WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JUNE 2023

Would love some support on my weight loss journey. Prior to the start of the pandemic I had lost 90#. Put it all back on and then some. May last year I started again and got down 47#. Then my mom passed away and I lost all my will power and gained quite a bit back. I’m back on track since March and have lost 28#. Slow and easy. Walking more now that my hip is bothering less. Going to be stressful as it appears on a new scan that my husbands cancer has likely spread further into his spine. More testing in a couple weeks to confirm, then I believe he’ll start radiation. Need to maintain what control I have by keeping on track with my eating and walking. Before that, my husband and I will be going on vacation to Lake George where we’ve rented an RV for 10 days. Lots of outdoor time and great waking trails.
I hope you have had a great weekend.
Welcome. This is a great place to come for support and encouragement. I started MFP at age 62 when I thought I was a lifetime failure at weight control. What I found out was that logging food and exercise every day was a good beginning to a plan that works. By being part of this thread and reading and posting every day, I got new ideas about how to make my plan become a new lifestyle. I sought every opportunity to be active so I burn more calories. I learned about nutrition so I can create meals with the most nutrition for the fewest calories. I eat almost the same thing every day which helps lower my need to obsess about food. I've lost 50 pounds and kept it off for several years.
My husband has major health problems and we deal with them one day at a time.
We'd love it if you signed with a name or nickname and a location to make your posts more personal. You can use a fake name and a very general location if you are concerned about privacy.

Margaret-very nicely said-wonderful reminders.
Annie-just because you may beaver cals for the day doesn't mean you are over for the week. It is not one day that makes us gain a pound.
Barbie-I actually enjoyed both series to which you referred but I agree, some elements are not for everyone. I feel the same about "The Great" on Hulu. Very loosely based on history, profanity, violence, sex but I found it extremely funny. I have friends who would be shocked by it-so I always give careful notice about shows I recommend.
Off to check out two more communities!
Take care all,

Ladies, thank you all for movie recommendations! I will check some of these out! Machka, we don't rent movies because I pay too much every month for Comcast. My contract ends this Fall and I will have to renegotiate prices again.
Margaret ~ Your wise words are welcome and a good reminder to us all!
Wishing every single one of you a good day!

Margaret, I have always wanted to grow daisies but have never been successful. When I was growing up, there were always daisies blooming around the well house behind our home. I loved them.

I hope your trip is amazing, Heather.
I packed this weekend. I am taking hiking poles, just in case. I can't fall, and since I had my quarterly xgeva shot last week, I've been incredibly stiff and my hips are twitchy. Oncologist said I could go off Ibrance for the trip, but I'm going to stick with it. She gave me all kinds of food advice. Being reminded of the dangers of salad bars was good to hear. I sometimes let my guard down when it comes to food prep safety.
Nephrologist appointment this morning. My kidneys looked great on the most recent CT, but my creatinine was high. I think I'm still dehydrated, despite my best efforts to drink lots of water.
Got a few walks in this weekend. It was unseasonably cool. There were reports of funnel clouds in our valley yesterday, which is quite unusual. I saw a picture of one in my news feed last night. Very ropey.
Take care. I apologize for any comments I made which stirred the pot.
I'm still in awe about the turkey chick. What a precious thing.

Have you seen A Man Called Otto with Tom Hanks on Netflix? Poignant, sad, sweet, uplifting…and Tom Hanks!!!

Oh! I see Barbie and I posted about the same movie.
And I had to laugh - when Covid happened, I watched Breaking Bad all the way through - twice! Rewatching, I enjoyed the nuances and details I missed the first time through. It is violent and just wrong in so many ways. LOL. I haven’t watched all of Better Call Saul, just the first 4 seasons I think.

Let me say this again in a dedicated post:
I truly appreciate the diligent efforts to keep this thread true to Barbie’s original intentions. Even when I don’t post much, I am reading along, and being sustained by my friends here. Thank you all so much. Love you all.

Welcome newbies and returnees! (((hugs))) to those who need them.
I really feel strongly that I have to say this today... It's been weighing on me for a couple days and I've kept quiet, but today's the day.
Completely agree with Mary's spoiler. ALL of you should go back and read it carefully... several times. Just sayin'. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/comment/47526728/#Comment_47526728
Some of us choose to keep our mouths closed on a regular basis not to get any back-talk on this thread and some of us don't mention when others break the rules not to cause any drama. I'm a MoM. (Marine Mom) and we're TAUGHT NOT TO TRUST!!! I think Rebecca will agree with me on this point. It's really naïve of everyone here to think that everyone IS truly who they say they are! I mean sure, we all are probably who we are, but Kim was only bringing up a point the other day that we have to be careful and she got told that it was "unbecoming". IT was NOT. It was simply a point. Mary was simply copy/pasting information from one thread, within this GROUP, to another thread within this GROUP, to make a point. Truthfully, something anyone could do anywhere and beyond this group. And here's my point. We all post things here and on other threads within 50+ that we may or may not want to get out onto the WWW. So please, pay attention. As I've said before, my life's an open book. Anything I've posted here, goes out. But if you don't want it out "there", don't post it here either, because you DON'T know (for certain) who everyone is.
Alright, I'm done.

