Heather: I'm sorry about the lightning strike that killed your modem. I look forward to you being fully back on line. I hope your home remains flood free during this weather event. It sounds like your village is getting some significant damage. Sending good thoughts for the people in your village that are experiencing flooding. :flowerforyou:

Allie: I am so pleased that you spoke up for yourself. That took some courage and I admire you for it. Having the boss stick up for you must have been wonderful. :star:

DorothyCote: You've found a great group of women to support you on your return to better health. Welcome.

Penny: I hope you have a great time while you're visiting your family in New Hampshire. :flowerforyou:

Melanie: Welcome to a great group. It is okay to consume most of your calories for breakfast if you feel best that way & the daily total meets your goal. There is not "one right way" of doing things and everyone is different. You need to work out the best way for yourself. Portion control combined with calorie counting is the most powerful strategy for me. I tend to have a lighter breakfast, with lunch and dinner close to the same, but slightly heavier at dinner. When we travel we tend to stop at places that post calorie and nutrition information in the restaurant or online. I always use my phone to record my food because it is always with me and I don't have to try to remember later in the day. Good luck to you.

Rita: I love your system of rewarding your success. Charms prove to you that you're making progress, and you can feel them and enjoy them to put a little smile on your face! Good luck with your career choices.

Marcelynh: We used to get cooking shows from the UK, and the Hairy Bikers are a couple of guys who are great cooks. We changed TV providers and now I get to watch horses on RFD TV but I don't get British cooking shows unless they are on PBS. We live in an area where regular TV broadcast signal doesn't reach our house and we currently get satellite service. :flowerforyou:

I made an appointment for a pedicure today and also a haircut, but I really don't need the haircut so I'm going to reschedule the hair cut later on.

Cheri in Oh for now - I have these Christmas placemats that I have been working of for about 13 years. You do them in the round and I'm having SOO much trouble doing things in the round that I've been procrastinating. It's supposed to be a very easy pattern, but I just have so many problems working in the round. Wish you were closer to me. Say...on your moving to TX, maybe you could swing by NC???? Just an idea. Good luck on the move
    Michele in NC

The most important thing I have learned over the years of crocheting in the round is to use placemarkers at the beginning of each round. I have great difficulty locating the starting stitch on each round and this helps tremendously. I have several WIPs (works in progress) lurking amongst my crafting belongings.

Cheri in NE Ohio - Congrats on your husbands job at A&M! I went to Aggieland for my master's degree work, which I didn't complete due to my mother's death. Marcelyn spoke of the bonfire collapse--which happened while I was studying there, and because at the time, I was the managing editor of the small-town paper in Madisonville (about 50 miles away), I had to report on it for the paper. Worth reading up on if you can find much online--they still grieve the loss of the people who died, as well as the loss of a tradition there. And yeah, Texas Aggies can get a little crazy, especially about football, which is laden with tradition and superstition. Since I was nearly 40 by the time I was there, I escaped most of the cult-like aspects. As I was a teaching assistant in communications while I was there, and taught public speaking, I heard many a speech on "Jesus is my Quarterback, and God is our Coach" from hulking undergrads recruited for their skills on the field, not their acumen in the classroom.
    Lisa in West Texas

I’m trying not to be scared off by all this talk of the cultish atmosphere at TAMU! The hubs and I are independent, moderate liberal Jews. So….but sometimes you do things in life cause ya hafta! We are just thrilled to have the hubs employed, happy about the position, enjoying what a college campus has to offer and living somewhere where there is no winter!

#1 - don't be put off by the cult talk. It actually is school spirit on overdrive. lol If there is one thing Aggies are it is super proud of their school. That's really what it is and not a cult. They have tons of traditions and love them. And yes, you better learn to love football and buy a maroon colored shirt. lol

As to politics I would say that you will fit in fine. A & M like most state universities I know leans liberal despite the conservative nature of the state right now (TX used to be strongly Democrat so all things swing back and forth in that respect). The only thing I would say is that TX is pretty much strongly pro 2nd ammendment and even that depends upon your location in the state.

#2 - no winter..... uh..... I'll just let you experience it but I'm sure it's not like you are used to. My son ran the marathon in College Station two years ago in December with sub-zero temps and ice....

I'm betting you will love it. College Station is a nice place and only a few hours from me. Maybe we will meet. ;) We could get Lisa in west TX to come east, I go north an the others in the state can join in.... wow, we could have a jolly good time!

fanncy0626 thanks...I forgot to mention( and this may change what I should be doing) but I do walk a brisk walk each morning before getting on the road. It will always be at least 1 mile, some days as much as 2.5 miles just depends. Once that's done, I eat breakfast, and begin my day. So for your fast, do you not eat at all before 5, and you eat all your calories between 5, and 10?

    Melanie-Baton Rouge

I don't eat any food before 5 PM. I am not even hungry since I have gotten my body into this mode. It is supposed to have tremendous health benefits for ridding your body of old and damaged cells as well as prompting regeneration of new cells. I drink plenty of water until 5 PM. The nice thing about this is that if I do want to have something to eat during the day it is OK. For instance, when my children visit I don't worry about keeping that schedule so rigid.

