Just finished 12 miles. The last two were tough. Peyton’s run is next weekend.
Glad you are safe @AlphaHowls The winds were pretty bad at my house. The power flickered off several times but thankfully stayed on. I’m glad that system has passed!8 -

Yes glad you are safe @AlphaHowls! I think you got our storms from the night before. We had 80mph winds and torrential rain. Don't think we had any damage, but electricity went out for an hour during dinner.
Got in 10 miles this morning. Guess it could have been worse. I'm actually surprised it went this well. Looking forward to a day off though.

Sounds like a nice morning @Mari33a .
Great running @Teresa502 . You'll do great next weekend! Glad you are safe too.
Nice running @Scott6255 !
On this day in 1994, I married the love of my life. Had he lived, today would have been out 29th anniversary. Since I was supposed to do a long run today, I didn't want to run "just" 2.9 miles, so I traversed a total of 9.4 instead. I walked a total of 1.4 miles for warm up and cool down and did a run/walk of 8.0 miles on the treadmill. That wun was sneasy, but my HR was good. I am waiting for the day when 8 miles is a lot easier than they were today. My Avg HR was125 with a max of 141 bpm.

March Goal: 115 Miles
3/1: 5.06 miles
3/2: 5.51 miles
3/3: 2.15 miles
3/4: 2.02 miles
14.74/115 miles completed for March
I ran 2 miles again today. It was more windy today and felt pretty tough going south, but otherwise it was a beautiful morning. I wasn't as fast as yesterday, but still was faster than most days.
Congratulations on your PR @Martindale. I can't wait to read about it.
What a great way to celebrate your anniversary @quilteryoyo.

@AlphaHowls - stay safe! Hope there isn't too much damage!
@quilteryoyo - that is such a nice tribute run! I never found 8 miles to be as hard outside as a run on the treadmill of a much shorter distance. Can't imagine an 8 mile treadmill run but you did great with it!
I got a total of nearly 5 miles yesterday walking to and from the Steinbeck Museum here and then we walked another 2 miles or so around the old town area. It was lovely out although the wind was really cold and it never occurred to me that we should have had sunscreen. Both my DD and I got fried (like mother like daughter I guess) and are still 'glowing' tonight. Today we had planned a hike at Pinnacles National Monument but the forecast was for rain and possibly snow, so instead we headed towards the ocean and went for a hike along the Garrapata State Park Bluff Trail and Soberanes Point just south of Carmel. It was so cold and windy but fortunately we all had appropriate clothing. I could have used my gloves though. I actually ran a few bits along the main parts of the trail just to see how it felt (amazing!) and as bundled up as we were it was a shock to see a guy running the trails in shorts and a hydration vest! Afterwards we headed to Carmel to walk some more until it started pouring, literally raining hard and fast to result in flooded streets. So glad we have a high profile Subaru!
Pictures of the trails under the split. I would love to come back and actually run it - it was so beautiful!9 -
Morning everyone! Happy Sunday!
Up early, so ran into the City instead of my usual loop. Got in a little over 7.5M
@shanaber - amazing pics! Love your National park Hike pics/views5 -
Thanks @kgirlhart ! You did great.
Thanks @shanaber . I can usually do okay with about 6 miles on the treadmill, but yesterday I just wanted to quit after 1. LOL But, I made myself keep going and so glad that I did. You did a LOT of walking. That area looks so pretty! Thanks for sharing the photos! BTW, worst sunburn I ever had was snow skiing. Like you, it didn't even occur to me that I would need it on the slopes.
Nice early morning run @tarun_yadavA !

@shanaber awesome pics, it does look like the kind of place that would make for fun runs. I know what you mean about the sunscreen, it never dawns on me atm because the weather's been pretty cold (for us, at least, probably almost tropical for some!) But my face and neck after runs that I really must start using it already. I don't remember ever burning in early March before, wonder if it's all to do with climate change like the extreme temperatures and weather.
I'm still recovering from that accidental race I shouldn't have tried to race on Tuesday. Legs are tender, and I'm still feeling tired. But teenager drama, other family drama, work and other general crap have really been stressing me out. That combined with post-race appetite and stress eating like a pig with worme has caused my stress-induced gastritis to raise its ugly head.
So this morning, my friend talked me into getting up at 7 and heading out for a plod round the hills. We jogged, we walked (and I huffed and puffed) my way up hills, we chatted, I moaned a lot about stress and life and stuff, then she talked me into going down my nemesis technical hill that I'm scared of twice, and I talked her into trying to run back up another hill. She gave up and walked, I managed to jog to the top but nearly puked.
Ended up coming to 11km, plus a couple more to walk home. My legs are going to hurt tomorrow but I feel so much better for it!
Slightly worried though, we signed up for a 5k together next weekend, she's fast on roads and I'm most certainly not at the moment hahaha.
In other news, I'm doing my best not to accidentally sign up for a 50k in the UK a month after my marathon....9 -
.I saw this article about selecting running shoes that I think has information applicable to most all of us. So a monthly question to start out the month - how do you pick your running shoes? Next version of the same model, recommendation of a running store, other???
It depends. If I am happy with the shoes I am using, I will just order the new model. I love being able to buy online rom the comfort of my couch. But, if I need something new for different goals or just outgrowing my current models, I visit my local shoe store. They have a really good variety so I can try on several options and find one that feels good. Because the employees are runners, they seem to understand what you are going for and make good recommendations. They even have a treadmill in the store and will let you run laps up and down the sidewalk to see what they feel like when you are running.
I also usually have about 4 pairs in rotation but I have waaay more right now. Right now, I am still finishing off mileage on 3 pairs of ghosts for easy mid distance runs (used to be my daily trainer but not working as well for me anymore), 1 pair of brooks launch that are mainly my treadmill shoe (they’re pretty clean), 1 pair of HOKA Mach (my fave for speed work/racing), 1 pair of HOKA Clifton (too squishy for much beyond a short recovery run), and 1 pair of NB 1080 (my newest shoe that will likely become my daily trainer moving forward).5 -