I love Breaking Bad for so many reasons. Not the least of which is the color purple, "rocks," and the ribbon Saul wears far longer than is reasonably expected because it's good for his image. So many funny bits. I haven't yet watched Better Call Saul, but my children have told me that I will love it as much.
We don't watch that many movies, honestly, I'm not sure why. Currently we are watching Endeavor (very dark) and Jonathan Creek (light-hearted, mystery is not always a murder). We are slogging our way through Carnival Row, but it is so dark that we can watch an episode only once every few weeks. . . or months. Still, I love the fantasy bits and the characters are interesting. And Orlando Bloom.
Love that painting, Karen. Thank you for sharing your brother's work.

Good afternoon ladies!
On the subject of internet identities, there was a character in a game I used to play who said she was a sixteen year old girl. It turned out "she" was not one, but TWO retired male Canadian hockey players. The wide world is a fascinating place.
So far today, I have ignored the pie. I told Dad he had three days to eat the rest of it.
I have been reconsidering salt on my daily chicken portion. It would do me good to drop that.
Wishing you all well,

Good morning ladies.
I watched Breaking Bad too and enjoyed it. Another Netflix series I watched was called You….it was very good.
Happy to read about the wild turkey chick rescue and outcome. So nice to see people concerned about animal welfare.
Good to read that the recent drama appears to be over on this thread with just the occasional dig that I skim over.
Had our organic inspection on Saturday and everything went very well. Always get a bit anxious just before. Not sure why as we have never had an issue. Having worked for the provincial government a number of years in the past I am used to paperwork and form filling. Inspector complimented us on our yard which was nice to hear. We planted some of the trees 50 years ago from small seedlings so they are now huge….also liked my little orchard.
Went to Edmonton yesterday to visit DD and family for Father’s Day bbq. Had a nice visit. Poured rain while there and pretty much all the way home. Have now accumulated over 3 inches at home but I’m sure Edmonton got a lot more. We were in desperate need of rain but hopefully it knows when to quit. Standing water now on some of the fields will cause some damage.
Enjoy your day ladies.

After reading Gretchen Rubin's books about happiness, I wrote my own happiness commandments. I've shared them before but for new people, I'm sharing them again.
Barbie's Happiness Commandments
Be Barbie
Lighten up
Do it now
Dance more
Choose strategy over willpower
Cultivate an attitude of gratitude
Come from a place of love
Stay in the moment
Act the way you want to feel
Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good
Don't expect praise or recognition
It is what it is
Don't take things personally
Treat yourself like a toddler
What's fun for other people may not be fun for you, and vice versa
You can choose what you do, but you can't choose what you like
Be kind, no exceptions
Ask always, how could my life be better with less?

I planted Shasta daisies last year and they are just about ready to bloom. Just one plant but looking forward to seeing it bloom.

I decided not to delete the group as a whole yet, but did quite a bit of cleanup. For those who would prefer to have their posts deleted from that space, please let me know. I want to emphasize again that the private group titled Women Ages 50+ and the public thread titled Women Ages 50+ for June 2023 where you are reading this post right now are two totally different things.
Joy - Thanks for sticking with the thread. In all honesty, there seems to be a spasm every third or fouth year when folks get their feathers ruffled about something, but then we go back into the usual supportive and loving interactions again. It was the driving force behind why I developed the group as being completely separate from the thread to begin with--as a sort of safety valve for those kind of communications.
Love,

there are some great salt free alternatives. I just picked up a few. Trying to lower sodium as dh has high blood pressure. Mrs.Dash has some great ones. I just got a low sodium one from McCormicks(Safeway had them on sale really cheap $1.49 with coupon)

Rebecca--So sorry about your fall. I pray you get home with least amount of pain as possible.
Betsy--Sounds like a good trip and spreading Jack's ashes at this family pasture sounds so peaceful and a beautiful place.
Mary-- I feel asking for and sending prayers is ok as no one is pushing and if it is something that someone else doesn't believe they can just pass.
Lisa--You handled the snake a lot better than I would of. If it was me you more than likey would of heard me scream from Nebraska. LOL.
Flea--What an exciting adventure with the island, be interesting to see just what they can do with it.
Happy ending to the turkey story.
Well it was not a good weekend. Soon as I got home Friday evening I got sick and didn't go far from the bathroom all weekend. I do think I got a touch of the stomach virus DH has last week. I bought extra clothes to work today "just in case"
Had my first interview this morning and she said all the right things and I told her the hours and that it means working nights at times to fill in when needed I told her to think about it and let me know in a couple days. I do not think she will take it for the pay. But will see what happens next.