Heather - I am also wondering what Hairy bikers are! Or if that was an auto correct!

This is for KetoneKaren . I tried sending a private message on my iPad, but it said "unknown user."

This is the orange cake recipe that my Aunt Sis always made.

1 Duncan Hines orange supreme cake mix (plus ingredients needed to make as directed, not sure of number or amounts, oil, eggs, etc.)

    2 cups sugar
    8 oz sour cream
1/4 cup frozen orange juice concentrate
    12-oz package frozen coconut

Make cake mix according to directions on box. When cool use dental floss or thread to split layers in half to make four thin layers.

Combine other ingredients to make filling. Let the filing on top drop down the sides. This is not a particularly pretty cake, but it is very moist and good. Edited to add: I think you're supposed to mix them up first and let it sit in the fridge while you're cooking the layers. And also, this cake gets more moist the longer it stays in the fridge so it is better to make a day or so ahead.

For those who prefer baking from scratch, you could probably flavor up your regular favorite plain layer cake with orange flavoring, orange jello, or orange juice for some of the liquid.

Thank you, @drkatiebug. It looks delicious. Your Aunt Sis must have been a wonderful person to have you bawling uncontrollably in the grocery store aisle. I appreciate your sharing this! Do you just divide the filling into 4 portions and assemble the layers one on top of the other? Is it a round cake?

I make it in two round pans, probably 8 inch, but I'm not sure. I never actually measure the filling. I just dump some in between the layers and then use the rest for the top. You want a little more for the top than the middles, because you want if to drip down the sides.

She was very special, but I'm not usually the "bawling in the aisles of Kroger" type of girl. I was apparently in a hormonal mood that day. Most of the time I am more "steel magnolias" in dealing with grief. And the cake itself is good, but certainly not worthy of all those tears.

As Katla said, the Hairy Bikers are two motorbiking guys who cook on TV. They have written three diet books. I have one. The recipe I use the most is Spanish Chicken with chorizo and peppers. Delish.
I am so #+@:;~* off by all the EU discussion that I can't bear to think about it. much less discuss it. It's been relentless. Thank goodness for the cruise when I could get away.
Karen - in the UK we always make cakes from scratch. It's just fat,(butter), flour. eggs, sugar, raising agent, liquid and flavouring. My brownies are to die for and the reason my DDIL married my son. :D They contain loads of real 70% chocolate though. :dizzy:

    Bunnies -1, Charleen - 0 (for today)

Was feeling pretty good about my bunny proofing of the gardens yesterday, feeling the burn also. Got up a little earlier than normal, fed the cats and with a nice hot cup of coffee in my hand strolled over to the living room window that looks out to my backyard and garden. There he was! Just lazily hopping from the grass to the patio to the side gate...then he went under it! >:)

I went to the local DYI store and brought lumber to make a sweep along the bottom of the gate and some bunny/vole repellent. Back home cut the lumber to the desired length and attached to both gates (have a 2nd on the opposite side of the house).

Then applied the liquid repellent to the grass. That is some seriously stinky stuff!! It's primarily garlic and cloves and is not a poison. For those of you that live near tidal water, take a deep wiff at low tide and you will share in the experience. It's supposed to last months. I hope not, I got some of the spray on me. ;)

Just popping in for a quick hello. Trying to wrap up several things for work today and then tomorrow starts vacation! Yea! Have my packing list and have started to pack, but still have lots to do tonight and tomorrow morning. We plan to leave by around noon and it should be a little over 6 hrs drive down to Table Rock Lake. I am very excited to get away and relax. Not sure how much time I will have to check in while I'm down there.

Missed by morning trip to the gym and not sure I will get there tonight. My alarm went off at 5:45AM as usual, but I was just too tired and I rolled over and went back to sleep for another 45 minutes. Worked out OK because I had time to do a few things around the house before logging in to start work this morning.

Heather - is that a secret recipe or do you care to share the amount of ingredients because with 70% chocolate it sounds scrumptious!

Drkatiebug - your recipe sounds delicious. Orange is one of my favorite flavors.

HI gals. I have had a sinus infection all week and have a terrible time getting on here from home. I've tried every browser I can think of, and it just hangs up for ages at a time. So I end up not being able to type anything from here. I can read it all, but no typing. We are going out of town tomorrow, so I will be back WEdnesday and will just have to come here while I'm at work and not on weekends I guess. No other program causes me problems like this one does. Take care and stay cool. Meg from Omaha

Well, this morning we had the recruiter over and my son had to watch some military entry videos. He was telling him about how he will be known as Seaman Gossett, and that he had to address him as petty officer. Of course, my son answers "Yes Sir". About 3 times he did this, with the recruiter correcting him. Poor kid, he has ALWAYS called every other adult as Sir, and now he has to switch over mind wise.

I wrote in my journal while this was all going on. Wow am I far behind in all the things going on in my life. I wrote that sometimes I feel like life isn't my own. It's hard to think about yourself in times of stress, but I am trying. Right now, sometimes I feel as though as I am just going thru the motions of life. I have yet to really get my taste buds back. I eat, but there isn't any true enjoyment. At night my mind whirls around, and I wake up tired.
Its raining here, but its a quiet rain. Hypnotic, even. Today I have an appointment with my dermatologist. I will be telling her that I haven't been with the program, dealing with my skin condition, but it hasn't gotten any worse. There isn't a cure, so I just ignore it, and life has been going on pretty good. If the lesions get bigger then of course I have medicine to apply.

