so active! I am rather jealous! I am mostly homebound these days....but no excuse...I could move more in the house!
Grandmallie: We had a green car for my son when he was around the same age as Miles. We still have it in the storage room!

Katla: I think it is a good, practical decision to stay near your daughter. I have a friend here who has no family near by and has respiratory issues. She doesn't want to leave her friends, but whenever she gets sick one of the children must come. I know that no matter where my son finally lives, I will probably eventually move closer to him.
Good day today. I got together with some church ladies. Then my husband and I watched an episode of Yellowstone together. I really like having the couch near his wheelchair so we are closer together. This Sunday is his birthday so I will go out tomorrow and get a card and some balloons. I am not sure what he can really still eat, but am trying to think of something I can put in the blender. My son will come this week end. This will be the third week end he has come!

Heather - Rodger was more into sports when we were young. He had done some woodwork in high school but didn’t look at it as a hobby until probably 20 years ago.

Truthfully though kids nowadays just amaze me. I think they grow up too fast though.

Vicki - I use FB to keep in touch with several friends and family that live long distance. I don’t know how I could give it up. I do not play any games. Most of my online time is spent on here. I really haven’t figured out a way to keep up and limit my screen time.
Debbie - I hope you find the strength to speak up. It takes some work but you will be proud of yourself and know where you stand when you do.
When I was finally determined that I wasn’t going to continue living the way I was. I decided I needed to change and he could choose to change or not. One of my biggest issues was not rehashing (in my mind) every single thing he ever did wrong. I came across the prayer below on Pinterest. I swear I read it every day and sometimes several times a day for what seemed like months before I finally noticed a difference in him and me. I still read it occasionally and have recommended it to a friend that was struggling with her marriage. He never knew how I had set out to change my reactions rather than expecting him to change.
Michele - we use socks for washes. I’ll share a picture of a piece where it was used. It gives an antique look almost to pieces.
Ginny - I hope your eye heals soon.
Ceramics started tonight after the Christmas break. I am still working on the piece I was working on before Christmas. I didn’t get much further with it. I really wasn’t in the mood for it tonight but really enjoyed the conversations with the ladies.
It is late and I’m heading to bed.

Lanette - I do daily strength training. Some of it is own body weight, on my yoga mat, like knee push ups. I am currently doing around 25. You can easily research 'own body weight' on YouTube.
After my general mat work, which is a mixture of yoga, pilates, strength and balance, with knee strengthening as a focus, I do a short session of free weights. 11 bicep curls with two 20 lb dumbbells. Then with one dumbbell, I do something (I have forgotten the name) where you lower it behind your head, around 12 of those, then I do side arm raises on one leg, with 4.5 lb dumbbells. Around 15 of those on my bad knee side, while slightly moving up and down on my knee. The other leg is waving about. I do the dumbbells until I can't do much more, not exactly 'to failure'. It's important to take your time lowering them, probably more important than the contraction.
Of course, previous to this I have spent 45 -50 mins in the exercise room, splitting my time between the rower, the recumbent bike and the elliptical. Best money we ever spent!
In the afternoon, I either walk, or do 25 mins on the rower.
On the days I go out and run first thing, which is not as often in the winter, I skip the strength training and machines.
Believe me, I see the results of all this effort when we go on our cruises. Most people there seem a whole generation above us, like our parents. We are fit and mobile, walking up and down 10 long flights of stairs many times a day. We never take the lift. We can easily get on and off the tenders (ferry boats from the ship to land).
Even on board we get up at 6.45 to get into the gym, and I dance twice a day.
My muscles haven't atrophied and I have arm definition and solid thighs.
Yes, I get tired, yes, I am not as agile as I was, yes, everything aches sometimes. Often! But it is definitely worth it!

Lanette: I do a range of strength training at home most days. I have dumbbells, and resistance bands. I use YouTube videos for various targeted areas, and a mixture of body weight and free weights. I also like to combine cardio and strength by doing walking based workouts as they are good for building stamina.
I like variety, so also do yoga, Pilates, qigong, and Tai Chi. I walk and take the stairs whenever possible when out and about.
I do have to do modified versions of some exercises because of my knees, but I’m in reasonably good shape for a 76 year old.
I do have the advantage of being retired with few ‘have to dos’ so do my exercise in small chunks throughout the day.

