I'm very glad I did a lower mileage weekend... today was such a slog! After about 45 minutes I was soaked through thanks to a lovely combination of humidity, sweat, drizzle and fog. By the time I got to 12 miles, my shorts were dripping and my socks were full of water; when we left the coffee shop after getting coffee post-run, my shoes had left giant puddles on the floor. If I'd had more than 12 on the schedule, I'm not sure I would have stuck it out. It was 73F to start and 100% humidity, and it was threatening rain for the entire run but we never got the reprieve of actual rain. We're in day 2 of 3 for rainstorms, and we had a lot of flash flood warnings yesterday, so today sounds like a great "take naps and work from home" kind of day.
Congrats to everyone who hit their goals, donated miles/kms to the sick and injured, and hopefully we'll see more success and fewer injuries next month! Bring it on, August!
Upcoming Races:
9/11: Lehigh Valley Via Marathon (Allentown, PA)

Woo hoo! I'm proud of that. Next month will be higher since I'm working on running 10k in preparation for my half marathon in February 2017. I'm curious see how many miles I do next month.
I'm on week two of my training. This morning's run felt good...I went outside a little later than yesterday and it was a little warmer so I went opposite of my usual route to seek out some shade.
Can't wait till the weather cools down some.6 -
MNLittleFinn wrote: »Well, it's official, I just had my first minor freak out about my September HM...Strava says 498 feet of elevation. Biggest elevation run so far has been either 415 or 435, depending on if I believe Strava or GC more.....I'll feel so much better after I walk/jog the course with me mom....Hopefully in just a couple weeks.
When you have longer hills or mountains, it tends to be accurate enough in my experience (e.g. 642m->603m; 440m->420m, 412m->360m) - ususally overestimates the elevation a bit, but none to serious. But for courses with occasional hills it gives me exaggerated elevations all the time. Just last week, I planned a 16km route, and the Strava tool said it would be 211m (692ft) - after running it, the activities page read 131m (430ft) - which sounds more accurate, apart from a hilly bit in the first few kms, which I know to be around 100m, the rest was pretty flat. Or, a little less extreme, the route I planned for today was 292m (958ft) in the route planner, on the activity page its only 229m(750ft).
(maybe just count your elevation in meters - yikes, if I convert those numbers to feet, it sounds scary! )
Seriously, it depends on the course profile. Unless all that eleveation is all stuffed into one big hill at the end, 498 feet of elevation over 69217 feet of running probably won't kill you (and even then, in the worst case you might have to walk a minute, no shame in that). I think you can wait with freaking out until you've actually seen the course and discovered some monster hill, and enjoy your rest day today3 -
My last few running days of July consisted of attempting 10K runs and I succeeded!!! Friday's run was 75% running, 25% power walking (10.15km); today's run was 80:20 (10.22km). I feel flabbergasted that I was able to do it and not feel like dying at the end. Honestly, the beginning of each run was harder than the majority of it. By the end, I did feel like I could go on further. lol
Happy last day of the month!!!

@HonuNui The news from your son are absolutely fantastic!! And great news on your dog's knee, as well as great job running all those miles. 80 miles above target - I'm sure that is a record for this challenge thread.
@JessicaMcB How inconsiderate of the rain to Ignore your awesomeness. Lucky you had someone to rescue you. But even counting only half your distance, your way above your goal for the month, well done!
@AdrianChr92 That while-running photo is really cool
@Amandajs232 Within on second of your 10km PB sounds like you had a great run today, what a nice way to finsh the month!
@1TheQueenB Congratulations in reaching your goal! That's definitely something to be proud of. And I fully agree with you - can't wait till the weather cools down.
@TattooedDolphinGirl78 Woohoo! Congrats on the 10K today3 -

