How easy it is to gain weight back
I gained about 11 lbs since my lowest recorded weight of 178 lbs And now I'm kicking myself but can't find the motivation to get back into my routine that lead me to lose 40 lbs...
You can do it! Start with diet and water intake!
Remember how good it felt at that lower weight??5 -

I haven't self-sabotaged myself YET this time but it's always in the back of my mind. I am terrified that once I get to my weight goal, I will gain everything (or at least, a great portion of it) back because that's what I've always done.
Nobody told me that losing weight can be a huge challenge to keep it off once goals are made, especially since this is not my first rodeo and I've always gained back what I have lost in the past. It's like I will be a huge disappointment not only to myself but to those who are supporting me. Nobody told me that it's actually frightening to get rid of my bigger clothes because what if I don't maintain and need them back? Once I get rid of them, I am committed to maintaining what I have lost and it is scary.
I have been told that dieting and life-style changes are two different things...I just didn't 'hear' it. Nobody told me that losing weight is an internal choice...not something I needed to do for approval from anyone else.19 -

I am the same way - great at losing, suck at maintaining. So I decided that "dieting" would be my new lifestyle. LOL it sounds weird, but once the pressure of a goal is gone its too easy to relax, so I need that constant goal. What I do is "relax" for one or two weeks a month, then "diet" for the others. The excess from the relaxed weeks are offset by the diet weeks and I basically maintain. Sometimes I alternate - strict week, relax week, strict week, relax week etc.
Its all a mental game - figure out how your brain works, and work with it to put yourself in charge despite the past22 -
@aylajane
Thanks for the advice. I still have a way to go before I need to worry about maintaining but will keep this in mind once my goals are met. I, too, need goals to keep on keepin' on and this sounds like a great idea.2 -
Nobody told me that my body would actually crave movement and healthy eating. Days that I don't get one or the other, I feel sluggish and sleep poorly.32
-
Nobody told me that eventually I would like the feeling of waking up hungry because I'm not stuffing myself to the gills every night.22

That motivation will come and go but by building better habits it's easier to push through the hard days because you are basically on autopilot and driving to the gym before you even have time to argue with yourself26

Have to get used to moving the chair closer to the table since their is less stomach in the way.13

@cecsav1 I totally read this as "You can't donate plates if you're under a certain weight." and I was thinking what does your weight have to do with donating plates then I proceeded to get angry at this only to realize that I just can't read. haha26 -
I'm only down 10 out of the 70lbs that i need to lose, but i already feel more confident. Today i had to wear a tank top and i was swinging my arms and moving my hips like i was all that. Lol i hope i don't get too bad when I lose 70lbs hehe.25

I found this out, so much so that one day I decided I should take a rest day...somehow I still ended up driving to the gym. Total auto pilot to drive to the gym after work.

Probably the most surprising to me is that I actually loved working out so much that I became a fitness instructor at my university. I never, ever expected that! Mostly because I used to be a super lazy *kitten*.23

They've been getting increasingly frequent and have even started to make me feel breathless. I finally went to the doctor to check it out. Turns out my heart rate and blood pressure are all fine - the doctor thinks that the amount of Diet Coke I drink (about 8-9 glasses a day) contains too much caffeine. Whilst I've lost 26% of my body weight over the last 15 months, it never occurred to me to reduce the amount of Diet Coke I've been drinking, or that caffeine would have that much more of an effect. Cold turkey here we come!!
I used to drink 6 or 7 cans of Diet pepsi a day. I cut it back to one with dinner. I call him "dinner pop" and allowing that one can a day has helped me to give up the rest.
This thread is great! As someone just starting out it is highly inspirational!16 -
The bad:
1. I lost four friends because I was losing weight. If this happens to you, let them go. If they stop being your friend because you're getting healthier then they were never your friend to begin with
2. You'll go through clothes if u have a lot to lose....meh, this isn't that bad lol
The good
1. The mirror becomes your best friend
2. It's amazing to see your own feet. You know your feet exist but you relied on faith. This time you have empirical evidence that you do have feet
3. Your self confidence explodes
4. You start to look sexy as hell in workout gear haha49 -
Everyone talks about the physical aspect of losing weight, but no one tells you about the emotional/mental health changes that go along with it, like:
-Learning to have a healthy relationship with food and not letting it rule your life.
-Overcoming eating disorders and building self esteem
-Learning to love yourself again.36 -
You can wear skirts!12