Margaret - beautiful flowers and gorgeous vase! I don't have any nice vases but one like that, I'd pay money for. I'm not a flower person other than if it's a perennial and all I have to do is look at it and prune it every couple years, that's for me. I currently have honeysuckle and mock orange smelling up the back yard, lol. Peonies and orange poppies used to thrive in some beds, but no longer. Sorry to hear about Drew's continuing health conditions, but you are learning so much about nutrition that also applies to humans and sharing with us. Thank you.
Carol - we have daisies all over the place, they seem to grow wild.
Barbie - love your happiness commandments. And Machka's Strong people list. It helps to have constant reminders about how to gain control over our day and not get bogged down. It might have been Heather or Machka who posted a meme about boundaries that I really needed to pay attention to and has been helpful. And this one about things you don't need to feel guilty about:
Joy - so glad to hear the organic certification when thru without a hitch. Has the smoke cleared up for you folks in eastern Canada and the US? Those of us in the Pacific Northwest could be facing the same by the end of the summer - sure hope not. Last week when we had a few very hot windy days, some gal was going around in a town nearby setting fires. Luckily was caught in the act and stopped. Not sure if she hadn't been taking meds or was in a drugged up mental state.
Got a call from the auction place this morning, they'll be out in a few weeks to pick up the drums and musical instruments I'm selling. And a friend who wants a little starter drum set will come pick up her equipment on Sunday. I will finally be able to get the heated and carpeted shop office set up for an exercise room. Due to the weather and circumstances with DH's illness, my little weight room has moved from the potting shed to various rooms in the house in the past few years. A jumble. It sure helps to have everything in one spot, set and ready to go. Not sure if I want to put a treadmill out there, rowing machine, standing elliptical or what.
So, I'm following those of you who use equipment with keen interest.
Annie - you with your new bike and how you've taken to it. Really look forward to the updates on what exercises you do each day. Barbara too. Michele's daily exercise DVD's. Others of you who share your routines. All good.
Heather - you and your rowing machine, as an example. An elderly neighbor down the street, who is now in her 90's, used her rowing machine a lot. I have spoken to her in a few years but she was one of the healthiest older gals I knew. She had a huge garden, big blueberry patch, and was always out in her yard weeding and moving. She was kind of a "cranky" gal but in a way, my hero. Good role model for how to age well.
Welcome new gals - and as Barbie said, if you would sign your posts with a name or nickname and and location - even general area helps us keep track of who's who.
I'm in SW WA State and on good days can see both Mt. Rainer and Mt. St. Helens east of me when I go out for my walks. For a flatland Indiana farm girl, I'm still always awestruck and feel very privileged.
OK ladies, make it a wonderful week!

Vicki - I was screaming inside my head like an air raid siren when I saw that snake, I promise you. I grew up in Deep East Texas, and saw rattlesnakes, copperheads, coral snakes and cotton-mouth water moccasins growing up, as well as chicken snakes, which could be as big around as your biceps and more than six feet long. Of that list, only the chicken snakes were non-vemonous.
A couple stories from my country past, probably completely inappropriate in light of Debbie's rescue, sorry:I was probably ten years old, so more than 50 years ago, and my sister and I were playing on the back porch. Mama was out in the chicken yard, where we kept a dozen chickens and half a dozen of the big, white turkeys. She had gone out there to gather eggs, and saw one of those big old chicken snakes in the hen-house. She ran in the house, and on the way in, she told my sis and me to stay on the porch. She went flying inside, grabbed the four-ten shotgun, and ran back out. She was bent over peering into the hen house, trying to get a bead on the snake, when the big tom turkey came up behind her and pecked her on the butt. She swung around and just barely missed that big old bird when the shotgun in her hand went off. She just sighed, put another shell in the shotgun, turned back around and blew the snake's head right off. Tough lady.
Less funny, but still very country--I was home on leave from the Air Force, so probably 20 years old, if that. Mama and I were out in the front yard of her little house when we saw a raccoon come out of the tree line. It was kinda staggery, and weaving back and forth. She said to me, "Go get my pistol, that thing's got rabies." Got back out there, and the coon was still slowly moving toward the house. When I tried to hand her the pistol, she looked at me and said, "Well shoot it, then." I hit that dang thing with that .22 pistol three times (swear), and it never stopped staggering toward us. She gave me a disgusted look, grabbed a shovel leaning against the house, and went and hit the thing in the head with it, just dropped it in its tracks. And then she made me take the raccoon out in the woods and bury the dang thing with the same shovel. Like I said. Tough.
Bon voyage, Heather! Hope it's a wonderful cruise for you both.
Corey's off to the grocery store... really enjoying having him home for four days. He woke up rested this morning, which is nice to see for a change. He has such a hard time going to sleep before 10 or 11, and gets up just past 4:30 for work every weekday.
Before the day got so hot, I got his request for Father's Day/birthday/anniversary present in the oven. He wanted brownies. And not just brownies, but brownies with chocolate cream cheese icing. While I love a good brownie, icing ruins them as far as I'm concerned, so there's no fear of me indulging in them.
Hope it's a good day for everyone,
Love from Arkansas,
Lisa