The day dawned sunny and there was NO WIND. Definitely a running day.
Before breakfast, I asked the family how they had got on for their first night in their new apartment. I got this photo back.
I said I would wave at the balcony as I turned at the toilets and café you can see in the centre of the picture. That is my normal turning point to come home.
I stopped to take my own photo.
Then I took one of me coming past the huts.
Don't know why that won't load properly!?
Stopped at the deli and then staggered home. Knackered! It's my first run since Christmas Eve. Hips are feeling it.

Positives for yesterday- Dr appointment was productive, I think. She is a new doctor for me, we will see. Started my new medicines yesterday since sister in law picked them up for me while she was out and about. Productive at work. "Anastasia" was wonderful as was the time with my oldest daughter.
No real dinner, but did pack berries, crackers, and cheese to eat on drive home. Calories were within range, water goal was met-64 oz, and macros looked really good! I got home at 11:45 pm and realized I had close to 9400 steps, so I figured I would do the things I needed to do quickly, then walk out those last 600 steps......forgot everything reset at midnight That is okay though as I still got 9400 steps!!!
I took my BP this morning before having my coffee and it was perfectly normal. only 13 more times to check. I am a little tired this morning, but last night was so much fun.
Tracey The poem you posted reminded me of a book I have read "Change me". It basically expands on that poem.
To all you ladies that strength train and cardio-WOW! You are impressive! I really need to find something that I enjoy. The doctor said active lifestyle is good, but dedicated exercise is better.

5. I did move actually for 98 minutes yesterday and climbed 8 flights of stairs! We don't have stairs at home or work.
6. I didn't write my goals down last year in an easy to go to place, so while I can't say if I met any, I will say that I started some new habits that have stuck. One at a time, Progression!

So I so need to do more cardio....I did 5 minutes of skipping, walking, and jogging and was so out of breath! OMG- I guess exercise needs to take a higher priority! Gives me greater respect for you all that jog and bike so much.
So I have added something to my goals- I need to quit vaping. I quit smoking years ago, but vaping took its place. I am down to only 3 mg nicotine from 12mg. I want to get some other healthy habits in place first, but this is still a goal. I haven't told anyone else, so you are the first to know. I vape Cinnamon flavor and it is no longer available as I have always gotten it. I don't like the tobacco ones, so realistically, I guess, the laws are making the choice even more necessary. So I WILL be a non vapor at the end of the year. Progression!

Regarding Exercise:
The past couple months haven't been that great for me with regard to exercise because of the biopsies and surgery. I was told to rest.
And 2022 didn't feel like a good exercise year for me, but when I checked my stats, I actually had the best year for walking in a few years and matched last year for cycling. So it wasn't that bad.
But here is what I try to do. Try being the key word.
I exercise as many days as possible, but I vary my exercise. So one day might be a casual walk and another day might be a more strenuous bicycle ride. Last year, I exercised 303 days of the year = 83%.
On the days I work, I walk about 1 km (maybe 10 min) in my commute.
At lunch, I walk a minimum of 1 km but often at least 2 km and sometimes somewhere up to 6 km. 6 km is all I can do in 1 hour.
I work in buildings with stairs and do at least a couple flights of 20 steps a day. I'm still in rest mode right now, but I get those 2 flights in. Most of the time, I try to climb somewhere between 5 and 10 flights and when I'm in a stair climbing challenge, it'll be a lot more than that.
This past year, I have struggled with tiredness when I get home from work and we haven't done much exercise in the evenings. But I do go out for about half an hour and walk Rhody. That involves a lot of standing (while I do calf raises, stretches, etc.) and then sudden jogs around the outside of the house.
When I do have energy in the evenings, we go for a short bicycle ride outside, or I might go for a walk to the beach, or we go downstairs to our gym where I will usually row and/or walk/jog on the treadmill and/or do weights and Pilates. This past year, that probably happened about once a week. I hope to increase it this year.
On weekends, we usually cycle somewhat longer distances and I often garden for 2 or 3 hours which is very much like a solid Pilates workout. Sometimes I might go for a walk or run to the beach instead of cycling or as well as cycling.
In general, I try not to sit too long. I like to get up in the evenings during commercial breaks and walk around. That's when I do some housework, put away the laundry, etc. At work, I'm up and down getting a glass of water and then using the toilet, and (when I'm not on medical rest), I'll do a few flights of stairs.
I don't know if it is true or not, or if it makes much difference, but I have read that sitting up burns more calories than lying down, and standing up burns more calories than sitting, and moving around while standing burns more calories than just standing there, and walking ... you get the picture.
If all goes well, tomorrow I'll shovel a lot of rock and then go for a bicycle ride.