This run was tough. This is the first run on my training plan i've cut a bit short, had 20 scheduled. It was 75 degrees this morning with 90% Humidity at 4:30 am. We live in a newer community that still has some construction going on and they were digging a basement yesterday. I run through my neighborhood daily in the dark so I'm familiar with the areas that are uneven, etc. Well there were some dirt chunks in the road that were not there yesterday and I rolled my ankle slightly at about 2 miles in when I stepped on one. I walked it off for a few seconds and things felt OK when i started back up. My pace was really steady at about 9:30 and HR was staying in the upper Z2 through 14 miles of this run even with the humidity forcing me to change shirts at about 10 miles. I took in about 96oz of water at felt fairly well hydrated until about mile 16. My HR spiked about 10-12 BPM and pace slowed to about 9:45. I stopped back at the house at 18, which proved to be a mistake, to get some water and I just couldn't bring myself to leave the garage. My shoes were completely soaked and like @kristinegift said I was leaving a trail of dripping sweat wherever I went. When I weighed myself post run I still had lost almost 4 lbs in water weight, I 'm still pleased with this run because unless we get some freak weather event it'll be in the 40-50's when I do my Marathon in October and should have to contend with some of these things. This run did get me past my July Goal and to a personal best 300.22 Miles for the month. Week 9 of training starts tomorrow.

I am now officially crazy - I did actually get up at 5am to go running, and today I managed to pull it off - no coffee maker mishaps to stop me today
It was still dark when I set out, but the sun rose soon after. And while I hate getting up early, I have to admit it payed off temperature-wise - the average temperature over the entire run was around 20C/70F. Still a little too warm for my tastes, but much nicer than it would have been later in the day.
This was also my first run with the new backpack + 1.5 litre hydration bladder, and it went surprisingly well. I was afraid the water would slosh around and drive me insane (I remember once running behind someone with a noisy pack like that during a 10k; it annoyed me enough that I decided to ignore any pace plans and get the hell away from her). I did the "turn upside down and suck the air out"-thing I read about somewhere after filling it, and that actually worked. Wow, having enough water for the entire run is sure a nice; combined with the colder temps, todays pace was faster than any of my last couple long runs, despite being a new distance PR.
Since you aren't supposed to put anything but water in the pack (e.g. my favourite orange juice/water/marmite mix is out), I had to come up with some other source for carbs and electrolytes. I tried out gels a few month ago, but I don't really like how much trash using them produces. Then I remembered that someone ( @7lenny7 , I think) was using honey, so that's what I decided to do as well. How to get potassium puzzled me for a bit, but in the end I just bought a jar of some special "low sodium" salt. It was expensive for salt (almost 4€ for 250g), but it'll last me forever, so I guess that's okay. This is the mix I came up with in the end:
-125g honey (~100g carbs),
-1 teaspoon Marmite - partly because it has lots of minerals, including 390mg sodium, 60mg potassium, and partly for the taste ,
-1/4 TS LO SALT (170mg sodium, 450mg potassium),
-1/4 TS regular salt (520mg sodium) [so 1080g sodium, 510g potassium in total].
-125ml of lemon juice to combat the sweetness from the honey, and to thin it down
In the end, it was liquid enough that I could fill it into a little bottle and put it into one of the side pockets of the backpack, where I could reach it during the run. It doesn't taste as nice as orange juice, but honestly still better than some gels I tried ("green apple" and "cappuccino", I am looking at you!). If I hadn't forgotten to buy the cheap squeeze stuff and been forced to take my nice Tasmanian Leatherwood honey, it would have been a lot cheaper than gels too. Plus I know what's in there, and it worked well for a 3h15 run today, so I will use it again next week.
Todays run was 26.4km, which leaves me at 241.3km for the month, 21.3km above my goal. @Elise4270 , I have a half marathon to donate to you

Great running this month everyone despite the horrible heat and humidity you all are beasts!!!
Took Skip to get new kicks yesterday and I'm totally jealous of her new Brooks Hyperion. She said they feel alot like the Brooks but much lighter.
She also got a new water bottle, it's not hard, the bottle is soft so it's more natural to hold in your hand. Skip has a small hand, it holds 17 oz compared to the her other that held 10 oz and was bulkier. I've talked to two people who use these and love them.
Me I got nuthin' but the bill LOL
@kristinegift what I miss most about winter running is sleeping later on the weekends, the crisp clean smell of the winter morning air, the pretty night sky with stars while running, not having sweats running down places I didn't know sweat could run !
@mobycarp I love reading your posts. Skip's coach tells her repeatedly her runs should be progressive in time and not the other way around.
@stoshew71 I looked later at strava and saw your course. Eastview is a treat isn't it?
@orphia I love the park run idea. We have a FB page here called "we run huntsville" and people posts weekly runs there, they post "hey I'm going to run at XX today at xXX time and going XX miles who wants to meet me?" It woks out great.
@honunui reading your post made me cry. What amazing news!!!! Also great news on Akamai!