Debbie that's a good thought on the salt alternate. I bet my mom has some stashed in with the spices. And yes the turkey chick was cute!
Vicki sorry you were ill. Hope you get a new hire soon.
Lanette yes I love my simple bike. Was it Tracey that first recommended it? It is a leg only machine, but that works for me because of my dumbbell routine. And I could always pick up dumbbells or wrist weights while on the bike. It is so much smaller than the gym rowing machines. And I can really break a sweat without feeling like I'm dying. The music keeps my speed up. My model is less adjustable than some, but it fits my short legs and long torso.
But of course someday when I grow up I want to try a Peloton. I like to have a trainer encourage me; it's surprisingly effective even on a tape. I hope you find the machine(s) that works for you!

June 2023 Happiness
Word of the year: Appreciate : today I appreciate my DH making me lunch. We used to raise turkeys! They are fun. We had one that was a pet. It followed my DH everywhere. Once when he was working on something. ‘Tom Turkey’ came over to watch him and ate all the nuts and bolts! DH was not happy. I thought it was hilarious! All turkeys we eaten in the end…..17. Take time to notice things that you find beautiful. Will do! Watched people enjoying the lake on a beautiful Saturday!
Turkey chicks sometimes get mixed up with the regular chicks and if the seller is not up on the animals (a new person) they can get mixed in the buckets and the customer gets a turkey. If I had chickens I would of kept it because they are a lot more expensive than chickens and raised it with the others. But if someone didn’t want the turkey, well that may be how it came to be where it was. It could have been a wild turkey too. Glad you found a place to give it and thanks for taking care of it so well!

1. Decide to look for what’s good every day this month. Started with friendly people.
2. Say positive things in your conversations with others. I will try, but people annoy me.
3. Re-frame a worry and try to find a helpful way to think about it. This will be about my son. Not sure how to re-frame it but will find a way today. I must realize he is a full grown man and in charge of his own life.
4. Take a photo of something that brings you joy and share it.
5. Think of 3 things you’re grateful for and write them down. 1. My family, 2. A roof over my head, 3. Enough food to eat.
6. Get out into green space and feel the joy that nature brings. every day!
7. Do something healthy that makes you feel good. 2 walks so far. And therapist today.
8. Find joy in music: sing, play, dance, listen or share. To be accomplished.
9. Ask a friend what made them happy recently. Did this on my trip to Lubbock to get my car back finally. Was a great day!
10. Bring joy to others by doing something kind for them. Will report on this later! Gave a family some Little Debbie cookies.
11. Eat good food that makes you happy and really savor it. Will do! Yesterday had a salad made from lettuce, onion, peppers, and tomato from my garden. The dressing was homemade too! Mmmmmm
12. Write a gratitude letter to thank someone. To be done! Sent my GS a thank you note for being my grandchild!
13. Take a light-hearted approach. Choose to see the funny side. Already happening after a very stressful day yesterday.
14. Share a happy memory with someone who means a lot to you. Will do.
15. Look for something to be thankful for where you least expect it. This will be fun to find things. How about turtle eggs on the beach that have to be moved to not be crushed.
16. Speak to others in a warm and friendly manner. I will try.
18. Look for something good in a difficult situation. My son is getting help from a social worker who is including me.
19. Get outside and find the joy in being active.Too hot today, 105 degrees at 1;45 pm!20. Rediscover and enjoy a fun childhood activity.
21. Send a positive note to a friend who needs encouragement.
22. Watch something funny and enjoy how it feels to laugh.
23. Create a playlist of uplifting songs to listen to.
24. Bring to mind a favorite memory you feel grateful for.
25. Show your appreciation to people who are helping others
26. Make time to do something playful just for the fun of it.
27. Be kind to you. Do something that brings you joy.
28. Notice how positive emotions are contagious among people.
29. Share a friendly smile with people you see today.
30. Make a list of the joys in your life and keep adding to it.

Tough.
Hope it's a good day for everyone,
Love from Arkansas,
Lisa
Sounds like my mom. She did shoot a rattle snake once and I am sure she has shot other things.
I have killed a few rats with a trowel and drowned a few. Dh just yells for me and can't understand how I can do it. Ummm, I don't want rats around and I want them to die instantly. Better than on a glue trap or something like that.