PS: sorry to hear about all your toe issues. Guessing this is something that's a lot worse for women than men!
I think it mostly just the sample we have here. Quite a few more women than men. My feet are pretty bulletproof. Never lost a toenail, never had an ingrown, don’t get blisters. I have a bruise on 1 of my big toenails, the first I’ve ever had, as a souvenir of Dopey weekend. Not a surprise with all those miles in just 4 days. It’s growing out and I won’t lose the toenail.
ETA: Just saw the bit where you meant that it bothered women more than men. I imagine there are women runners who care more than others. A lot of the ones I know don’t worry about it too much.1 -

That’s so interesting that a brooks shoe fits your narrow high arched feet well. In general Brooks have one of the wider toe boxes on the market. It’s one of the reasons I liked them so much initially. My feet swell quite a bit in the heat, especially on longer runs and the Brooks never feel tight. By comparison, I have been given several pair of Saucony to try on over the years and every one of them are too narrow. I can feel the edges of the insole just standing there.

I haven’t been out to our place in the hill country since this storm blew through to assess the damage. The weather report for that area had 40-50 mph winds with 80 mph gusts. We already had so many downed branches from the last freeze/ice storm that we haven’t finished cleaning up. Who knows how many extra branches came down. We’ll find out in a week or so.
@shanaber That is a beautiful area!!
@eleanorhawkins @shanaber I am really fair so I’m usually the one in the family making everyone else put on sunscreen. I think one of the many reasons I prefer winter running is less exposed skin to sunblock! That post-run sweat mixed with sunscreen is a particularly gross feeling.
@eleanorhawkins Sorry to hear life is stressful for you right now. It’s good you have an outlet in running as well as some friends to share it with.
@quilteryoyo What a nice tribute run. Those long treadmill runs are so hard mentally.2 -

@martaindale - I find it interesting that you think Brooks are wider. I have always found them too narrow. they always have the cutest patterns and special editions of the Ghost and I think ohh I am going to try those again, but nope they seriously pinch my feet. I actually bought a pair years ago thinking I could somehow make them work for me. Good thing REI has a great return policy!1 -
March total: 13.2/100 miles
3/4: 13.2 miles
Thanks to all of you for the well wishes and congratulations for my HM yesterday!
Conditions yesterday were really good for racing, upper 40’s at the start and just creeping into the upper 50’s at the finish. While this course isn’t my favorite, the race is really well organized and run. It’s a good size, not as big as a major (about 3500 runners for the marathon and HM plus a few hundred more for the 10k) but attracts a handful of elites every year. If I didn’t live here I’d probably like the course more but for me it just feels like running through my neighborhood. I do like that I can wake up at 5am after sleeping in my own bed, eat breakfast, park within a half mile of the start, and be in the corrals by 6:15 for a 6:50 start.
They have the corrals separated for the marathon and HM with 2 corrals for each group, separated by the road median. The 10k starts last. They keep the 2 groups separated for the first couple of miles before the course merges. It works well to allow the fastest of both distances get out front and settled into their paces without having to weave. Honestly, I wish more races did this. The one thing I think they could improve is organizing the individual corrals with little signs of different finish times. It’s hard to corral yourself properly because you don’t know how fast the people around you are.
I was too far up in the corral so got caught up at the start and went out too fast. First 2 miles were 9:17 and 9:11. As the field loosened up I slowed down and hit the next several miles closer to my target pace (10 miles all between 9:27 and 9:44). At one point the 4:15 marathon pace group passed me. That should have been about my target pace for the HM so I tried to stick with them for a bit but they were going way faster than a 4:15 pace, probably 10-15 secs a mile too fast so I let them go. I knew I couldn’t hold that pace for too long and didn’t want to run out of steam before the end. Heading onto the last mile I gave it what I had left. Mile 13 was 9:21 and the last quarter mile was an 8:48 pace. Did better with the tangents, only over by a little over a tenth.
I was DONE when I crossed the finish, felt like I was about to vomit until I caught my breath and got my HR back down, but I know that just meant I really gave it what I had. Got my medal, shirt and some food then found a shady spot to sit and eat. They have decent post-race food for a larger race. Bananas, oranges, granola bars, choice of breakfast taco or fried chicken tenders, and plenty of drink options including my personal favorite - chocolate milk.
I ate, stretched, then headed back to my car cheering for the marathoners still on the course as I went.
I’m really happy with how I did. I beat my old PR by 2:09! I’m inching closer to a sub 2hr HM. I hope I’m able to get there in another year or 2.
The reason I have been MIA for a bit. It’s been a rough few days and I wouldn’t blame anyone for not wanting to hear about my kid’s problems. If you don’t want to know me too well or want to keep it light, don’t read it.My kid has been palming their meds and took several of them after we went to bed tuesday night. My husband woke them up on Wednesday and after some questioning they admitted what they did. So, another trip to the ER where we spent 2 days making sure they were medically ok and finding an inpatient psych facility to admit them. It’s depressing that beds are actually hard to come by as they are basically full all the time. We got lucky that they didn’t take any more than they did. They had a lot more stashed. Several hours passed between when they took the meds and when we woke up and I hate to think how bad things might be right now if they had taken any more. They have been admitted for a couple of days now and probably won’t be home for several more days, hopefully in a better mental place than they were going in.
I want to thank all of you for being here. This running group provides support in so many ways and it helps a lot to have an outlet for the stress.12