That is both awesome and funny

This thread is something I'm going to try to look at any time I need encouragement. I really appreciate the fact that someone started it up and everyone keeps on adding to it. So positive.
A good motivator for me is to fit into my clothes comfortably again so I don't have to go buy more for a while... To feel comfortable in my body whether in a bathing suit on the beach, naked in front of my lover, or walking around day to day... I want to feel good in my skin. And to avoid IBS-LIKE symptoms from binge eating and actually go a week or two without a horrible stomachache that makes me pop imodium like candies.16 -

I'm SO glad I'm not the only one!
I was honestly panicking when I first began to notice the pulse in my abdomen area! Thought I was pregnant or something, lol. My girlfriend never understood when I tried to explain it, and I couldn't find a similar thread about it on the internet.5 -

My IBS went from once or twice a week to symptom free for over six months!13 -
- That it would cost me MORE MONEY than I ever fathomed (e.g., healthy food, constant replacing of wardrobes/shoes/bras/coats/etc, going places/going out and trying new things)
- That I would pay for gym memberships at two different gyms because it makes me more happy than anything.
- That I would start to be someone who gets annoyed and judgie of other's pity parties.
- That sexy time is more fun and more better!

I know exactly what you ladies are feeling. Sometimes I ask my husband if my outfits are appropriate for a nearly 60 year old woman. I don't want to be that girl who thinks she looks hot but in reality is a hot mess.28 -
I've had the opposite happen. I was not blessed with a large bust. Even when I was 220 my bust stayed pretty much the same. Now that I'm 172, my boobs are bigger than my belly and they look a lot bigger than they did before even though they are still the same size.10 -
How good it feels when something doesn't fit (because it is to small!). Two skirts that didn't zip up now fit perfectly and a bra I purchased to small (it was pretty and they only had a size smaller then i needed hahaha) is now to big! I don't mind that my boobs have shrunk it's totally worth it hahah!
I am about 8 kilos off a healthy weight range but have now lost 6, I'm almost half way, how insane is that! Today I saw a friend who works away and he mentioned that I looked thinner and seemed a lot happier. You'll feel just as good as you look on the out, not only because you are slimmer but because you are healthier, I wish I knew how good I would feel, it keeps me motivated now. I want to keep going and keep on feeling like the best me I can be ❤️❤️❤️
Also how much money you will save not buying food out hahaha, added bonus!12 -
I'm only on day 6 so far, but this thread has been one heck of an inspiration to me. My biggest fear is loose skin, I am 6'4" and (roughly) 340 pounds so I have a metric snot ton to drop and I am terrified that I am going to look like a sharpei but that fear is not going to hold me back, thank you all for the inspiration.
Feel free to add me.
I completely understand what you mean about the loose skin. After 3 kids and gaining a total of 70 lbs over the years I am finally on the losing side. The trouble is that I have already started to see the flabby skin problem especially with me stomach. There are some outfits and dresses I have that I have to wear a girdle with not bc of fat but bc of loose skin hanging or sagging or jiggling. Anyone have any tips to help combat this problem?
Weight training helps skin snap back. Keep your skin well moisturized and hit the free weights. FYI it make take a few years for your skin to catch up with the rest of your body. Give it some time before you decide to do anything drastic like surgery.4 -

Except you now spend all that money on a new wardrobe, gym memberships, protein powder, mobility tools, etc lol.9