@5512bf That sounds like a really rough run. I had a 20 miler that I ended at 18 a few weeks ago, for similar reasons. Too hot. Too humid. But seriously congrats on your mileage for July; that's an amazing total! I stand in awe!
@_nikkiwolf_ That mixture is intriguing. But I like gels, so I'll keep eating them A running friend of mine made this goop-paste as an alternative for gels once, but she only took it on two runs. It didn't taste bad, but it did resemble a loose doggy poo She carried it in an empty breath mint tin and it worked for her, but it was cumbersome to bring to a race.2 -
@_nikkiwolf_
I've been trying to figure out a marathon day nutrition plan. I've seen similar mixtures and have been wanting to try some. Since I know I've got water ever 2 miles at the race I tried something new today. I took 4 gels and 5 Nuun tablets and put in a 12 Oz bottle with hot water to disolve last night then the refrigerator. I sipped a bit of it every 2 miles then drank about 6-8 Oz of water. This worked fairly well today until the humidity finally zapped me. I think putting everything together like this or your mixture will be much more manageable race day vs trying to carry and open gels while running. I'll probably try something like your recipe next week since mine cost me about 8 bucks.0 -
I cannot believe July is already gone, in a blink of an eye it'll be dark and rainy.
July was a nice running month, broke 300 miles but more importantly I learnt that if you try to remove a moth on your leg while running downhill without stopping... you end up at the er with bruised ribs and cuts on half your body!
Never mind lesson learnt and time for my favourite hobby, removing scabs! Was lucky that either damage was not so bad or my body heals fast. Moving as much as possible is painful but it does make you heal fast.
Just wanted to ask you: in a month time I'll be in NY, are there any good places to enjoy a relaxed run and should I avoid central Park?0 -
@patrikc333 - definitely run in Central Park! It's awesome and a lot of shade. There is a 5 mile or 6 mile loop - and you could just loop it a few times. It will probably be very hot and humid, so you will need the shade and to start early. I ran it last weekend with my daughter who lives there. She runs it every weekend. Another great run is along the Hudson, however, it is sunny, so unless it is chilly out I wouldn't run it.
@HonuNui - I got teary-eyed reading about your son too. Great news!
Sorry - I forgot who asked about hydration after a run. I have been obsessed with watermelon this month! I buy entire watermelons and eat a few cups after a run. @shanaber said that when they go out of season to try just buying watermelon juice. But another thing my daughter uses and I tried and like too is this: http://www.ultimareplenisher.com/ Got mine from Amazon. I like it much better than the normal sports drinks.

LOL I get it. I get anxious before regular planned runs that aren't even races.
Another reason I like running first thing in the morning. I am already up and running before my brain wakes up. By the time I freak out to do what I planned, I'm already doing it. Lol6 -

