Michele-I agree with you about being upset someone posted your phone number in a public forum without your permission. However, the people who rely on landlines are pretty much becoming the n the minority-cell phones are the legitimate alternative if not the only means of contact. We got rid of our landline 9 or so years ago. We couldn't see spending the money for both services.
Lisa-thanks for handling-I think I am going to copy and save the instructions! And yes-I was asking about heating for the sun room. Propane stove sounds like perfect solution!
Pip-you come up with the coolest decorating ideas.
At this early hour it seems that stomach stuff has calmed down. At least those body aches have subsided and I haven't had the "pins and needles" pain in stomach for a while. A bit of restless sleep last night as it was leaving. If you ladies get any symptoms-please learn from Heather and I-rest and let yourself heal. Work colleague said he still wasn't feeling 100% after 4 days of it (but then, no one ever got a cold as bad as my husband
Will leave work early today to make up on things I missed doing yesterday. Need to have a monthly meeting with a staff member (should not be fun) and quick meeting with my executive team-mainly giving them Christmas presents since I will be out until 21st. Tomorrow I get a massage at 11. DIL pushed it-said it may help with some of the arthritis pain (but won't hurt). Also, hotel has indoor pool and I am hoping a hot tub. Have dinner with brothers Tuesday evening and lunch with two coworkers (actually bosses, but we are also friends) for our birthdays on Wednesday-then pick up kids at airport!
Need to get stretches in-missed them for two days while sick.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio
I keep talking to dh about dropping our landline- no one we want to talk to ever calls on it. Huge waste of money.
For mom, cell service is spotty at best where she is so she depends on her landline and it has been terrible since the fires a few years ago(two years in a row the big fires came very close to their house, the last one was right across the street at the neighbors back door and behind them. It was so hot, it warped the roof of my parents green houses.- anyways- mom was without land line for months at a time at least 2 times that I know of, other times, weeks without it. Winter time is the worst- water is getting in the line or something. They have come out to repair it and it is good a week or so then bad. She now has the direct line to the guy that worked on it the last time.
I wish she could drop it- the spam callers are terrible. Worse than at our house.

Landlines: our rental house has phone jacks but none of them work correctly. Something about them "daisy chained". Rental company stated they would not fit it as " no one has land lines anymore ". Our 1957 black rotary phone is upstairs and she's plugged into our modem. Its louder than our answering machine phone which is also plugged into the modem. The sad thing is that our rotary phone doesn't dial out because we dont have an adaptor yet. The dialing is the best part! We have a phone table to go with her.💖. Here's my youngest in 2016 when we had just gotten the phone and table. We were teaching our son he had to SIT DOWN when using the phone. If not, he would just yank it off the table!

Betsy - glad to hear your sis and her husband will be visiting for Christmas. BIL rebuilding your stairs sounds like a great Christmas present!
Ginny- glad you are feeling better. A massage sounds great and can't hurt.
Sue - I am so happy you mentioned the stall pellets - I stopped in at Tractor Supply this morning and will get a bag of them for the run - I didn't have the Sube and no way I was lifting 40# out of the trunk of the car. I think they'll be fine. Give the girls something to scratch around in and can kind of turn into soil.
Pip - do you think you were an interior decorator in a previous life? You and Kirby sure have an eye for it.
Heather - so sorry to hear about your friend's granddaughter and diabetes. Sounds like she'll be in good care.
Vickie - hope you are on the road to recovery. Some of these bugs seem hard to shake. So happy to see you back with us!!
Michele and KJ - I'm with you keeping a landline. In my case, it's the "junk collector" phone number that I give out when I have to give a number I hope no one ever calls, knowing it could spark another rash of telemarketers. I rarely get calls on my cell - only a few people have that number, sometimes texts - mostly use it to check emails and messaging when I'm in town if I'm expecting something. And I have it for emergencies. People know to email or message me as I check this often throughout the day. Otherwise, I often forget to turn the cell on. Someone once told me after years of working at 911 and as a receptionist answering phone calls all day at other jobs, I'll never want to talk on the phone again. I think they were right. Of course, everyone has different phones for different reasons, so whatever works for us is great!