    Have a great day ya'll

    Hello, Ladies!

I am up, down and sideways, today.

Started out pumped UP - I got my box of clothes from my co-worker, yesterday - and I went home and started shimmying into and out of the clothes that she sent me. I had expected them to be size 22-24 - since that is what she said she would send, so I was a tiny bit bummed that the jeans she sent were just a smidge tight... until I took them off and saw that they were size 20! DANG - not too tight to wear - just a smidge tight - and a whole size smaller than I thought. Can you say NSV? Sure y' can. I haven't owned a pair of Jeans from anybody but Just My Size in so long, I hardly know what to do with myself.

So, this morning I got up, did my Gym thing and headed off to work... and got NAILED by Allen's finest for doing 51 in a 40mph zone. *sigh* Oh well... it's only money.

Got to work - a Team Building Luncheon. Subway sandwiches - not too bad, although I did have some Cheetos and a cookie. I guess I blew the carb count for today - but, I will be well under the calories, so, I am just rolling with it.

I am still kinda stoked about the size 20 jeans... and some of those 1x tops fit me, too... Yee Haw!

Good luck with that Bunny, Charleen. We didn't even try for veggies, this year - mostly because I was too busy to get them planted - but also because I didn't have time to bug-, bird- and bunny-proof the growing area. We named the bunny that munches in our back yard Hasenpfeffer... lol.

You will have to keep us posted on whether the repellent works.... but, I must warn you - it was the birds that got my tender pea plants, last year. And certainly the birds that pecked holes in EVERY tomato the second it started to turn red... It was quite disheartening. I think this winter I am going to build a little mesh house to keep the birds out. Hopefully, it will work on Hasenpfeffer, too.

Anyway - have to run, you wonderful women!

    Hugs all round!

81824br5uyrfrsr.gifThursday is my double dancing day. Regular class in the morning and then afternoon practice for the performance at the county fair in August. About two and half hours of dog walking so far (before breakfast, after breakfast, after lunch). I eat a 450 calorie breakfast before 5 AM, then a 250 calorie snack before the 9 AM line dance class, then lunch (350-450 calories) about 11:30 and another meal (300+ calories) at 4 PM and maybe something before bed at 6 PM. I've been eating this way for years and it works for me, but might not work for others.

:)Re, congrats on the smaller pants.

:)Alison, congrats to you for putting your earnings aside for you....you deserve it.

1008846roynpq3w43.gif when I started on MFP and this journey to health and fitness, I gave up baking...I gave away all by baking tools and ingredients don't event think about it any more....it's another thing that works for me that might not work for others.

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .

    Good Evening Ladies,

Charlene, the two week maintenance schedule might work between your mini goals but I don’t actually think of this as a “diet”. If I feel deprived of something specific I work it into my eating by eating lower calories the rest of the day and more exercise. That way I eat healthy all the time and can have what I want any time as long as I stay within my calorie limit. Once in a while I go over in calories for a day and I know it won’t be the end of the world for my weight loss plan. Good luck, whatever you decide.

Kervit, of course you can come back. Welcome. Sorry about the job.

Linda, I like your explanation of feral and stray cats. It was pretty much what I thought the differences were but had never seen it explained. Good job.

Joyce, your get together with the girls sounds great. Glad you had a good time.

Barbie, you are actually one of the reasons I tried line dancing. But I swear, I must be the slowest learner in the world. I can do any of the steps but after all this time I am just now getting to where I can remember the order. It’s a lot more fun when I don’t feel like such a failure but I’m so glad I stuck with it. And one reason I did stick with it is because it’s such good exercise for this lazy ole woman. LOL

Heather, thanks for the tahini suggestions.

Linda, the gym I joined said “unlimited personal trainer” but that’s not exactly what it is. Double check before you make a decision because there is something to be said for the group classes. Our trainer does classes of 5 or 6 people at a time that you must sign up for ahead of time. The classes often fill up. It’s helpful but not like having a personal trainer sit there with just you.

Janetr, so sorry about your tooth. At least you didn’t swallow it. I hear those are hard to digest. Lol

Carey, I know it’s not easy to find the time to plan and prepare the right foods when you are working full time, but you can do it. We are with you.

Kay, I think using their shampoo and soap is where I would really start questioning that weight loss program.

My friends, I have been so busy the past 3 or 4 days that I just can’t find time to read. I barely find time to log my food. I have exercised at the gym, gone to line dance class and out to a bar line dancing with my class. Our big HOA meeting is tonight to finally turn the association over to the homeowners and elect a new Board of Directors. I’ve been on the board the past year and a half. So I’ll keep reading and respond to very little in hopes of catching up one of these days.

:)DJ, did your line dance teacher tell you about how to find videos online of the dances he/she teaches? That has been a big help for my students and me to be able to review a dance at home between classes.