Yes. I've realized I get freaked out waiting all day to run in the evening. What if something comes up? What if I feel tired or gross? Lol. I'd rather just get up and do it4 -
Another reason I like running first thing in the morning. I am already up and running before my brain wakes up. By the time I freak out to do what I planned, I'm already doing it. Lol
Yup. This. If I wait at all I end up not wanting to run...If I'm moving, either running or driving to my hilly run, within 15 minutes, I'm good to go...it's too late to stop it.
Another thing for the last day of this discussion...Brooks Mens Drift Shell...I can get it for $67 in my size directly from Brooks....this is very tempting.1 -
It is quite a bit cooler today, but still pretty humid. A nice change though. I did what felt like an easy-paced 3.41 miles. Turned out to be just slightly faster than my usual average pace so I was pleased that it felt good.
And that finishes off the week with 26.6 miles, which is my highest week yet - a marathon!
And the month at 108.4 miles. So happy with that accomplishment.
I'm not sure I'll be able to do another 100 mile month, as my schedule will start getting crazier in August but I will be increasing my long run to 1:45 and then 2:00 by the end of August so I will add on some miles that way. The daily base runs may need to be cut back a little but hopefully I can carve out time.
Great July, everyone. See you all in the August thread.5 -
7/2....2.01 miles walk/run on treadmill
7/4....2.7 miles walk/run in park
7/6....2.5 miles walk/ run on treadmill
7/9....2.7 miles walk/ penguin shuffle run in park
7/11..2.68 miles walk/ run on Harvard's football field
7/13..3 miles walk/ run on treadmill
7/15..1.51 miles run/ walk (mostly running ) on treadmill
7/17..3.9 miles run/ walk in park
7/19..2.25 miles run/ walk on treadmill (approx .25 mi walk + 2 mi run)
7/21..2.21 miles run/ walk/ swim ??? in the park
7/26..2 miles walk/run/fetch with Pandora + 1.58 mile walk = 3.58 miles
7/27..2.56 miles run @ 11:16 pace + .9 mile walk = 3.46 miles
7/29..3.1 mile run @ 11:40 ave pace + .5 mile walk on the treadmill = 3.6 miles total
7/31..3 mile walk with Pan (knees too sore to run)
Knees hurt too much to run today, so I took Pan for a 3 mile walk to & from the dog park to (just barely) make my goal. It was a nice day for a walk - not too hot or humid, and the route takes us along a path by the river. Pandora loves to sniff out all the wildlife there...we were surprised by a blue heron that swooped right in front of us down to the river! And of course the dog park was lots of fun. So Pandora and I are donating 2 miles of a nice nature/ dog park walk to everyone recovering. And even though these are only walking miles, not running ones, they are extra good for recovery because of all the tail-wagging happy vibes Pandora is sending your way
Goal: 35 + 2 for Black Toe Month
37.59 done: +.59 miles over
Upcoming races:
10/16: Stride Against Violence 5K5 -
Had a neighbor/running partner of mine suggest we run this afternoon in a park so we can get a bit more shade. I tried talking him into just meeting me at our building's treadmill, but he insisted on running outside. As my car showed a temperature of 105 (which cooled down to a balmy 95 by the time we arrived), I suspected he'd be in a bit of trouble, and 2 miles into our 5 mile run at a leisurely 12 min/mile pace, he pulls up, concludes he isn't going to run anymore, so I head off to finish off my last 3 at my more normal pace, cursing him for having me do my final 5 mid-day in a not-so-shaded park in the middle of a Florida summer.
Regardless, done with my goal for the month. Onto August!
In some positive news, it looks like registration for Boston dates have been posted, and I'll know if I'm in around my birthday based on my qualifying time/margin.

@Ohhim nice running! sucks about your running partner wanting to run outside and then bailing on you. Hope you get into Boston!1
-
@HonuNui Awesome news about your son!!!!!! And thank you for the sunscreen reminder. I grew up in the desert southwest (US) and was always outside - often without sunscreen. Now I'm much more careful, but very worried about developing skin cancer from all my early exposure
High fives to everyone who made or passed their goal, and hugs to everyone who's injured, still recovering, or just needs one
See ya in August!2 -
@AdrianChr92 - LOL. If I had the hand-eye coordination to take pictures while running, I might be playing tennis or baseball instead of being a runner. With my coordination, the *best* thing that could happen if I tried to take pictures while running is that I'd get bad pictures. More likely, I'd drop the phone and interrupt the run. Or drop the phone, have it land just wrong, and break the phone. Or face plant, and end the run for me. Just too much risk, I'm better off leaving the phone in my belt till I stop.
@Ohhim - Yes, I have my calendar reminder set to register for Boston on September 12. I hope you get in and I see you there next April. The speculation I've seen is running toward a smaller cutoff for 2017 than for 2016, but nobody really knows.