MFP Weekly Check-in for December 11, 2023
Debbie in Napa Valley, CA -Finally weighed this morning- 152.6 Nice to see it going back down, even after over a week of non stop candy making and not weighing for the past couple weeks.
Rita in Roswell NM - Lost 2 pounds this week. Hope it keeps going in that direction!
Lanette in SW WA State – again, weight holding very steady in the healthy range. Still daily walking with weights three times a day after meals, eating protein first at each meal whenever possible. Nuts are my go-to snack.

I am working on Christmas gift ideas for friends and relatives from me and from Mom. I try not to eat candy so I feel awkward giving it, but Mom seems to think it's the default this year.
Mom is mostly keeping up, her decline is very slow. She is still going up the stairs at night. She keeps asking about getting rid of the hospital bed.
I think I volunteered to do a Christmas breakfast at our house. I said we could have some pastries. Which means coffee and tea and maybe an egg casserole thingie. It really is our turn, and mom can't go anywhere, and it can't be as hard as I fear.
Anyway today I just have to order presents.
Have a great day,
Annie in Delaware

Awww thx! I do get a lot of ideas. I have the vision and kirby does the grunt work that I can’t do myself.5 -
Hi Gals,
Such a busy time for me…. Everyone is suddenly remembering that they want something embroidered for the holiday. But those folks who plan ahead gave me enough business that I was full for delivery by Christmas by Nov. 1 ! So I am living and breathing my sewing machine.
I do have a big stack of stuff for January, which is great as January is usually a slow month, so it should be a good start to 2024.
Lanette – sounds like you figured out another option for dry chicken feet… but I have done a couple of things when I was managing chickens - one was the tubes stuffed with straw used on construction sites – they sell them at the big box hardware stores I have put them around the outside of the run/coop to create a dam to keep the water out… then on the inside wooden pallets (often can be gotten for free) with straw or wood chips to keep them 3-4 inches off the mud.
Landline phones – I still have one, mostly because it might be helpful during the aftermath of a bad earthquake. Most everyone has and calls me on my cell phone number, I use the one number for work and personal.
Debbie – good job on standing up to MIL – you might have to do it a bunch of times before she hears. Are they undergrounding the powerlines in your mom’s area?
Annie – hang in there! Does mom want you to make candy or buy? While just buying boxes of candy can be easy, some pretty, small gift bags with a jar of jam/local honey/specialty mustard or oil could be nice too. I don’t know where in Delaware you are but it looks like there are quite a few natural food/farm markets in the state – maybe there is one nearby.
Boundaries – they are a good thing, and we each have different needs for boundaries in different situations, one size doesn’t fit all.
Pip – once again you made an adorable option instead of the boring. I think Lanette was right you were an artist/interior designer in a previous life.
Love ya all,
Kim in N. California

We each have cell phones but we depend on our land line because we tend to never hear the cell phone ring. Must say we get a lot of spam calls but our carrier has gotten good about showing that it is spam. We use the cell phones to text and to receive codes to get to online accounts.
Kim ~ I know you are very busy but I guess it will keep your income going well. Try to find a bit of time to relax a tiny bit.
Your advice to Lanette to use the pipes to catch rain run offs sounds good.
Pip ~ I agree with the others that you really have a talent for decorating.
I have gotten bummed out with Walmart. Ordered an electric frying pan for my son. It seemed very expensive ($100+ to get it mailed). They did not ship it until a few weeks after it was ordered and then they sent an email saying it had been delivered. Only problem was that it was not there (porch pirates or USPS drivers not delivering to right address). Complained to Walmart and they were absolutely no good about getting me a refund. Ordered the exact same thing from Amazon and it was $50 cheaper and arrived within days. Guess I learned my lesson!