Welcome home, Bella! The story of Bella's return reminds me of an ongoing controversy in a Facebook local "talk" group that I belong to. Every time someone posts a picture of a found animal, there are two men who jump on the posters, calling them thieves and worse. Both of these men are of the opinion that an animal, left alone, will eventually find its on way back home and that is what you should do. The rescuers, on the other hand, believe the animal is safer in their custody being fed and kept from getting hit by a car. I would say that I was previously firmly on team rescue, but the guys do have somewhat of a point, even though they are most obnoxious in their expression of it. I always find it interesting when I see two very differing points of view that make me think my own interpretation of what to do could be wrong. I won't say they've made me change my mind, but they did give me something to think about.
I've been doing fairly well with my goal to RENEW my healthy habits. Something that is actually working in my favor is that my husband, who has always been a healthy weight, walks an average of 6 miles per day, but does love his cookies, white rice, and potatoes, was diagnosed pre-diabetic. He is becoming a carb detective, which is helping him me more accepting of things I've been trying to sneak in like brown rice, sweet potatoes, and low carb bread. It will keep the cookies and ice cream bars out of the house, which were two triggers for me.7 -
Good morning, afternoon or evening, my dears, depending on the time zone where you may reside.
My word for 2022 was "recover." I'm finally at a spot where I feel like I can also look at last year and my goals. My goals for the year and for each month individually are always the same:
✅ - Be lighter: I was 174.1 on the first of January 2022 and 152.2 on January 1, 2023. (151.1 this morning). Still don't recommend how it's coming off, but I'm so near to my long-term maintenance goal range (145-150) that I can't help but be pleased. I actually got down to 148 last month, but popped back up again.
✅- Be healthier: I am in much better shape in regard to my health, and I am so grateful. Don't get me wrong, I'm not back to my old self, the exhaustion and pain lie in wait around every corner, but daily, the time between the need to stop, drop into a chair and relax for a bit is getting slightly longer. For those who don't know me, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 14 months ago. This is why my word for 2022 was "recover."
✅- Stick to the budget: We got a chunk paid off on the house earlier in the year, and we had planned to get it completely paid off, but we're putting away every penny now in hopes that we'll be able to buy the property next door to us, which has a teardown house that has been used over and over by squatters. The owners are finally looking to sell it, but have been MIA since mid-December.
I think my word for 2023 is "progress." Both its pronunciations fit my life, whether PRAH-gress or pro-GRESS.
My goals for 2023 are:
✅- Get to maintenance range
✅- Get healthier
✅- Stick to the budget
For those who wonder why, even though it would be easy to trumpet goal numbers on all these things, I don't. The answer is my slightly obsessive personality that tries to make me believe I've failed, weight-wise, even if I've only gained .1 pounds. I need to not do that to myself, so I take the numbers out of my goals. Everyone has their own way of dealing with these things, this is just mine.

I must say Heather and everyone else. You have inspired me! I have been letting myself go because I do not sleep well at night and struggle with fatigue during the day. I think I was slowly putting off exercise until I was a widow. But I had best not do this. The GA sun is out and I plan to walk this morning and then come back and do some weight lifting. I won't have time to go to the gym. I am lonely and should see a friend, but there isn't time for both. I will just do the best I can! Then maybe this afternoon I will do some calligraphy, just to have a creative outlet! I wish I could walk with a friend, but the only friend I have that walks, walks her dog early in the morning.10

Hey ladies! I’m new to MyFitnessPal. I’m LeighAnn. Trying to get back into my fitness routine. I used to be really intense with it then got Covid and it everything went haywire. It’s taken a whole year and a half and I’m still recovering. But with the Grace of God I will get through it. I’m trying to get back on track with eating better too. It’s crazy how when 1 thing gets thrown off balance it can throw so much off. But I turned 50 this year and I have stage 4 kidney disease and I weigh 210 lbs. 😢 But I know I can survive because I have been through a lot over the years. I have 2 sweet kitty fur babies. But I got excited when I saw this post. I guess I don’t really have a word unless it’s maybe “strength”. You ladies are awesome! ❤️🙏🏻9