7/30 – 19.27 paced run
7/31 – 7.60 easy 60 minutes
July total to date – 192.69
Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Become comfortable running 5 days a week. Finish Shoreline in good shape, managing the expected heat and humidity better than last year. Build base toward Rochester Marathon.
Today's notes – Today's assignment was 60 minutes easy. The morning was devoted to sleeping late and a leisurely routine, which made the whole day run late. Got out on the road at 4:15 PM or so, at 73º F (23º C) and the familiar summer humidity. Made a decision mid-route to cut some hills out of the possible plan, ended up running 7.6 miles in 1:00:08 because I didn't notice my watch turning over the hour until a few seconds later.
This was another day of the run being nice, but the weather being dreary. But I got the run in, and feel much better for having done it. That closes the month out at 192.69 miles, when I thought I'd come in between 150 and 200. The biggest challenge of July was dealing with getting enough sleep when I lost another 2.5 hours per week to commuting compared to when I was training for Boston. I have to deal with the same nonsense in August; maybe I'll get 200 miles in, and maybe I'll lose too many runs to the time crunch.

7/12....4.15 miles (rolling hills on the treadmill)--12:14 pace....exhausted after working all night and only 5 hours sleep. Still happy that I was able to run. Was distracted by getting a free phone in the mail...so too late to run outside.
Total for July thus far...27.83.
7/15....5.08 miles(rolling hills program on the treadmill) at 12:00 pace. I wanted to run a little faster, approximately 11:06 pace again, but "fried" after working 2 nights in a row and getting very little sleep. My plan is to run a long run today, probably 10 miles.
I slept 10 hours last night and feel great and I lost almost a pound over night. I am in maintenance now (for a month) but still closely monitoring the weight gain/loss. One of my mfp friends lost the weight quickly ( he was ona 1200 calorie diet) and gained 40 pounds back the next year.
Total for the month of July...32.91.
7/16 ....6 miles(fartleks)....that was a fun run! Cool weather...I started too late to run the 10 miles that I planned..so opted to run 6 today and then try for 10 tomorrow.I did almost get hit by a "smart" car at an intersection. It was funny...I saw it out of the corner of my eye, and sized up whether it would damage me more than I would damage it if we collided. On Monday, I plan to rest. New total is 38.91.
Thanks to Elise4270, Stowshew71, and AdriaChr92 for answering my questions. I will google Authur Lydiard...always interested in unorthodox training methods.
@MobyCarp: Very impressed with your race results, esp. being number 1 in your age bracket. If I race long enough, I may break into the top 100 finishers. Such an accomplishment to be number 1. I love the curved glass trophy...super cool.
Just finished running 10 miles today...it was harder than last time, maybe because I ran 6 miles yesterday and 5 the previous day. I tried to stay at 85-87% max heart rate...after 5 miles, I could really feel the soreness kick in. I was expecting rubbery legs, not soreness. It was really hot today with occasional cool headwind. I wanted to quit but kept repeating, "stronger, fitter, faster" as a kind of mantra. I slowed significantly the last 3 miles, probably 14 minute and 15 min miles. Afterward, soaked with sweat. Looking forward to rest day tomorrow.
Total for the month is 37.83.
7/19....6 miles....last 3 tempo miles at 95% heart rate. Another hot day, 89 degrees with a heat index of 100. 1st 1/2 mile I felt like I had cement blocks on my shoes, but then felt better. By mile 4, I was in the "zone", then fatigued in the middle of mile 5. Just pushed on after that. Not really worried about how fast I am getting it done (except when I start late...don't want to be in the park after dark.) Lately I have been running in the afternoon...very few runners for obvious reasons, but I also want to "get a little tougher". Dripping with sweat afterwards...have to peel my clothes off and then "warm up".
Many of my friends tell me that I am crazy for running...because I am going to "wreck" my joints. I never have joint pain or problems but sometimes my legs ache (mostly muscle) when I am trying to sleep. I have no problems when I walk. Anything that can help that? I know to stay away from Nsaids. I will take Tylenol just to help with sleep.
Rest day today...my husband and I are going to a concert (Frampton and Allman). Long run tomorrow.
Total for the month...43.83 miles.
Unable to do the long run. One of my trees in my backyard fell into a neighbor's yard. My husband asked me to help him with gathering limbs and stacking them. It was a really large tree and may take a couple of days with a chain saw to get it out of her yard.