I still have a landline and never answer it. It rings with spam calls several times a day.
I remember the pink princess phones with the long cords. I rather miss those!
Heather: I am taking to heart what you are saying about resistence training. Walking outside at my college campus does not seem to work. I think doing home videos with resistance bands and other exerices added inis more productive.
Lanette: Walking 3 times a day after meals. That is impressive. I don't seem to have the energy. I also am pre-occupied with picking up the house. I wonder if the house is too much for me. I am tired of laundry and want to cut back the number of outfits I wear.
My WW ends this month and I initially was down 5 pounds to 185 but now i am up to 191. And I have clothes stewn about that don't fit. I am very frustrated. I am exercising less and less because I am tired. I found walking videos with other exercise...one for each day in December and I want to do them but am too tired. I slept all afternoon and could go back asleep again now. I slept much of yesterday. I don't feel ill. I do have eye strain and am waiting for new glasses and contacts to come in. I don't feel especially depressed though this is the first Holiday season without my husband. I just can't seem to get anything accomplished. I don't have that much to do to get ready for the holidays. I just can't seem to do it.
My thyroid is fine they say. Someone told me it could be my adrenals from all the stress.
Sorry to be such a downer. In my head I am ready to do many things!
Best,
Rosemarie from Georgia12 -

Kim -You are a peach!! I saw those straw tubes when I was online the other day.... I see H Depot has them, I will pick up a roll to have on hand. I was thinking as I cleaned out some stinky heavy wet straw from their run yesterday.... sandbags might have worked, but they are so heavy and where would I store them? Thanks so much for reminding me!
Also, you're right on the money about Landlines and Cells with Earthquakes. When our area had the Nisqually earthquake, the cell service was "out of whack" for several hours - our 911 Center was getting calls for Seattle and we're 100 miles south. Either the towers were out of true or the central phone company office was simply overwhelmed. It could happen again.
Carol - what a mess with Walmart. Did you put it on a credit card? If so, maybe they can help.
Lanette3 -
Lanette – that tree speaks YOU
Maureen – WB
barbie – truthfully, a lot of times I just plain forget to check for voicemail messages. It’s just so much easier for me if people call the house.
Ginny – I realize that most people use their cell phones, not landlines. But not everyone. I use my cell phone down in FL. But it just annoys me that someone posted my personal information without my consent. Something like that should never be done. The reason we have a landline and cell phones is mainly because if the cell phone towers go out (which happens), we’re without a phone. And sometimes it’s out for a long time
KJ – I’m sorry your grandmother passed, but it seems she passed doing something she loved, and that’s so important
Carol – I’d just like a new (larger) patent leather belt for that costume. This one will do, but I’d like one a little larger (oh, how I hate saying that). My MIL made the Christmas tree in the background of the pic of me in the elf costume. Vince wasn’t sure he wanted to put it up this year, but I felt we had to since MIL made it.
Allie – I was going thru my “friends” on MFP yesterday and see it’s been something like 7 months since Katla logged in so I sent her a message saying that we missed her and hope everything’s OK. ROTF...seems you party and go to funerals. Is that all you do?????? lol
To the person who suggested cardboard to keep frost off windshield (I can’t remember exactly who but they used to live in CT. Maybe it was Rita?), I got out an old cardboard sunshield. I’m going to try it tomorrow since they’re not calling for rain.
Annie – a Christmas breakfast won’t be much work at all. It’ll go just fine
Debbie – maybe your mom should have a cell phone and the landline. Sounds like there are problems with each so if one isn’t working, maybe the other one will
Kim – “people suddenly remember they want something embroidered for Christmas”. Do you know that I gave this lady these pieces to put together in a quilt (because I absolutely hate quilting) late LAST YEAR and I STILL don’t have the quilt. I told her we were going to FL in January (not exactly the truth, but I want to be sure I have it in time) and she SAID she’d have it, or at least she implied she would
Had our Christmas party at bowling and also celebrated the December birthdays. Then took a walk around the neighborhood. Ceramics tonight

One of the best decisions we ever made was to get rid of our land line. Cell phones are easy to turn on and off or silence. Annoying numbers can be blocked and they are useful for so many other things6

KJ: Sincere Condolences for the loss of your grandma. Sounds like she passed happy, doing something she loved.
Annie: A Christmas breakfast is a good option.

Carol, absolutely contest the Walmart charge on your credit card. They should make that right. I currently have an order from Amazon that is “lost”. When I try to cancel for a refund, it just sends me back to my orders. I need to try to cancel it from a different device. A good three months ago I ordered a black and a white tank top from Amazon. The black one came immediately. The white one was delayed, then lost. The seller asked me if I wanted a refund or a replacement tank. I said I wanted the tank. They said ok, and a new one came a week or so later. Today I got another one. The return address said Jesus and an address in Ohio. I also ordered a stocking stuffer from the Tik Tok shop for my daughter. It was only $5.99 to begin with. I got a message saying it had been delayed in shipping so here is a $5 credit to use in the shop. The item is already here in her stocking. Shipping is just crazy this time of year.
Machka, cute top. I like the pink. I have a hard time distinguishing between warm or cool colors, so I just wear what I like.