The muscles (lateral) around my knees feel tight. Also some soreness in hamstrings. Do any of you worry about overtraining?
I may do a short run tomorrow...noted that I was 17 miles from completing my monthly goal.
I ran for 3 miles this a.m. ....it was all of the time I had this a.m. but last 2 days were "rest" days and I knew that I can't run again until Sunday. Total for the month is 46.83.
It was cooler this a.m. 82 degrees with heat index of 95 but the dew point was 76....ugh! I run near an organic garden and was envying the plants that were getting watered.
I work the next 2 nights...will keep checking in...You are all so inspirational...I love this group!
Unable to run yesterday due to extreme heat....heat index of 104. Plus didn't want to deal with "Brickyard" traffic.
Able to run this a.m. though. 4 miles...much cooler this a.m. 76 degrees with 96% humidity. Waiting for a break in the weather.
Total for the month...50.48 miles.
7/27.....6 miles.....It was 88 degrees, heat index of 104 and only 55% humidity. I felt good and was able to run at an even pace....11:44 minute miles until mile 6 and it was a little over 12 minutes.
I have started reading "Meb for Mortals" and have been focused on where my arms are when I run. When I keep the wrists close the waist , my posture improves significantly...I never realized that I was leaning forward so much.
I have to get ready for work. Will try to catch up with all of the copious posts.
Total for the month. 56.48 miles. Only 4 more miles...to complete July.
7/29......I was already at the gym. So decided to run on the treadmill. Using the rolling hills program, I ran 4.46 miles at a pace of 11:19. I was dripping in sweat afterward. As usual, I began getting the "runner's high" at mile 4...I felt like running farther but there is a time limit on the treadmill. Do any of you experience a "runner's high" at any particular mile? Just curious. Also notice that I have a layer of salt covering my body afterward...do any of you replace your electrolytes? Sport drinks or mineral replacement?
The good news is that I met goal...60.94 miles for the month. I plan to run today and tomorrow....may be over 70 miles by the end of the month. I am either going to run 4 or 6 miles today and then a long run of 10 tomorrow. It depends a lot on how much help my husband needs in getting rid of the tree that fell in our in the neighbor's yard.
Still working toward the Indianapolis HM on October 8th at Fort Ben.
7/30....9 miles.....Planned my long run for tomorrow but my legs were tired....could only muster 12:00-12:30 miles....so decided to switch up and do the long run today. Shortened it from 10 miles to 9 miles and ran it in 1:52:59. My right gluts were really aching around mile 6 and ached off an on until mile 8. Then I decided to try to pick up pace and noted that the aching disappeared. Hmmmm. Miles 7 and 8 were really tough...I ran mile 8 at 14:14. My breathing was good and my head was "in the game" but legs were quitting on me a little. Still glad that I got in under my belt. I am going for a shorter run tomorrow, probably 4 miles....I like that distance quite a bit.
Goal for the month...60 miles. Ran 69.94 miles.
Plan was to run 4 miles today after the horse race ( the Haskell) but sore legs and lacking the desire today.....so unplanned rest day.. Also covered in poison ivy, both wrists, left neck and face. Still made goal with 9.94 miles to spare. I feel god about it. Donating 9 miles to the injured. Onward to August!1 -
@ddmom0811 - Definitely not a fan of mid-afternoon outdoor running here, but for 5 miles, and given it was my (more novice) running partner's idea, I didn't want to discourage his optimism despite knowing it was a pretty bad idea on his part.
@mobycarp - Set my calendar alarm for the 19th at 10AM, and from everything I've read online, as long as they keep the Boston field at about 30,000, my 1:35 cutoff should be safe. Still, I don't think they announce the field size for at least 6 more weeks, so I'll just continue to control what I can (i.e. my prep for Chicago in October - where I'll age up), and let the chips fall where they may.
@mnlittlefinn - For 5 miles of slow running, I'm usually ok with whatever temperature is thrown at me, but definitely find my heart rate spikes up about 15 BPM at 93 degrees (according to garmin) vs. the 75 degrees my gym seems to be kept at. Still, beyond that sort of distance, I'd rather run in a cooler climate. On the plus side, this afternoon's humidity was pretty reasonable. RE your marathon training, I raced my first 5K in February of 2013, my first 10 miler in May of 2013, and my first marathon in May of 2014. I'd say a year and a half was about right, but don't want to discourage you from trying a longer distance if you think your body feels comfortable with longer distance training runs.0