Thank you for all of the condolences on my grandmother passing. I should have noted that she passed away in 1995. I was mainly commenting about how staying active is so important to physically aging well. Her cabin had no running water and no electricity. She had to work a large pump on the sink in the kitchen to get water. She had a garden every year, she foraged for everything you can imagine on 160 acres that she owned at the cabin. All kinds of mushrooms, but mainly Morel mushrooms, all kinds of berries, apples, maple sap/maple syrup, ramps...She would can/freeze goods for herself and family, make maple syrup and maple candies/sugar, and then sell the rest of the goods in town. She made a good living off her land. She also had a doe and buck permit and also a bear and an elk permit. When she was in her 20s, she was the first woman in Michigan to get an elk permit and shoot an elk. lol She was a go-getter for sure. I wish I had known her as a more mature adult; I was 28 when she passed away.

Rosemarie - I wonder if your lack of energy is still hanging around after your bout with Covid? Sometimes it takes a person quite a while to get energy back after that. You may want to check with your doc to see if there's something going on if it continues.
Initially, I started out walking once a day after one meal. 10 minutes. After a few days of that, I decided I could walk after 2 meals then it was easy to add in another. Then I started adding 2# weights. I'm now up to 3# and sometimes 5# if my shoulder isn't hurting.
Dr. Matt and others kept saying how good walking was for burning glucose right after eating. My HA1C had gone from 5.2 to 5.7 in the past 2 years and I decided to get that under control. That's the reason I started to walk.
I decided carrying weights would make my arm muscles work too and burn more glucose. I keep my weights on a little table in the kitchen, so they are right there looking at me as I put my plate in the sink.
I was able to plan my route either walking in the house or up and down my little street when the weather was good. I kept telling myself, just ten minutes at a time. And if it's only 5 minutes, no big deal and that's perfectly fine. The main thing was... I got up and did something. I didn't carry weights when I was "street walking".
It's now a habit and I look forward to it. Sometimes I feel so good I'll go a couple more "laps" and walk 15 minutes. Sometimes I even rush through my meal so I can grab the weights and march, lol. And sometimes I don't carry the weights. A couple days ago my hip hurt and I only did 5 minutes. I am in charge of what I want to do as long as I put on my walking shoes.
I think it helps with my energy, I really do. Maybe it's mostly psychological - that I accomplished something when I really just wanted to go back to bed, lol. Or maybe it's that my body is getting in better shape and my brain is getting some endorphins. I keep thinking about what I read the other day "exercise isn't an anti-depressant, but lack of exercise is a depressant."
Is there something you do anyhow, like dancing? If you find something, just start small. If you miss a day, you miss a day. 5 minutes one day, 2 minutes the next = it's good for our brains to change things up a little. You be in charge. Not some lady on a video, lol. Do as much as you have energy for.
There are gals here in this group that dance for exercise. Is there a station with some peppy 90's music that you can dance or walk around your living room to the beat? Most songs are 2-3 minutes long. A couple of those a day can get a person's blood circulating. "Rockin around the Christmas Tree" is a popular these days. A little swaying and finger snappin'. Sing along if you want!

I hope this helps. I don't mean to preach. We wish you the all best. Sending (((hugs)))).

KJ – absolutely wonderful TV clip. The only bad part is that it doesn’t cover all the other wonderful things you do for the kids. You certainly didn’t sound like a crazy person
Lanette – you have a really wonderful take on exercise. I do find that when I walk outdoors, I feel – for lack of a better word – happy. Invigorated. I really like walking outdoors. Only there are sometimes when I just can’t (like if it’s raining out).
I’m trying putting the cardboard on my windshield. We shall see how it goes tomorrow morning.

Ditto! My husband and I both watched the clip. You're liable to have a kabillion egg cartons before you're done! You looked wonderful, very put together, and they did a good job of editing the kid clatter down to the point where you could be heard. Well done, Kelly!2 -
